Beauty and the Geek
Watching television is one of usually pastimes for people, especially watching reality television. According to the Oxford dictionary reality television is
a "television programs in which real people are continuously filmed, designed to be entertaining rather than informative" (Oxford). Beauty and the Geek
pairs together "Geeks" (socially inelegant nerd breeds) and "Beauties" (beautiful women handpicked for depicting bimbos), who then take on
challenges. Each week one couple is forced to leave the house and the last remaining couple wins $250,000 in prizes. Along the way the geeks are
renovated, and the beauties learn various things about geek culture. Beauty and the geek amplifies a negative stereotype of men and women enforced by
pairing smart, nerdy men with women focused on looks.
By asking the women carefully selected questions, they are made to look ditzy enforcing the negative stereotype. Before the beauties were chosen for
the show they were interviewed, taped and further asked a few uncomplicated questions but to them were quite complex for they looked confused and
puzzled after being questioned. Sim Ahmed talks about when the producers were scouting for beauties, they looked for several things: Gorgeous
women that were "preened and ready to take center stage, but ask their opinion on politics, the solution to a mathematical equation, or how to reboot a
hard drive and they'll be stumped" (Ahmed). Nadia Underwood was asked in her interview, "what weighs more? A

Disadvantages Of Cosplayers
Cosplay has the ability to transform cosplayers into their heroes, whoever they are. But things haven't always been that ideal. Unfortunately, body
shaming and bullying and abusing are very real and prominent issues for cosplayers at conventions. The sting of negative comments can carry over
into regular life for some and even lead to anxiety or depression (Arielle Lien and psychologist Dr. Beth Murphy).
Katie Mellema (Fig.22) an experienced cosplayer, shared some insight into this issue in an article on Cosplayers vs. the World: Social Issues (Volume
I) by Jade Chambers (2013). Fig.22 Cosplay Photo of Katie

As a result, fans or the audience forget that there are individuals inside those costumes. They are overwhelmed by the fact that their favourite character
has come to life and end up crossing their limits. Sometimes audiences assume that cosplayers are dressed up in a provocative manner of because they
are "asking for it". This causes sexual and verbal harassment. Women have been groped, and men have been put down for not fitting or perfectly fitting
a certain costume. Thus, certain organizers are trying to bring awareness to this issue by implementing anti–harassment policies. In New York's Comic
Con, attendees can see a large sign that says 'Cosplay is not Consent', and that everyone should be treated with respect. (2014)
Harrassment is not limited to just female cosplayers. Male cosplayer John of "Moderately Okay Cosplay" has been groped multiple times while
dressed as anime and video game characters. "It didn't really affect me much. It surprised me more than anything, like a 'Did that just happen?' type of
thing," he said.

Informative Essay On Nerds
What is a Nerd? Nerds. 4.0 Gpa. High Honors. Science clubs. Math clubs. Awkward. Weirdly dressed. All of these ideas come to mind when
someone says the word nerd. Nerds are easy to spot. Nerds are everywhere, in the halls, in the classrooms, in the stores. Over the past four years
I've been pegged as a nerd, mega nerd and even "an advanced nerd," (what does that even mean?), and I've learned to embrace those terms, not
letting them bring me down. Being called a nerd nowadays is more of a compliment than it is an insult. But being called a nerd raises the question,
How, or why, is being smart or passionate on a topic a bad thing? Before calling someone a nerd, one must take a hard look at what it means to be a

These posers pretend to be nerds, "like" and tell people they like to do nerdy things and often are just trying to labeled a nerd to be "cool." The
next type of nerd are those who excel in one interest, such as art, a movie series or fantasy stuff, the "fandom nerds" (Hypsibema). Those people
who fall into these categories are more geeks than nerds, as they focus mainly on excelling in their interests (WikiHow). Then there are the nerds. A
majority of the populations "nerds" fit into category. These people do not classify or call themselves nerds, as it is usually a title granted to them
because they hear it so often (Hypsibema). These are the people who are bullied the hardest, those who feel the affects of being a nerd the most, and
feel the worst about being one. These negatives however deep, do not hinder them from doing what they love the most. Lastly, there are those who are
geniuses. These are the nerds that are exceptionally smart, well– rounded people. They have friends, usually who are like them, but not the same, and

Freaks And Geeks Analysis
Freaks and Geeks is a show about the relationships between the so called "freaks" of high school and the "geeks." The show tries to show that the
two groups are very different yet the same in many ways. Does the series premiere of this show reflect these ideologies? For those elders who have no
idea what the show is about; "Freaks and Geeks" is a television show that aired one season in 1999. It focuses mainly around two cliques in high
school: the freaks and the geeks. Lindsay Weir and her younger brother Sam Weir are the protagonists of the story. From the start, the audience learns
that Lindsay is a top student and the best mathlete in the school, but recently she's been acting up. She has been trying desperately to shed that view of

Star Wars Versus Star Trek Essay
Star Wars versus Star Trek. Marvel versus DC. Gandalf versus Dumbledore. Batman versus Superman. Almost everyone that could be asked could

Harry Potter Fandom Stereotypes
The word fandom, tends to be associated as an audience of passivity, obsession or even violence. As research has advanced, it is viable to see that these
connotations are not entirely valid. Instead the research on fandom is revealing to be more complex than initially thought. The following essay will
substantiate this claim, by showing how negative stereotypes of the fan may be disputed. This will be done through the use of the Harry Potter fandom.
Firstly, the essay will introduce the concept of a fan. Following this, an analysis will be given as to how fans are not only an active subcultural
community of readers, but also how they use these mechanisms to be powerful political and social agents. Additionally, the complexity of the fan shall

10–17). This perspective tries to override the power that fans appear to have over dominant ideology. This mask of passivity labels the fan as an
overweight, nerdy or a feminized and eroticised audience. By doing such, the fan appears helpless and weak towards the texts that they consume
(Jenkins, 1992, p. 19). Alternatively, other academics allow fans to be active, but they criticise this activeness as they perceive it to be inappropriate,
uneducated and of lower class culture (Jenkins, 1992, pp. 17–19). For instance, this view insists fans cannot make distinctions between fantasy and
reality which opposes the boundaries of dominant ideologies on reading practices (Jenkins, 1992, p. 17). Moreover, these fans are criticised for their
readings strategies as they use readings practices of high cultural texts for texts that are of popular mass culture (Jenkins, 1992, p. 17). Case studies
revolving around this perspective might be similar to the upheaval caused when a Harry Potter fan sexualised Emma Watson, the actress of the
character Hermione. The fan took images of the actress and edited her face onto various child–pornographic images which is definitely an eroticised
version of fan culture. (Daily Mail, 2010). By focusing on these single cases, fans on a broader scale become associated with such culture and, hence,
it is viable to see how, academics have been able to create the stereotypes that all fans are passive, uneducated and at the bottom of cultural status

