1. All kinds of people
August Sander and Mike Disfarmer
2. August sander
• August Sander took on a project to document all
forms of individuals & classes in pre-WWII
Germany. His beautifully composed and lit subjects
described such a broad variety of German people
that his work was censured by the government (it did
not comply with the vision of the Nazi party, that the
German people was a unified and undifferentiated
race). This work resurfaced after the war and stands
as a tribute to the loss of cultural diversity in the
country. a
42. Mike Disfarmer
An eccentric individual, he changed his own name to
“Disfarmer” as a rebellion against his farmer parents and
possibly his birth name of Mayer, which is near to maier
(meaning milk farmer).
Disfarmer had a photography studio frequented by the rural
community in Herber Springs Arkansas.
Getting a portrait made at the Disfarmer studio was a
popular thing to do and Disfarmer ended up creating an
incredible record of the entire community.
