5. The background of language movement (1947-1952)
- The question about the issue of state language was raised
immediately after the creation of Pakistan.
- The central government of Pakistan forcedly declared “Urdu”
as the only state language.
- The intellectuals & people of all classes started to raise their
voice & it soon converted into a mass movement.

• West Pakistan rulers had tried to impose Urdu as state language; which was spoken only
by a minor 3.27% while ignoring the vast majority of 56% of it’s total population those who
speaking Bangla.
7. Major Events of Language Movement: 1947
September 15:
Tamaddun Majlish published a pamphlet,“the state
language of Pakistan is Bangla or Urdu?”
Octobor 1947 :
National Language Action Committee was formed
by initiative of Tamuddun Majlish.
8. Women in the Language Movement
Women’s task included ,but were not limited to :
-writing posters
-Management of school girls in
Procession
They participated in rally and meeting along with men.
Later , women came forward to void in leadership when male leaders were
imprisoned.

10. Significant of language movement
Jan6 : Nazimuddin declared “Only Urdu” as the state language in
Paltan Maidan, Dhaka.This enraged the people of East Pakistan.
February 21: Nine o'clock in the morning, students began
gathering on the Dhaka University premises in defiance of Section 144.
February 21 :Police opened fire and killed a number of students, including Abdus
Salam, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abul Barkat and Abdul Jabbar.
11. • People from different countries including Bangladesh and West
Bengal are speaking Bengali.
• BABBEL MAGAZINE said that 261.8 million total speaker in the world
speaking in bengali.
• It heIp us a lot in encouraging in independence war 1971.
• Bangla language is now known as the eighth official language

12. The importance of the martyr day and international
mother language day
• Since 1952, the Bengali nation has been celebrating this day as
Shaheed Day.
• Prabhat Fari’s song of 21 February is an integral part
of the life of the Bengali nation.
• After the independence of Bangladesh to take this day
is celebrated as holiday .

• Sacrifice life for language is an unforgettable event in the history of the
world.So,that 21 February is declared as the International Mother
Language Day in UNESCO session 1999 in Paris.
• Since 2000, Ekushey February is celebrated as International Mother
Language Day by the people of the world.
15. Muslim League and Its Undemocratic Activities
In 1947,all Indian Muslim League was renamed as
Pakistan Muslim League.
It started its journey as the ruling party of new
government.
From early,the party was controlled by by West Pakistan
Leaders.
The West Pakistan Muslim League Leaders created the
policy of disparity against the Bangalee and started to
oppress them in various issues.
Some dedicated Bangalee Leaders had been ignored.
During some period,the Muslim League created internal
conflict.
16. The party became divided into two different ideologies.
One was the follower of Suhrawardi and the other was the
follower of Khaja Nazimuddin.
The first one was the democratic and the second one was
the undemocratic and followed of West Pakistan .
This internal conflict made the party weakness.
Their undemocratic activities broke out in all sectors and
they were not interested to develop East Pakistan.
17. Newly formed political parties and formation of the
Awami Muslim League.
A number of leaders became very upset too see their
undemocratic activities.
Then,the opposition of Muslim League came forward
to create new political party.
At last some political party were visible such as
Cummunist party,People freedom league,Gono Azadi
league etc.
Then,public support was increasing in East Pakistan
Muslim league.
Some leaders of East Pakistan called a meeting for
creating the new opposition party.
23-24 June in 1949,300 top level representatives
participated in the house named Rose Garden in
Dhaka
Then ,the decided unanimously to form a new
political party named “The Awami Muslim League”.

19. The Formation of Jukto Front an the Background of Formation
along with Election and Government
On 14th November 1953,the Jukto front formed in the council
of Awami Muslim League in Mymensingh . Jukto front was
formed to protest unitedly against the unfair discrimination
and failed rule of the Muslim League though the elections of
1954 .
However the elections of 1954 it was explained by Jukto Front
to the Muslim League that the East Bengal was not needed
Muslim League .
Although the election were supposed to be held in 1951 but
the fear of the defeat of the Muslim League the election was
held on march 8,1954 . In the election of 1954 , the BALLOT
REVOLUTION against the exploitation of West Pakistan.

After the formation of Pakistan the failure of the Muslim
League’s inequalities led , internal conflicts , in the
formation of different factions resulting in the formation
of a new political party The Awami Muslim League ,
Farmer Labor Party , East Pakistan Council etc.
In order to defeat the Muslim League , it was planned
to held the alliance partics according to this plan .
“NOUKA” was their symbol in the election of 1954
21. 1. To Establish Bengali as one of the state
language of Pakistan .
2.To dissolute the Zamidari System without
compensation and distribute the surplus land
among the landless people.
3.To nationalize the Jute Industry.
4.To set up salt factory
5.To establish co-operative agricultural system to
develop agriculture.
6.To generate employment for the mohazer-artist-
technician class.
7.To eradicate flood and famine through digging
canal and arranging irrigation.

23. THE GOVERNMENT OF THE JUKTO
FRONT
1.Zukto front an alliance of the opposite parties to
contest - in the elections to the east Bengal Legistative
assembly held between 8-12 March,1954.
2.The result was a comprehensive victory for the alliance
or front composed mainly of four parties or east Bengal
namely Awami Legue,Krishak Sramik Party,Nizam-E-
Islam and ganatantri Dal.
3.In fact,the Zukto Front reflected of all shades of
political spectrum in the province emerged mainly due to
the failure of the Muslim League as a rulling party and
other historical political and economic reasons.
24. 4. Importantly;however,the election result was a signal to the
end of the dominance of the national elite in the politics of
the East Bengal.
5. A vast majority of the elected members were new,relatively
young and experienced in government and politics.
6. The architects of the Zukto front Victory in the East Bengal
were the triumvirate,AK Fazlul Huq,Huseyn Shaheed
Suhrawardy,and Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani,and it
was most likely that the chisma of each of them influenced
voters much.

26. Martial law is the imposition of direct military control.
• First martial law was issued in Bangladesh in 27
October, 1958 By coming to power of General
Ayub khan.
• Ayub khan has enslaved us for 10 years by
issuing this martial law
• Between 1951 and 1958 he stregneth his
position by issuing these laws below.
• the power of the bureaucracy was curtailed.
• Develop new capitalist classes based on Punjab.
27. • A section of landowners were brought in favor of
Ayub Khan.
• The business class is promoted as a vehicle for the
development process by encouraging the class.
• Ayub khan become entrepreneurial in the
development of the private sector.
• The use of Islam in bringing united two parts of
Pakistan came with opposite result.
