2. Mise en scene
It starts with a shot on the beach supposedly with a person stranded on the beach looking into the
distance with his face covered in water and sand.
Then it moves to a different setting which is the Japanese building where the protagonist meets the
antagonist presumably. The antagonist looks like he is an old man with wrinkles.
in what to appears to be a Japanese building due to the design and the decorations in the shot. the
main actor (Leonardo Dicaprio) who is wearing a suit including the other actors all of them are
wearing formal.
This establishes that this is some kind of a business like event but looking at it from a narrative
perspective you can see that that it is not a business event like we expect it to be. As the antagonist in
this shot or the guest in that cases is wearing something distinct from the every one else which makes
him the center of the shot.
3. Cinematography
using cinematography which can be proven to be a major part in this opening
scene as the camera movement moves seamlessly around creating the feel that
you are there on set. This can be observed by looking at the first few shots of
the film for example the close up of the waves in the start which establishes the
setting as well as the close ups of the protagonist not only in the beginning but
also at the last few moments. each one has a reason to be there to make us
familiarize ourselves with the characters .
4. Editing
If you look on the footage you can see that the transitions are seamless and the transitions are
quick and smooth enough that the eye can’t notice it.
Each transition is quick to insure that all what is desired from the shots are there and ensure
that the narrative is still intact.
For example quick dissolve for one of the shots it simply fits in the upcoming shots.
5. sound
The sound is different as it is mainly the dialogue and the background noises that help establish
the mood for the scene.
The opening doesn’t have any music in it but it has environmental noises like the waves crashing
and the sounds all seam muffled to ensure that you hear the sound that the director wants you
to hear.
This also changes as the shot is changed to an echoed due to the location changing.
