Visual and Sound Installation
By . Omang.S.P.Kilano
2. Description:
A visual and sound installation, showing distractions that lead
to road accidents in urban areas.
Problem Identification :
We hear about accidents everyday , and not much is done
about it , because if something was done then we wouldn’t
have this issue. The aim of the application is to encourage
and educate the public on road safety.
Target Audience:
17 and above
3. Aims and objectives
Awareness for the general public “those eligible to drive” on the
dangers and causes of road accidents in Urban Areas.
-study the causes of road accidents
-to compare urban area road accidents to those of rural areas
-to broaden the public’s knowledge on these causes
Motivation
You probably know of someone who has lost his life in a car
accident , and if you had the chance to sit them down
before they got into the car you would. So with this project
I am just trying to reach out to many people and hopefully
get a 100 percent accident free nation.
4. Ryoji Ikeda
Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966 in Gifu , Japan) is a
Japanese sound artist who lives and works in
Paris. Ikeda's music is concerned primarily
with sound in a variety of "raw" states, such
as sine tones and noise, often using
frequencies at the edges of the range of
human hearing.
5. Transfinite
Following critically acclaimed
installations by Ernesto Neto and
Christian Boltanski, Ryoji Ikeda has been
selected by the Armory for its third
annual visual art commission in the
Wade Thompson Drill Hall. Ikeda creates
a visual and sonic environment where
visitors are submerged in an extreme
illustration of projected and
synchronized data. His work uses scale,
light, shade, volume, shadow, electronic
sounds, and rhythm to flood the senses.
In choreographing vast amounts of
digital information, Ikeda conjures up a
transformative environment in which
visitors confront data on a scale that
defies comprehension, experiencing the
infinite.
6. Road Awareness
Its up to you how you interpret this poster, i
find it very interesting. I like how they used the
Tires, the do not cross line and the chalk marks
on the road. It shows the danger caused by cars
and what it leads to. It also has text at the
bottom , which say's " Your destiny is in your
hands" simply meaning that the choices you
make on the roads will have an effect on your
life. You are to blame and only you can make a
difference.
7. Crushed Can representing a crushed
car. The concept it pretty simply yet very
effective. To make it very convincing the
took the shot of the picture at its lowest
angle so that it appears bigger and
actually look more like a car. It might be
also interpreted in a different way, one
might say cars are crushed as easy as
you could crush a can.

9. Idea Development
In the space I will be given , I will setup a projector and speakers .
It will be a walk in admire type of scene.
The screen will be showing visuals of pre recorded interviews of road accident
survivors. As they will be telling their stories some images and visuals of car
accidents will be showing behind them.
After the interviews, I will have a city soundscape with all the distractions that
cause road accidents.
Imagine, club noises , city lights, cellphones ringing , ambulance siren, and all the
chaos you can think off in the city.
So as the sounds of all these places will be playing, lights will also play to reflect
that.
10. Interviews
This part , I will have survivors of
real car accidents tell their
stories and how their accidents
came about. At the end they will
all give a positive message , for
safety.
14. Floor Plan
This is a simple diagram of how
the installation setup will be.
Where by using a laptop to control
the projector and speakers which
will be displaying the contents. A
surround speaker system will be
necessary because sound plays a
vital role. And the only way for a
user to experience the feeling I
intend on bring , they need to
hear and feel the sound from all
corners of the room.

17. Final Synopsis
The death toll caused by road accidents can not be ignored, it is at a high and will only come down if we do
something about it. That is why I as an artist , decided to make an installation that would help change the
situation from worse to better. The idea is to have an installation that will move the audience , they will have
to go home and remember it, because that is the only way they will apply the lessons being delivered to them.
Urban area , the place I am focusing on, is a place that is mostly densely populated and with that comes many
problems. We will be focusing more on road accidents and their causes. City lights, overcrowding of people
and cars, bad road, cell phone usage while driving and not following road signs because everyone is in a rush
are all causes of the gruesome accidents , but many of us take those for granted . That is the reason I came up
this installation, to try and highlight these distractions so that people can try avoid them.
In my installation, there will be interviews of people who have been in accidents, and they will be telling their
stories of how they came about and at the end give a message that will touch the audience. After the
interviews I will then focus of the sounds that I will have collected from around the city , and I will mix them
with lights so as to represent the city life. These lights will act as the distractions together with cell phone
sounds . In short this installation will give you the feeling of the city, even if you are not in the city.
