2010 Football World Cup: The Last Stand?

South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Namibia and
Nigeria have all deployed a mobile broadcast TV
network and are heavily relying on the Football
 World Cup to boost uptake.

ISDB-T and Analog TV handsets are shipping in
large numbers to South America. Telegent Systems
sold over 50 million Analog TV chipsets since mid-
2007 and registered for the filling of a $250 million
 IPO in November 2009.

 Nokia launched a DVB-H/DVB-T compatible
handset called the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition in
 November 2009.

TDF and Alcatel-Lucent are running DVB-H and
DVB-SH trials in France hoping it will encourage
mobile operators to adopt mobile broadcast TV
before the start of the Football World Cup.

The mobile data opportunity

According to Ericsson, data traffic globally grew 280% during each of
the last two years, and is forecast to double annually over the next
five years. Mobile data as surpassed voice traffic in December 2009
 at 140,000 Terabytes per month.

Off-loading 3G networks

Femtocells and WiFi compatible handsets offload some of the traffic
onto private fixed broadband connections, reducing mobile operators
operating costs. However, this option becomes less relevant outside
 the home or office environment.

Mobile broadcast technologies such as MediaFLO and DVB-H have
the ability to divert this traffic onto an entirely separate network
infrastructure and spectrum with operating costs which are
uncorrelated to the number of active users.

When the data traffic carried over 3G networks will eventually reach
a critical level, mobile broadcast will eventually be understood as a
 cost-effective alternative.
