AKCE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GRAPHS AND
COMBINATORY: A BIBLIOMETRIC STUDY
Mr. V.Senthur velmurugan
Librarian (n- CARDMATH) in Department of Library & Information Science in Kalasalingam
University of Krishnankovil, Tamilnadu
ABSTRACT
This study aims at analyzing the research output performance of AKCE International
journal of Graph theory and combinatorics. The analysis cover mainly the number of articles,
year wise authorship pattern, geographical distribution of articles, forms of documents cited, year
wise reference, subject wise distribution of articles etc.
Keywords: Bibliometics, Scientometics, Graph Theory, Combinatorics, etc.
INTRODUCTION
The terms bibliometrics and scientometrics were almost simultaneously introduced by
Pritchard and by Nalimov and Mulchenko in 1969. While Pritchard explained the term
bibliometrics as “the application of mathematical and statistical methods to books and other
media of communication”, Nalimov and Mulchenko defined scientometrics as “the application
Of those quantitative methods which are dealing with the analysis of science viewed as an
Information process”. According to these interpretations the speciality scientometrics is
Restricted to the measurement of science communication, whereas bibliometrics is designed to
Deal with more general information processes.

DEFINITION AND MEANINGS
Bibliometrics divided into two words Biblio Latin/Greek Word ‘Books’ Metrics
Latin/Greek Words ‘Measurement’. Bibliometrics to denote application of mathematical and
statistical methods to book. This is called as a quantitative analysis.According to Hawkins
(1977) defined bibliometrics as “ the application of quantitative analysis in the bibliographic
references of the body of literature” The British Standard Institution (1976) described the
same bibliometrics as the “application of mathematical and statistical methods in the study of
the use of documents and statistical methods in the study of the use of documents and
publication patterns”.
LIMITATION OF BIBLIOMETRICS
1. More formula oriented.
2.Bibliometric study does not include the informal publications and communications.
Therefore, the scientific development cannot be predicted properly
3. The bibliometrical references, which are taken for citation analysis study, are not always
standardized. This causes problem while ranking the authors on the basis of the frequency of
their getting citations.
4. For example, the author S.R. Ranganathan has been cited variously as Siyali Ramamrita
Ranganathan , S. Ranganathan and S. R. Ranganathan. This may cause scattering of citations
of same person-works.
5. At the same time it may also happen that there may be more than one author under the
same name and it may be difficult to distinguish them.
THE THREE “COMPONENTS” OF PRESENT-DAY BIBLIOMETRICS
Present-day bibliometric research is aimed at the following three main target-groups
that clearly determine topics and sub-areas of “contemporary bibliometrics”.
(i) Bibliometrics for bibliometricians (Methodology)
This is the domain of basic bibliometric research and is traditionallyfunded by the
usual grants. Methodological research is conducted mainly in this domain.
(ii) Bibliometrics for scientific disciplines (Scientific information)
The researchers in scientific disciplines form the bigger, but also themost diverse
interest-group in bibliometrics. Due to their primaryscientific orientation, their interests are
strongly related to theirspeciality. This domain may be considered an extension of scienc
information by metric means. Here we also find joint borderlandwith quantitative research in
information retrieval.

(iii) Bibliometrics for science policy and management (science policy)
This is the domain of research evaluation, at present the mostimportant topic in the
field. Here the national, regional, andinstitutional structures of science and their comparative
presentationare in the foreground.
Bibliometrics is a type of research method used in library and information science. It
is a quantitative study of various aspects of literature on a topic and is used to identify the
pattern of publications authorship and secondary journal coverage with the objective of
getting an insight into the dynamics of growth of knowledge in the areas under consideration.
The adoption of bibliometrics techniques in various disciplines stimulate stunning growth of
literature on bibliometrics and its related areas.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The objective of the present study were:
1.yearwise distribution of the articles
2.authorship pattern of the articles
3.average number of references per articles
4.to study the subject coverage of articles
5.geographical distribution of the articles.
AKCE JOURNAL
AKCE International journal of graphs and combinatorics is devoted to publication of
standard original research papers in combinatorial mathematics and related areas. The fields
covered to the journal include graphs and hyper graphs, networks theory, combinatorial
optimization, coding theory, block design, combinatorial geometry, matroid theory, logic,
computing, neural networks, etc. each volume will consists of two issues to be published in
the months of June and December every year.
METHODOLOGY
The issues of the AKCE International journal of graphs and combinatorics from the
year 2004 to 2010 have been taken into consideration for the study.
ANALYSIS
The total number of 111 contributions during the period 2004 – 2010 has been recorded for
the present study.

Table 9 reveals that the articles have emanated from above 20 countries. The
geographical distribution of articles has been decided basing the address of the first authors.
From the analysis it is observed that the highest number of publications are from INDIA (ie) 17 (
15.32% ). Net comes JAPAN with 16 articles ( 14.41 % ) followed by USA with 15 articles (
13.51%) and OTHER COUNTRIES with 12 articles ( 10.81%).

Length of the papers 19 ( 17.12% ) ranged from one to five pages. Length of the majority
of the papers 38 ( 34.23% ) ranged from 11 to 15 pages. Thirty six ( 32.43% ) papers had length
from more than 15 pages.
SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE AKCE JOURNAL
The special features of the articles of the AKCE journal articles are as follows:
1.all the articles include references that follow a standard pattern.
2.almost all the articles include an abstract and keywords in English.
3.the contributors biodata with address and affiliation are also given.
4. the details like date, month and year of receipt of the article are also provide in each article.
CONCLUSION
The journal has published 111 articles during the period of study 2004 to 2010.The
present study reveals the highest number of articles have appeared in the area of graphs
,hypergraphs. The journal publishes on an average of 16 articles per yearmaximum number of
articles were contributed by two author and more than two authors of the total articles.Almost all
articles included a brief abstract and keywords. Most of the articles have emanated from
academic institutions . Inclusion of charts, diagrams, photos and tables in each articles indicates
the articles are highly technical in nature. The number of articles in the journal is not consistent
and various from volume to volume. The journal references on an average of 182 reference per
year.length of the majority of the papers 38 ( 34.23% ) ranged from 11 to 15 pages.The
geographical distribution of articles has been decided basing the address of the first authors.
From the analysis it is observed that the highest number of publications are from india (ie) 17 (
