Traffic Congestion Problems In The San Francisco Bay
In "Not So Fast: A Study of Traffic Delays, Access, and Economic Activity in the San Francisco Bay Area", the 2016 report sponsored by the
California Department of Transportation, professor Brian Taylor, Taner Osman, Ph.D, and Trevor Thomas, Ph.D, from the University of California at
Los Angeles, and Andrew Mondschein, Ph.D, from the University of Virginia write about their research of thetraffic congestion problem in the San
Francisco Bay Area. The Bay Area is the third most congested area in the U.S. right after Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. Slow
–moving traffic not
only wastes time, but also wastes fuel that can amount to billions of dollars. Local residents are skeptical about new developments because they believe
that with more activity

The Hilltop Mall : A Mall Center
For our exhibition, City Planning, my group and I were assigned a specific aspect of the Hilltop Mall to change in order to regain its popularity. My
group, Services and Amenities, had to focus on adding elements that will the help people of the community, as well as those who come from other
parts of the Bay Area. We researched, analyzed, compared, brainstormed, and generated ideas as to how to make the Hilltop Mall better than it was
ever before, and after all those steps, I recommend that we provide better modes of transportation to help customers get around, and add a community
center.
The Hilltop Mall is a mall located in Richmond, the middle of the East San Francisco Bay Area. During the 70's, people would come from all over the

After that, we generated 5 questions for a survey we would ask the shoppers at the mall the next day. We asked about the ease and safety they felt at
the mall, since that was the topic my group had to focus on (Services and Amenities). Some questions were, "How would you rate your experience
walking in the parking lot at night, in terms of safety?", and "How would you rate the bathroom at the mall?" These questions allowed our participants
to rate on a scale of 1–5, so they have a range of options to express their opinions.
After all those steps, I learned things from our research on the Hilltop Mall's past. We learned that the mall was opened in 1976, went through 5
owners, and was foreclosed in 2013 (Fei, 2014). We also learned that only 16% of Hilltop District residents shopped there (Sciacca, 2016). This made
us wonder why the mall failed, when our Digital Media teacher. Ayesha Walker, expressed to us that during her childhood, it had been filled with
customers and was "the place to hang out" among teenagers.
From our trips, we we able to compare the Hilltop Mall's qualities, or the lack of, to Bay Street's. I found that while the Hilltop had a vast parking
area, they were cracked and faded so much that I was barely able to make out the parking lines. And Bay Street had street parking as well as garage
parking, which was great for not taking up as much

The Golden Gate Bridge Essay
The Golden Gate Bridge
Since the dawn of time, man has had an inherent need to get to the other side. Rivers, canyons, and impassable trails have always hindered the
migration of man, leaving him the choice to continue no further, or to "build a bridge and get over it." The earliest bridges were made of simple
materials such as stone, or even a fallen log. Regardless of the material, natural bridges allowed man to explore the "other side." However, man has
never been satisfied with what nature gives him. Over time, man developed the ability to construct his own bridges in order to create a shortcut across
an otherwise impassable obstacle. The first man–made bridges consisted of wooden beams or stone arches. With each ... Show more content on

The Golden Gate Bridge broke span records and set new safety standards in the bridge building community. Although architects and engineers
designed a safe structure, various improvements such as a lighter deck and reinforced steel trusses have been added over the years. The Golden Gate
Bridge, in all its glory, is a true structural wonder for both its size and artistic design.
Although actual construction began in January of 1933, the idea for the Golden Gate Bridge began back in 1872. At that time, railroad
entrepreneur Charles Crocker envisioned bridging the gap across the entrance to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The idea was deemed
unfeasible at the time and was put to rest until 1916, when James Wilkins, a newspaper editor, began to heavily promote the idea of building a
bridge across the Golden Gate Strait. This time the proposal caught the attention of various bridge engineers in the area. The initial response was that
the bridge would be difficult to build and cost in excess of 100 million dollars. Joseph Baermann Strauss stepped in with his proposal that, not only
could the bridge be built, but construction would cost less than thirty million dollars. He even believed that tolls would soon pay for the expenses. On
June 28, 1921 Strauss submitted his plan to build the Golden Gate Bridge for twenty seven million dollars. While the City of San Francisco needed the
bridge to accommodate the rapid population boom, it lacked the funds to

Golden Gate: A Career Essay
HISTORY Located at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, a three–mile–long strait connects the San Francisco Bay to the nearby Pacific
Ocean. This strait (named "Golden Gate" by U.S. Army Captain John Freemont in 1846) separates the cities of San Francisco and Marin. Due to its
location near the Pacific, the strait is known for its strong tidal forces; as well as gale–force winds and dense fogs. Because of these conditions, during
the early twentieth century, ferries provided the only feasible form of transportation between the two cities. Following the end of World War I, San
Francisco city engineer Michael O'Shaughnessy began challenging engineers to design and construct a bridge across the Golden Gate. Due the
location's geography, most claimed that such a project would cost no less than $100 million. Others claimed that construction would simply be
impossible. One engineer, however, was more optimistic. Born in 1870 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Joseph B. Strauss had always had an interest in bridges.
In 1892, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in engineering. Following his graduation, he began work as a draftsman for

Escape from Alcatraz
`On that night of June 1962 the Anglin brothers Clarence and John and, Frank Morris. It's pretty obvious that that the famous Alcatraz escapees
survived. There may be some persuasive arguments against that but, by looking through the evidence it seemed the fact that they survived out weighed
the fact they died. The prison they may have escaped from is a lone island on the San Francisco bay. Surrounded by the freezing cold water chances of
a swim escape was very slim the 50 degree water would kill in half an hour. The current would pull them out to the ocean where they would eventually
drown. Inside Alcatraz is a high security prison for the worst of the worst. With tool proof cell bars prisoners would spend years trying to cut through
the bars. Along with that the guards had machine guns and had continuous prisoner checks knowing if and when the prisoners tried ... Show more

and was extremely familiar on how to escape according to the scholastic scope. Many claim that the sharks ate them because their are supposedly

that is very unlikely based on the evidence I have found. They are most likely down in south america right now drinking out of coconuts while the

Analysis Of Da Nang 's ' Da '
The Da Nang Dragon Bridge has become a staple in Da Nang's existence and has put them on the map in a big way. The aesthetic appeal of the
bridge garners a lot of attention, but the bridge serves an important purpose other than just being visually appealing. This bridge connects to cities and
allows easy access to the regional city of Da Nang. While creating an ease of access to and from Da Nang, this bridge also has brought great economic
wealth to the city of Da Nang. It is a staple for tourists to visit as well as the surrounding inhabitants to admire this engineering marvel.

The width of the bridge is 35 meters and usually for bridges with widths this large the deck is supported by arches on the outside of each deck. Steel
suspender cables are used to connect the deck and arch in 8–meter intervals. Reinforced concrete is used underneath the deck as the arch structure and
this is also integrated into the pier. 10.5 meter cantilevers extend from the structures box girders which is how the superstructure is able to span 37.5
meters wide. The most unique aspect of the bridge is that there are no interlocking members, but instead utilizes a substance called neoprene. The full
dimensions of this bridge are six 3.75 meter wide lanes, two 2.5 meter wide sidewalks, 666 meters in total length, 37.5 meters in total width, and
gives a 12 m clearance form bridge to water. It is composed mainly of steel and concrete.

