Improved Pawpaw Varieties
1. Improved Varieties of Pawpaws
for Virginia โ a new fruit crop well-suited to organic agriculture
โข Virginia Association for Biological Farming, 14th Annual Conference, Feb. 8-9, 2013
2. PAWPAW
A NEW TREE CROP
FOR THE EAST
โข R. Neal Peterson โ The PawPaw Foundation
5. The Pawpaw Is
โข Asimina triloba โ Annonaceae (custard apple family)
โข North Americaโs largest native edible fruit
โข Native to 26 states in the East, Midwest & South
โข Not a papaya โ Brits often call papaya โpaw pawโ
โข A delicious and nutritious fruit โ lots of personality
โข Popular once upon a time โ many places named for it
โข Nowadays very little known by Americans
โข Recently domesticated with superior cultivars
โข Is becoming a new fruit crop
6. Botany: belongs to the Annonaceae family
cousin to the cherimoya and the guanabana
which are popular fruits throughout the tropics
10. Food Qualities
โข Unusual tropical flavor for a temperate fruit.
Tastes similar to cherimoya and guanabana.
Like a combination of banana, mango, pear, pineapple.
Not hard โ a soft texture, custardy, avocado-like.
โข Possesses great nutritional value (better than apple).
โข High in calories (similar to banana).
High in minerals โ K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mg.
Protein level about 2% โ high for a fruit.
A very good balance of the essential amino acids.
โข High in antioxidants
12. Cultural Requirements
โข Humid temperate climate, zones 5-7
โข Moderately acid soils, pH 5.5 โ 7.0
โข Full sun for optimal yields
โข Well-drained soils โ no hard pan
โข Ideally deep fertile soil with good organic matter
โข Freedom from competing vegetation
13. Orchard Layout
โข Flexible spacing
โข 10 ft centers (approx)
โข 18-22 ft row widths
โข Machinery dictates width
โข North-south rows
(usually)
โข Windy sites a problem
โข Wind breaks and barriers
14. Fertilization
โข Similar to other fruit trees
โข N important in early years
โข Roughly 50 lbs of N/acre
โข Extra K during harvest years
โข Foliar tests for micronutrients
โข Requirements probably higher
for S and Mg
15. โข Necessary on ALL but
the most favorable sites
โข Not necessary in normal
rainfall growing season
โข Vital in drought (obvious)
Irrigation
16. Pruning
โข Minimal
โข Central leader
โข Control height
No Ladders. Pick from
the ground level only
โข Open access on sides
โข Maintain shade for fruit
17. Orchard Floor
โข Weed control is essential
Mulching and cultivation for organic farming.
There are no herbicides listed for pawpaw.
In practice we find that Surflan is well
tolerated. Weed control a must.
โข Clean floor management
Clean up windfalls after harvest.
Old fruit harbors fungus attacking skin.
Old fruit can be used for seed to be sold to
seed companies or as biomass for
acetogenins.
โข Pawpaw root suckers
Control by mowing and pruning
18. Insect Pests
โข Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly
Larvae feed on young leaves, cause
slight damage, not an economic pest
โข Japanese Beetles
Problem only some years, younger leaves
โข Pawpaw Peduncle Borer
Larvae consume inner flower parts
and burrow down stem. The adult is
small (5-7 mm). Native w/ predators.
โข Pawpaw Leaf Roller
Webs, rolls & eats leaves in late summer
โข Fruit damage extremely rare
19. Fruit Pests โ
Fungal & Physical
โข Various fungi involved
โข All superficial
โข Do not penetrate flesh
โข Can cause fruit cracking
โข Fruit cracking / cultural
Caused by a long dry spell
followed by plentiful rain
โข Sun scald a problem
But shade protects the fruit
20. the terraced
rice paddies of
southern Appalachia
are often lined or
intercropped with
pawpaws
Well, after global warming!
very compatible
for intercropping
22. Flowering &
Pollination
โข Flowers are perfect
male & female parts in each
โข Fly & beetle pollinated
โข Usually not self fertile
โข Two or more cultivars
required for pollination
23. Fruit Thinning
โข Some cultivars overbear.
Allegheny you must thin
โข Thin to maintain size and
fleshiness.
โข Thin out weak clusters.
Within a strong cluster,
thin to 1, 2 or 3 fruits.
โข A few cultivars tend to 1
or 2 fruits per cluster and
require little thinning.
Shenandoah for example
25. The Harvest Season
โข Ripening season in Virginia is roughly Aug.25 - Oct.1
โข Length of picking from each tree is about 12-20 days
โข Length varies by cultivar, some shorter, some longer.
โข Cultivars are either early, middle, or late. Those with
the best fruit quality are middle and late.
