Title: Scientists as Writers (Author: Laura Jane Martin) Scientists study murky ponds, holes in space, and atoms that refuse to touch. Science is inspiring and beautiful. But scientific articles are not. Most scientific articles are so impenetrable that even scientists cringe to read them. Instead of expanding our collective wonder, they intimidate, and we leave it to science journalists and university extension associates to translate these ciphers into But shouldn’t good writing be required of scientists, too? Today scientific articles are constrained by convention and myth. The conventions of scientific writing have two goals: to convey authority, and to demonstrate the author’s objectivity. Conventions that convey authority include a standardized article structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion); booster words (Scientific articles contain more booster words [clearly,obviously] than other research articles, but less hedge words [may, seem, possibly].); and invocations of doom (To justify experiments articles often begin with overblown sentences like “As we all know, all species are dying.”) Conventions that convey objectivity include the erasure of scientists as actors in their own experiments via past passive voice (e.g. “the chemicals were heated” versus “I heated the chemicals”) and the use of nominalizations or zombie nouns, which make increased population density.”). Scientists use these conventions consciously or unconsciously to assert distance between themselves and their subject, to achieve objectivity through prose. But experimental integrity is not the same thing as avoiding the first person – nor does avoiding adjectives protect scientific work from bias. Scientists merely perform authority and objectivity through their conventions, and the result is that experiments seem to unfold tidily and timelessly, making the scientific process appear foreordained – and boring. Strangely enough, today’s conventions emerged in a seventeenth century attempt to make scientific writing clearer. They were first codified by the Royal Society of London in a 1667 booklet opposing the elitism of rhetoricians. Ornaments of speech were, in the Society’s opinion, “in open defiance against Reason”; poetry was “this vicious abundance of Phrase, this trick of Metaphors, this volubility of Tongue.” Honoring reason and clarity above such trickery, Society members insisted on “a close, naked, natural way of speaking; positive expressions; clear senses; a native easiness: bringing all things as near the Mathematical plainness as they can.” Today the opposite concern – exclusivity – drives scientific writing. The present research aims to study Mitchell (2004) Cloud Atlas from a narratological point of view for its generic hybridity which makes it a significant work of postmodern literature. David Stephen Mitchell (1969) is one of Britain’s foremost contemporary writers who won prominent literary prizes including 2004 and 2002 Man Booker Prize for Fiction. This research analyzes the novel’s narrative style and particular conventions which lead to a certain genre to investigate the implications and their relation to reality. It tries to unsettle the following questions: Are there any significant elements of dystopian science fiction in the novel? If yes, what are the political, philosophical, and moral implications of such categorization? To answer the questions narratological approach particularly genre criticism is applied to the novel. After the "Introduction", in the "Discussion" section, key words are introduced and defined; the elements of dystopian science fiction are searched for in the novel; and the implications of those elements will be discussed. In the "Conclusions" the genre and its ontological significance will be touched upon. This article shows that Cloud Atlas is a science fiction as it depicts a future advanced in technology, economy, health, transportation, and communication. Also the dystopian attitude is dominant because the pictured world has failed to consider societal and ethical issues and for its capitalism, genetic manipulation, and ignorance of and towards human and humanity. The ontology of the story has its own kind of reality whose characteristics can be generalized to the real world out of the novel. The issues fictionalized in the novel have roots in the present time problems of the world. It is concluded that the novel tries to warn people and the ontological solutions given to these problems are considered to be useful in the reality. Mitchell’s dystopian world in "An Orison of Sonmi-451" is not the hopeless end of everything. He thinks that there is a chance to save the world by reading about other societies and creating a balance between nature and science.

There are several large differences between the immigrants of Cohen’s and Martinez’s books, even thought both cover two cultures who are very similar in their views of family. In Cohen’s Workshop to Office the Italian families have migrated as a whole to America seeking a better life for the entire family. They would stay and live together in tight knit groups and communities working tirelessly as a unit to achieve their version of the American Dream. Cohen’s book is set in the 1900s-1950s when the view on immigration was different but paints a clear picture of family involvement as a unit, “for as long as anyone could remember the daily activities of southern Italian girls involved tasks that contributed to the family economy” (Cohen, 19). Cohen very clearly illustrates that the young girls to mature females all made a very important contribution in their own to the well being of their family. The young girls would often look over their siblings as mothers worked non skilled labor factory jobs, “thirteen-year-old Michelina gets up at 5:30 every morning, prepares her father’s breakfast and crochets Irish lace before going to school, works again two hours after school and takes care of the baby” (Cohen, 50). Keeping the family intact was a very large and important difference for the two cultures because Cohen’s Italian families were able to rely on each other for support. The view towards immigration, especially Mexican immigrants, is very different in Martinez’s Crossing Over which was written in the late 1990’s. A time during which America was experiencing an economic boom, while Mexico was experiencing an economic depression. As more Mexican immigrants crossed the border for jobs, they were met with more violent opposition, “a videotape reminiscent of the Rodney King footage had aired on the evening news showing Riverside sheriff’s deputies beatings beating unarmed Mexican migrants, none of them visibly resisting, by the side of a Southern California freeway at rush hour” (Martinez, 7). Still more migrants crossed the border, knowing they could be met with sometimes violent opposition, because they wanted to financially support their families in Mexico. Mostly it is men who cross the border, leaving their families behind so they could do migrant labor work and send their earnings back home. Some men have the goals of obtaining an education for their own children, so they could one day have a better life “the future is in an American education for his daughter, Yeni, a nice apartment, a new car for himself, and some land here in Cheran” (Martinez, 66). Though the family in Crossing Over would love an apartment stateside, at the end of they day they see Mexico as their home.