Describe and Analyse a Subculture with Which You Are Familiar
Describe and analyse a subculture with which you are familiar.
The definition of a subculture is a culture within a culture where a group develops distinctive norms and values that are different from those of the
mainstream culture.
The subculture that I will be writing about is called the Fan Base which is also know as the Fandom.
A fan base or fandom is a group of regular supporters and enthusiasts that spend a rather large amount of time and energy focussing on a team,
musician or musical group, entertainer or any other celebrity; these different people/groups can be classed as sort of a leader or main person that holds
the group together.
Fan bases do not majorly differ from mainstream cultures when it comes to values ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, for many fan bases there are expectations for each fan to have some form of social networking account so then they can communicate with other
fans. Websites such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr would be the main examples of ways to communicate between fans. For music based fandoms,
there is the expectation of having to be at concerts, signings, radio tours and any other events that the musician/band they follow attend.
For fan bases there is not necessarily a method for learning the groups 'rules' or norms as you become part of a fan base by simply having
something common with another fan, so liking the same band or television show, having the same dedication toward a team or band and so on. This
means that you are automatically accepted as part of the group, however a lot of fans get agitated when fans that are part of their fandom decide to
'move fandoms' as they see it as a sort of betrayal to their 'leader', this can lead to unruly behaviour and many arguments within the fan base itself.
This kind of subculture emerged originally in the 1960s when pop music first arrived on the scene. It was during a time when teenagers wanted to
rebel against the system or just wanted be different to everyone else and this kind of music allowed them to do so. The first fan bases came about
because of groups like The Rolling Stones and the Beatles, these particular groups especially had an impact on mainstream culture as many teenagers

The Gendering Of Gender And Gender Roles In Advertising
"The gendering of programming allows the industry to provide the proper audience for advertisers by constructing shows pleasurable for the target
audience to watch, and one aspect of this construction is in the gender portrayals of characters" (Craig, 188). Advertisers use many approaches to make
their product more attractive for us to purchase. One form of using different approaches is using stereotyping by gender. This idea is focused on
attraction; for example, a woman is going to be more attracted toward the handsome looking man and associate that product with him or associate the
product with personable looks. Using this idea, advertisers intentionally put attractive men or women in their advertisements to create a more attractive
theme for their product. In most of their commercials, Fiat, has tried to make their commercials distinctly different or interesting. Analytically "pulling
apart" one of Fiats commercials can show how advertisers are using different non–conformist plot ideas, the idea of "a man's woman," or a perfect
woman from the man's point of view, and the idea of a shifting "geek" culture.
Imagine a younger, geeky man walking down the busy city street, one second minding his own business, but the next second, he is blown away by a
beautiful woman. He stops in his tracks as she bends down to scratch her ankle. She clandestinely catches him "checking her out" while she is wearing
her red and black business dress. He attempts to stealthily look away,

The name of this book is Jake Reinvented. One of the main themes in Jake Reinvented is some people will do anything to keep there past behind them
even if that means to change yourself into something you thought you would never be. These paper is going to how this is the theme of Jake
Reinvented and show that this is one of the main themes in Jake Reinvented. I well cover three different scene in the book from them beginning to the
end of the book.
The first scene that supports my theme is the scene when Jake tells Rick to bring Jenifer to the next party and Didi come with and she see Jake and
realizes that he was here old mat tutor from McKinley. This is the first major scene that comes up in the book that shows part of Jakes old self and
what he was before he started going to Rick's school. These two–quotation show that Jake was kind of a nerd Back at his old school. The first quote
comes for page 42 when Didi says, " Jake used to go to McKinley! He was my math tutor. If it were not for him I would still be in the tenth grade."
That Jake did have a different school and did know some thing about math. The next quote also comes for Didi and this quote show that Jake was
some kind of nerd because he did study and help Didi a lot. The quote comes for page 43 "Remember the time that I had a test

Jap An Electronic Wonderland
The Akihabara district of Tokyo, Japan is an electronic wonderland with endless sights to see and a history that doesn't seem to fit its light–hearted
appearance. Once a post–war black market, Akihabara is now the center of all things relating to anime, manga, and videogames ("Akihabara").
Traveling to this unique location would be an experience that would not be forgotten. Akihabara has always been an important location in Japan, even
during the Edo period. It was a crossroad that was often traveled by commoner and nobility alike due to being an outlet to two of Japan's "Great
Highways" at the time ("Akihabara"). Many daimyo (great lords who were vassals of the Shogun) traveled through this crossroad on their way to the
capital. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Poor university students would search the markets for the best price on radio parts and then use said parts to create a radio to resell (DrSenbei).
However, the black–market craze did not last too long because open air markets were banned in 1949 to stop the unregulated trades. Stall owners
fought back by rallying with the Vendors Union at government buildings. The government's response was to allot space for the merchants on the
station grounds. Many merchants went around this by building their own stores, some of which were seven stories tall. They used these stores to
capitalize the post–war economy through the sale of household electronics (DrSenbei). The next generation had unlimited luxuries because of their
fathers' large salaries. Their time was occupied with any new gadget that came out, and they sparked the beginning of the otaku (diehard fan) revolution
that has now taken over Akihabara.
With the creation of computers and the internet, the building blocks for a new Akihabara were set in place. Computer shops sprang up all throughout
the district and the population began to shift from full families to young men looking to set up shop. Personal Computers were being sold more often
than household electronics by 1994. This is what truly changed the future of the Akihabara district (DrSenbei). A few doujinshi (a fan mademanga)
shops began to pop up in the district, most having been run by employees at computer

The Importance Of The Geek Culture
Today Geek Culture is a widely acknowledged sub–culture across the world. Technology and media are ever changing and the Geek Culture reflects
the changes with the acceptance of "nerds", "otaku", and the "dweeb". Though mostly meant as derogatory terms they are now seen as acceptable jokes
that are popular in this moment of history. Nerds are the socially awkward and intelligent population the term is also interchangeable with its outdated
counterpart dweeb. Otaku was used to insult adults who enjoyed anime that though not meant for children was still considered cartoons therefore
childish; but now many refer to themselves as an otaku.
Though accepted common stereotypes about the culture and its population still persist. The most prominent misconceptions include the belief that
otaku are nothing but lazy, incompetent men that are all N.E.E.T. or hikikomori, not in education employment or training and someone who shuts
themselves in there room away from society respectively, that don't contribute to society in any meaningful way. Some believe that everything otaku
related is like a cancer infecting and affecting the "healthy "parts of society which is like calling it criminal to be an otaku. The perverted, lazy, and
deadbeat otaku only make up the smallest but most visible portion of otaku society.
The prevalent stereotypes about the otaku/anime fans is easily viewed when typing in google "why are anime fans..." or "why are otakus..." and the
autocomplete fills in with so ugly,

