1. IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS
2. LIGHTING/SHOT TYPES - FLASHBACK
I have used a flashback style scene in my video much like rapper big Sean has in his media,
as it portrays a idea of struggle and what they had to do to get where they are today. I have
used this shot type as an inspirational aspect with the black and white sepia color to give it
that in the past feeling. The dark colors used in this shot type helps add emotion to the scene
it gives the audience a feel that the rapper didn’t have much to start with, an had a dark life
which also adds to the stereotypical rap genre aspects.
3. SHOT TYPES/LIGHTING - NOT HAVING MONEY
I have chosen a shot from big seans song that shows him having just enough change for food. I
have taking this idea into consideration in my video as I have shown a close up of my character
counting small change. In big seans scene the lighting is dark and the shot is a mid shot and
changes to a close up to help focus on emotions and build a bond with rapper and audience, I
have used this with a small twist in my video giving it the black and white flashback feel of how
hard it was for my rapper but also a close up to show there wasn’t much money to start with and
he made something out of it.
4. EDITING - CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE
I have used flashes of the past and present to show how my rappers
life has changed since he became famous, this has been done by
rappers before such as Jeremiah in his song dreams about him
being poor and driving a cheap car to waking up in a nice house with
a expensive car outside. I have twisted this idea and made it from a
dream into a flashback of my rapper reminiscing about how it was
before he was famous an how it is in his life now. I have used shots
that are opposite to each other to portray this idea e.g. cheap car
expensive car, branded shops and cheap stores.
5. STORY/EDITING - DEVELOP IDEA OF STRUGGLE
Most rap songs have some idea of struggle behind
them, its either about how it was or how it is now. I
have emphasized on the idea of struggle through my
video and developed it to portray the idea of the
hard times my rapper faced before becoming
famous. Using close up shots of him shouting down
the phone and close ups of the car not working
builds the emotion barrier between the viewer as
close ups make them feel closer to the scene. I have
put the lighting in black and white to give it the
elusion of being in the rappers past, but also it also
represents the darkness he faced in the past.
Primark represents my rapper not always dressing
expensive and the quick shot type used in these
scenes indicate it can all change quick for you if u try
and put the work in.
6. PROPS - CHALLENGE IDEAS OF RICH LIFE
Rap music now days shows the benefits only of being
famous e.g.. The expensive assets that can be purchased.
My video also challenges this idea as in migos song he
opens the scene with chains and watches laid out to show
his expense, I have used this shot in my own video to
challenge this convention of rap. A famous prop in rap
music recently has become the shisha, it is a pipe that is
smoked by Arab sheikhs to show there standards in life,
as it is smoked by rich people like a cigar. It is featured in
a few songs e.g. drakes original started from the bottom
and also massaris song, I have put this prop in my video
to challenge the idea of being rich like a main stream
video.
7. BRANDING OF PRODUCTS AND OUTFITS
Rap music uses branding of products to gain sponsor but
also it helps with funding's and also looks good in there
video. In drakes video he represents Versace as they
sponsored his video and the clothes in the video, a lot of
rappers promote dre deats as dr dre helps build there
song for them, I have taken this into consideration and
used Hugo boss as a promoter for are clothes, but also it
looks good in are video showing are rapper shops in this
big shops now from Primark. I have advanced this idea of
branding and used it in a way to show my rappers good
life but also advertising to a large consumer of music for
Hugo boss, which helps towards my rappers residual
income.
8. ACTING STYLES - USE OF GROUPS
Rap songs use groups of people to show gangs and
friends who's they grew up with that are still with them
through the thick and thin. I have used this idea of groups
of friends to show how we all made it from the hard times.
The shot type is a long shot to show everyone in the shot,
I have considered this in my video and showed off us all
having fun. I have used a group for a different purpose
then normal rap songs, where French Montana has used
a group of guys to show the hard gangs he was with
before becoming famous, I have used a mixed group of
different sex people to show anyone can listen to my song
together.
9. STORY - DEVELOPING A BETTER LIFESTYLE
IDEA
Like most rap songs in the 21st century, my video also challenges the aspects of a fast
lifestyle, showing off things every common humans wants e.g. large amounts of money,
showing men with women in a alpha male aspect. I have used shots to show that my rapper
is doing good in life now, much like a lot of rap songs we see on TV now but I have
developed this idea to make it original as I have shown that things wasn’t always like this for
my rapper so these aspects are a reward for his hard work. A lot of music videos these days
only show one side of there life either it’s a hard life rap video about how hard life is or a
expensive budget video with all the celebrity aspects people desire. With my video I have
considered both aspects and showed my rapper in both forms so viewers have a mixed
emotion with the video.
10. EDITING/LIGHTING/STORY/PROPS- COMPARING
OF TWO LIFESTYLES
I have compared two life styles of my rapper to challenge the idea of starting
from the bottom which is the topic of my song. I have used editing ways to
help portray this factor such as slow fades to slowly blend into the scenes as
it helps the viewer ease into the different lifestyles from seeing the broke life
into the fast life. I have used the black and white sepia effect with dark
lighting in past shots to help build the idea of struggle. I have used props in
my video as the major way to portray the idea of change from the struggle
such as a cheap phone to an expensive phone, cheap car to an exotic car
and also costume changes as in the past my rapper looks like a ghetto
gangster but in the present he looks smart and well dressed. I have
challenged and developed the stereo types of rap music in my video by
developing how we see rappers and that it isn't all just the fun life and also
challenging the idea of stereo typical rap songs as its either really hard hitting
and full of struggle or fun and about flashy life where as I bought them both
into one video.