The History of Alcatraz Island Essay
The History of Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island has quite a distinct history. Many people know that Alcatraz served as a federal prison, but most are reluctant to know that this island
served as fort. Built before the Civil War, it served two main purposes. First, that it was to guard the San Francisco bay area from enemy ships against
a foreign invasion, and second, to hold hostage prisoners of war or POW's as they were called. In this report, I'll show you how this fortress came to
be a federal prison, why it is no longer in operation today, and most importantly, to show why it was built in the first place. When the great "Gold Rush"
of 1849 first started, California grew from what would be considered a small, unpopulated state, into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the early 1860's, Alcatraz had 111 cannons. Some were enormous, firing a fifteen–inch ball weighing over 450 pounds. Defenses included a row of
brick enclosed gun positions called case mates to protect the dock; a fortified gateway or a Sally Port to block the entrance road; and a three–story
citadel on top of the island. This served both as an armed barracks and as a last line defense strategy. Even though Alcatraz was built to withstand a
foreign invasion, its most important use was during the Civil War, 1861– 1865. Seeing as it was the only completed fort in the entire bay, it was vital in
the protecting from Confederate Raiders. Early in the war, ten thousand rifles were moved to Alcatraz from the State armory, to prevent them from
being used by southern sympathizers. The crew of a Confederate privateer were among the first inmates to be held within "The Rock." Alcatraz's
notoriety as a penitentiary overshadows its earlier, and longer use by the Army. Surprisingly, this small island once was the most powerful fort west
of the Mississippi River. There was some limited modernization of the island's defenses after the Civil War. Rifled cannons were mounted. In 1854
some 450 electrically controlled underwater mines were brought to the island to protect the Bay. However, as the ships of potential enemies became
more and more powerful, the defenses were increasing! ly obsolete. In 1907 Alcatraz officially ceased being a fortress and became Pacific

Alcatraz as a Tourist Attraction Essay
It's 1934, prohibition is the law, and organized crime is booming. You've been convicted of tax evasion and have spent the last couple years at the
Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary. With several thousand dollars stuffed in the hollow handle of your tennis racket, and a warden in your pocket, you've been
living life like a king. But all that's about to come to and end, you find yourself standing on Pier 41, Fisherman's Warf, San Francisco bay. It's early
morning and the fog obscures your view. As it starts to lift and recede into the ocean, it takes along with it all forms of courage and hope that still
remain within you. All that's left is the view before you, twenty–two acres of solid granite surrounded by a fast moving sea of icy waters. ... Show more

The weather on the island is cold and windy most to the time, and, with exception to the other tourist, the feeling you get while there is one of
bitterness and despair. So how has this island managed to survive this long? It has survived through the interest of the people that do not inhabit it. It
has survived because of tourism.
So how has Alcatraz transformed from one of the most feared prisons of its time, to one of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions? I feel this
question demands an answer because no other prison in U.S. history has ever been so popular for so many different reasons. It started as a U.S. Army
fort, then became a high security prison, was then the inspiration to the Indian Movement, and ended its career to this day as a popular tourist
attraction. I feel that the fears and stories that have escaped from the island during the time it was a federal prison, have heightened people's curiosity
about what it was like to be a prisoner of "The Rock." Each day more and more people venture to Pier 41, they buy their ticket aboard the Old Blue,
and start their adventure to the island of the unknown. "Experience the infamous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary" (Blue & Gold Fleet, 2001). This is one

Because of the passing of the Volstead Act in 1920, production and distribution of alcohol became an extremely profitable business. With this also
came a noticeable rise in organized crime in many of the big cities. Even worse, the crimes committed by members of these gangs became more
violent. Soon prisons were overcrowded and were merely hold facilities.
No correction was in mind for these prisoners. Convicts filled the empty hours with talk, mostly about the crimes they had committed and ways
they could beat the law. Drug addicts and other petty offenders were mixed with killers and robbers. Young felons, who had taken to crime for no
more than sheer pleasure or pride on a dare, came out of prison with no job skills but with plenty of advice from more experienced criminals. In
1933, J. Edgar Hoover was made the director of the recently established FBI agency.
Hoover had plans to crack down on these criminals. The problem Hoover faced was that, no sooner were the criminals locked up than the crime
organizations would bust them out. With this major problem in mind, the Justice Department began looking into a maximum–security prison that was
not easy to access and therefore inescapable. When they came across Alcatraz, it was almost too good to be true. By April of 1934, work began on
Alcatraz to make the current cell house more secure by replacing soft iron square bars on the cells with new,

Bay Model Anthropology
I am proposing to conduct my self–guided field trip at the San Francisco Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito. The Bay Model is a 1.5 acre, indoor,
three–dimensional hydraulic tidal simulation model covering the entire San Francisco Bay Estuary including the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers
Delta. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) created the model in 1957 to study estuary circulation and flow, geometry, and the
impact of anthropology. USACE was able to survey potential anthropogenic hazards and the way they would change the landscape of the estuary on
an accelerated timeframe. While USACE ceased its research efforts using the model in 2000, the model is still open to the public for educational
purposes. The model features numerous points of interest for visitors including a 12–minute introductory video, the "Mountains to the Sea" and

view the model to help me speculate on the possibility of harnessing the tidal energy currents of the estuary as a source of power. I am a Geography

Inequality In The Golden City
Social Inequality of the Golden City The Golden Gate Bridge takes a curious traveler across the San Francisco Bay area into a marvelous journey
towards a technologically innovative city of San Francisco. The city of San Francisco has forever been a national symbol of coveted opportunity,
cultural disapprobation, technological blossoming – and, frankly, economic inequality. In the past, countless attempts were made by multiple scholars
to identify the sources of San Francisco's social inequality. Statisticians compiled large tomes of data, while Sociologists wrote unending arrays of
books; all in efforts to understand the basis of social inequality in the Golden City. For those reasons, this essay will not explore the sources of San
Francisco's inequality. On the contrary, this essay will answer a fundamental question of why the social inequality in San Francisco is becoming more
profound and refuses to cease. Hence, answering this question can only be done by partitioning the image of social inequality into several distinct
branches; historical nuances of San Francisco, political values in San Francisco, and economic origin within San Francisco. Surprisingly, all three
branches diverge in context, but their individual analysis releases import artifacts describing how the greatest city of the South continues to divide its
citizens economically. Historically, the San Francisco area was inhabited by humans for more than ten thousand years. Those early

The Most Famous Prison Of The United States
Alcatraz was one of the most famous prison in the Unites States, located in the Californian San Francisco Bay. The prison was renowned for being

mile away from shore, surrounded by the supposedly shark infested, strong currents, ice cold water of the bay. Today, theprison is only used as a tourist

In Alcatraz, most Alcatraz guards and their families lived on the island. The wives, children, and any other family members of the guards who
lived on the island would take a ferry or boat to the port of San Francisco when they needed to go to school, work, or just to go into town. Guests of
children and other residents were allowed to visit the families of the island, but with inmates, they were only allowed one visit per month, each visit
had to be approved directly by the warden of Alcatraz. In this visit, physical contact between the inmate and visitor was prohibited, as well as any
discussion of current events. The conversations were held via an intercom system, and an officer would usually be monitoring the conversation,
though, sometimes the officer would fail on this task. If there was any sort of inappropriate act or breaking of rules during these visits, the inmate
would lose the privilege of monthly visits, or possibly be put under some other form of punishment.

