this three-part documentary by the famous Middle East war
correspondent Robert Fisk was banned by the
Discovery channel in 1993. The films seek to explain the rise of
anti-Western sentiment throughout the
“Muslim world” (from the Middle East to the Balkans, the range
of the former Ottoman Empire) by
highlighting the oppressiveness of Western-supported
governments (Israel and Egypt, in particular) and the
West's broader anti-Muslim racism. The Discovery channel
pulled the films in response to a letter campaign
by pro-Israel groups. Examples of these lobbying efforts by
pro-Israel groups (and correspondence with the
Discovery channel) at the following:

Part I: The Martyr's Smile (52 minutes): This section focuses
its capable eye on Lebanon's guerilla war that
aims to liberate southern Lebanon from Israeli control. The
scope of this tragic conflict is brought into sharp
focus in this documentary through the use of extensive
interviews with participants from the Hezbollah and
Islamic Jihad movements, views of civilian casualties caused by
Israeli air attacks, and photographic
evidence of the ongoing destruction of life and property in the
region. The viewer should be advised that
this film contains some disturbing scenes of this conflict.
Part II: The Road to Palestine (51 minutes): This section
provides the viewer with a glimpse into the
ongoing conflict in the region around Jerusalem and the Gaza
Strip. Through interviews with members of
the militant Islamic group Hamas, as well as Zionist settlers and
Jewish refugees, this documentary
succeeds at revealing some of this tragic situation.
Part III: To the Ends of the Earth (51 minutes): This section
compares the plight of Muslims in Egypt and
Bosnia. Though separated by geography and the distinct
cultures in which they live their lives, this film
reveals the feeling of betrayal by the West experienced by these
two Muslim communities. Interviews with
Islamic freedom fighters and war casualties shed light on the
dynamics of the ongoing struggle for the
survival of these communities.

True Islam (38 min)
On-Line at: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/true-islam/
Synopsis: In medieval times, the unwavering belief that the
world was flat led to
riots, isolation, and even death to those who dared to contest
this fallacy.
Misconceptions and myths can be dangerous. Today, this same
ignorance and
intolerance has led to a backlash against Islam and Muslims.
Support should be
provided for the spread of “True Islam”, which is a religion of
love, friendship, peace
and brotherhood, and for its true understanding.
What the Ancient Did for Us: The Islamic World – (58 min)
On-Line at: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/islamic-world/
Synopsis: The rise of Islam is one of the most important events
in world history. In
the 7th century, Mohammed’s intention was to unite the divided
Arabs through a
new religion. A century after his death, he’d succeeded in
producing a medieval
superpower. The Arabs and Moors had spread through Spain
towards the Pyrenees.
This program explores the Muslim contribution to the western
world – in art,
architecture, astronomy, medicine, science, and learning. The
early Muslims are credited with inventing
distillation and could distil just about anything – from alcohol
to perfume. Hygiene is very important in the
Muslim world so they invented and manufactured soap –
centuries before the West – and hundreds of
bathhouses were built throughout Muslim cities.
An Islamic History of Europe – (90 min.)
On-Line at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfhZR15QRKA

hidden story of Europe’s
Islamic past and looks back to a golden age when European
civilization was enriched
by Islamic learning. He travels across medieval Muslim Europe
to reveal the vibrant
civilization that Muslims brought to the West. This evocative
film reveals the West’s
debt to Islam for its contribution to the Renaissance.

Real Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People – (50 min)
On-line at: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/reel-bad-arabs/
Synopsis: The Arab is a one-dimensional caricature, a cartoon
cutout used by film
makers as stock villains and as comic relief. And so, over and
over, we see Arabs in
movies portrayed as buffoons, their only purpose being to
deliver cheap laughs. This
documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history
that has run virtually
unchallenged from the silent films to today’s biggest Hollywood
blockbusters.

commentary of leading art scholars from around the world, the
film delves into the
art of religious life in Islamic culture and into the secret world
inside the palaces of the elite. From the
extraordinary array of metalwork, textiles, paintings and
architecture that illuminate the culture, filmmaker
Rob Gardner sheds light on the shared histories of western and
Islamic societies, revealing more continuity
than division. Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon narrates.
Not in my Name – 2014 (27 min)
Available on-line at: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/not-in-
my-name/
Synopsis: Takfiris firmly believe that the end justifies the
means. But Islam never
approves of such actions as it never issues such fatwa and their
beliefs are rejected
by almost all prominent contemporary Islamic scholars. As an
Islamic term jihad
means "the struggle for God's sake." It is through jihad that
every Muslim is required
to defend his or her country against any foreign invader. In
recent years the term
has been widely misused in the media to describe bombings,
suicide attacks, or any other sort of aggressive
behavior by extremists. But what exactly is jihad and when
does it become obligatory for Muslims?
Takfirism is an offshoot of Salafism whose followers seek to
get to the origins of Islam, but based on their
own facile and fallacious reading. A little knowledge is a
dangerous thing and that's what Takfiris are
suffering from. Warning: Very graphic content which might be
upsetting to some viewers.

