What is an Indirect Speech?
7. DIRECT SPEECH
Saying exactly what someone has said is called direct
speech (sometimes called quoted speech)
Here what a person says appears within quotation marks
("...") and should be word for word.
For example:
Virat said, “I play cricket."
8. Indirect Speech
Indirect speech is also called
as reported speech because
it is used by a person to
report someone’s speech in
his/her own words.
For example:
Virat said that he played cricket.
9. How can we tell if words are direct
speech?
Let's take turns sharing some examples
of direct speech.
10. What should we look for in identifying
indirect speech?
Let's take turns sharing examples of
indirect speech.
15. In Direct Speech:
(1) The exact words of the speaker are put within inverted commas.
(2) The word of the Reported Speech begins with a Capital Letter.
(3) A comma is placed after the Reporting Verb to separate it from the second part of the
sentence.
In Indirect Speech:
(1) The reported words are not placed within inverted commas.
(2) No comma is placed after said.
(3) The Verb ‘is’ is changed into ‘was.’
(4) The word ‘that’ is added.
