2. If you owe taxes, you should file and pay as soon as you can.
Penalties and interest collect on your taxes each month they
remain unfiled and unpaid. While there is no penalty for filing a
late return if you are due a refund, the sooner you file, the
sooner you receive your refund.

3. E-filing is the safest and easiest way to file your taxes. The IRS’
Free File program allows taxpayers whose income is less than
$60,000 to use brand-name tax software to file their federal
taxes for free.

4. If you made more than $60,000, you can still use Free File
Fillable Forms to e-file. This program uses electronic versions
of IRS paper forms. No matter who prepares your tax return,
you can use IRS e-file through Oct. 15.

5. If you owe taxes and are unable to pay in full, pay as much as you
can when you file your return. Doing so will reduce the amount of
penalties and interest assessed on the debt.
