Deforestation:
Pass out a copy of the “Deforestation Fact Cards” and
“Sorting Mat” to each set of partners.
Ask students to think about which facts support
which answer to the question: “Is deforestation an
issue kids should worry about?”
Sort the facts cards into the categories they think are
best-fitting.
Explain why you thought certain facts supported a
certain opinion. Share out observations of how the
facts were sorted. Here are some key points to bring
out:
Not every fact is viewed in the same way.
Certain facts might strongly support one opinion, while
other facts might be difficult to figure out how it could
support either opinion.
Some facts may be able to support both opinions,
depending on the explanation (or “rationale”) that goes
with it.

should worry about?”, and use the facts to plan an opinion piece of
writing.
Choose at least 2 facts that support your opinion! The last space: this
is a place to choose a fact that could support both opinions. Students
will persuade their audience that the fact best supports their own
opinion.

  • 3. Graph our DATA! Which do you think is more valuable to people: a city or a forest? Explain your reasoning!
  • 4. Deforestation: What does the vocabulary term “deforestation” mean?

  • 10. Is deforestation an issue kids should worry about? Discuss this question with your table groups! Hang the Question Poster on the board.
  • 11. Deforestation: Pass out a copy of the “Deforestation Fact Cards” and “Sorting Mat” to each set of partners. Ask students to think about which facts support which answer to the question: “Is deforestation an issue kids should worry about?” Sort the facts cards into the categories they think are best-fitting.
  • 12. Explain why you thought certain facts supported a certain opinion. Share out observations of how the facts were sorted. Here are some key points to bring out: Not every fact is viewed in the same way. Certain facts might strongly support one opinion, while other facts might be difficult to figure out how it could support either opinion. Some facts may be able to support both opinions, depending on the explanation (or “rationale”) that goes with it.

  • 15. Opinion Writing: RIGHT SIDE = PLAN: Pass out the planner to each student. Choose facts that best support THEIR OWN answer to the question “Is deforestation and issue kids should worry about?”, and use the facts to plan an opinion piece of writing. Choose at least 2 facts that support your opinion! The last space: this is a place to choose a fact that could support both opinions. Students will persuade their audience that the fact best supports their own opinion. LEFT SIDE = WRITE: Write the final draft of their opinion piece.