How Do Nerds Affect Society?
In high school, we have always seen the few people who seem more intelligent than others. The people who seem to have an answer for every time
the teacher has a question and receive A's on every test, quiz, or homework grade. These people are classified by society as nerds. Many nerds are
well known throughout society. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, and Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, are just a couple of the numerous amounts
of nerds in the world who have impacted the world; however, many nerds are ostracized from the world. Because nerds study rather than socialize and
think on a faster pace than the average human, nerds are typically ostracized from society. Nerds would rather study to get an A on their next quiz

Nerds are able to think faster because of the constant studying they do daily. They must be able to retain a numerous amount of information to be
able to make the grades that everyone expects of them. Nerds accomplish this because their brains have adapted to the lifestyle of studying
constantly. This lifestyle requires them to be able to learn a huge amount of information in a short amount of time. Because of this continuous
lifestyle, the brain of nerds is able to think on a much faster pace; however, this may cause confusion when a nerd may have a conversation with
his or her peers. Because a nerd's knowledge and vocabulary may be much more advanced than many of his or her peers' knowledge and
vocabulary, he or she may have a higher level of speaking as well. When people try to have a conversation with a nerd, they may feel like the nerd
is trying to sound superior because of the complex vocabulary the nerd uses. Nerds may not notice that the way they speak may sound like a
foreign language to many of the people around them. This can lead to nerds being ignored by their peers. Some nerds may believe they are superior
to other people. Because of their high level of thinking, many nerds think everyone else in the world is an ignoramus. The level of thinking of nerds

My Community Identity
I am part of an online anime fandom, which is my community which I have been a part of since the 90's, that is compromised of anime fans, friends,
family and even the voice actors themselves. The Internet plays an even stronger role in promoting social integration by facilitating regular
communication among family, friends, and groups base on identity and affinity (people with common identities, conditions, experiences, or interests,
especially based on work.) Kottack(2012) I came across anime back in the 90's, thanks to the recommendation of my nephew to watch an episode of
one series called Yu Yu Hakusho (which became my utmost favorite) and since then I became hooked. Of course anime has been around longer than
that and I did watch some growing up. I knew back then that these were different from American cartoons. Not just by the way they were drawn, but
with the storylines that had more impact, defining the world around us than the one liner jokes that were in the majority of cartoons. Of course I
wanted more anime, but back then they were harder to come by then they are now. I grew up before the Internet came into being and now, thanks to the
Internet I can locate and buy anime from Ebay and Amazon let alone watch them online as well. I made many friends, both on–line and off–line by
being in an online anime fandom community who all had a similar interest in anime like I

Rhetorical Analysis America Needs Its Nerds

the nerds and geeks in America are being ignored and overlooked. The author uses negative words like ostracized, ashamed, and rampant to convey
the reader about the subject. "Nerds are ostracized while athletes are idolized", is one of the lines in this passage Leonid Fridman uses to express a

Modern Media And Its Impact On Society
Most countries around the world have cities and people that exist within media saturated spheres. Consumerism and commodification promote items to
most economic classes, and through marketing they are urged to purchase and consume the products advertised. Japan is no exception to this, but
there is a slight difference that appears to set Japan apart ever so slightly. In Japan, there is a group of consumers, sometimes regarded as a
subculture, known as the otaku. For now, just bear in mind that the otaku are a group of consumers, often male, who purchase items associated with
popular cartoons, videogames, and comics. They purchase these items and care for them with a reverence comparable to Western fandoms. The otaku,
however, are more than fans. They engage in normal fandom behaviors, such as consuming popular media, creating works associated with the media
they are a fan of, and supporting the creator or studio that produces the media they are fans of. In addition to these behaviors, the otaku also live in a
society that is heavily influenced by rigid societal structures and tradition. With these elements in mind, the otaku can be examined in a myriad of ways.
Historicism, sociology, anthropology, fandom studies, and feminism are just a few of the ways in which to examine this group. Many may wonder
why studying this group may be beneficial, and the reason is that this dissertation has found just one of many reasons to examine the otaku. The reason
is that their

Fan Identity
One of the main points of discussion is the idea of the "fanatic" itself and how fandom is an accepted mode of obsession in the contemporary world.
Much of the discourse on the subject deals with the complex psychology of the word through anthropological and psychoanalytical work on what it
means to be a fan – the mixture of reverence for their object of affection, but also the embarrassment of being associated with what some might deem
as "crazy" or "superficial." The definition of "fan" has altered over time, with it becoming increasingly negative. Many fans even shy away from calling
themselves that, or separate their fandom identity (often found online) with their real life identity. While much has been written in the beginning of

Article Review : Geek Policing : Fake Geek Girls And...
Despite the fact that the science fiction genre was created by a woman, science fiction is now overrun by people who now feel the need to write
articles titled "Dear Fake Geek Girls: Please Go Away" (Brown, 2012). This article will summarize the works of Joseph Reagle and his article "Geek
Policing: Fake Geek Girls and Contested Attention" (2015). "Each post about fake geek girls shows that question of attention is significant within geek
culture" (Reagle, 2015). To explain this, Reagle (2015) uses Bourdieu's theory of fields and capital, complemented by literature on geeks, authenticity
and boundary policing; this allows the ability to identify the reciprocal relationship between the policing of identity and the policing of social
boundaries. "Finally, the conversation tended to manifest the values of dominant members meaning that, in a discourse started by a woman to encourage
other women to be geeky, some of the loudest voices were those judging women's bodies and brains according to traditionally androcentric and
heteronormative views" (Reagle, 2015). In 2009, J.A. McArthur wrote about what it means to be 'geeky': "To be geek is to be engaged, to be
enthralled in a topic, and then to act on that engagement." And what a better way to act upon that engagement then to act on it with other people who
also enjoy it. This is where the problem lies; "although done in good fun, geeks are keen to not only identify the various facets of their identity, but test,

My Friend Crystal Is A Person Of Significance
My friend Crystal is a person of significance in my life. She showed me that there are friends out there who will go further and beyond for you. I

Sakura Matsuri is a huge place so it isn't likely you will run into someone you saw twice. Coincidently I did end up running into them a lot while I

opposite direction. They were always just at the place I was heading to. Every time we saw each other we would wave and say "Hello". I met them
again while they were chatting with a cosplayer they just met and made friends with. I asked their new friend Emmett if I could have a picture
because they were dressed as Kaneki too. Emmett said "Sure" and I got my picture. Cyrstal, Jessy and me started to chat about how it's funny that we

The Otaku : Popular Culture And Pop Culture
For those believing that this means revering the otaku lifestyle as the next evolutionary line of Japanese society, a clarification may be need. An otaku,
as westerners may have heard its usage, is a person who spend most of their time at home remaining socially inactive in favor of interacting with pop
culture like anime, manga, video games and collectibles. The stereotype is very similar to the American comic book or figurine collector. Unlike its
American counterpart who is defined by what they collect or play, an otaku is more of an umbrella term for all people who are uncongenially
reclusive. Otaku's original meaning that is still used in different contexts is an honorific term for someone else's home. Thus, otaku in the derogatory ...

