The document describes several December traditions in Sweden. Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas and involves lighting additional candles each week. On December 13th, Lucia is celebrated, commemorating a German tradition of a girl dressed in white with candles in her hair. Christmas celebrations in Sweden typically begin on the first Advent and include a Christmas breakfast, meeting with family, watching Donald Duck at 3PM, having Christmas dinner at 5PM, and receiving gifts from Santa around 6-7PM. New Year's Eve involves celebrating the upcoming year with friends or family, eating a nice dinner, and watching fireworks at midnight.
2. Advent
Advent means arrival and is actually the period of about four weeks which is a
preparation time before Christmas. Advent is celebrated four sundays before christmas
eve. Advent is celebrated all the sundays after that. Every sunday we light one candle
more, at first advent we light one candle and then the week after we light one more.
When we then celebrate the last advent we have light up four candles. First advent varies
in date but is always on a Sunday. First advent varies between November 27 and
December 3.
3. Lucia 13 december
Lucia is a Saint’s day. Until 1753 in sweden we counted days differently so then december 13 was
the darkest day of the year. People thought that this night was dangerous so to protect yourself you
didn’t fall asleep. In Germany there was a tradition where a girl dressed up as a Jesus-child. She had
candles in her hair which would represent a gloria. In Sweden we started with a similar tradition
where a woman would dress in white clothes and candles in the hair. The woman would go around
and hand out food to people. In the beginning of 1900 this tradition spread all over Sweden. From
the beginning Lucia came by herself or with one or two people. After a while we started celebrating
with a procession where the lucia goes first and everyone follows. Now Lucia almost never goes
alone, after her comes other girl with white clothes and glitter in their hair and boys with funny hats,
but also people with gingerbread costumes and as santas.
4. Christmas in Sweden
The Christmas celebrations in Sweden usually starts with the first Advent in the end of November. Some
people like mine have adopted english traditions. So on the Christmas morning we start with to check out
our christmas socks, if we have got some small christmas gifts. Then we go
downstairs to eat some christmas breakfast. It depends but often the christmas breakfast is
Christmas ham, porridge, Wort bread, hot chocolate, gluhwein. And also other things like an
ordinary breakfast. After that are we going to meet our family, cousins, grandpa, grandmas and Aunts. In
sweden we have an tradition that called for Donald Duck that we look at 3PM. We also eat Christmas
dinner at 5PM,we eat meatballs, prince sausage, beetroot salad, Jansson's temptation, Christmas
Ham, Julmust, Salad. Around 6PM
- 7PM Santa Claus is coming and give us Christmas gifts, at the same
Santa is here we also eat snacks like : gingerbread
cookies, saffron buns, Julmust, chocolate, candy caramels
and much more. This is usually the Swedish tradition,
some familys also play the christmas game and dance around the christmas tree.
7. After the breakfast most families go to church and
sing songs. This is the church in our town Mölndal in
gothenburg. After the church its time for lunch.
8. . At 3 o’clock we watch donald duck. And after
that many families just relax or open the rest of
the presents.
9. In the evening many families play a game
where some of them buy a present and
then people try getting that present
through throwing a dice (or drawing
cards) and if you get a 1 or 6 you can
steal a present from someone.
10. The day after Christmas some families
meet relatives and celebrate Christmas
even more or just relax.
12. “Julbord”
In Sweden we serve small dishes, and all of them mixed
together gives an amazing taste of Christmas. We
usually eat a lot and after it we open our presents and
dances around the Christmas tree. .
13. Typical Meals on the “Julbord”:
Christmas ham
Meatballs Herring Potatoes prinskorv
julmust, a typical drinkrice pudding
14. “Prinskorv”
“Prinskorv” is a sausage but it's
sliced at the the ends so it looks
like a crown. That's why it's called
“prinskorv” which translates to
“prince sausage” in English. We eat
it a lot in Sweden on Christmas and
Christmas is now complete without
the “prinskorv”
16. “Lussebullar” (Saffron Buns)
A traditional pastry we usually eat in Sweden is
“Lussebullar”, or saffron buns. It’s a wheat bun with
saffron in it formed like an “S”, the saffron is what
makes it special and yellow. Saffron is really expensive
and hard to make so not everyone wants to make
“Lussebullar” because of it.
17. Gingerbread
In Sweden it's a tradition to bake ginger breads
together with your a family in Christmas.
Ginger bred house is also something you can build
with your family or friends on Christmas. It's fun and
you can put as much glace and candy on it as you
like.
18. New years eve
The last day of the year is on 31 December. You celebrate it to enter the new
year. It means that you can start at a new beginning, you have 365 days to do and
see new things. You always shoot rockets on new year when the clock is turning
12. You can celebrate it with friends or with your family. Then you can eat some
good food and snacks. In sweden you have a tradition to eat oxfile.
You also drink champagne
20. Sweden, the Northern European country, celebrates New Year on January.
The majority of swedish people like to spend their New Year with friends. They
don’t mind Christmas celebrations being an old-fashioned family affair, but New
Year is nowadays supposed to international and modern.
21. The new year's eve celebration
The new years eve begins like a ordinary day just you have a special
feeling. It is first in dawn we start celebrate the new upcoming year with
going a place that is high up so you can see the fireworks on the other side
of the river (in gothenburg). We (the most) are dressing up put on the most
noble clothes we have, because we often go to a party with friend and
family.
We eat three course dinner. (there is nothing special about the new years
eve). Food it is just little bit more noble then a ordinary party). But after the
dinner it's soon time for a new year. Then some people turn on their
television to watch a program which is sent every year but with a new host
every year, the tell a poem. But the poem is the same every year doh. When
the poem is told it is a new year and fireworks i fire in 360 degrees around
you.
22. The day after new year
- Order the most pizza
- Important day for all the pizza restaurants
-
