Background And Statement Of The Problem
CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION 1.1. Introduction
This chapter includes background and statement of the problem, the significance of the study, the
purpose of the study, the research questions, the research hypotheses, the research variables, the
conceptual and operational definitions of cohesion, and the definition of basic terms.
After Bain (1867) classified prose discourse into four discourse modes, he postulated that quality in
each mode comprised the elements of unity, mass (later known as emphasis), and coherence.
Conners (1981) stipulated that Bain 's ideas greatly influenced composition instruction. This status
went on until 1950 when it started to diminish gradually, "giving way to conceptualizations of
written discourse that place increased emphasis on the contexts for writing (e.g., Kinneavy, 1971)
and the processes that writers use to produce writing within varying contexts (e.g., Flower & Hayes,
1980). Clearly, these emphases now permeate all levels of practice and theory" (McCulley, 1985, p.
269).
As El–Gazzar (2006) states, "the ability to write well is not a naturally acquired skill. It is usually
learned and culturally transferred as a set of practices in formal instructional contexts" (p. 1). Skill
in writing is an acquired art learned through practice and experience. The ability to compose is
essential for writing. This entails telling or retelling information narratively or a descriptively

Background And Identity
What differentiates me from the thousands of other hopeful students applying to colleges across the
nation. Why am I any different than the average high school student writing the same college essay
that ultimately determines our future? The answer being my background and identity that originate
from those around me. Family and friends have personally affected me in constructive ways
through learned experiences and lessons as well as my taught beliefs. I am the physical and
ideological embodiment of those who've been a part of my life. Furthermore, the meaning of my life
derives itself from family and the durability of our relationship. The biggest influence and factor in
my ideologies, morals, interests, and actions is my background.

Background And Identity
Sometimes it is best to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Life can carry you away
like a river with commitments and responsibilities and in a blink of an eye, the river will end. It is
imperative that one fights the current and takes a step back to realize what life is actually about
and who one truly is. High school is like that river, and it takes you away with all the time in
clubs, sports, and hours of studying you invest. Defining who the real "me" is difficult because
there is barely any time to explore myself. Nonetheless, my background and identity allow me to
realize who I really am and ignites a fire in me to succeed in life. My identity reveals how my
background forged me into the person I am today. Have you ever heard about a classic story where
an immigrant comes to America with nothing and pursues the American dream? My father portrays
that classic story. Both of my parents were born in Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in South
America. They...show more content...
Growing up in a Hispanic household, family is everything and spending time with family is
crucial, explaining why we visit our family in Bolivia every year. My parents demonstrate that no
matter what happens in life, family will always be there to support me. I care about my family
more than anything, and I care about people and how they feel. The value of family teaches me to
be empathetic to others and inspires me to become a doctor in order to help people in the future.
As life continues to sweep time away from me, it is crucial to step back and look at the bigger
picture of my identity. My background and identity speak more than just my test scores and grades
because it showcases the real "me" and how my identity pushes me to earn those good grades. As
the commitments and responsibilities of high school come to an end, I am thrilled to jump back in
the river and succeed in the journey of

My Educational Background Of School
My educational background began with me attending public school for about three years, then I
went to catholic school. Middle school was the best part of my education. In middle school I was
given the opportunity to express myself creatively through dance, drama, writing, and with my
voice. I attended a school of arts for one year; I noticed some changes that I was not familiar with
when I was at student at catholic school. While in catholic school we studied a curriculum that
included science, math, language, and social studies, but religion was dominant over all the
material. At the school of the arts, I studied the same materials but the religion was absent, instead
we were offered creative classes such as dance, drama, band, and vocal chorus. In addition to the
curriculum there were the projects, for example, the science fair and social studies fair projects. I
have always liked to be unique and creative and I would use these projects to show that. I was even
fortunate enough to be accepted to attend Martin Luther King Magnet High School, neither myself
nor my parents had considered this as an opportunity. As a student at MLK, I learned I would have
to push myself and give extra effort in order to make the grade. The educators believed in high
quality learning objectives, as students we were required to analyze information and compare and
contrast, instead of completing simple assignments where we would recall information. I studied
seven or eight subjects per day and I

My Background Identity
Prompt: "Some students have a background, identity, interest or talent that is so meaningful they
believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you please share your
story."
You rarely meet a person who is truly incredible. This person changes the world because they care
so deeply about what they are doing. I was lucky enough to call this person mom. My mom was a
speech pathologist whose sole purpose in life was to help others. She worked with everyone: the
physically disabled, mentally ill and elderly. Not many people have the kindness, patience and
dedication to make a difference in the lives of people with special needs. Her genuine love for people
extended to her unconditional love for her family.
She was always there for us, even teaching at our elementary school to be closer to us. When we