The phrase began as a marketing expression but slowly started to refer to the entire "feminine" side of Japanese pop culture. The production of
OnmyЕЌji and other Abeno Seimei content is the epitome of "girls content". Still, girls content is not a perfect reflection of otaku as the stigma against
women's consumption of pop culture seems to be considerable less in some respects. If women are not blatant counterculture fujoshi, not too many
eyebrows are raised about women engaging in pop culture. This may be due to the remnants of pre–war Neo–Confucianism that dictated that Japanese
men be the head of the household as well as social breadwinners. The ideal woman, on the other hand, only attended to matters of the home. Even now,
it is deemed strange and against the cultural grain when a "otaku" man decides to spend most of his time at home.
Thus, rendering fanbases to a handful of stereotypes prevents a full understanding of Shinto in pop culture cults, and by extension undermines the
Shinto rituals the fandoms engage in. An average Shinto worshipper goes to shrine to pray to the shrine's kami and donate to the shrine's upkeep be it
directly or through the purchase of charms. Fans act similarly by traveling to pay their respects to the series and buying merchandise to support not
only the series but also the related shrine and the surrounding community. It is understandable if writing wishes on ema plaques for the continuation of
a series and buying omamori

I Am A Nerd In Dr. Suess's If I Ran A Zoo
I am a Nerd. In the social hierarchy that is public school, nerds are typically placed at the bottom. They are written off as awkward, unattractive, and
unsociable. This common misconception of what a nerd truly is often completely ignores or overshadows the truth. The word "nerd" was first used
in Dr. Suess's "If I Ran a Zoo", in which the main character, Gerald McGrew, described a creature in his zoo called a "nerd" as "a grumpy humanoid
with unruly hair and sideburns, wearing a black T–shirt." (Burrows). This description is fitting for the way that the term is used today, however it is
inaccurate as to what the word has come to mean. In actuality, nerds are the bosses, the doctors, the lawyers, and the teachers. One may wonder how
this is the case, seeing as how someone as clearly awkward, unattractive, and unsociable as a nerd could never thrive in such socially demanding
positions; it truly is a mystery. I spent my whole childhood sorting through this mystery, being classified and categorized in my peers' minds as a

A nerd is someone who has a desire to learn. Someone who has a passion for gaining knowledge and for excelling in academics could be accurately
labeled as a nerd. This refusal to submit to the ignorance that has become far too common in our society is something to be revered rather than
something to be shamed. Intelligence should be celebrated and encouraged. Nerd, however, remains an insult, a degrading term used by the ignorant

Analysis Of Takashi Murakami : High And Low
Eli Brennan 12/1/16
Takashi Murakami: High and Low
Post–war Japanese society is a world where High and Low art is blurred together by otaku, such as anime, and social class. However, Takashi Murakami
straddles the line. Murakami spills a mix of Nihanga and Otaku into the canvases, plastic toys, handbags, shoes, etc; endorsing his own theory/style
named "Superflat". Using strategical subject matter such as popular Japanese comic figures combined with ukiyo–e(traditional Japanese block prints),
and addressing these contrasting qualities to outside cultures; Murakami intensifies what Pop Art accomplished, art versus material. On other feelings,
one could argue that "Superflat" isn't a unique, Japan–identified style, that "Superflat" is a humiliation to the Contemporary Art world because of its
commercialism. Lastly, that is a continuation of the already well developed Pop Art. On the supporting side, Murakami's "Superflat" is a high–energy,
cross–culture style that serves as a new way to represent the high and low of art that is considerably unique to Japan. To support this, Murakami's past
and present artwork will have to be established chronologically to illustrate how the timeline affects his work.
Considered one of the more known names in the contemporary art world, Japanese artist Takashi Murakami 's work is popping with overly saturated
colors and otaku, making it immediately recognizable. Born in Tokyo in 1962, Murakami

By focusing on these single cases, fans on a broader scale become associated with such culture and, hence,
it is viable to see how, academics have been able to create the stereotypes that all fans are passive, uneducated and at the bottom of cultural status

not only "strong and silent" cowboys frequently show their macho, trigger–happy, and tough to the outside as stereotypes, but they also are convivial,
quirky, and softhearted. She proved that cowboys don't know how to express their emotions to women, and they have a sense of compassion. Cowboys

Katie Mellema (Fig.22) an experienced cosplayer, shared some insight into this issue in an article on Cosplayers vs. the World: Social Issues (Volume

are "asking for it".

Out of all the instruments in the world, the human voice is the most difficult for a computer to imitate since it is so complex. However that is just what
the average person thinks. During Miku's Live Party –39s Live in Tokyo– concert, just when the girl steps out on stage to sing "When the First Love
Ends", she turns away teary–eyed trying to compose herself. The crowd went nuts! Fans cry over depressing songs such as "Servant of Evil", "Paper

people, who disapprove of VOCALOID for being fake, are afraid of is that "robots are gonna take over the world".
A human singer could feel threatened by the technology, fearing that they will be replaced. Aoi, the guitarist and backing vocals of the Japanese Visual

America Needs Its Nerds Analysis
America Needs its Nerds
Pigtails, thick glasses, high waisted pants, and headgear. What do those words remind you of? Americas culture has stereotyped nerds and geeks like
this. Many people, especially in the past, have felt ashamed and ostracized to be who they were. The word "nerd and geek" used to be a derogatory
name according to Leonid Fridman the author of "America Needs Its Nerds". However, in modern day these words are not as harmful or insulting as
they were in the past. Many students are ashamed of their intelligence because society has not accepted "nerds" and "geeks". While Fridman is correct
in certain aspects of his essay, some statements he makes are overexaggerated.
Throughout the article, Fridman used many examples as evidence to support his claim that nerds and geeks are ostracized. Fridman's tone and diction
make the reader feel that nerds and geeks are considered social outcast and are sometimes rejected by American culture. Fridman uses an example of

Being A Nerd Essay
Being a nerd isn't always easy for anyone. Of course, being a nerd is pretty much anyone's opinionated definition, but this is what I think the
definition is. There has always been a stigma around being a nerd. Nerds are usually associated with never showering, lacking a socially acceptable
amount of friends, and parent's being harder on them. Being a nerd has its upsides, like willing to learn, or the ability to soak in a lot of information
and put it to use. The downside, however, usually nerds lack social skills that otherwise normal people would have. Walking into a place that contains
people that I don't know makes it feel like I just walked into a giant social force field. Any attempt at social anxiety will go wrong, I have no doubt about

