2. While people don’t normally
think of the soundtracks,
scores, or music selections
when they think of
videogames, it is 1/3 of the art
form. We have put together a
list, in no particular order, of
the soundtracks that have
defined the gaming industry.
3. The Metal Gear Solid series is
exceptionally cinematic in
regards to its storylines and also
its scores. During moments of
danger, high pitched strings
punctuate the scene until peace
had been restored. We have
picked MGS2 as the standout
because of its James Bond style
theme song.
4. The Grand Theft Auto series,
known for its in-game radio-stations
in Vice City, flawlessly
encompassed the 80’s, and in San
Andreas, they represented the
hip-hop culture pitch perfectly.
But in Grand Theft Auto V, they
treated the players to a whopping
240 tracks across 17 radio
stations – perfectly building a
web of audio realism throughout
its vast locations.
5. Like the previous two selections, Halo is a series with consistently good music, but unlike
the other two, the original is making it to our list. With the right mix of percussion, strings,
and Gregorian chant, this soundtrack is downright stirring and is a great addition to Master
Chief’s many high-octane battles.
6. 2001 was a great year for
videogame music, but
none showcased how
beautiful, grim, and eerie
videogame music could be
quite like Silent Hill 2.
Filled with expertly
written ambient music –
touching on a wide variety
of genres, such as
alternative rock and trip-hop.
Every song
seamlessly accompanies
the players during their
night of terror.
7. Let’s go old school. The music of Tetris is based on Russian folk
music and is known by people who have never played the
Soviet block matching game. The music of Tetris may not be
the most beautiful or complex, but it may be the only
soundtrack on the list that could get stuck in your head for
years – that deserves recognition.
8. The Final Fantasy series may be the
most praised and well received
videogame music of all time. Nobuo
Uematsu has been the primary
composer since the beginning. These
soundtracks not only suit the games
ideally, but they have also
transcended the games themselves
and have gone on to sell hundreds of
thousands of copies, and have even
had concerts dedicated to them.
9. Last but not least… Super Mario Bros. It is one of the most
well known videogames of all time, if not the most well
known. The music of Super Mario Bros. is nothing more
than six simple songs that were composed on a tiny
keyboard by Koji Kondo. The main Mario theme is probably
the most iconic videogame song of all time.