26. Harvest Issues
Subtle unreliable color breaks
Each tree ripens over 2-3 weeks
โข Fragile and perishable
โข Picked largely by feel
โข Daily picking advised
โข Labor intensive
27. Packing
& Storing
โข Refrigeration required
โข 33ยบ to 35ยบF optimal
โข Fruits packed in single
layer flats with proper
cushioning
โข Picked a few days
under ripe, fruit can be
stored about 21 days
and then still finish
ripening properly at
room temperature
29. Overview
โข Too many inferior cultivars are advertised that never
should have been named and propagated
โข Low quality ones are โWilsonโ, โWellsโ, โMitchellโ โฆ
many others. They are not worth buying. One cannot
trust catalog descriptions.
โข Best of the old ones are
โOverleeseโ
โSunflowerโ
โNC-1โ
โPennsylvania Goldenโ (for earliness)
30. My Breeding Program
โข Started in 1981. Ended about 1998.
โข 2 orchards at the University of
Maryland experiment stations
โข Orchards were planted 2 years apart
โข Each orchard was roughly 750 trees
โข Trees were O.P. seedlings from five
historic collections, circa 1926-1950
โข Best collection turned out to be the
Blandy Experimental Farm, in VA
31. Breeding (continued)
โข Seedlings took about 7 years to fruit.
โข Being trees, evaluation over multiple
years is necessary. Ten years maybe?
But do I have time? I went for 3 years.
โข None of the trees that looked best in
year-1 were in the top by year-3.
โข Selected top 9 trees from each orchard.
โข Worked with 10 universities to conduct
a RVT evaluation of pawpaw โ this had
never been done โ my 18 advanced
selections plus 10 known cultivars.
33. Preview โ Best of the new
โข Peterson Pawpaws
โWabashโ, โShenandoahโ, โAlleghenyโ, โSusquehannaโ,
โPotomacโ, #10-35, and others (โRappahannockโ not
consistent however)
โข Kentucky State University
โKSU Atwoodโ and several selections under observation
โข Possibly โMangoโ โGreen River Belleโ โShawnee Trailโ
34. Shenandoah

โข Fleshy - S:F ratio 6%
โข Succulent, custardy texture
โข Most popular at DC farmers
market
โข Responds well to pruning
TM
35. Susquehanna
โข Very fleshy - S:F ratio 3%
โข Very sweet, rich flavor
โข Firm, buttery texture
โข Fruit size very large
โข Moderate yields
โข Responds well to pruning

โข One Green World (OR)
โข Heritage Seedlings (OR)
โข Edible Landscaping Nursery (VA)
โข Don Shadow Nursery (TN)
โข I Have A Handout On These Nurseries With Contact Info
38. Approaches to marketing pawpaws
โข Absolutely vital for the commercial grower
โข Pawpaws are unknown to 98% of US consumers
โข Education is basic to gaining a customer following
โข At this time best outlets are farmers markets โ
urban or at the farm itself
โข Restaurants are another possibility (w/ problems)
โข Some processed products have real potential
39. Pricing
โข Must be high to cover
harvest costs
โข In San Francisco they sell
for $5/lb and they arenโt
even named varieties
โข When I sold in DC for 3
years at the Dupont Circle
Farmers Market, I sold my
named varieties for $5/lb
โข In smaller town farmers
markets, price about $3/lb
40. Consumer Education
โข Consumer education is a must in order to sell this new fruit.
โข Samples! Few people know pawpaw, are fearful, hesitate to buy.
โข Also, information sheets and recipes
42. Mechanized Processing ?
Very important to extend the market season.
Makes excellent ice cream. Processing not yet realized.
43. ORGANIZATIONS
โข The PawPaw Foundation โ since 1988
Public outreach, education, stimulation of interest & research
โข Ohio Pawpaw Growers Association โ new in 2008
Production & marketing issues, is now national in scope
โข Kentucky State University โ since 1992
Only full time research program โ Dr. Kirk Pomper
โข Ohio Pawpaw Festival โ since 1998
Held annually near Athens, OH
44. KSU Research
Dr. Kirk Pomper
โข Germ plasm repository
โข DNA analysis
โข Regional variety trials
โข Seed propagation
โข Root stock trials
โข Acetogenin analysis
โข Cultivar breeding
โข Species hybrids
45. Primary Research Needs
โข Efficient mechanical processing methods
โข Cultivars with thicker skins, less perishable
โข Breeding for reliable color break
โข Identify superior root stock
โข Tissue culture propagation
โข Acetogenins as possible anti-cancer compound
โข Acetogenins as possible health risk (Parkinsonism)
46. Primary development needs
โข More growers to meet demand
โข Mail order fruit from one orchard is sent nationwide
โข A few wineries need source of fruit
โข Creameries making ice cream need pulp
โข People in DC and elsewhere are calling to ask what
market carries the fruit
