Cities today are growing in terms
of number and size every day. As
India is moving on the path of
rapid and massive urbanisation,
urban centres are also growing at
a faster pace.
Census 2011, positioned level of
urbanization at 31.1% with
number of urban residents at 377
million spread over more than
7500 urban settlements.

Urban Population
While the total population growth from 2001 to
2011 is 21%, the urban population growth is
27%, indicating that Delhi has been urbanizing
faster than it is growing in the past decade.

Although master plans are made for proper
functioning of the cities but a very little
attention is paid to street design which is the
basic unit of cities and the urbanscape.
It is important to address the design, street
environment and street network holistically
with a design led approach as applied
successfully in UK and areas of Europe.

Approach To Street Design
• Both physical and social dimensions together make
important component for an integrated street design.
• Physical dimensions incorporate components such
as mobility traffic scale.
• And social dimensions build upon accessibility, focus
of people, compact urban form and multimodal
travel.
• A well designed street is able to link physical social
and transport networks which produce workable
alternatives to journeys by car individually such as
public transport supported by paratransit modes,
cycling and walking.
• The sustainable approach thus looks for greater
integration treating street as place which is managed
well in context of travel, time and calmed traffic

Special care should be taken to improve the
mobility of impaired and disabled.
Considerations In Street Design

Aspect of legibility should be focused for clear
perception of routes by the people. Features and
landmarks which are aesthetically and
historically recognised are valued by the people.
Transition zones should be treated by using
large trees, narrowing of carriageways and
change in surface materials.
Management of traffic by speed control and
permeability helps in maintaining the ambience
Controlled Street markets, kerbs and parking
implemented the way it is perceived can
definitely improve the street life of Delhi.
