It is your System – Through a cycle of continual improvement the ISM will help you Manage
“SAFETY & POLLUTION PREVENTION more efficiently & effectively - Witch must be good for
everybody.
IISSMM CCOODDEE recognizes the importance of Safety and Pollution Prevention & requires that the Shipping
Cie offers ships in its Fleet its full support and Backing.
Everyone has a role to play in developing a “SAFETY CULTURE” on BOARD and while the Master
remains in charge of the Ship at all Time.
The D. P from the Cie is there to provide the ship with support and guidance.
If you learn to out as a TEAM, the whole Safety Culture of the ship will improve.
The FLAG – STATE – AUDITOR – FSA, can visit any part of the ship and talk to any member of the
crew during his verification to establish that the SMS has been properly implemented only then will
he be satisfied that he can issue the SMC ---
The Cie and its DP should be ready to offer support to the ship and provide extra Resources when
they are needed.
RREEMMEEMMBBEERR
An Inspector can visit a Ship at any time in any port is likely to ask questions on the Code.
So – Know what ISM requires of you if a major ISM problems is found, the ship can be sent to sea
and not allowed to return to port “ISM Compliance is Important”.
Training Organisation working accordance to the Procedures in the “MANUAL” and even using
Checklist to avoid making silly mistakes should starts to become routine & safety and Pollution
prevention a normal part of every day life.
• For a SHIP to be ready for “ISM” it needs to be maintained and its crew needs to be trained.
• Before a seafarer starts any job on board, it should be planned & all possible risks or
hazardous identified.
TThhee IISSMM __ CCOODDEE iiss aa ““MMAANNDDAATTOORRYY”” SAFETY and POLLUTION prevention Management system
designed for ships and shipping Cies. // Mise en application, Obligation/
• CCRREEWW must understand their participation and involvement in the SMS Safety and emergency
Procedures and Pollution prevention measures --- Also as it might apply to their specific
function on board.
• CCRREEWW TTrraaiinniinngg aanndd FFaammiilliiaarriissaattiioonn management contingency planning --- Reporting
conformities accidents and Hazardous occurrences / To Happen ---
• AAUUDDIITTIINNGG ------ Key Shipboard operation maintenance of the ship and equipment.
• MMAASSTTEERR ------ If the working relation ship between the master, the DP and the Management
Team ashore is not positive One – SMS might be affected.
•• TThhee DDPP ------ is appointed by the Cie and based ashore – he has a fundamental role between
the ship and the Cie and is central to its successful --- the respond when assistance is needed
or request from the ship independent day to day operation of ship Cie gives authority to DP
to act and direct access to its senior management....
AAUUDDIITTIINNGG
As comparing to surveying or inspection why something is wrong and why the SMS did not
prevent it from happening --- Rather than attempting / Try to measure compliance on the Basis.
•• WWhhaatt iiss ffoouunndd ttoo bbee wwrroonngg??
The Auditor will want to find out if the procedures were correctly followed and if not, because the
procedures were not understood.
