Mass media includes newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the internet. They communicate messages to large numbers of people and serve four main functions: providing news, interpreting and commenting on news, spreading culture and education, and offering entertainment. Mass media can be government-owned and controlled or privately owned, with government-controlled media often used for propaganda to promote government opinions and interests.