My favorite group sings songs from the 1950's at nursing homes. It's such a rewarding experience
when a 90 year old lady sings "Hound Dog" and later tells you she had the biggest crush on Elvis.
Due to my mom's love of serving others I understand the importance of community service. I've
volunteered over 200 hours in the past four years, and was recognized by my school with both the
IB Caring Award, and two prestigious Keystone awards.
Furthermore, this summer I was selected by the Department of State to be one of sixteen Youth
Ambassadors from across the nation to go to Cyprus. While there I studied numerous
environmental issues and felt empowered to improve my community upon my return. Currently,
I'm leading two recycling programs assisted by Duke Energy, one in my school and one on the
islands of my local lake. While working on these projects I hear my mom's favorite saying "always
leave a place better than how you found it." I hope these projects I can improve my community and
the environment and leave it better than how I found

Academic Background And Career Interest Essay
Academic background and career interest
Ever since my later adolescence years, I have always been intrigued by the diverse complexity of
the human brain. Numerous days I have sat down obtrusively observing my surroundings just to
satisfy my curiosity on how individuals think, reason and problem solve everyday life happenings.
As such, when it was time to attend university, I decided to study psychology as a means of gaining
knowledge and understanding about individuals' cognitive processes and their behavior. During my
undergraduate studies, for a particular reason, I was struck by Abnormal Psychology and spent hours
thinking about the various disorders captured by the then Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM
IV). I spent an awful lot of time trying to understand the differing disorders and how their impact on
the behavior and thinking processes of individuals that are diagnosed with them.
I recently completed a Master's degree in Counseling psychology through a mentored low
residency program at the American International College in Springfield, MA. As such, I was able
to improve my academic skills and obtained practical experience from my clinical internship. My
inherent enthusiasm to help others and be a positive difference maker in their lives predisposes me
to seek doctoral pursuit as I aim is to develop a more robust understanding of the nuances and
complexities surrounding behavior and cognition of human beings. More specifically, I aspire to

Essay about Educational History and Background
Educational History and Background I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I learned
everything I needed to know there. Everything that has to do with life that is. I started my
education there and I will continue it where ever I go. My educational background was just as
normal and fun like any other kids. But I was the unique child that made my education different
and more enjoyable. My learning process has five processes: elementary, middle, high school,
college, and the future. Elementary school started out as a bore but moved on to eventually being
fun and enjoyable. I grew to love school and learning during my fourth and fifth grade years at Zia
elementary school. My teacher taught me the value of history and American History...show more

The teachers taught me well, while my peers taught me more about life. I made my best friends
in middle school and we are a family now. I cherished the time I spent in middle school. I was a
top student who was doing well, had many friends, and was making a name for myself in sports
and extracurricular activities. Then once again graduation rolled around and I had to leave all of
the good things behind. But I was ready to embark on an education that was more geared towards
my future. High school was an easy transaction. I felt like I had the education and maturity level
of a young adult. I knew I could handle all of the work and stress that was going to be dealt out in
my classes. I noticed that high school was a lot like middle school and that I could handle the
schedule. I did not really have any close personal relationships with any of my teachers like I had
had in the past at my other schools. I only really liked two of my teachers out of the four years I
was at school. Both of them were my math teachers for my junior and senior year. The last two
years of math I learned so much that now I enjoy doing math because I actually understand it. The
only other teacher that made an impression on me was my junior year English teacher. She was the
only English teacher I had that actually taught me how to write and read great books. She took the
time out to work with me individually. She gave me the tools I needed to write papers. High

I choose to pursue an agriculture degree because I have always felt drawn to the field. I have
loved animals and felt a strong desire to care for them since I was a little girl. Animals mean the
world to me and when they're doing well, my heart can rest. I absolutely love farm animals and
fully intend to have my own sort of miniature zoo on a hobby farm. During high school I was in FFA
and 4H and thoroughly enjoyed showing chickens and rabbits. I started out as a biology major at
Dixie State but did not find satisfaction because there were no animal science courses available, but
I was unable to leave my family and live elsewhere so I remained unhappy.

