Critical Reflection 1
1. Critical Reflection 1By Omar Atabany
The genre that I have researched
and created at is psychological
thrillers I started by researching
Silence of the lambs which
contains conventions that are
rather interesting to me that are
like the intensity of the shots
and minimal dialogue that keeps
the audience hooked to the film.
Props and stock characters are
also used in psychological
thrillers is significant in like the
serial killer psychologist which
tend to create a hook and a type
of distortion in the equilibrium
that is never fixed properly.
Also the sound and volume
intensifying and creates the
mood of the film and portray
how the villain or victim feels.
By also researching Shutter
Island I found that the narrative
of the story of consists of a lot
of changes from enigma to
Todorov’s theory of
equilibrium. This inspired me to
create in my project to have a
confusing yet a slightly seen
message hidden in between the
shots which creates this feeling
that the audience feel of
immersion, suspense and
intrigue. The cinematography
how it creates a certain feeling
to the audience watching. The
transitions that switch from one
side of the location to the other
end to create a dramatic effect.
The use of sound in it inspired
me to use the diegetic and non-
diegetic noises and music in the
right time to create a certain
mood to create the perfect
feeling for the people watching
to know what is going on.
Psychological thrillers are quite
interesting as they tap into the
way people perceive the world
and that there are things that
people tend to hold close to
them. Characters secrecy is a
key theme in psychological
thrillers. This secrecy is
enjoyable for the audience tends
to destroy the confusion and
disturbance. People tend to like
that feeling as it causes them to
concentrate and open their eyes
and minds. The conventions
usually are kept intact and not
abandoned while doing so.
This type of genre has its own
audience that are around the age
of 17 to 37 as this is split up to
explorers and resigned.
the purpose of the opening scene
is to introduce your audience to
the main concepts of the film
that hooks them in to make
them want more to know what is
going on in the shots that makes
them wonder what Is going on
in the film it makes them
intrigued. By doing so you can
see that in the opening scene as
the shot starts with an
establishing shot that presents
the location that the story is
happening in a companied by a
voice over talking about the
reality of the world creating an
enigma by making wonder if it
is a narration or a character that
is talking in the background yet
to be met. The production
company logo is an animated
opening of the production
company that is pulsating
simulating the movement of a
moving heart this itself presents
the anticipation and interest in
the film midway.
For the genre it was quite hard to
create something in my own eyes
that kind of have a confusing and
how the fact that in the script
there is little to no dialogue
which was quite a challenge for
the creation of the opening scene.
This can be seen as my narrative
stars with an equilibrium and an
enigma as it starts with a voice
over of a person who is not
known by an audience and the
first character that is introduced
is rather vague as nothing is
known about him and even what
he says is little to make the
audience judge him. Editing wise
the editing is mostly quick swift
cutting for the transitions to
ensure the pace of the opening
scene is consistent and fairly
understandable.
Representation was quite a weak
spot for me as the only thing that
represented the characters was
the posture and what they are
wearing yet this doesn’t give off
enough about the characters as
2. the characters are not well
developed. You can read the
expressions of the visible
character as they seem quite
confused and shocked and from
what it looks like he is lying on
the a chair in a kind of a sleeping
or napping position. Shots wise
there isn’t much as there is only
around 3 types of shots only used
in the opening scene and it isn’t
enough to create a perfect
representation of the characters
or show enough details about
them.
