volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity
that breeds a sense of insecurity.
To add to that, only 10-15% of doctoral graduates
can count on long term careers in research.
The new economy brings new
opportunities that differ from the

Cultural and communicational divides exist
between different parts of society including
between industry and academia.
Researchers spent large part of their life in
academia, and often disassociate with business.
.
Biggest demand in the new economy is for experts
that can empathize and collaborate effectively
across diversity – multidisciplinary, multicultural,
and across the boundaries of industry and
academia. That will continue to be a competence
in very high demand in the years ahead.

Although much emphasis is put lately on the wider
social, cultural, economic and environmental
impact of research, most researchers remain
focused on the number and quality of their research
publications and much less on their realization
thereafter.
The demand in the new economy will be for
researchers that use a systems approach
and get a sense of achievement from the
whole realization of knowledge and
intellectual property rather than just
publications.

Cultural and communications divides tend to impair
industry-research partnerships due to the
discovery-driven culture of researchers and the
innovation-driven environment of business.
In most cases there is a lack of incentives and
structures for researchers to bridge that gap.
It is often at the junction of disciplines that
innovation occurs. Researchers who learn to
think and act across the cultural and
communications divide of academia and industry
are able to work harmoniously with diverse
stakeholders and bridge the gap between their
interests. Such researchers are in high demand.

To add to that, only 10-15% of doctoral graduates can count on long term careers in research. The new economy brings new opportunities that differ from the classical career paths of researchers. Researchers spent large part of their life in academia, and often disassociate with business. . Biggest demand in the new economy is for experts that can empathize and collaborate effectively across diversity – multidisciplinary, multicultural, and across the boundaries of industry and academia. The demand in the new economy will be for researchers that use a systems approach and get a sense of achievement from the whole realization of knowledge and intellectual property rather than just publications. In most cases there is a lack of incentives and structures for researchers to bridge that gap. It is often at the junction of disciplines that innovation occurs. Researchers who learn to think and act across the cultural and communications divide of academia and industry are able to work harmoniously with diverse stakeholders and bridge the gap between their interests.
