This document discusses strategies for increasing student readership in English courses based on surveys of students. It found that students are often unprepared because they are distracted outside of class and lack reading strategies. A survey showed that over half of students are motivated by accountability measures to read. Students were split on preferring digital links or PDFs for readings. The document provides handouts on reading strategies and minimizing distractions to help students read more and comprehend better. It advocates a metacognitive approach where students reflect on their reading to help them succeed in college and beyond.

Reading Preferences
Digital links to webpages vs. pdf version Students surveyed in Online English were split down the middle over their preference of hyperlinks to articles vs. pdf versions. Many cited a preference for color, graphics, variations in font as reasons for preferring webpages. Others cited these same factors as distractions and thus preferred pdf versions.