The California Clapper Rail and Its Preservation
California Clapper Rail (A) Description and Ecology The California Clapper Rail, Rallus longirostris obsoletus, is a northern California bird that
typically resides in the San Francisco Bay Estuary, and can be seen as south as San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. The clapper rail is part of the order
Gruiformes and the family Rallidae. It is one of the largest birds in the Rallidae family, measuring 32–47 cm bill to tail typically. Males on average
weigh 300–350g and females weigh in at 248–301g. Clapper rails have the physical appearance of a hen, however with a long, orange bill, that is not
a feature of a hen. They typically have black and white sides and white feathers under the tail. The difference between an adolescent and an adult is
that the young have a paler bill, a gray body, and black sides. California clapper rails are very similar to Virginia clapper rails, but the California rail
is slightly larger. Rails are known for being very secretive, which makes spotting them in the wild very difficult. They are very sensitive to
disturbances in the wild, and if they sense something, they typically either freeze, hide or run to avoid the disturbance. Rails are also known to be
able to swim if necessary to escape a predator. The calls of clapper rails are all variations of the same note, and factors of the call include population
size, time of day, tides, and weather. The clapper is the most common call by the clapper rail itself. Clapper rails are best

Estuaries : San Francisco Bay
As you may know, a estuary, particularly is a enclosed body of water aside the coast where freshwater from rivers and streams intertwine with the
salt water from the ocean. As a matter of fact, estuaries are "places of transition from land to sea and freshwater to salt water." An estuary is a
partially enclosed body of water formed where freshwater from rivers and streams flows into the ocean, mixing with the salty sea water. Estuaries
and the lands surrounding them are places of transition from land to sea, and from fresh to salt water. Influenced by the tides, estuaries are protected
and kept safe from the "full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by the reefs, barrier islands, or fingers of land, mud, or sand that define an estuary

In areas where the mouth of fresh water rivers run into the estuary, the salinity can be as low as .5 ppt (parts per thousand), and in this region
freshwater organisms can live. Near the mouth of the bay, the salinity level can be as high as 36 ppt, which is as salty as the ocean. Since this estuary
is located in a temperate zone, the average daily temperature of the water changes with the seasons. More than 350 species of fish live in the
Chesapeake bay, this bay provides rich fishing opportunities for fisherman. This Bay supports more than 3,600 species of plant and animal life
altogether. Now picture, how much this number drastically increases if you include the enitre worlds plant and animal life.
Furthermore, estuaries are generally influenced by the tides, yet still remain protected from the powerful ocean waves, winds, and storms that the land
forms as barrier islands or peninsulas. In fact, one of the most productive on earth are estuarian environments that create more organic matter each
year than comparable areas of forest, grassland, or agricultural land. The tidal waters of estuaries also support unique communities of plants and
animals especially adapted for life at the margin of the sea. A numerous of different habitat spieces are found living in estuaries, including rocky
shores, sandy beachs, oyster reefs, shallow open waters, freshwater and salt marshes, swamps, mud and sand flats, seagrasses, tidal pools, mangrove
forests, and even river deltas.

Global Warming and The San Francisco Bay
Do you think the San Francisco Bay would not be affected by climate change of global warming? The short answer is no. Scientists believe that in
the future that the sea level of the San Francisco Bay will rise and flood several of the San Francisco Bay Area's populated areas and landmarks such
as the San Francisco and Oakland International Airport. How could we prevent or slow down the bay from taking over our landmarks and populated
areas? Around 10,000 years ago the San Francisco Bay was once not a bay. The glaciers from the ice age melted into water and then the water flowed
into "canyons" to form into the San Francisco Bay. However the flowing of the bay may not have stopped. The San Francisco Bay Conservation
and Development Commission predicts that the sea level will increase so much the sea will take over and flood populated areas and landmarks like
the San Francisco and the Oakland International Airports. We could recover from natural disasters like earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes, but
not sea level rising. The New York Daily News say that it would take only 12 feet for the ocean to rise and take over several landmarks and populated
areas in the San Francisco Bay Area and another landmark could be San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park. My project is to solve San Francisco Bay's
rising sea level problems by slowing it down and have little consequences to the ocean environment as possible. The project has three objectives that
could solve San Francisco Bay's sea

Driving Across The Golden Gate Bridge
Driving across the golden gate bridge is a sight to see. Well it is a site o see if you can see through the layers of thick fog and if your car sat up
high enough you could see out over the bridge. The air was not freezing, but there was a chill in the breeze that gave me goose bumps. Driving
down crooked roads, and eating the sourdough bread instead of the soup inside it are special memories. It was a few days in San Francisco last
summer that gave me a love for somewhere other than home. Being the middle child, my parents have always taken the older sibling on trips and
so when the opportunity came around for a trip. The time was 11:00 am. The date was June 3rd, and the destination was San Francisco. When we
arrived at the airport and were waiting to get on the plane the time flew by; 3 hours felt like 30 minutes. I waited anxiously for the plane to take off
and when it did, my stomach turned upside down. I knew there was no turning back now. We landed at the San Francisco airport, and my parents
told me we got a rental car, and I got to pick it out. I chose a slick, deep red Chrysler; the idea of that car gave me a spring in my step. The first item
for sightseeing was Alcatraz. It thrilled me. I had just spent three trimesters In AP History, and then I got to visit one of those historical places I had
learned about. We had To ride a ferry to Alcatraz, but when we go off the ferry the vivid image of history was around me. Inside the basement of

San Francisco Bay And The Francisco Estuary
The San Francisco Bay was stumbled upon by Spanish soldiers in 1769. Upon the time of its discovery, the Bay and the San Francisco Estuary
traversed 500 square miles consisting of open water as well as another 850 square miles of fresh and salt water marsh. There was beautiful scenery
along with the existence of various species in the beginning of its discovery. Various types of species included sea otters, whales, large salmon,
mussels and oysters, large flocks of geese and duck, as well as shorebirds.
The San Francisco Bay, including the Delta, configures the largest estuary on the West Coast. The San Francisco Estuary Project was created to aid in
restoring the beautiful wetland habitat and in turn will also help in conserving the biodiversity of plants and animals. Restoring the loss of wetlands
since the Gold Rush is one of the primary goals of the San Francisco Estuary Partnership Projects. The San Francisco Estuary transports water from the
Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River that is then transferred into the Pacific Ocean.
Description of the San Francisco Estuary Projects
The San Francisco Estuary Partnership has diligently worked with state and federal agencies for over 20 years with goals of enhancing the fitness and
health of the estuary. Restoring the loss of wetlands since the Gold Rush is one of the primary goals of the San Francisco Estuary Partnership Projects.

Patterns from the Food-Shed Map Essay
Collecting data for the food–shed map was an interesting experience because I noticed several patterns in my map. These patterns also helped me
realize a few things about the production of my food. I realized that the zip code on the box was not usually an accurate representation of where my
food came from the distance it traveled. Before I began collecting zip codes of where some of my food came from I expected most of the food to be
from all over the country. However, I was surprised when a lot of my food came from mainly the East Coast (New York and New Jersey) as well as the
West Coast (California). When the zip codes were shown on a map, I noticed that almost none of my food came from the Midwest or the surrounding
areas. This was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I realized that the address on the package does not necessarily indicate where my food actually came from unless it was a fruit or vegetable.
Processed foods might be made in a certain factory but the ingredients used to make Oreos or Kraft Mac and Cheese are not listed on the box. The
zip codes on the boxes indicated how far the factory or company headquarters were located but not were the actual raw materials for the food came

from my marinara sauce did not necessarily grow in the area where the sauce was produced. The ingredients for the products are grown in different

Federal Prison Alcatraz
Alcatraz is located off the shore of the San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz was a federal prison from 1934–1963. This federal prison house some of the most
dangerous and difficult felons in it's years of operation. Before Alcatraz was a federal prison it was used as a military prison. Many believed this was
the perfect place to have a prison due to the fact that no inmater would be able to successfully escape by swimming, because of the cold, rigid, shark
infested waters. In 1963 the prison shut down due to the operating expenses.
In 1775 a spanish explorer who name was Juan Manuel de Ayala mapped and named the now very well known island. He names the island La Isla de
los Alcatraces, meaning the island of pelicans. Years later the Island was used for a military prison. Cannons were added to the island to protect the
bay. By the 1850's the U.S. Army began holding military prisoners on the island. The inmates included confederate supporters and people accused of