revelatory
documentary that aims to shatter preconceived notions about

Islam even to this
day.

ambitious project, undertaken by the educational content

The Crusades: An Arab Perspective – 2016 (190 min)
Available on-line via:
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/crusades-arab-perspective/
An ambitious four-part documentary produced by Al Jazeera,
The Crusades: An Arab
Perspective features handsome production values, convincing
historical
reenactments and a wealth of revealing information on this
much dissected period
of world history. The Crusades may have come to an end, but
the fight against
Western occupation did not. The final episode considers the
lasting remnants of
these conflicts as it relates to events in their immediate
aftermath all the way to 20th century, including the
formation of the state of Israel in 1948.Sprinkled throughout the
film are enlightening interviews with a
panel of noted historians and academics. Collectively, their
insights serve as a terrific compliment to the
impressive reenactment footage as they work to interpret the
motivations of all involved and to separate
fact from folklore. The Crusades: An Arab Perspective is an
impressive achievement that manages to play
more like a riveting sword and sandals saga than a dry and
studious documentary.

period of
three years, by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, two

The empire in Africa – 2006 (88 min)
Available on-line at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqIK0Rufa3Q
By Philippe Diaz. Focused on the bloody civil war in Sierra
Leone, it is the
perfect rejoinder to those who believe that the West has some
kind of
obligation to provide law and order through a “humanitarian”
military
intervention of the sort that NY Timesman Nicholas Kristof
contributor
calls for in Darfur or that Harvard professor Samantha Powers
called for in
Rwanda. Using interviews with the Revolutionary United Front
(RUF), a rebel group widely
portrayed as the Sierra Leone equivalent of the Janjaweed in
Darfur, as well as supporters of
military intervention against it, Diaz uncovers a rescue mission
much more about rescuing
diamond mining profits than lives. Warning: Contains scenes
which some students may find
disturbing!

Congress leader Oliver Tambo. The
title comes from the lyrics of the Gil Scott-Heron song
“Johannesburg”.
Episode One: The Road to Resistance (1948-64)
As the U.N. adopts the Declaration of Human Rights, South
Africa implements apartheid. A
mass movement is born, then crushed, and Nelson Mandela is

democracy to South Africa.

movement against apartheid and
the brutal suppression of a youth uprising in Soweto galvanizes
public support for sanctions
against South Africa.
Episode Four: Fair Play (1958-81)
With foreign governments reluctant to take action against
apartheid regime, athletes and
activists around the world hit white South Africa on the playing
field. International boycotts
against its sport teams help bring this human right crisis to the
forefront of global attention.
Episode Five: Selma to Soweto (1977-86)
African Americans alter U.S. foreign policy for the first time in
history, successfully pressuring
the U.S. to impose sanctions and politically isolate South
Africa.
Episode Six: The Bottom Line (1965-88)

firms doing business in South Africa
economically isolate the apartheid regime and become the first
successful efforts to use
economic pressure to help bring down a government.
Episode Seven: Free at Last (1979-90)

cumulative world effort to topple
apartheid. Nelson Mandela becomes a household name as the

Has God Forsaken Africa? – 2008 (52 min)
Available at: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/has-god-forsaken-
africa/
Summary: The story of this documentary unfolds in a working-
class
neighborhood in Dakar, Senegal. The director, Musa Dieng
Kala, returns
there to see what happened in a district he grew up in. Twenty
years
have passed since he and his friends dreamt of rebuilding their
land.
Today the young people there dream of a sole opportunity to
leave and
go far away, elsewhere. Deserting Africa is like claiming that
nothing can be accomplished,
established nor enjoyed there. They leave behind an African
youth feeling lost, frustrated and in
despair, yearning to go to the West to escape a seemingly
pointless future. The land, see and
sky become their refuge. Leaving Africa thus becomes a life-
long task - to live elsewhere,
anywhere, but not there.
