  8. 8. training THE VALUE OF Vocational education and training is a system of education and training which has been designed around specific industries and job roles. Courses are practical and focus on the skills and knowledge required for people to enter a profession and perform at an efficient and effective level. Organisations are increasingly looking towards vocational education and training in favor of university education, as vocational training provides participants with more practical and relevant skills rather than theoretical knowledge which are often only loosely related to their job role. The growing need for training Training is critically important for organisational development and success. Training enables companies to become more efficient, productive, service enabled and to stay ahead of their competition, whilst also making employees feel more valued and secure in their job. In today’s highly competitive and global business climate, companies looking to improve their profit margins and increase productivity need to find effective ways to boost employee performance. Vocational education and training can deliver significant improvements to a number business areas which are directly impacted by employee skills and knowledge, including: ●● Stricter adherence to corporate policies ●● Improved customer satisfaction ●● Increased employee morale and retention ●● 8 Increased productivity and performance improvement ●● Increased revenue
  9. 9. QUICK FACTS 1 -7% for non-training companies. The high cost of not training Some organisations view training as an unnecessary expense, when in reality the investment in training is often much smaller than the cost of failing to adequately maintain staff or deliver vital project and services. Cost categories may include: ●● Rework ●● IT/help desk support Training also affects employee retention. According to the American Society for Training Development, 41% of employees at companies with inadequate training programs plan to leave within a year versus 12% of employees at companies who provide excellent training and professional development programs. Vocationally trained workers are typically 6-11% more productive than academically educated workers. 3 Co-worker distraction ●● 2 Increased down time ●● The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) +24% for training companies and is Every $1 spent much as $30on training can yield as in productivity gains over 3 years. 4 In a 40% many industries there is high productivity gap between and low performing employees. 5 Most less of companies commithoursthan 1% total employment to training activities. 6 A in training doubled investmentin excess ofcan result in growth rates 300% of the industry average. 7 Strategic trainingand ongoing investment in can reduce: ●● Staff turnover by 25-75% ●● Time-to-hire by 50-75% ●● Cost-to-hire by 70% 9

The United States of America spend almost 16% of their GDP on healthcare today, and if historical trends continue this could be nearly a quarter of their GDP in 2040. Despite experiencing a current nurse shortage, America reports a ratio of 773 nurses to 100,000 population. This is a stark contrast to Uganda, for example, who report a ratio of approximately 6 nurses per 100,000 population. Clearly, the issue of defining, measuring and addressing nursing shortages has to take into account the huge disparity in the current availability of nursing skills in different countries, sectors and regions. Furthermore, the lack of access to healthcare in many countries is likely to encourage a growing number of established pharmaceutical, healthcare and medical technology companies to open clinics in the developing world. There are significant efficiencies which can be realized in the Healthcare and Community Services sectors through better training and education. 38. 38. model OUR Careers Australia has developed an industry leading model for the rollout of corporate and customized training services. Building Solid Platforms for Education Many developing countries doubled their GDP per capita in the last 15 years, meaning they are experiencing economic growth roughly ten times faster than the industrial revolution. This means they have a real need to address vocational training differently than western countries that have been developing over a much longer time. Even established markets, however, have expectations of progressive vocational education and training such as: ●● ●● Offload some or all of administration duties from employees by outsourcing these tasks to qualified training services suppliers that specialize in the range of processes entailed in enterprise-wide training programs. ●● It’s virtually impossible to shave costs and simultaneously increase training efficiency without having the proper metrics and reporting structure in place to determine where and how effectively money is being spent, continuously measure and monitor all facets of their training to ensure maximum return on investment and proper alignment with their company’s business strategies. ●● 38 Consolidation and streamlining processes—namely, integrating all training functions into a single and more efficient reporting structure. To capture future growth and to help our clients to secure profit from an increasingly complex cost pressured and shifting industry landscape, we recognize that we cannot simply rely on traditional educational toolboxes.

  42. 42. accreditation OUR AUSTRALIAN QUALIFICATIONS FRAMEWORK AUSTRALIAN STUDENT TUITION ASSURANCE SCHEME Careers Australia courses and qualifications are nationally recognized and internationally transferrable under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Careers Australia offers Australian Student Tuition Assurance (ASTAS) to protect the upfront fees paid by Australian students or foreign students studying in Australia. ASTAS ensures that any Australian student displaced from a course, due to our inability to continue the course, will be relocated efficiently and with minimal disruption to a comparable course with another approved provider. The AQF provides a comprehensive, nationally consistent framework for all qualifications in postcompulsory education and training in Australia. In the vocational education and training sector it assists national consistency for all trainees, learners, employers and providers by enabling national recognition of qualifications and Statements of Attainment. AUSTRALIAN SKILLS QUALITY AUTHORITY Careers Australia courses and qualifications are accredited and audited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). ASQA is the national regulator for Australia’s vocational education and training sector with a mandate to ensure nationally approved quality standards are met. 43. 43. glossary OUR APPRENTICESHIP / TRAINEESHIP A structured training arrangement for a person employed under an Apprenticeship / Traineeship training contract. It usually involves the person receiving training gradually and being assessed both on and off the job over a number of years. COURSE A Course is a complete body of prescribed studies constituting a curriculum, which results in the issuing of a Qualification or Statement of Attainment. We have simplified the way courses are described in this document, for people who are unfamiliar with the Australian Qualifications Framework. SHORT COURSE Short Courses typically only contain one or two Units of Competency to deliver highly specific and granular skills or knowledge. These can be delivered in a few hours or over a number of days. FOUNDATION COURSE QUALIFICATION Foundation Courses equip participants with basic functional skills and knowledge to commence entry level roles. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework these courses are described as Certificate I or Certificate II. A Qualification is the result of an accredited complete program of learning that leads to formal certification. INTERMEDIATE COURSE Intermediate Courses equip participants with theoretical and practical knowledge suitable for skilled roles. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework these courses are described as Certificate III or Certificate IV which include Trade and Traineeships. ADVANCED COURSE Advanced Courses equip participants with specialised knowledge and skills for highly skilled or paraprofessional roles and further academic focused learning. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework these courses are described as Diploma or Advanced Diploma. STATEMENT OF ATTAINMENT A Statement of Attainment provides a complete record of Units of Competency that have been undertaken by a student, which includes the final result for each respective unit. UNIT OF COMPETENCY A Unit of Competency is a single component of a qualification, or a stand-alone unit, that has been accredited by the same process as for a whole Course. A Unit of Competency will often be referred to by other names, such as an ‘accredited unit’, ‘module’, ‘subject’, or ‘unit’. 43