A Short Note On Severe Water Pollution On The San...
Kicker: Severe water pollution that exists in far away countries, could happen right here in the San Francisco bay– and its effects would be devastating.
Recall the last time you drove across the Golden Gate Bridge; looking to the sea and seeing the whitecaps break against the rocks, and then looking
at the bay and seeing the shimmering aqua colored water filled with sailboats. But now, try and imagine a very different picture, you look towards the
bay and see oil slicks, floating tires, and islands of trash as the smell of rotting fish, gasoline and sewage fill your nose. This may sound strange and
fictional, but the truth is it isn't far from possible. In fact, some of the these pollutants are flowing into the San Francisco bay already. Imagine living
next to a place like this, how would that make you feel? More importantly, what are the physical health effects as a result of these pollutants? In the
following article, we will explore how something like this is possible (if not probable), and what effects it could have on the health of the Bay Area.
Firstly, we jump to a place far away from San Fransisco, about 7 thousand miles away to be exact– Brazil; a country suffering from a variety of
problems, including a devastating drought, and massive amounts of water pollution. The bay of Rio de Janeiro (Guanabara Bay), was once a
recreational gem that was swam through, canoed, and enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. More importantly, its rich, diversified ecosystem,

San Francisco Social Inequality Essay
Social Inequality of the Golden City The Golden Gate Bridge takes a curious traveler across the San Francisco Bay area into a marvelous journey

Upon the discovery of gold in California, thousands of fortune–dwellers migrated to San Francisco. In fact, the population of San Francisco increased
from 450 in 1848 to a colossal size of 25,000 by the end of 1949 (SFgenealogy 2017). Incidentally, multiple gold mining towns were erected across
San Francisco. The new towns grew often in the form of businesses, food courts, and even entertainment facilities. Paradoxically, this historical nuance
introduced the division of people by class. Division of class in San Francisco, meant that individuals who initiated first business facilities were now
becoming wealthier by exploiting their lower–class counterparts. A tempting question arises, who were those lower–class counterparts? A demographic
report of 1853 provides nothing unusual about the San Francisco's population: 98.3% of the population were white leaving the remaining 1.7% to
African–Americans, Indians, etc. (SFgenealogy 2017). However, a statistical report by the Secretary of State to the California Legislature, sheds light

But here in this coastal landscape I witnessed something that brought me to question the domination of the apex predator. Rounding the path where
the hills turn to marsh, a flock of birds swarmed inflight before me. Watching, their movements seemed frantic. Diving and rising. Sporadically flying
this way or that. Some coming so close, that it felt as if I could reach out and touch them midflight. And yet as they flew over my head I realized their
motions weren't without form. They flew in unison. Guided by instinct or habit or experience. The reason: predation. The flock of thrushes were
harassing a lone raptor. Probably because it ventured too near to their nest. The birds kept toe–to–toe with the predator's dives and changes in direction.
This seemingly defenseless prey was shepherding this hunter. Working as group for their full survival. I watched them until they flew are beyond

2.BACKGROUND The San Francisco bay was one of the best natural harbours in the world and it was also the gateway to the Pacific Ocean.
(Loomis, 1958) This fact meant that its bay would become a leading trade centre. A rush of people were attracted to San Francisco because of its
port, the natural beauty and the gold rush, where thousands of people were brought in by ship. This lead to a shortage in water in all areas and
transportation services had to be improved to provide enough water to all places. A ferry service was started that crossed the river from San
Francisco to Sacramento to carry heavy equipment and people to the gold fields in the time of the gold rush and just thereafter. As the population grew

What Is Alcatraz Prison
Alcatraz Penitentiary harbored some of this country's worst criminals from 1934 until its closing in 1963. This prison was located on Alcatraz
Island, which was in the San Francisco Bay. It was housed on this island so the prisoners would not be tempted to escape. This prison was shut down
because of the high costs to keep it running. Although many prisoners attempted to escape, the prison claimed that all of them failed at it. Alcatraz
was set apart and on an island, it was greatly guarded because it once was a fort, and the inmates were only allowed outside for one hour each day.

Two brothers, and a fellow inmate disappeared and were never found. The prison reported that they drowned in their attempt to cross the bay, but
there has never been any evidence to prove this theory. This attempt was in June of 1962, just a nine months before the prison closed its doors. These
prisoners escaped by crawling through a hole they dug in the walls of the prison, and climbed up onto the roof. They used paper–mache look alike
heads and placed them in their bunks to buy them time to escape. Supposedly, the men made a makeshift raft and paddles to cross the bay. Since then
the three men haven't been found. Altogether, Alcatraz Penitentiary was a pretty tough prison to escape, and maybe that is why the government placed
the worse criminals there. Out of thirty–six men who attempted to escape, only three went without being captured. Over fifty years after its closing,
Alcatraz is still the most infamous prison of this country. This prison is so popular that it receives over 1.3 million visitors each year, and it's one of
San Francisco's biggest tourist attractions. While this prison is said to be inescapable that's mostly to do with the government trying to keep its
reputation up. Being that the prison open for nearly thirty years and only three prisoners were said to escape, it could be considered

young children who lived on the island. Flowers and shrubs were imported to help beautify the rocky island. Many inmates, because of this, were
allowed their own private gardens. In the 1920's prisoners were allowed to build a baseball field on which different inmate teams played in their own
uniforms. On Friday nights hundreds of people would come from the mainland to see the exciting "Alcatraz Fights" which pitted two inmates against
each other in a boxing–type match.
With the rise of organized crime in the 1930's Alcatraz went through some dramatic changes. The deteriorating cell house was refurbished with
electronically controlled cell doors, metal detectors, gun galleries which allowed guards an elevated view of the entire cell house, permanently
mounted tear gas canisters in the ceiling of the dining hall, and tool proof bars. New cells nicked named "Strip" cells and "The Hole" were built to
house those inmates who required complete isolation. A strict silence rule was instituted and those who violated it could be put in isolation for up to
eight days. The once merry days of baseball games and gardening were over.
In 1963, due to the exorbent cost of running an island prison, Alcatraz was officially closed. Arguments quickly arose over what to do with the eyesore
that the prison had become.

Cost Center Definition
Unlike a profit center, a cost center is not operated with the intention of earning revenue or making a profit directly. Instead, it is a part of a business
that generates costs without making money. A cost center only enables profit centers to generate revenue. For example, in a small retail business, each
store, or each class of products, may operate as a profit center, while the customer service and human resources divisions operate as cost centers.
A cost centre is a department within a company that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company. However, all cost
centres perform an important job. It improves the satisfaction of customers and indirectly increases sales.[1] The manager and employees of cost
centre are not accountable for its profit and investment decision but they are responsible for its cost.[2] They are liable for keeping their cost in line
or below budget because cost centre does not produce directly from its activities.[3] The performance of the managers is assessed by comparing the
actual expenses incurred with the budgeted expenses for the cost centre. Basically cost is the control data in the cost centre. [

Some people who have made it out of the prison have tried to swim in the bay, but since they were accustomed to warm waters they either died of
hypothermia or drowned. If a prisoner was found escaping, they usually were put in the hole, which is a cell that has a solid door to block off all
light. The cells in the hole have no bed, no blankets, no AC which made it cold. Prisoners were not allowed to wear clothes except for boxer shorts.
A day in the life of a prisoner at Alcatraz is pretty tough. At 6:30 AM the prisoners woke up and tidied up their cells. At 6:45 they went to the mess
hall to eat breakfast. Then around 7:25 guards took the inmates to their "jobs" such as, gardening, tailoring, and laundry. They worked until 11:40
which is when the inmates had dinner, the same way as breakfast. After dinner they went back to work and had a break after two hours, then they
returned to their cells at 4:45. The final lockup was at 4:50 and lights out at 9:30. A total of 13 official counts was made every 24 hours to make

Soon after the pier (surrounded by a caisson) was placed in the water, a storm caused the nearby water to churn. This water raised the caisson and
continuously beat it into the fender. After removing the pier, workers reinforced the fender with concrete; thus making the fender a part of the final
foundation. The pier was completed in January 1935; followed five months by the tower. Two months after completing the towers, it was time to begin
constructing the cables. Two main cables would stretch from one anchorage to the other: passing over both of the towers. Using technology from the
company John A. Roebling's Sons, workers spun over 25,000 pencil–thin wires into 7,650–foot–long, 36.5–inch–wide cables. With the advanced
technology, workers were able to complete the construction in less than seven months. In September 1936, workers completed the roadway steel.
Eight months later, workers complete and secure the road deck. This was achieved through the use of 254 sets of suspender ropes, which were spaced
fifty feet apart and extended to the main cables. These ropes help to secure and support the weight of the new road.

The Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse
The salt marsh harvest mouse is listed as an endangered species in 1970s. Its phylogeny is of the Kingdom Animalia, the Phylum Chordata, the Class
Mammalia, the Order Rodentia, the Family Cricetidae, the Genus Reithrodontomys, and the Species raviventris. The closest living relative of the salt
marsh harvest mouse, according to genetic mapping, is the plains harvest mouse, R. montanus, a western interior species that are found in Mexico and
central US. Within the species of R. raviventris there are the northern subspecies, R. r. halicoetes, and southern subspecies, R. r. raviventris both of
which reside in Northern California around the Bay area. The northern subspecies can be found in the San Pablo and Suisun marshes of California,
whereas the southern variant reside in the marshes of Corte Madera, Richmond and South San Francisco Bay. Salt marsh harvest mice heavily depend
on dense coverage of the pickleweed (Salicornia virginica)––their preferred habitat. In marshes with salt–tolerant plants, the mice escape the higher
tides in winter through the use of said vegetation and sometimes reside in the plants for a good amount of their lives. Mice also migrate to
neighboring grasslands as another way of escape during high winter tides. The mice are presumed to sustain themselves on plant leaves, seeds and
stems. In winter, they seem to prefer fresh green grasses. As for the other three seasons, they tend to favor pickleweed and saltgrass. The northern
subspecies of the

Descriptive Essay About Friends
I was a sophomore in High School, Ellen was a freshman and by the beginning of the calendar year, we were wildly popular, it seemed as if every
freshman and sophomore on campus knew who we were. We often dressed alike, something we retained from when we were children and our mother
clothed us in the same outfits, we teased our hair up in bouffant styles, wore heaps of mascara, and eyeliner artistically drawing little wings in the
corner of our eyes. My sister and I were part of the in–crowd and fashionably trendy.
Our circle of friends was a diverse group of classmates; Ellen had her freshman friends and I had my sophomore friends, however, our closest,
bosom–buddy friends, were three long–haired individuals named Allen, Adrian and Glenn. For some reason, we enjoyed their company and spent
most of our time with these lost souls. All our classmates knew that the five of us were best friends. At lunch, we met at the school entrance, walked
to the Diner at Walgreens together, ordered whatever the five of us combined, could afford; a few servings of French Fries; two or three hamburgers,
a couple of sodas which we shared among us, as we whiled away the lunch hour, solving the teenage problems of the world. I will never, ever, in a
million years forget my sixteenth birthday when Ellen, Allen, Adrian and Glenn arranged to have a professional photo taken as a surprise gift for me.

Abstract: There is very little known about the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse (SMHM). In 1970, SMHM was added to the endangered list, largely due to
the fact their salt water habitats 84% gone. With the mouse being just under 3 inches in length, nocturnal, loving its dense cover protection, and the
close resemblance to the Western Harvest Mouse, it makes field identification very difficult. Further research is needed not only into the population
numbers of SMHM, but its habitat as well. Capture–recapture will be used to assess the SMHM population, where it will be measured, weighed, a
patch of hair taken for re–identification, and released back into its habitat. Subplots will also be measured for the Pickleweed population using USFS
protocol. Despite conservation efforts, there is a lot more that needs to be done to evaluate SMHM and its habitat to ensure its continued survival. The
objective of this research proposal is to measure the SMHM population and its habitat, in order to evaluate the probability of its continued survival.
The results of this research will be forwarded to the appropriate agency for further conservation efforts of SMHM in the San Francisco Bay.

summarize this ecosystem: It's the largest bay and estuary on the Pacific coast and has been damaged by industrial activity, starting in 1850 with the
Gold Rush and quickly followed by the logging, railroad and salt pond industries. Its biggest threats are pollution, water diversion and filling–in.
Conservation efforts began in 1965 and today the SFBay is collectively overseen by government and private organizations. Two environmental
problems the SFBay faces are mercury contamination and overfishing. The Clean Water Act lists the SFBay as impaired for mercury. Estimates
suggest the bay's sediment is contaminated with about two hundred metric tons of mercury, much going back to original Gold Rush. This pollutant
has affected SFBay biota resulting in a state issued fish advisory waning not to eat some common fish such as Striped bass and limited intake of
other species (OEHHA, 2011; Ely & Viani, 2010). At the same time humanity was busy cutting down thousand year old redwood trees and
hydraulically destroying the Sierra Mountains, they were also busy pillaging the SFBay for fish, shellfish and perhaps the unlucky whale pod that
happened by. Some species were immediately depleted and by