Ethnic Background Essay
I was born into a mixed family much like Tiger's. My mother's father was Chinese–American,
orphaned by his birth–family and raised in the South. My mother's mother was African–American
and, following the family legacy, she received a degree from Fisk University in Nashville, TN. My
relatives were instrumental in the foundation of the Avery Normal Institute in Charleston, SC, an
educational institute for African–Americans founded in 1865 (now associated with the College of
Charleston). My mother grew up in a segregated society where choices were rarely available. She
received her Master's degree in Library Science from HBC University. My father's family is of

Ironically, since acquiring my husband's last name, people assume and accept without hesitation
that I'm Irish. I have curly hair like a "good Irish girl" or often hear, "Susannah O'Connor sounds
like a "good Irish name." Judging by my married name alone, I have been shuffled into the
Irish–American–Caucasian check–box.
I was raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. Silver Spring was a diverse community, our
neighbors were Yugoslavian, Korean, Italian, and included many others. There were many
ethnic–specific markets and restaurants near our house where we tried many different foods. Our
community pool was located in a conservative orthodox Jewish section of Silver Spring. Outside of
swim season, our family was included in many Passover seders, sukkoh parties and Bar/Bat
Mitzvah's through relationships developed on our swim team. I felt comfortable in our culturally
dynamic neighborhood and felt fewer pressures to be classified into a specific ethnic category.
When I was in middle school my father inherited his parent's house and our family made an
uncomfortable transition to Chevy Chase, Md. In contrast to the Silver Spring community, Chevy
Chase is a White, upper–class, wealthy suburb of Washington, DC. Many of our neighbors belonged
to one of the three local country clubs that, until just a few years ago, did not admit minorities. Other
than neighborly requests for babysitting duties, our

I was born and raised in Haiti. I grew up with my mother, my two brothers while my father was
living in the US. I am the youngest of them all. Often we would have a cousin even grandmother in
the household. I also had my aunt and her family living about 300 feet from us. My mother had us
by the time she was in her mid–20. She always said she did not want people to think that she could
not raise her children right because she was young. She played both role of mother and father. She
wanted us to have respect for others especially her. She did not want us to be influenced by our
surrounding which was not all positive. She emphasized on the importance of education. We trusted

Autobiography Of My Family
I was born and raised into a hardworking family that are the complete opposite of culture
alienators. My siblings and I are all first generation in America on my mom's side and second
generation on my dad's side. Life was very hard for my parents to raise all seven of us and
depended on my grandparents for most of their help. Being that my grandparents brought all nine
of their kids to America from Belize it was also very hard for them so survive and find stability.
Most families that come to America from a third world country usually find it very difficult to
keep up family traditions and sometimes lose all contact. My family found a way to stay very
close and keep the Belizean culture very alive still to this day. As you can tell by now...show more

This left my mom with seven kids to raise by herself. Meaning one on one time was rare, because
my mom is not a superhero and could not be in multiple places at one time. Grief left my family
and I in a place where we did not know what to do, but we eventually got out of it, and continued
on with our life. We always remembered the hard working parents we had, and the hard working
mother we still had. I am resilient and got back on my feet and continued to attend school,
graduated elementary school, and will soon graduate from high school. Although, I have gone
through many difficulties it has made me work harder as an individual and choose my career
choice at an early age. Being that I was very into the heart at a young age, and my father passing
from a heart disease, I always knew I wanted to study cardiology, and will someday soon become a
cardiologist. Being that my mother has attended medical school several times, I first handedly
have seen how difficult it can be. I have been told by many people to pick a different profession
because of that; But because of how passionate I am about cardiology and the amount of times I
have experienced people deal with heart problems has assured me that I have chose the right
profession. I being a very conscientious person has has also assured me that I will be able to tackle
medical school and become a cardiologist. I believe that the first steps of becoming a cardiologist is
that I have personally experienced people suffer from

Briefly share your nursing background and professional interests.
My nursing background is in women and children's health care. As a clinician, I have practiced in
acute and primary care settings. My professional interests include nursing genomics, nursing
leadership, and new program development.
Summarize how informatics has impacted or changed nursing practice. Provide an example from
your professional experience.
According to Dr. Ken Majowski (Laureate, 2011) health care informatics has been in existence for
at least the past two to three decades. Ozbolt & Saba (2008) state that "in the second half of the 20th
century" the focus of nursing informatics was on the development of "a standardized language" (p.
199). In the 1970's, informatics included "nursing care planning and documentation" (Ozbolt & Saba,
2008, p. 200). In the 1980's, nursing informatics research and education led to the "establishment of
data standards ... unleashing the potential of nursing informatics to improve practice" thus giving
nursing the opportunity to "translate knowledge to practice via decision support, and to create new
knowledge from the data generated in nursing practice" (Ozbolt & Saba, 2008, p 201). In the 1990's
the "Nursing Terminology Summit Conferences" met "to develop concept–oriented reference
terminology models for nursing" (Ozbolt & Saba, 2008, p. 203). The 2000's proved to be a decade
of additional progress with the call for "an electronic health record" for every

