4. The Facts
• In the 2011/12 the Government will invest a record £1.4
billion in Apprenticeships. This will be used to support
over 600,000 Apprentices in learning and up to
400,000 starts.
• There has been an estimated 85% growth in
Apprenticeships starts over the past 2 years.
• In 2010/11 30,000 more workplaces took on
Apprentices, compared to 2009/10, 50% of these for
the first time. There are around 150,000 employers in
England with Apprentices.
• Record success rates (reached 75.5% in 2010/11)
5. What is an Apprenticeship ?
An apprenticeship consists of 4 elements:
Competency based qualification
A competencies qualification which must be achieved by
the apprentice to qualify for an Apprenticeship
Certificate, and which is the qualification required to
demonstrate competence in performing the skill, trade
or occupation to which the framework relates.
Knowledge based qualification
The qualification required to demonstrate achievement of
the technical skills, knowledge and understanding of
theoretical concepts and knowledge understanding of
the industry and its market relevant to the skill, trade or
occupation to which the framework relates.

6. Apprenticeship key Facts
• Apprentices are employees within a company and are
paid a wage.
• All apprentices receive training for a specific job and
gain recognised qualifications.
• The apprenticeship programme will last a minimum of
12 months.

7. Apprenticeship Key Facts
• The training for 16 – 18 year old apprentices is fully
funded by the Government.
• The minimum apprentice wage is £2.60 an hour. From
1st October 2012 this will change to £2.65 per hour.
• There are nearly 250 frameworks and over 1,200 job
roles available to apprentices.
• Over 100,000 employers in over 160,00 workplaces in
England offer Apprenticeships.
• Apprenticeship, Advanced Apprenticeship and Higher
Apprenticeship.
