1. ZIKA virus infection in pregnancy

There is an outbreak of ZIKV (ZIKA virus) infection in the Americas, Caribbean and South
Pacific. The infection is spread mainly by Aedes mosquitoes, although a small number of cases from
sexual transmission have been reported. The wide distribution of the mosquito, combined with the
lack of immunity in the population, has led to rapid evolution of the outbreak. World Health Day,
celebrated on 7 April, marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization
(WHO) in 1948. This year, vector-borne diseases which are transmitted mainly by bites of vectors
such as mosquitoes, ticks and sandflies are highlighted as a global public health priority.
In addition, clusters of cases of brain anomalies and microcephaly in some areas with known
ZIKV transmission have been reported. This increased number of children with microcephally has led
to a high level of concern among pregnant women living in or travelling to endemic areas.
Indonesia as the tropical and coastal country has its own potential environment to be rapid
expansion of Zika infection. It look much faster than many factors regarding the virus remained
obscure. While long term definite of this phenomena needed largely, health authorities and
specially scientist who bent on making discovery will be required seriously.
With the current uncertainty regarding many aspects of the diagnosis and clinical course of
ZIKV infection in pregnancy, potentially valuable information may be obtained by ultrasound
practitioners that may help in counseling pregnant women.
In turn, it further improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of ZIKV infection in
pregnancy. Base on this point of view, ISUOG (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and
Gynecology) Interim Guidance on ultrasound in pregnancy has been set up recently
