Title of Module: Framing and Internalizing My Values
Instructor:
The intent of this module is to provide a forum for discussion about values. Values are
principles that are the foundational elements of an individual. Everyone has values, but
an individual’s values may be very different from others. Values constantly evolve;
some have been a part of one’s life for such a long time that it is difficult to identify
them specifically.
Core values shape students’ culture and define the character of their being. Core
values also define the foundation of businesses and the character of the work that they
do. These factors should be recognized as students, future braille transcribers, and
contractors for various work/services.

A. Introduction of Values and Beliefs (45 minutes)
Objective SS2.1: Explore personal, work, and people values.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
Instructor:
Each of us has beliefs and values that assist and guide us when we are
making decisions and choices.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
On the tables (or pinned to the bulletin board) students will find cards with various values
listed. Have students think about those things that are most important to them and collect
ten to twenty cards that you believe speak to your core values and beliefs.
Students collect cards and take them back to their desk/table.
Students should review their choices to make sure they are satisfied with what they
have selected (they can exchange or add anything they think is missing).

Hand out a set of cards (personal, work and people) to each student.

Have them compare their lists with the student next to them, noting similarities and
differences.
C. Clarifying My Core Values and Beliefs (30 minutes)
Objective SS2.2: Identify specific value preferences and desires and take action based
on identified values.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
Instructor:
Have students take their organized three lists (personal, work, people) and map each
set of values to the chart provided to prioritize the things they see/feel in the categories
provided.

Objective SS2.3: Understand more about values and prioritizing things that are most
important, especially in a work environment.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
Instructor:
In teams of three, have students look at their most important values and beliefs in the
work category.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
Present questions for the teams to discuss such as:
What have you learned about yourself and your values/beliefs?
How will these influence choices and decisions about the work you do?
What are some of the values you believe most employers hold?
What appears to be most important as you begin to work as a braille transcriber
contractor?

FOLLOW-THROUGH ACTIVITIES
The two following activities can be inserted as needed. They relate to continued
exploration and identification of preferences related to personal, work, and people
values.
These activities will also promote a level of reflection and thinking in gaining a greater
understanding about core values and the things that are most important, especially in a
work environment.
Activity #1
Have students write down three things/activities they do regularly or that they enjoy

Then students should identify the values each thing/activity reflects.
