2. BASIC INFORMATION
• Drugs are substances that have physiological and/or
psychological affects when introduced to the body.
• Can be prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, illicit, or
commercial.
• Typically categorized as depressants, stimulants,
hallucinogens, inhalants, and opioids.
3. DEPRESSANTS
• Slow down the central nervous system
• Cause relaxation and sleep
• Include alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines
• Abused for their calming effects
• Abuse can lead to respiratory depression and coma,
along with a host of medical issues
• Fatal withdrawal
4. STIMULANTS
• Speed up the central nervous system
• Cause increased energy, attention, and alertness
• Includes caffeine, nicotine, amphetamine,
methamphetamine, and cocaine
• Abused to improve energy and performance
• Abuse can lead to heart attack and stroke
5. OPIOIDS
• Includes natural substances derived from opium, as
well as synthetic substances
• Includes morphine, heroin, fentanyl, and prescription
pain medication such as hydrocodone and oxycodone
• Cause euphoria and relaxation
• Abuse causes respiratory depression and heart failure
6. MARIJUANA
• Has depressant, stimulant, and hallucinogenic
properties
• Main psychoactive compound is THC
• Causes euphoria, relaxation, and altered sensation
and perception
• Abuse can cause ongoing anxiety, paranoia,
psychosis, and cognitive issues
7. PREVALENCE
• According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Survey on
Drug Use and Health (2017):
• 7.6% of the population over the age of 18 had a
substance use disorder
• 3.4% had cooccurring mental illness
• Increases in 18-25yo alcohol use and marijuana use
• Slight decrease in new heroin users, however increase
in opioid-related deaths
8. COLLEGE STUDENTS
• Arria et al. (2017) found marijuana to be the most
prevalent substance used by college students.
However, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (2017)
found marijuana use in college students was lower
than non-college students.
• Prescription stimulants are the second most
commonly used in college students (Arria et al., 2017),
abused to improve concentration, performance,
energy, and alertness.
• Alcohol use is higher in college students than their
non-college peers. (NIDA, 2017)
9. WARNING SIGNS
• Changes in mood and behavior
• Poor performance in work/school
• Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities
• Financial issues
• Relationship issues
• Changes in appetite, sleep, and/or hygiene

11. WHAT IS THE HAVEN?
The Haven at College is the leading national provider
of on-campus treatment and recovery programs.
We offer programming year-round (yes – during all
breaks!) in order to ensure we meet the needs of all of
those who are struggling.
We work collaboratively with universities to provide
individuals with the care they need to recover from
substance use and mental health issues in a safe and
supportive environment while they prepare for or
continue their college experience.

College students (actively enrolled or not)
College-bound individuals
College-age individuals
13. SERVICES
We provide treatment for substance use disorders
and mental health disorders at the following levels of
care:
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Nine or more hours of direct service including
group therapy, individual therapy, and case
management
Outpatient (OP)
Less than nine hours of direct service including
group therapy, individual therapy, and case
management. This includes your traditional

Mentoring and Monitoring
Peer mentoring and support for those who may not be
ready/interested in quitting substances, but still wants some
help
Weekly individual counseling
Peer-led Recovery Meetings
Recovery Housing
Sober living currently located at Miami Preserve apartments
Live-in peer monitoring and support
We accept most major insurance, including Aetna Student
