My mum flew over 16 hours from Auckland to Kathmandu, Nepal to visit schools and hospitals built by Sir Edmund Hillary as the manager of the Hillary scholarship programme. She was able to see the mountain Hillary climbed, Mount Everest, and walk nearby tracks. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, where transportation is only by human, mule or yak as there are no roads or cars, and Kathmandu is the capital city with over 1.5 million people.

My Mum flew from Auckland to Hong Kong to

3. My mum has been working at the University of
Waikato for 15 years. She is the manager of the
Hillary scholarship programme. She earned the
opportunity to go to Nepal to follow the footsteps
of Sir Edmund Hillary and visit the schools and
hospitals he made.
She also got to walk the tracks
near the mountain he climbed, Mount Everest.

• The schools are different because they can speak
to languages, Nepali and English. They also have
to walk to school for some this might take over a
hour.
• Sir Edmund Hillary has built 27 schools, 2
hospitals 13 clinics.
• The food is mainly rice, potatoes and seasonal
vegetables.
• The lowest temperature was -12 degrees at
night, very cold, we had snow!
• The houses are warmed by a fire, they burn wood
or yak poo!
