1. Letter of Recommendation for Kathleen Barlow
April 2014
It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Kathy Barlow. Kathy and I worked
together for five years as peers and colleagues, and, until she left Indiana Tech, was my direct
report. I have the highest respect for Kathy as a talented and committed professor at Indiana
Institute of Technology and as a fine person. I am disappointed that Kathy left our Institution, but
her personal decision to move on will result in growth in her career and exciting new challenges.
Dr. Barlow is one of our unique professors. While most college professors work on delivering
relevant content to students, Kathy makes every effort to connect with students and demonstrate
the beauty and relevance of humanities, art, English, and music to enrich their lives. Her passion
for these courses prompts students to gain a higher understanding and love of humanities.
Kathy uses many methods to deliver her courses. She doesn’t just talk about art; she holds
classes at the Art Museum in the evening. She is welcomed by the museum and has a classroom
reserved for our students. They can take tours around the museum to experience art, rather than
reading about it. She meets with her music classes at a Jazz club one class night during the
session, to bring the music alive in its own world. These enriching activities are only done
because Kathy goes out of her way to make the learning experience both relevant and enjoyable
for all students.
Her success is measured by the wonderful evaluations given to Kathy by her students. She brings
real learning to her students and they routinely comment about how much they loved her classes.
All of us at Indiana Tech agreed that Kathy is a top-notch educator.
In addition to her academic contributions in the classroom, Kathy has been a valuable resource
supporting the efforts of our committees. Her insights into the fields of Humanities have enabled
us to maintain currency in our programs and accreditation for our school. She is a skilled
administrator and a pleasure to work with. She is a gracious and giving person.
If I can help by offering any further information about Kathy’s candidacy, please contact me.
Respectfully,