Traffic Congestion Problems In The San Francisco Bay

  • 1. Traffic Congestion Problems In The San Francisco Bay In "Not So Fast: A Study of Traffic Delays, Access, and Economic Activity in the San Francisco Bay Area", the 2016 report sponsored by the California Department of Transportation, professor Brian Taylor, Taner Osman, Ph.D, and Trevor Thomas, Ph.D, from the University of California at Los Angeles, and Andrew Mondschein, Ph.D, from the University of Virginia write about their research of thetraffic congestion problem in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Bay Area is the third most congested area in the U.S. right after Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. Slow –moving traffic not only wastes time, but also wastes fuel that can amount to billions of dollars. Local residents are skeptical about new developments because they believe that with more activity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Hilltop Mall : A Mall Center For our exhibition, City Planning, my group and I were assigned a specific aspect of the Hilltop Mall to change in order to regain its popularity. My group, Services and Amenities, had to focus on adding elements that will the help people of the community, as well as those who come from other parts of the Bay Area. We researched, analyzed, compared, brainstormed, and generated ideas as to how to make the Hilltop Mall better than it was ever before, and after all those steps, I recommend that we provide better modes of transportation to help customers get around, and add a community center. The Hilltop Mall is a mall located in Richmond, the middle of the East San Francisco Bay Area. During the 70's, people would come from all over the Bay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After that, we generated 5 questions for a survey we would ask the shoppers at the mall the next day. We asked about the ease and safety they felt at the mall, since that was the topic my group had to focus on (Services and Amenities). Some questions were, "How would you rate your experience walking in the parking lot at night, in terms of safety?", and "How would you rate the bathroom at the mall?" These questions allowed our participants to rate on a scale of 1–5, so they have a range of options to express their opinions. After all those steps, I learned things from our research on the Hilltop Mall's past. We learned that the mall was opened in 1976, went through 5 owners, and was foreclosed in 2013 (Fei, 2014). We also learned that only 16% of Hilltop District residents shopped there (Sciacca, 2016). This made us wonder why the mall failed, when our Digital Media teacher. Ayesha Walker, expressed to us that during her childhood, it had been filled with customers and was "the place to hang out" among teenagers. From our trips, we we able to compare the Hilltop Mall's qualities, or the lack of, to Bay Street's. I found that while the Hilltop had a vast parking area, they were cracked and faded so much that I was barely able to make out the parking lines. And Bay Street had street parking as well as garage parking, which was great for not taking up as much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Golden Gate Bridge Essay The Golden Gate Bridge Since the dawn of time, man has had an inherent need to get to the other side. Rivers, canyons, and impassable trails have always hindered the migration of man, leaving him the choice to continue no further, or to "build a bridge and get over it." The earliest bridges were made of simple materials such as stone, or even a fallen log. Regardless of the material, natural bridges allowed man to explore the "other side." However, man has never been satisfied with what nature gives him. Over time, man developed the ability to construct his own bridges in order to create a shortcut across an otherwise impassable obstacle. The first man–made bridges consisted of wooden beams or stone arches. With each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Golden Gate Bridge broke span records and set new safety standards in the bridge building community. Although architects and engineers designed a safe structure, various improvements such as a lighter deck and reinforced steel trusses have been added over the years. The Golden Gate Bridge, in all its glory, is a true structural wonder for both its size and artistic design. Although actual construction began in January of 1933, the idea for the Golden Gate Bridge began back in 1872. At that time, railroad entrepreneur Charles Crocker envisioned bridging the gap across the entrance to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The idea was deemed unfeasible at the time and was put to rest until 1916, when James Wilkins, a newspaper editor, began to heavily promote the idea of building a bridge across the Golden Gate Strait. This time the proposal caught the attention of various bridge engineers in the area. The initial response was that the bridge would be difficult to build and cost in excess of 100 million dollars. Joseph Baermann Strauss stepped in with his proposal that, not only could the bridge be built, but construction would cost less than thirty million dollars. He even believed that tolls would soon pay for the expenses. On June 28, 1921 Strauss submitted his plan to build the Golden Gate Bridge for twenty seven million dollars. While the City of San Francisco needed the bridge to accommodate the rapid population boom, it lacked the funds to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Golden Gate: A Career Essay HISTORY Located at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, a three–mile–long strait connects the San Francisco Bay to the nearby Pacific Ocean. This strait (named "Golden Gate" by U.S. Army Captain John Freemont in 1846) separates the cities of San Francisco and Marin. Due to its location near the Pacific, the strait is known for its strong tidal forces; as well as gale–force winds and dense fogs. Because of these conditions, during the early twentieth century, ferries provided the only feasible form of transportation between the two cities. Following the end of World War I, San Francisco city engineer Michael O'Shaughnessy began challenging engineers to design and construct a bridge across the Golden Gate. Due the location's geography, most claimed that such a project would cost no less than $100 million. Others claimed that construction would simply be impossible. One engineer, however, was more optimistic. Born in 1870 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Joseph B. Strauss had always had an interest in bridges. In 1892, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in engineering. Following his graduation, he began work as a draftsman for the New Jersey Steel and Iron Company, as well as the Lassig Bridge and Iron Works Company in Chicago. Seven years later, while... However, the design was met with much opposition; as many believed it to be an eyesore and felt that it would take away the natural beauty of the landscape. Eight years later, Strauss enlisted the help of engineers Othmar Ammann, Charles Derleth Jr., and Leon Moiuserff to redesign the bridge. By increasing the length of the suspension span to 4,000 feet, the engineers would be able to eliminate the need for a hybrid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It's pretty obvious that that the famous Alcatraz escapees survived. There may be some persuasive arguments against that but, by looking through the evidence it seemed the fact that they survived out weighed the fact they died. The prison they may have escaped from is a lone island on the San Francisco bay. Surrounded by the freezing cold water chances of a swim escape was very slim the 50 degree water would kill in half an hour. The current would pull them out to the ocean where they would eventually drown. Inside Alcatraz is a high security prison for the worst of the worst. With tool proof cell bars prisoners would spend years trying to cut through the bars. Then turn its lights back on once it was far away from alcatraz. could this have helped them escape? Statistically that doesn't just happen randomly that night. Frank morris was an armed bank robber and was extremely familiar on how to escape according to the scholastic scope. Many claim that the sharks ate them because their are supposedly sharks in san francisco bay. There happen to be sharks in the san francisco bay. Now those of you who live in san francisco don't jump out of your pants they're only little bottom feeder sharks they only are about as big as your fingers. It would seem that there be a chance the could have died but that is very unlikely based on the evidence I have found. Many people know that Alcatraz served as a federal prison, but most are reluctant to know that this island served as fort. Built before the Civil War, it served two main purposes. First, that it was to guard the San Francisco bay area from enemy ships against a foreign invasion, and second, to hold hostage prisoners of war or POW's as they were called. In this report, I'll show you how this fortress came to be a federal prison, why it is no longer in operation today, and most importantly, to show why it was built in the first place. When the great "Gold Rush" of 1849 first started, California grew from what would be considered a small, unpopulated state, into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the early 1860's, Alcatraz had 111 cannons. Some were enormous, firing a fifteen–inch ball weighing over 450 pounds. Defenses included a row of brick enclosed gun positions called case mates to protect the dock; a fortified gateway or a Sally Port to block the entrance road; and a three–story citadel on top of the island. This served both as an armed barracks and as a last line defense strategy. Even though Alcatraz was built to withstand a foreign invasion, its most important use was during the Civil War, 1861– 1865. Seeing as it was the only completed fort in the entire bay, it was vital in the protecting from Confederate Raiders. Early in the war, ten thousand rifles were moved to Alcatraz from the State armory, to prevent them from being used by southern sympathizers. The crew of a Confederate privateer were among the first inmates to be held within "The Rock." Alcatraz's notoriety as a penitentiary overshadows its earlier, and longer use by the Army. Surprisingly, this small island once was the most powerful fort west of the Mississippi River. There was some limited modernization of the island's defenses after the Civil War. Rifled cannons were mounted. In 1854 some 450 electrically controlled underwater mines were brought to the island to protect the Bay. However, as the ships of potential enemies became more and more powerful, the defenses were increasing! ly obsolete. In 1907 Alcatraz officially ceased being a fortress and became Pacific ... • 10. Alcatraz as a Tourist Attraction Essay It's 1934, prohibition is the law, and organized crime is booming. You've been convicted of tax evasion and have spent the last couple years at the Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary. With several thousand dollars stuffed in the hollow handle of your tennis racket, and a warden in your pocket, you've been living life like a king. But all that's about to come to and end, you find yourself standing on Pier 41, Fisherman's Warf, San Francisco bay. It's early morning and the fog obscures your view. As it starts to lift and recede into the ocean, it takes along with it all forms of courage and hope that still remain within you. So how has this island managed to survive this long? It has survived through the interest of the people that do not inhabit it. It has survived because of tourism. So how has Alcatraz transformed from one of the most feared prisons of its time, to one of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions? I feel this question demands an answer because no other prison in U.S. history has ever been so popular for so many different reasons. It started as a U.S. Army fort, then became a high security prison, was then the inspiration to the Indian Movement, and ended its career to this day as a popular tourist attraction. I feel that the fears and stories that have escaped from the island during the time it was a federal prison, have heightened people's curiosity about what it was like to be a prisoner of "The Rock." Each day more and more people venture to Pier 41, they buy their ticket aboard the Old Blue, and start their adventure to the island of the unknown. With this also came a noticeable rise in organized crime in many of the big cities. Even worse, the crimes committed by members of these gangs became more violent. Soon prisons were overcrowded and were merely hold facilities. No correction was in mind for these prisoners. Convicts filled the empty hours with talk, mostly about the crimes they had committed and ways they could beat the law. Drug addicts and other petty offenders were mixed with killers and robbers. Young felons, who had taken to crime for no more than sheer pleasure or pride on a dare, came out of prison with no job skills but with plenty of advice from more experienced criminals. In 1933, J. Edgar Hoover was made the director of the recently established FBI agency. Hoover had plans to crack down on these criminals. The problem Hoover faced was that, no sooner were the criminals locked up than the crime organizations would bust them out. With this major problem in mind, the Justice Department began looking into a maximum–security prison that was not easy to access and therefore inescapable. The Bay Model is a 1.5 acre, indoor, three–dimensional hydraulic tidal simulation model covering the entire San Francisco Bay Estuary including the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers Delta. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) created the model in 1957 to study estuary circulation and flow, geometry, and the impact of anthropology. USACE was able to survey potential anthropogenic hazards and the way they would change the landscape of the estuary on an accelerated timeframe. While USACE ceased its research efforts using the model in 2000, the model is still open to the public for educational purposes. The model features numerous points of interest for visitors including a 12–minute introductory video, the "Mountains to the Sea" and "Marinship" exhibits, the story of Corps of Engineers at Work, and a bookstore.... Moreover, I would also like to view the model to help me speculate on the possibility of harnessing the tidal energy currents of the estuary as a source of power. Inequality In The Golden City Social Inequality of the Golden City The Golden Gate Bridge takes a curious traveler across the San Francisco Bay area into a marvelous journey towards a technologically innovative city of San Francisco. The city of San Francisco has forever been a national symbol of coveted opportunity, cultural disapprobation, technological blossoming – and, frankly, economic inequality. In the past, countless attempts were made by multiple scholars to identify the sources of San Francisco's social inequality. Statisticians compiled large tomes of data, while Sociologists wrote unending arrays of books; all in efforts to understand the basis of social inequality in the Golden City. For those reasons, this essay will not explore the sources of San Francisco's inequality. On the contrary, this essay will answer a fundamental question of why the social inequality in San Francisco is becoming more profound and refuses to cease. Hence, answering this question can only be done by partitioning the image of social inequality into several distinct branches; historical nuances of San Francisco, political values in San Francisco, and economic origin within San Francisco. Surprisingly, all three branches diverge in context, but their individual analysis releases import artifacts describing how the greatest city of the South continues to divide its citizens economically. • 15. The California Clapper Rail and Its Preservation California Clapper Rail (A) Description and Ecology The California Clapper Rail, Rallus longirostris obsoletus, is a northern California bird that typically resides in the San Francisco Bay Estuary, and can be seen as south as San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. The clapper rail is part of the order Gruiformes and the family Rallidae. It is one of the largest birds in the Rallidae family, measuring 32–47 cm bill to tail typically. Males on average weigh 300–350g and females weigh in at 248–301g. Clapper rails have the physical appearance of a hen, however with a long, orange bill, that is not a feature of a hen. They typically have black and white sides and white feathers under the tail. The difference between an adolescent and an adult is that the young have a paler bill, a gray body, and black sides. California clapper rails are very similar to Virginia clapper rails, but the California rail is slightly larger. Rails are known for being very secretive, which makes spotting them in the wild very difficult. They are very sensitive to disturbances in the wild, and if they sense something, they typically either freeze, hide or run to avoid the disturbance. Rails are also known to be able to swim if necessary to escape a predator. The calls of clapper rails are all variations of the same note, and factors of the call include population size, time of day, tides, and weather. The clapper is the most common call by the clapper rail itself. Clapper rails are best ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Estuaries : San Francisco Bay As you may know, a estuary, particularly is a enclosed body of water aside the coast where freshwater from rivers and streams intertwine with the salt water from the ocean. As a matter of fact, estuaries are "places of transition from land to sea and freshwater to salt water." An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water formed where freshwater from rivers and streams flows into the ocean, mixing with the salty sea water. Estuaries and the lands surrounding them are places of transition from land to sea, and from fresh to salt water. Since this estuary is located in a temperate zone, the average daily temperature of the water changes with the seasons. • 17. Global Warming and The San Francisco Bay Do you think the San Francisco Bay would not be affected by climate change of global warming? The short answer is no. Scientists believe that in the future that the sea level of the San Francisco Bay will rise and flood several of the San Francisco Bay Area's populated areas and landmarks such as the San Francisco and Oakland International Airport. How could we prevent or slow down the bay from taking over our landmarks and populated areas? Around 10,000 years ago the San Francisco Bay was once not a bay. The glaciers from the ice age melted into water and then the water flowed into "canyons" to form into the San Francisco Bay. However the flowing of the bay may not have stopped. The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission predicts that the sea level will increase so much the sea will take over and flood populated areas and landmarks like the San Francisco and the Oakland International Airports. We could recover from natural disasters like earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes, but not sea level rising. The New York Daily News say that it would take only 12 feet for the ocean to rise and take over several landmarks and populated areas in the San Francisco Bay Area and another landmark could be San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park. Rounding the path where the hills turn to marsh, a flock of birds swarmed inflight before me. Watching, their movements seemed frantic. Diving and rising. Sporadically flying this way or that. Some coming so close, that it felt as if I could reach out and touch them midflight. And yet as they flew over my head I realized their motions weren't without form. They flew in unison. Guided by instinct or habit or experience. The reason: predation. The flock of thrushes were harassing a lone raptor. Probably because it ventured too near to their nest. The birds kept toe–to–toe with the predator's dives and changes in direction. This seemingly defenseless prey was shepherding this hunter. Working as group for their full survival. I watched them until they flew are beyond my sight. Over the hills into the surrounding landscape. As I stood there for a while, with the smell of salt lingering in the coastal air, I manage to lose myself in despite the closeness of industry around me. It was a reminder that the nature is still so full of surprises. And without the contribution of others that I, as well as the rest of the world around me, won't survive. • 27. History Of San Francisco Bay 2.BACKGROUND The San Francisco bay was one of the best natural harbours in the world and it was also the gateway to the Pacific Ocean. (Loomis, 1958) This fact meant that its bay would become a leading trade centre. A rush of people were attracted to San Francisco because of its port, the natural beauty and the gold rush, where thousands of people were brought in by ship. This lead to a shortage in water in all areas and transportation services had to be improved to provide enough water to all places. A ferry service was started that crossed the river from San Francisco to Sacramento to carry heavy equipment and people to the gold fields in the time of the gold rush and just thereafter. As the population grew the ferry service improved as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. What Is Alcatraz Prison Alcatraz Penitentiary harbored some of this country's worst criminals from 1934 until its closing in 1963. This prison was located on Alcatraz Island, which was in the San Francisco Bay. It was housed on this island so the prisoners would not be tempted to escape. This prison was shut down because of the high costs to keep it running. Although many prisoners attempted to escape, the prison claimed that all of them failed at it. Alcatraz was set apart and on an island, it was greatly guarded because it once was a fort, and the inmates were only allowed outside for one hour each day. Attempting to escape Alcatraz without a ride was extremely difficult. The water was really cold, and it was hard to attempt swimming away without getting spotted.... The prison reported that they drowned in their attempt to cross the bay, but there has never been any evidence to prove this theory. This attempt was in June of 1962, just a nine months before the prison closed its doors. These prisoners escaped by crawling through a hole they dug in the walls of the prison, and climbed up onto the roof. They used paper–mache look alike heads and placed them in their bunks to buy them time to escape. Supposedly, the men made a makeshift raft and paddles to cross the bay. Since then the three men haven't been found. Altogether, Alcatraz Penitentiary was a pretty tough prison to escape, and maybe that is why the government placed the worse criminals there. Out of thirty–six men who attempted to escape, only three went without being captured. Over fifty years after its closing, Alcatraz is still the most infamous prison of this country. This prison is so popular that it receives over 1.3 million visitors each year, and it's one of San Francisco's biggest tourist attractions. While this prison is said to be inescapable that's mostly to do with the government trying to keep its reputation up. Being that the prison open for nearly thirty years and only three prisoners were said to escape, it could be considered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. alcatraz An icon of power and strength, Alcatraz has become the single most recognizable symbol of American society. Situated in the San Francisco Bay, one can't help but be drawn to the rocky shore, the dark walls, and the lone light tower sanding cold against a picturesque sunset imagining what it would have been like to be incarcerated in one of the world's most infamous prisons. Discovered in 1775 by the Spanish explorer Juan Miguel de Ayala, La Isla de los Alcatraces was little more than a rock inhabited by a group of pelicans from which the island bears its name (Alcatraces meaning pelicans in Spanish). Many prisoners worked as servants and maids for the many families that were required to live on the island. A few were even commissioned to baby sit young children who lived on the island. Flowers and shrubs were imported to help beautify the rocky island. Many inmates, because of this, were allowed their own private gardens. In the 1920's prisoners were allowed to build a baseball field on which different inmate teams played in their own uniforms. On Friday nights hundreds of people would come from the mainland to see the exciting "Alcatraz Fights" which pitted two inmates against each other in a boxing–type match. With the rise of organized crime in the 1930's Alcatraz went through some dramatic changes. The deteriorating cell house was refurbished with electronically controlled cell doors, metal detectors, gun galleries which allowed guards an elevated view of the entire cell house, permanently mounted tear gas canisters in the ceiling of the dining hall, and tool proof bars. New cells nicked named "Strip" cells and "The Hole" were built to house those inmates who required complete isolation. A strict silence rule was instituted and those who violated it could be put in isolation for up to eight days. The once merry days of baseball games and gardening were over. In 1963, due to the exorbent cost of running an island prison, Alcatraz was officially closed. Arguments quickly arose over what to do with the eyesore that the prison had become. ... Cost Center Definition Unlike a profit center, a cost center is not operated with the intention of earning revenue or making a profit directly. Instead, it is a part of a business that generates costs without making money. A cost center only enables profit centers to generate revenue. For example, in a small retail business, each store, or each class of products, may operate as a profit center, while the customer service and human resources divisions operate as cost centers. A cost centre is a department within a company that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company. However, all cost centres perform an important job. It improves the satisfaction of customers and indirectly increases sales.[1] The manager and employees of cost centre are not accountable for its profit and investment decision but they are responsible for its cost.[2] They are liable for keeping their cost in line or below budget because cost centre does not produce directly from its activities.[3] The performance of the managers is assessed by comparing the actual expenses incurred with the budgeted expenses for the cost centre. Basically cost is the control data in the cost centre. [ Furthermore, the main objective of a cost centre is to minimize cost whereas

