HEPATITIS
SHISODIA HARSHVARDHAN SINGH
UNIVERSITY OF PERPETUAL HELP SYSTEM DALTA
 Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver .
 Viruses cause most cases of hepatitis .
 TYPE OF HEPATITIS –
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
 Drug or alcohol use can also cause hepatitis .
 In other cases, your body mistakenly attacks healthy
cells in the liver .
 Some forms of hepatitis are mild, and others can be
serious. Some can lead to scarring, called cirrhosis, or
to liver cancer .
INTRODUCTION
 Some people who have hepatitis have no symptoms.
Others may have –
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Dark-colored urine and pale bowel movement
- Jaundice, yellowing of skin and eyes
INTRODUCTION
 Hepatitis B is a deadly disease with a high prevalence rate
in the Philippines.
 Studies show that in the Philippines there is a Hepatitis B
carrier rate of 9%.
 This means that out of 10 people at least 1 is a carrier of
Hepatitis B.
 It is estimated that more than 7.7 million people are
chronically infected with Hepatitis B, of whom between 1.1
and 1.9 million are expected to die prematurely of cirrhosis
or liver cancer..
PROGRAMM
 Chronic hepatitis B one of the most challenging
infectious diseases to manage.
 The Hepatology Society of the Philippines (HSP) has
seen the growing rate of Hepatitis B in the country
and aims to provide comprehensive information to
the public and medical community.
 They strive to spread awareness of Hepatitis B in the
country as well as providing the information and
means to the treatments necessary for the disease.
PROGRAM
 Every year, there are an estimated 20 million HEV
infections worldwide, leading to an estimated 3.3
million symptomatic cases of hepatitis E (1).
 WHO estimates that hepatitis E caused
approximately 44 000 deaths in 2015 (accounting for
3.3% of the mortality due to viral hepatitis).
OBJECT
 The virus is transmitted via the fecal-oral route,
principally via contaminated water.
 Hepatitis E is found worldwide, but the disease is
most common in East and South Asia.
 A vaccine to prevent hepatitis E virus infection has
been developed and is licensed in China, but is not
yet available elsewhere.
OBJECT
 3.5 million people are estimated to be living with
hepatitis C in the United States. The actual number
may be as high as 4.7 million or as low as 2.5 million.1
 850,000 people in the U.S. are estimated to be living
with hepatitis B. The actual number may be as high as
2.2 million or as low as 730,000.2
DATA SOURCE
 More than half of persons living with hepatitis do not
know that they have the virus. Thus, they are at risk
for life threatening liver disease and cancer and
unknowingly transmitting the virus to others.
 67% of persons living with hepatitis B infection do not
know they have the virus.
 51% of persons living with hepatitis C infection do not
know they have the virus.
DATA SOURCE
 Three out of four people living with hepatitis C infection
are baby boomers born between 1945 and 1965.
 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the racial/ethnic
group that is most heavily affected by hepatitis B virus.
Asians and Pacific Islanders represent about 5% of the U.S.
population, but they represent about half of all persons
living with hepatitis B. As a result, 1 in 12 Asian Americans
and Pacific Islanders are living with hepatitis B.
DATA SOURCE
 Hepatitis C infections are increasing in the United
States.
DATA SOURCE
 Acute hepatitis C infections increased 364% from 2006
to 2012 in four states affected by the opioid epidemic
(Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia).
Acute hepatitis B infections increased 114% from
2006 to 2013 in three states affected by the opioid
epidemic (Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia).
DATA SOURCE
 The CDC recommends the hepatitis A vaccine for all
children beginning at age one, as well as for those
who have not been previously immunized and are at
high risk for contracting the disease .
 For children 12 months of age or older, the
vaccination is given as a shot into the muscle in two
doses 6–18 months apart and should be started
before the age 24 months.
PLAN
 The CDC recommends the routine vaccination of all
children under the age of 19 with the hepatitis B
vaccine.
 They also recommend it for those who desire it or are
at high risk.