Instead of learning being a chore, it becomes a necessity. Being a nerd pretty much makes you a lifelong learner. Most people will not go out of

interesting, especially when it involves something as interesting as space. A nerd won't ever really be satisfied when it comes to learning in class,
and will always strive to learn more stuff. A nerd is always ahead of the game when it comes to educating themselves on subjects that will be

that know the answer. Nerds have a wide range of topics that they find interesting. For me, personally, it's space and computers. Both of these areas
fascinate me more than anything else in the world. Usually, nerds tend to gravitate toward each other which means that usually a group assignment

Summary Of Fridman's Definition Of A Geek
The author, Fridman, begins to form his position (defending unappreciated intellectuals) by defining the term "geek". A geek, is a street performer who

appalling term and society is terrible for using this term to allude an intellectually curious person is a freak who bites the heads of live chickens.
Fridman gives examples of some of the types of people in society who would be discredited for being academically serious. At Harvard, many students

America Needs Its Nerds Rhetorical Analysis
Leonid Fridman, the author of the article,"America Need Its Nerds" in the New York Times, addresses how geeks and nerd are portrayed negatively in
American society. He asserts the faults in American society's values in order to convince the readers of the New York Times to appreciate the
intellectually curious instead of degrading them. Fridman integrates logos, ethos, and pathos to support his objective of persuading the readers of the
New York Times to acknowledge the intellectuals rather than patronizing them.

Fridman addresses values pathos through "nerd and geeks must stop being ashamed of who they are" (P.6). This states that geeks should feel regret
for every academical stride they accomplished in life since to American society, their acts are considered unworthy for applause. There influenced to
change their perspective of their achievements to the point where they degrade it despite their all their effort. Friedman utilizes that for the readers of
the New York Times to feel pity for the geeks that degrade their successes due to it being considered undeserving in order for them to appreciate the
intellectual rather than reduce their value. Then he integrates sociological pathos from "How can a country where typical parents are ashamed of their
daughter studying mathematics instead of going dancing... be expected to compete in the technology race with Japan or remain a leading political and
cultural force in Europe" (P.9). Fridman identifies that the culture of America has parents portraying their children's academic achievements as an
embarrassment since American society deduct the value of such act, while in other countries of the world, they view intellectual as a sign of future
leaders governing the country. Fridman persuades the readers to empathize towards his frustration since America are the only ones that has

The Culture Of Geek Culture
Globalization has intertwined us up to the point where the whole world has become one entity. Consequently, different cultures have been integrated to
what we today known as popular culture. The Internet has converted everything instantly viral like movies, series, book sagas, comics, anime and
video games. There is no place on social media where you cannot feel identified with someone with an affinity of your resemblance. Today, being ageek
is not an oddity, to the contrary, being a geek has become part of popculture up to the point where it has turned into a part of our identity. As the
evolution of technology has connected identities from all around the world, geek culture has created a network of individuals with mutual values in
spite of their race, ethnicity and cultural traditions.
Before the internet became the network that we know today, "geek" was a term that our society looked down upon. "Geek" used to be related to
people who had knowledge about technology, in other words those who were classified as "nerds". These kind of classifications were seen as a bad
characteristic. Being a geek made you an outcast, geeks and nerds couldn't even think of being accepted into the popular groups due to their weird
personalities and preferences. Nevertheless, as technology evolved and the creation of the Internet interconnected our world, the word geek has been
deconstructed up to the point where its past meaning makes no relevance to today's definition. Geek, as today's

Japan's Pop Culture
The author's main idea is that "The challenge to the industry in Japan is finding enough young people willing and able to create and export Japan's
products of popular culture, while the challenger in America is creating an audience that will continue to consume those products as it ages." When he
saw his friend tried to make her daughter stop crying with Totoro, he thought there is something. He also realized that many of his American friends
have a copy of Miyzaki films in their living room after that. But two questions occurred. "Why Japan? And why now?" So he decided to take
interviews to many people.
He mentioned the word "Otaku." He said that the term embraced by Americans. Because of the success of computer and industries around it, people
who were negatively called geeks or nerds got the status now. Still there is negative image of otaku, in the US media, the word often express pleasure.
It started to appear in film title or convention name. Author wanted this lead the change of stereotype of the Asian male in America, who are often

Summary Of America Needs It Nerds
"America Needs It Nerds" by Leonid Fridman talks about how the American society looks down on "geeks" or the intellectually curious and
academically serious people. Fridman believes that if America continues to do this it will lead to a negative on how other countries look at us. Leonid
Fridman made his argument using ethos, cause and effect, rhetorical questions, and pathos. In this passage Fridman started off in the second paragraph
using ethos to develop his argument. He cites Webster's new World Dictionary definition of ageek, which is the word society uses to describe
academically serious individuals. The definition given is a "street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens. This

Towards the end of the passage Fridman asks many rhetorical questions. One of the questions asked " how will America remain a world– class power
if we constantly emphasize social skills and physical prowess over academic achievement...?! This question makes readers think of how this societal
issue can lead to something bigger like America losing its " world– class power title". This question can strike the American patriot readers or people
that hold America in a high estate.
Lastly, Leonid Fridman used Pathos to develop his argument. This whole passage gives the intellectual curious and academically serious people a
voice. A reader who has dealt with being excluded from society and looked down on as a freak will now feel as though their voice will be heard.
Fridman states how this issue is not only geared towards adults in paragraph 4 he explains how children as young in elementary school are being
educated for who they are and their academic abilities. This gives readers an eye opener that if even young kids are going through this then the

