4. Crude oil fell for a third day in New York, extending a two-week slump of 9.8 percent, on signs global demand for
gasoline is slowing and stockpiles increasing. U.S. gasoline and diesel inventories last week rose more than
expected, the Energy Department said in a report yesterday. India and Malaysia raised fuel prices today, joining
Indonesia and Taiwan in moves that may cut Asian demand and slow growth. Crude oil for July delivery declined
as much as 69 cents, or 0.6 percent, to $121.61 a barrel. Yesterday, oil dropped $2.01, or 1.6 percent, to settle
at $122.30, the lowest close since May 6. Futures, which reached a record $135.09 on May 22, are up 86 percent
from a year ago.
Copper declined for a fourth day in Asia as the U.S. dollar held near a two-week high against the euro, reducing
investor demand for the metal as a currency hedge. Copper has fallen more than 11 percent from a record
$8,880 a ton April 17 on speculation consumption growth may slow and as the dollar advanced. The metal priced
in dollars tends to fall when the currency gains as the metal becomes more expensive in other currencies. The
dollar rose after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said increasing inflation expectations are a
“significant concern,'' raising bets of a rate hike.
RM seed futures in NCDEX have traded weak towards the closing bell. The arrival of southwest monsoon induced
the expectation of increased crop in the coming season and influenced the prices. Fall in crude oil price also
weighed on RM seed futures. In the spot market at Jaipur, RM seed was quoted at Rs. 601.80, down Rs1.50 for
20Kg.
Pepper futures on NCDEX have traded green due to fresh buying interest at the lower levels after the recent
correction. Arrivals to the spot market were limited due to the lower prices. Farmers are expecting better prices
due to the short supply worldwide. In NCDEX, trades have been limited as major players remain sidelined.
In the benchmark Kochi spot market pepper was quoted at Rs 14396 per quintal.
