Main Objectives –
- Make mathematics as a part of children’s life
experiences.
- Shifting the focus from content to learning environments.
- Offer connection within mathematics or across subject
areas to application in sciences.
- Enjoy and appreciate the value of mathematics.
Specific Objectives-

Priya
G.Nath

To familiarize with a brick.
To understand a brick’s shape.
To build patterns through bricks.
To Test the strength of different arrangements of
bricks.
To perform simple mathematical operations related with
bricks such as find its weight, find the total number of

A brick kiln
This is where bricks are made

Priya
G.Nath
Bricks are made from clay soil dug from the
ground.
Stones are sieved from the clay.
Clay is pressed into rectangular moulds.
Bricks are left to dry.
Then they are stacked over channels of
burning charcoal and baked at high
temperature in a kiln.
Priya
G.Nath
A common
sight
near a
brick kiln

Priya
G.Nath
Brick feels
1.hard - moulded clay is baked at a very high temperature to form bricks
2. roughish and looks dull
3. dry
4. easy to handle - bricks are all the same regular shape and size making
them easy to carry and build

we must remember
Brick takes
these facts ,to make
a weight - they make a strong structure when bonded together we
good houses when
grow up.
Brick resists
1. cold - brick keeps in heat (insulates)
2.electricity - they will not carry an electrical charge
3. weather - bricks are hard-wearing and reasonably weatherproof
4. fire - they will blacken but not burn.

Priya
G.Nath

Brick changes
1. if frozen - bricks are not waterproof and will slowly absorb water - if the
water freezes and therefore expands then the ice will lead to the bricks flaking
and breaking up
2. if  knocked - bricks are brittle and will shatter - some bricks are stronger
than others depending on the sort of clay used
Lets find out which arrangement of bricks is the strongest!
Testing brick bonds
• The strengths of different types of bonds (patterns of building
the bricks) can be tested as shown below.
• 1. You need some rectangular blocks, a length of guttering
propped up at one end, and a big marble.
• 2.Build the blocks in a regular pattern a short distance away
from the guttering.
• 3. Place (not push) the marble on the top of the guttering to
roll towards the blocks.
• 4. Count how many move or fall down.
• 5. Build the bricks again in a different way (another bond) in
the same spot and try again. Find the strongest way to build
the bricks.

Falls
easily

Priya
G.Nath
Doesn’t
fall easily!!

So this
arrangement of
bricks has more
strength!
Priya
G.Nath
Lets expLore
How many bricks are needed for the
front side of the wall?

6x7=42 bricks

Priya
G.Nath

If the breadth of the room requires 3 bricks ,can you guess
the number of the bricks approximately needed for that wall?
Now you can find the total number of bricks (approx)
needed for the four walls too!
To check your answer, click here
Number of bricks needed is 3
So 7 layers of 3 bricks is 7 times 3 = 21 bricks
No. of bricks needed for 4 walls:
42 + 21 + 42 + 21= 126 bricks
7x3=21

6x7=42 bricks
This is
interesting!
6x7=42 bricks
7x3=21
Priya
G.Nath
Answer these
1. If one brick weighs 6 kg, what will
be the weight of 5 such bricks?
2. If 400 bricks costs Rs.8000,find
the cost of 200 bricks.

Priya
G.Nath

Check your answer here
Check your answer here
6 kg
6 kg

6 kg
6 kg

6 kg
6 kg

1 brick = 6 kg
So, 5 bricks = (6+6+6+6+6)kg = 5 x 6kg = 30 kg

The cost of 400 bricks = Rs.8000
As 200 bricks is half of 400 bricks, the cost will also be half.
So, the cost of 200 bricks is Rs.8000 ÷ 2 = Rs.4000