At 6:45 they went to the mess hall to eat breakfast. Then around 7:25 guards took the inmates to their "jobs" such as, gardening, tailoring, and laundry. They worked until 11:40 which is when the inmates had dinner, the same way as breakfast. • 35. Golden Gate Research Paper HISTORY Located at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, a three–mile–long strait connects the San Francisco Bay to the nearby Pacific Ocean. Due the location's geography, most claimed that such a project would cost no less than... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soon after the pier (surrounded by a caisson) was placed in the water, a storm caused the nearby water to churn. This water raised the caisson and continuously beat it into the fender. After removing the pier, workers reinforced the fender with concrete; thus making the fender a part of the final foundation. The pier was completed in January 1935; followed five months by the tower. Two months after completing the towers, it was time to begin constructing the cables. Two main cables would stretch from one anchorage to the other: passing over both of the towers. Using technology from the company John A. Roebling's Sons, workers spun over 25,000 pencil–thin wires into 7,650–foot–long, 36.5–inch–wide cables. With the advanced technology, workers were able to complete the construction in less than seven months. In September 1936, workers completed the roadway steel. Eight months later, workers complete and secure the road deck. This was achieved through the use of 254 sets of suspender ropes, which were spaced fifty feet apart and extended to the main cables. These ropes help to secure and support the weight of the new road. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse The salt marsh harvest mouse is listed as an endangered species in 1970s. Its phylogeny is of the Kingdom Animalia, the Phylum Chordata, the Class Mammalia, the Order Rodentia, the Family Cricetidae, the Genus Reithrodontomys, and the Species raviventris. The closest living relative of the salt marsh harvest mouse, according to genetic mapping, is the plains harvest mouse, R. montanus, a western interior species that are found in Mexico and central US. Within the species of R. raviventris there are the northern subspecies, R. r. halicoetes, and southern subspecies, R. r. raviventris both of which reside in Northern California around the Bay area. The northern subspecies can be found in the San Pablo and Suisun marshes of California, whereas the southern variant reside in the marshes of Corte Madera, Richmond and South San Francisco Bay. Salt marsh harvest mice heavily depend on dense coverage of the pickleweed (Salicornia virginica)––their preferred habitat. In marshes with salt–tolerant plants, the mice escape the higher tides in winter through the use of said vegetation and sometimes reside in the plants for a good amount of their lives. Mice also migrate to neighboring grasslands as another way of escape during high winter tides. The mice are presumed to sustain themselves on plant leaves, seeds and stems. In winter, they seem to prefer fresh green grasses. As for the other three seasons, they tend to favor pickleweed and saltgrass. The northern subspecies of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Descriptive Essay About Friends I was a sophomore in High School, Ellen was a freshman and by the beginning of the calendar year, we were wildly popular, it seemed as if every freshman and sophomore on campus knew who we were. We often dressed alike, something we retained from when we were children and our mother clothed us in the same outfits, we teased our hair up in bouffant styles, wore heaps of mascara, and eyeliner artistically drawing little wings in the corner of our eyes. My sister and I were part of the in–crowd and fashionably trendy. Our circle of friends was a diverse group of classmates; Ellen had her freshman friends and I had my sophomore friends, however, our closest, bosom–buddy friends, were three long–haired individuals named Allen, Adrian and Glenn. For some reason, we enjoyed their company and spent most of our time with these lost souls. All our classmates knew that the five of us were best friends. At lunch, we met at the school entrance, walked to the Diner at Walgreens together, ordered whatever the five of us combined, could afford; a few servings of French Fries; two or three hamburgers, a couple of sodas which we shared among us, as we whiled away the lunch hour, solving the teenage problems of the world. I will never, ever, in a million years forget my sixteenth birthday when Ellen, Allen, Adrian and Glenn arranged to have a professional photo taken as a surprise gift for me. • 39. Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse : Image By B Moose Peterson Via... Geography 3480 James Keogh Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse Image by B. Moose Peterson via Smithsonian Institute Abstract: There is very little known about the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse (SMHM). In 1970, SMHM was added to the endangered list, largely due to the fact their salt water habitats 84% gone. With the mouse being just under 3 inches in length, nocturnal, loving its dense cover protection, and the close resemblance to the Western Harvest Mouse, it makes field identification very difficult. Further research is needed not only into the population numbers of SMHM, but its habitat as well. Capture–recapture will be used to assess the SMHM population, where it will be measured, weighed, a patch of hair taken for re–identification, and released back into its habitat. Subplots will also be measured for the Pickleweed population using USFS protocol. Despite conservation efforts, there is a lot more that needs to be done to evaluate SMHM and its habitat to ensure its continued survival. The objective of this research proposal is to measure the SMHM population and its habitat, in order to evaluate the probability of its continued survival. The results of this research will be forwarded to the appropriate agency for further conservation efforts of SMHM in the San Francisco Bay. Keywords: salt marsh harvest mouse, SF bay area, Pickleweed Introduction With nearly 84% of its natural habitat gone, it is no wonder Reithrodontyms Raviventris finds itself on the endangered species ... • 40. Environmental Issues Challenging The Clean Water Act Of... Coastal Area I live less than a mile from the San Francisco Bay and Estuary (SFBay). I wrote about this bay's environmental issues in the Unit #1 Learning Journal assignment and have decided to use this opportunity to elaborate on two specific environmental issues challenging the SFBay. To summarize this ecosystem: It's the largest bay and estuary on the Pacific coast and has been damaged by industrial activity, starting in 1850 with the Gold Rush and quickly followed by the logging, railroad and salt pond industries. Its biggest threats are pollution, water diversion and filling–in. Conservation efforts began in 1965 and today the SFBay is collectively overseen by government and private organizations. Two environmental problems the SFBay faces are mercury contamination and overfishing. The Clean Water Act lists the SFBay as impaired for mercury. Estimates suggest the bay's sediment is contaminated with about two hundred metric tons of mercury, much going back to original Gold Rush. This pollutant has affected SFBay biota resulting in a state issued fish advisory waning not to eat some common fish such as Striped bass and limited intake of other species (OEHHA, 2011; Ely & Viani, 2010). At the same time humanity was busy cutting down thousand year old redwood trees and hydraulically destroying the Sierra Mountains, they were also busy pillaging the SFBay for fish, shellfish and perhaps the unlucky whale pod that happened by. Some species were immediately depleted and by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