  • 2. Beauty and the Geek Watching television is one of usually pastimes for people, especially watching reality television. According to the Oxford dictionary reality television is a "television programs in which real people are continuously filmed, designed to be entertaining rather than informative" (Oxford). Beauty and the Geek pairs together "Geeks" (socially inelegant nerd breeds) and "Beauties" (beautiful women handpicked for depicting bimbos), who then take on challenges. Each week one couple is forced to leave the house and the last remaining couple wins $250,000 in prizes. Along the way the geeks are renovated, and the beauties learn various things about geek culture. Beauty and the geek amplifies a negative stereotype of men and women enforced by pairing smart, nerdy men with women focused on looks. By asking the women carefully selected questions, they are made to look ditzy enforcing the negative stereotype. Before the beauties were chosen for the show they were interviewed, taped and further asked a few uncomplicated questions but to them were quite complex for they looked confused and puzzled after being questioned. Sim Ahmed talks about when the producers were scouting for beauties, they looked for several things: Gorgeous women that were "preened and ready to take center stage, but ask their opinion on politics, the solution to a mathematical equation, or how to reboot a hard drive and they'll be stumped" (Ahmed). Nadia Underwood was asked in her interview, "what weighs more? A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Disadvantages Of Cosplayers Cosplay has the ability to transform cosplayers into their heroes, whoever they are. But things haven't always been that ideal. Unfortunately, body shaming and bullying and abusing are very real and prominent issues for cosplayers at conventions. The sting of negative comments can carry over into regular life for some and even lead to anxiety or depression (Arielle Lien and psychologist Dr. Beth Murphy). Katie Mellema (Fig.22) an experienced cosplayer, shared some insight into this issue in an article on Cosplayers vs. the World: Social Issues (Volume I) by Jade Chambers (2013). Fig.22 Cosplay Photo of Katie She recalls "I remember going to the mall with a friend and walking past a cosplayer in Lolita dress. I applauded her courage and sense of style while my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, fans or the audience forget that there are individuals inside those costumes. They are overwhelmed by the fact that their favourite character has come to life and end up crossing their limits. Sometimes audiences assume that cosplayers are dressed up in a provocative manner of because they are "asking for it". This causes sexual and verbal harassment. Women have been groped, and men have been put down for not fitting or perfectly fitting a certain costume. Thus, certain organizers are trying to bring awareness to this issue by implementing anti–harassment policies. In New York's Comic Con, attendees can see a large sign that says 'Cosplay is not Consent', and that everyone should be treated with respect. (2014) Harrassment is not limited to just female cosplayers. Male cosplayer John of "Moderately Okay Cosplay" has been groped multiple times while dressed as anime and video game characters. "It didn't really affect me much. It surprised me more than anything, like a 'Did that just happen?' type of thing," he said. Fig.24 Cosplay is not consent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Informative Essay On Nerds What is a Nerd? Nerds. 4.0 Gpa. High Honors. Science clubs. Math clubs. Awkward. Weirdly dressed. All of these ideas come to mind when someone says the word nerd. Nerds are easy to spot. Nerds are everywhere, in the halls, in the classrooms, in the stores. Over the past four years I've been pegged as a nerd, mega nerd and even "an advanced nerd," (what does that even mean?), and I've learned to embrace those terms, not letting them bring me down. Being called a nerd nowadays is more of a compliment than it is an insult. But being called a nerd raises the question, How, or why, is being smart or passionate on a topic a bad thing? Before calling someone a nerd, one must take a hard look at what it means to be a nerd, what it's not. What does... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These posers pretend to be nerds, "like" and tell people they like to do nerdy things and often are just trying to labeled a nerd to be "cool." The next type of nerd are those who excel in one interest, such as art, a movie series or fantasy stuff, the "fandom nerds" (Hypsibema). Those people who fall into these categories are more geeks than nerds, as they focus mainly on excelling in their interests (WikiHow). Then there are the nerds. A majority of the populations "nerds" fit into category. These people do not classify or call themselves nerds, as it is usually a title granted to them because they hear it so often (Hypsibema). These are the people who are bullied the hardest, those who feel the affects of being a nerd the most, and feel the worst about being one. These negatives however deep, do not hinder them from doing what they love the most. Lastly, there are those who are geniuses. These are the nerds that are exceptionally smart, well– rounded people. • 5. Freaks And Geeks Analysis Freaks and Geeks is a show about the relationships between the so called "freaks" of high school and the "geeks." The show tries to show that the two groups are very different yet the same in many ways. Does the series premiere of this show reflect these ideologies? For those elders who have no idea what the show is about; "Freaks and Geeks" is a television show that aired one season in 1999. It focuses mainly around two cliques in high school: the freaks and the geeks. Lindsay Weir and her younger brother Sam Weir are the protagonists of the story. From the start, the audience learns that Lindsay is a top student and the best mathlete in the school, but recently she's been acting up. • 6. Star Wars Versus Star Trek Essay Star Wars versus Star Trek. Marvel versus DC. Gandalf versus Dumbledore. Batman versus Superman. Almost everyone that could be asked could pick a side on these topics and their even smaller debated parts: Jedi versus Sith, Captain Kirk versus Captain Piccard, etc. Superhero movies are almost always a hit every year for the summer box office. Except superheroes were not always everyone 's favorite, nor socially accepted in America. This was originally subject matter that stayed within the confines of a certain social class, the nerds and geeks. Nerd culture rose within mainstream culture and media through a staunch refusal to be put to the side and belittled when it did hit big. It has stayed largely and long enough so that most people will tell you that superheroes and space pilots and "all culture is nerd culture now." (Rosenberg, Alyssa) "But something that stung even worse than a towel–snap was often getting labeled a "nerd" or a "geek."" Ryan Britt opens up his series of essays Luke Skywalker Can 't Read and Other Geeky Truths talking about being in middle school in 1994 in the boys locker room. Being called "queer" and "loser" were common but the label of "nerd" or "geek" was something even worse. Little over 20 years ago such words were not quirky little things you used to describe yourself as would be used now. Nerd is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as someone who is "a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious." The image of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Harry Potter Fandom Stereotypes The word fandom, tends to be associated as an audience of passivity, obsession or even violence. As research has advanced, it is viable to see that these connotations are not entirely valid. Instead the research on fandom is revealing to be more complex than initially thought. The following essay will substantiate this claim, by showing how negative stereotypes of the fan may be disputed. This will be done through the use of the Harry Potter fandom. Firstly, the essay will introduce the concept of a fan. Following this, an analysis will be given as to how fans are not only an active subcultural community of readers, but also how they use these mechanisms to be powerful political and social agents. Additionally, the complexity of the fan shall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 10–17). This perspective tries to override the power that fans appear to have over dominant ideology. This mask of passivity labels the fan as an overweight, nerdy or a feminized and eroticised audience. By doing such, the fan appears helpless and weak towards the texts that they consume (Jenkins, 1992, p. 19). Alternatively, other academics allow fans to be active, but they criticise this activeness as they perceive it to be inappropriate, uneducated and of lower class culture (Jenkins, 1992, pp. 17–19). For instance, this view insists fans cannot make distinctions between fantasy and reality which opposes the boundaries of dominant ideologies on reading practices (Jenkins, 1992, p. 17). Moreover, these fans are criticised for their readings strategies as they use readings practices of high cultural texts for texts that are of popular mass culture (Jenkins, 1992, p. 17). Case studies revolving around this perspective might be similar to the upheaval caused when a Harry Potter fan sexualised Emma Watson, the actress of the character Hermione. The fan took images of the actress and edited her face onto various child–pornographic images which is definitely an eroticised version of fan culture. (Daily Mail, 2010). By focusing on these single cases, fans on a broader scale become associated with such culture and, hence, it is viable to see how, academics have been able to create the stereotypes that all fans are passive, uneducated and at the bottom of cultural status (Jenkins, 1992, pp. ... • 8. Describe and Analyse a Subculture with Which You Are Familiar Describe and analyse a subculture with which you are familiar. The definition of a subculture is a culture within a culture where a group develops distinctive norms and values that are different from those of the mainstream culture. The subculture that I will be writing about is called the Fan Base which is also know as the Fandom. A fan base or fandom is a group of regular supporters and enthusiasts that spend a rather large amount of time and energy focussing on a team, musician or musical group, entertainer or any other celebrity; these different people/groups can be classed as sort of a leader or main person that holds the group together. Fan bases do not majorly differ from mainstream cultures when it comes to values ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, for many fan bases there are expectations for each fan to have some form of social networking account so then they can communicate with other fans. Websites such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr would be the main examples of ways to communicate between fans. For music based fandoms, there is the expectation of having to be at concerts, signings, radio tours and any other events that the musician/band they follow attend. For fan bases there is not necessarily a method for learning the groups 'rules' or norms as you become part of a fan base by simply having something common with another fan, so liking the same band or television show, having the same dedication toward a team or band and so on. This means that you are automatically accepted as part of the group, however a lot of fans get agitated when fans that are part of their fandom decide to 'move fandoms' as they see it as a sort of betrayal to their 'leader', this can lead to unruly behaviour and many arguments within the fan base itself. This kind of subculture emerged originally in the 1960s when pop music first arrived on the scene. It was during a time when teenagers wanted to rebel against the system or just wanted be different to everyone else and this kind of music allowed them to do so. The first fan bases came about because of groups like The Rolling Stones and the Beatles, these particular groups especially had an impact on mainstream culture as many teenagers spent a

