Bullock, and other photographers at that time were heavily influenced by nature, and finding a deeper understanding of it,
as if nature has the capacity to help a person transcend to higher level of spirituality. This is very much in line with the post civil war concept of sublime nature.

He used a large format camera to give the images a rich level of detail and eccho the concept of a sublime, awe inspiring and powerful landscape that arose in the days just after the american civil war.
