Its capital city is Rome, in Lazio
region.
5. The Mediterranean diet forms the basis of Italian
cuisine, rich in pasta, fish, fruits and vegetables
and characterised by its extreme simplicity and
variety. Dishes and recipes are often derivatives
from local and familial tradition rather than
created by chefs. Ingredients and dishes vary
widely by region.
6. Desserts have a long tradition of merging local
flavours such as citrus fruits, pistachio and
almonds with sweet cheeses like mascarpone
and ricotta or exotic tastes as cocoa, vanilla and
cinnamon.
Gelato, tiramisù and cassata are among the most
famous examples of Italian desserts, cakes and
patisserie.

drivers in the world
FALSE
We could be the worst drivers in Europe, but
surely not in the world. We hear the driving in
China is pretty awful too.
16. Italians always eat spaghetti
with meatballs
FALSE
We do not eat spaghetti with meatballs. Maybe
with other types of pasta, but never with spaghetti
– This is probably because you have to cut
meatballs to eat them, and you can not risk cutting
the spaghetti, too.
18. Italians LOVE coffee
TRUE
We do actually love coffee, or at least the
majority of Italian people love coffee. But it’s
not true that ALL Italians love it.
22. Italians talk with their
hands
TRUE
Italians do actually use their hands when they
talk. A gesture is part of a concept, and even if
we try to not move our hands while talking, we
cannot resist.
24. Italian families are huge!
TRUE
Italian families are very large. Until the previous
generation it was common to have more than
6 children. Lunches and dinners with the entire
family are not rare in Italy: happy weekly
reunions with just ‘a few uncles’. More or less
40 people.
26. Italian people are
really friendly.
TRUE
We are generally quite a bit friendlier than
other cultures, but don’t assume every single
person will be lovely to you: we all have our
bad days.
28. Italians = Pizza, Pasta
and Mandolino
TRUE/FALSE
As you saw earlier, Italians do actually love
pizza and pasta but can someone explain
to me what exactly a mandolino is?
29. ITALIAN STEREOTYPESSo, as you can see, not all of the well-known
Italian stereotypes are true, and those that
actually are may not apply to every single
person. Most of them come from our love for
food, which, remember, is and always will be
true.