  • 10. The Gendering Of Gender And Gender Roles In Advertising "The gendering of programming allows the industry to provide the proper audience for advertisers by constructing shows pleasurable for the target audience to watch, and one aspect of this construction is in the gender portrayals of characters" (Craig, 188). Advertisers use many approaches to make their product more attractive for us to purchase. One form of using different approaches is using stereotyping by gender. This idea is focused on attraction; for example, a woman is going to be more attracted toward the handsome looking man and associate that product with him or associate the product with personable looks. Using this idea, advertisers intentionally put attractive men or women in their advertisements to create a more attractive theme for their product. In most of their commercials, Fiat, has tried to make their commercials distinctly different or interesting. Analytically "pulling apart" one of Fiats commercials can show how advertisers are using different non–conformist plot ideas, the idea of "a man's woman," or a perfect woman from the man's point of view, and the idea of a shifting "geek" culture. Imagine a younger, geeky man walking down the busy city street, one second minding his own business, but the next second, he is blown away by a beautiful woman. However, the black–market craze did not last too long because open air markets were banned in 1949 to stop the unregulated trades. Stall owners fought back by rallying with the Vendors Union at government buildings. The government's response was to allot space for the merchants on the station grounds. Many merchants went around this by building their own stores, some of which were seven stories tall. They used these stores to capitalize the post–war economy through the sale of household electronics (DrSenbei). The next generation had unlimited luxuries because of their fathers' large salaries. Their time was occupied with any new gadget that came out, and they sparked the beginning of the otaku (diehard fan) revolution that has now taken over Akihabara. With the creation of computers and the internet, the building blocks for a new Akihabara were set in place. Consumerism and commodification promote items to most economic classes, and through marketing they are urged to purchase and consume the products advertised. Japan is no exception to this, but there is a slight difference that appears to set Japan apart ever so slightly. In Japan, there is a group of consumers, sometimes regarded as a subculture, known as the otaku. For now, just bear in mind that the otaku are a group of consumers, often male, who purchase items associated with popular cartoons, videogames, and comics. They purchase these items and care for them with a reverence comparable to Western fandoms. The otaku, however, are more than fans. They engage in normal fandom behaviors, such as consuming popular media, creating works associated with the media they are a fan of, and supporting the creator or studio that produces the media they are fans of. In addition to these behaviors, the otaku also live in a society that is heavily influenced by rigid societal structures and tradition. With these elements in mind, the otaku can be examined in a myriad of ways. Despite the fact that the science fiction genre was created by a woman, science fiction is now overrun by people who now feel the need to write articles titled "Dear Fake Geek Girls: Please Go Away" (Brown, 2012). This article will summarize the works of Joseph Reagle and his article "Geek Policing: Fake Geek Girls and Contested Attention" (2015). "Each post about fake geek girls shows that question of attention is significant within geek culture" (Reagle, 2015). To explain this, Reagle (2015) uses Bourdieu's theory of fields and capital, complemented by literature on geeks, authenticity and boundary policing; this allows the ability to identify the reciprocal relationship between the policing of identity and the policing of social boundaries. "Finally, the conversation tended to manifest the values of dominant members meaning that, in a discourse started by a woman to encourage other women to be geeky, some of the loudest voices were those judging women's bodies and brains according to traditionally androcentric and heteronormative views" (Reagle, 2015). In 2009, J.A. McArthur wrote about what it means to be 'geeky': "To be geek is to be engaged, to be enthralled in a topic, and then to act on that engagement." And what a better way to act upon that engagement then to act on it with other people who also enjoy it. An otaku, as westerners may have heard its usage, is a person who spend most of their time at home remaining socially inactive in favor of interacting with pop culture like anime, manga, video games and collectibles. The stereotype is very similar to the American comic book or figurine collector. Unlike its American counterpart who is defined by what they collect or play, an otaku is more of an umbrella term for all people who are uncongenially reclusive. The phrase began as a marketing expression but slowly started to refer to the entire "feminine" side of Japanese pop culture. The production of OnmyЕЌji and other Abeno Seimei content is the epitome of "girls content". Still, girls content is not a perfect reflection of otaku as the stigma against women's consumption of pop culture seems to be considerable less in some respects. If women are not blatant counterculture fujoshi, not too many eyebrows are raised about women engaging in pop culture. This may be due to the remnants of pre–war Neo–Confucianism that dictated that Japanese men be the head of the household as well as social breadwinners. The ideal woman, on the other hand, only attended to matters of the home. Even now, it is deemed strange and against the cultural grain when a "otaku" man decides to spend most of his time at home. Thus, rendering fanbases to a handful of stereotypes prevents a full understanding of Shinto in pop culture cults, and by extension undermines the Shinto rituals the fandoms engage in. An average Shinto worshipper goes to shrine to pray to the shrine's kami and donate to the shrine's upkeep be it directly or through the purchase of charms. Analysis Of Takashi Murakami : High And Low Eli Brennan 12/1/16 Takashi Murakami: High and Low Post–war Japanese society is a world where High and Low art is blurred together by otaku, such as anime, and social class. However, Takashi Murakami straddles the line. Murakami spills a mix of Nihanga and Otaku into the canvases, plastic toys, handbags, shoes, etc; endorsing his own theory/style named "Superflat". Using strategical subject matter such as popular Japanese comic figures combined with ukiyo–e(traditional Japanese block prints), and addressing these contrasting qualities to outside cultures; Murakami intensifies what Pop Art accomplished, art versus material. On other feelings, one could argue that "Superflat" isn't a unique, Japan–identified style, that "Superflat" is a humiliation to the Contemporary Art world because of its commercialism. Lastly, that is a continuation of the already well developed Pop Art. On the supporting side, Murakami's "Superflat" is a high–energy, cross–culture style that serves as a new way to represent the high and low of art that is considerably unique to Japan. By focusing on these single cases, fans on a broader scale become associated with such culture and, hence, it is viable to see how, academics have been able to create the stereotypes that all fans are passive, uneducated and at the bottom of cultural status (Jenkins, 1992, pp. ... The word "nerd" was first used in Dr. Suess's "If I Ran a Zoo", in which the main character, Gerald McGrew, described a creature in his zoo called a "nerd" as "a grumpy humanoid with unruly hair and sideburns, wearing a black T–shirt." (Burrows). This description is fitting for the way that the term is used today, however it is inaccurate as to what the word has come to mean. In actuality, nerds are the bosses, the doctors, the lawyers, and the teachers. One may wonder how this is the case, seeing as how someone as clearly awkward, unattractive, and unsociable as a nerd could never thrive in such socially demanding positions; it truly is a mystery. I spent my whole childhood sorting through this mystery, being classified and categorized in my peers' minds as a nerd. I suppose that's because that's what I was. I was the one who would raise my hand to answer my teachers' every... