Meiosis occurs in reproductive cells and involves two rounds of nuclear division not accompanied by DNA replication. During prophase I of meiosis, homologous chromosomes pair and undergo crossing over and synapsis. Tetrads are formed as the paired homologous chromosomes are held together. Independent assortment of homologous chromosomes occurs during metaphase I.
