This document summarizes the spread of test automation and the Selenium community in Japan from 2012-2019. It describes how Nozomi Ito established a test automation company and launched the first Selenium community in Japan in 2013. The community grew over time and hosted periodic meetups. In 2019, Japan hosted the global SeleniumConf conference with over 400 attendees from 26 countries. Looking ahead, Ito's next challenge is to use AI to overcome difficulties in test automation like setup complexity, scripting for non-programmers, and maintenance costs.
