Chapin will never forget.

Biography:
Hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games was a milestone event
for Vancouver and BC. With an IT infrastructure supporting the Games that is
to a scale few organizations ever encounter. Responsible for overseeing the
deployment, operations and dismantlement of this complex environment was
Ward Chapin, Chief Information Officer for the Vancouver 2010 Organizing
Committee (VANOC). By successfully managing this major technology
deployment, Ward Chapin significantly grew the reputation of BC's technology,
its talent and most of all, the province itself.
2. As the CIO, Chapin and his team were responsible for managing all of the VANOC business systems
and the systems supporting the logistics of the Games such as accreditation, accommodation,
security and transportation, including key integrations with immigration and security officials.
Chapin's team was also responsible for the coordination of timing and scoring systems and for
working with broadcasters to deliver their technical requirements. However, Chapin's biggest
achievement was not the actual implementation and operation of the technology; but his ability to
identify and recruit the required talent and use his leadership skills to create a productive, effective
and motivated team.
Clients of VANOC's IT infrastructure included nearly 7,000 athletes and officials, 50,000 workforce
members, 10,800 media personnel and 3.5 billion TV viewers. In total 275 million visitors came to
www.vancouver2010.com, shattering the record of 105 million for the much larger Beijing 2008
Summer Games. With a $350M budget, 3,200 staff, several IT partners, and technology distributed
over 120 sites, Chapin's team delivered a project that ran on-time, on-budget and with zero
significant glitches.
A longtime executive with HSBC Bank, Chapin built a progressive career with the financial services
company in Canada and abroad. Prior to joining VANOC, he was responsible for Information
Technology Operations for the HSBC Investment Bank in London, England. He also spent more than
three years in Paris as Director of IT Operations, assisting with the integration of HSBC's acquisition
of CCF Bank, a federation of 11 banks. During his tenure with HSBC Bank Canada, Chapin served
as Vice President, Technical and Corporate Services, and also held various IT-related roles in
information systems auditing, systems development and IT operations.
Chapin began his career in audit while at Montreal Trust, moving on to operational and information
systems positions for CitiBank, Toronto Dominion Bank and Bank of BC.
Raised in Montreal, where he learned to speak French, Chapin graduated from McGill University
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Relations. He and his wife now live in Vancouver.
