The People's Republic of China is today a communist state that was established on October 1, 1949 with Mao Zedong at its head. Effective political power rests with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). China's current president and general secretary of the CCP is Hu Jintao, and the prime minister is Wen Jiabao. The prime minister chairs the State Council (cabinet) while the president is the head of state. The highest organ of state power is the National People's Congress, although China's legislature follows the will of the ruling CCP.
