WHAT IS DRUG ADDICTION?
• Is a disease that affects a persons brain
and behavior and leads to an inability to
control the use of a legal or illegal or
medication.
• Drug addiction can start with experimental
use of a recreational drug in social
situations.
• Substance such a alcohol, marijuana and
nicotine also are considered drugs.
EFFECTS OF DRUG
ADDICTION
• Side effect of drug addiction is a weakend immune system, increasing
the risk of illness and infection.
• Heart conditions ranging from abnormal heart rates to heart
attack and collapsed veins and blood vessel infections from injected
drugs.
• Problems with memory, attention and decision-making, which make
daily living more difficult.
• Nausea and abdominal pain, which can also lead to changes in
appetite and weight loss
• Increased strain on the liver, which puts the person at risk of
significant liver damage or liver failure
• Seizures, stroke, mental confusion and brain damage
• Lung disease
• Global effects of drugs on the body, such as breast development
in men and increases in body temperature, which can lead to
other health problems
CAUSES OF DRUG ADDICTION
• High-level sports competition
• Prescription drugs
• Job stress
• Physical abuse
• School/college problems
• Financial difficulties
• Poor self-esteem
• Loss of a loved one
4 WAYS TO PREVENT DRUG ADDICTION
1.LEARN TO DEAL WITH LIFE’S PRESSURE
-THE INABILITY TO DEAL WITH NORMAL LIFE PRESSURES IS ONE
MAJOR REASONS THAT DRIVE PEOPLE TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL.
2.DON’T GIVE IN TO PEER PRESSURE
-SOME PEOPLE PARTICULARLY TEENAGERS AND YOUNG ADULTS,
EXPERIMENT WITH DRUGS JUST TO PORTRAY A COOL IMAGE IN
FRONT OF OTHERS
3.DEVELOP CLOSE FAMILY TIES
-RESEARCH INDICATES THAT PEOPLE WHO SHARES A CLOSE
RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR FAMILIES ARE LESS LIKELY TO
BECONME DRUG ADDICTS.
4. DEVELOP HEALTHY HABITS
-BEING HEALTHY ACTIVE MAKES IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE TO DEAL
WITH LIFE STRESSES. A HEALTHY DIET A REGULAR EXERCISE
PROMOTES FEEL GOOD CHEMICALS IN THE BRAIN.
KINDS OF DRUGS
• Cocaine- is a powerfully addictive stimulant drug made from the
leaves of the coca plant native to South America.
• Cannabis- Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names,
is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant used for medical
or recreational purposes. (marijuana, grass, dope, pat,
puff,weed)
• Benzodiazepines- Benzodiazepines, sometimes called "benzos", are
a class of psychoactive drugs whose core chemical structure is
the fusion of a benzene ring and a diazepine ring. (alprazolam,
clobazam, clonazepam, clorazepate)
• Crack- Crack, the most potent form in which cocaine appears, is
also the riskiest. It is between 75% and 100% pure, far stronger
and more potent than regular cocaine.
• Ecstacy- EcSTASy HAS bEcOmE AN EmbRAcIVE “mARkETING” TERm FOR
DRUG DEALERS SELLING “EcSTASy-TyPE” DRUGS THAT mAy, IN FAcT,
contain very little or no MDMA at all
ADVANTAGES OF DRUG ADDICTION
• Top-notch amenities- Spas and luxury pools are not
uncommon sites at most exclusive private drug
treatment centers. These facilities cater to
residents every need so they can focus more on their
recovery.
• Location, location, location. Many of the best
private rehab centers can be found in Malibu
overlooking the Pacific Ocean, in the desert of
luxurious Palm Springs or in the mountainous beauty
of Wyoming or Colorado. To help remove the
individual from a toxic environment, these private
facilities spared no expense in selecting the most
breath-taking scenery in the United States.
DISADVANTAGES OF DRUG ADDICTION
• The cost- While prices vary, and some private facilities are
affordable, many cost thousands of dollars or more per week.
This makes these programs inaccessible to many who would seek
treatment there.
• Your peers- One of the primary components of drug rehab is a
connection with the peer group and building a sense of community
within the program. Individuals considering some of the most
expensive programs need to make sure that they are
comfortable opening up in front of people who come from what
are potentially very different socio-economic backgrounds.
• The location- The location of your residential rehab treatment
center may be peaceful and pastoral, but what good is it if you
cAN’T GET THERE. mAkE SURE THAT yOU cAN AFFORD TRAVEL cOSTS TO
your rehab destination, and that it is accessible for your family
if they plan to come for a visit. If the location is too far from
home to be feasible, consider an outpatient drug treatment
program that allows you to continue certain aspects of your
everyday life such as work or school.
WHAT ARE TREATMENTS FOR DRUG
ADDICTION
• There are many options that have been successful
in treating drug addiction including:
• behavioral counseling
• Medication
• medical devices and applications use to treat
withdrawal symptoms or deliver skill training.
• evaluation and treatment for co-occurring
mental health issues such as depression and
anxiety.
• Long-term follow-up to prevent relapse.