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A nerd is someone who has a desire to learn. Someone who has a passion for gaining knowledge and for excelling in academics could be accurately labeled as a nerd. This refusal to submit to the ignorance that has become far too common in our society is something to be revered rather than something to be shamed. Intelligence should be celebrated and encouraged. Nerd, however, remains an insult, a degrading term used by the ignorant meant only to paint intelligence in a negative light rather than as the truly commendable attribute that it is. This does nothing but discourage growth and push us further into ignorance. Americas culture has stereotyped nerds and geeks like this. Many people, especially in the past, have felt ashamed and ostracized to be who they were. The word "nerd and geek" used to be a derogatory name according to Leonid Fridman the author of "America Needs Its Nerds". However, in modern day these words are not as harmful or insulting as they were in the past. Many students are ashamed of their intelligence because society has not accepted "nerds" and "geeks". While Fridman is correct in certain aspects of his essay, some statements he makes are overexaggerated. Throughout the article, Fridman used many examples as evidence to support his claim that nerds and geeks are ostracized. Fridman's tone and diction make the reader feel that nerds and geeks are considered social outcast and are sometimes rejected by American culture. Fridman uses an example of logos by saying "...in America, where the average professional ballplayer are much more respected and better paid than faculty members of the best universities" (Fridman). • 32. Being A Nerd Essay Being a nerd isn't always easy for anyone. Of course, being a nerd is pretty much anyone's opinionated definition, but this is what I think the definition is. There has always been a stigma around being a nerd. Nerds are usually associated with never showering, lacking a socially acceptable amount of friends, and parent's being harder on them. Being a nerd has its upsides, like willing to learn, or the ability to soak in a lot of information and put it to use. The downside, however, usually nerds lack social skills that otherwise normal people would have. Walking into a place that contains people that I don't know makes it feel like I just walked into a giant social force field. Any attempt at social anxiety will go wrong, I have no doubt about ... Learning new information is always interesting, especially when it involves something as interesting as space. A nerd won't ever really be satisfied when it comes to learning in class, and will always strive to learn more stuff. A nerd is always ahead of the game when it comes to educating themselves on subjects that will be discussed in the next week. A nerd is a person who saves you from being called on in class because ultimately they know that they are the only ones that know the answer. Nerds have a wide range of topics that they find interesting. For me, personally, it's space and computers. Both of these areas fascinate me more than anything else in the world. Usually, nerds tend to gravitate toward each other which means that usually a group assignment will be better than every other groups because they all have similar interests. He asserts the faults in American society's values in order to convince the readers of the New York Times to appreciate the intellectually curious instead of degrading them. Fridman integrates logos, ethos, and pathos to support his objective of persuading the readers of the New York Times to acknowledge the intellectuals rather than patronizing them. Friedman utilizes that for the readers of the New York Times to feel pity for the geeks that degrade their successes due to it being considered undeserving in order for them to appreciate the intellectual rather than reduce their value. Then he integrates sociological pathos from "How can a country where typical parents are ashamed of their daughter studying mathematics instead of going dancing... be expected to compete in the technology race with Japan or remain a leading political and cultural force in Europe" (P.9). Fridman identifies that the culture of America has parents portraying their children's academic achievements as an embarrassment since American society deduct the value of such act, while in other countries of the world, they view intellectual as a sign of future leaders governing the country. Adam did not have many friends and had an obsession with movies involving fantasy and science fiction. After receiving an ice cream bucket from Baskin Robbins and a refrigerator box from a random house in his neighborhood, he made himself a space helmet and ship. He claims that was how he became the geek that he is today. Later on in his life him and his father went to go see the movie Excalibur, and after seeing that he made knight armor just from materials that he had in his home. He then asked his father if he could help him make an actual knight armor costume for him to wear during Halloween. After several months of gathering materials and coming up with their own designs, Adam and his father were able to make the armor of his dreams. • 38. Japan's Pop Culture The author's main idea is that "The challenge to the industry in Japan is finding enough young people willing and able to create and export Japan's products of popular culture, while the challenger in America is creating an audience that will continue to consume those products as it ages." When he saw his friend tried to make her daughter stop crying with Totoro, he thought there is something. He also realized that many of his American friends have a copy of Miyzaki films in their living room after that. But two questions occurred. "Why Japan? And why now?" So he decided to take interviews to many people. He mentioned the word "Otaku." He said that the term embraced by Americans. Because of the success of computer and industries around it, people who were negatively called geeks or nerds got the status now. Still there is negative image of otaku, in the US media, the word often express pleasure. It started to appear in film title or convention name. • 39. Summary Of America Needs It Nerds "America Needs It Nerds" by Leonid Fridman talks about how the American society looks down on "geeks" or the intellectually curious and academically serious people. Fridman believes that if America continues to do this it will lead to a negative on how other countries look at us. Leonid Fridman made his argument using ethos, cause and effect, rhetorical questions, and pathos. In this passage Fridman started off in the second paragraph using ethos to develop his argument. He cites Webster's new World Dictionary definition of ageek, which is the word society uses to describe academically serious individuals. The definition given is a "street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens. This question can strike the American patriot readers or people that hold America in a high estate. Lastly, Leonid Fridman used Pathos to develop his argument. This whole passage gives the intellectual curious and academically serious people a voice. A reader who has dealt with being excluded from society and looked down on as a freak will now feel as though their voice will be heard. Fridman states how this issue is not only geared towards adults in paragraph 4 he explains how children as young in elementary school are being educated for who they are and their academic abilities.