The three things that have made the biggest impact on and have influenced my life that shaped
me into the person I am today are family background, experiences from my school year, and
religious beliefs. Our culture provides a lens through which we view the world and interpret our
everyday experiences. In order to know who I am today, I must look at who you've been. Many
educators around the country are interested in developing a multicultural approach in their teaching.
They find themselves in classrooms with 25 children of varying racial and cultural backgrounds,
and are looking for ways to connect what they do in the classroom to the cultures represented by
their students. Before we can begin to understand others, however, we need to understand ourselves
and what we bring to our interactions with others. Every time we engage with our surroundings we
create an experience both consciously and unconsciously. Our live experiences whether traumatic or
joyful shape who we are over time. An experience that has defined the person I am today is my
journey I went through as a child traveling back and forth from the United States to Mexico as an
undocumented. If a child has an impact when moving into a new house and neighborhood imagine
countries. I was brought to the United States when I was two years old. When you are a baby I

Essay on My Family History
My Family History
Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have
a better perspective of your life. Having a clear understanding of your family background allows you
to better appreciate the things that you would normally take for granted. The house, the car, and the
average clothing may look better when one sees the sacrifices their family has made. They will see
that their family has worked very hard just so their family can experience the better things in life. A
persons roots and origin is one of the most important things to explore. It alone can bring you closer
to self–discovery.

One of these is that on Thanksgiving everybody comes together to my parents' house in New Jersey
for a huge feast. On Christmas only my mother and the children (me and my brother) travel to Illinois
to spend a week with my grandparents. On New Years Eve we all get together at my parents'
house in New Jersey and toast to the New Year with champagne and apple cider. During Labor
Day weekend all of my family travels to South Jersey to my grandfathers' condo. We usually
spend all of our time on the beach and barbequing, except on Sunday when we go to church. After
all, my grandfather is a minister. One of our biggest family traditions is going back to Puerto
Rico. Every year my mother and I travel back to Puerto Rico for a portion of our summer
vacation. Now that I am older I travel there more often and stay there much longer. My father never
joins because he doesn't like my mothers side of the father too much and he thinks that we when we
speak Spanish we are all plotting against him. Of course that's not true though. My bother doesn't
speak Spanish so he doesn't like to go either. I guess that tradition is one that belongs solely to my
mother and I.
The role of the people in family basically stayed the same for most of the generations with a little
change in the later generations. Earlier the males were the only ones that worked in the family and
the wife stayed at home and took care of the house and

My Family With Business Background Essay
I grow up in a family with business background. Most of my family, in Iran, has their own business
firms. Following my father 's footsteps, I also developed an interest in starting and running my own
business. When I was 13 years old, with help from family and friends, I started my first business on
the internet. It didn 't take long that the website became famous and profitable. After two years, I
sold my business and looked for another opportunity to invest my money.
I always had a dream to study abroad and get a degree in business. I consider myself fortunate as I
was selected to participate in a program in the United Kingdom called Bossiness Foundation allowing
me to move to the United Kingdom and study business in high school. When I was seventeen years
old, I moved from my home country of Iran to the United Kingdom pursuing a better education and
future opportunities.
It wasn 't easy to say goodbye to my family and friends and move to a country with a different
culture, language, weather and lifestyle. I moved to Brighton UK, a Small city in the southern
UK, where my high school was located. For the first time in my life, I was on my own. I had to
grow up quickly and start making decisions, for my life and my future, on my own while learning
and integrating into to a new society. I took on this challenge head on and started learning what it
takes to survive on my own. The most important skill that I learned was time and money
management. There was no one around to

Cultural Background
Culture is the totality of learned, socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects, and
behavior. It includes ideas, values, and artifacts of groups of people (Schaefer, 2006). Understanding
culture can be tricky, ever ask "why do people act the way they do?", "what made me do that",
"what was I thinking?" Physical abilities, educational background, and social background of how I

Similarities in culture is more so the same then not. Even though our early childhood was around
drugs and alcohol our parents made sure we were at church with either grandparent learning the
Word of God. When we moved to the south side, I met several friends who went to church and
church camps as well. That brought me closer to some families of Caucasian decent. My parents
were very athletic in school and that allowed them to teach us sports and sportsmanship. That
allowed me to blend in with some of the girls in the neighborhood because they were also athletic.
My father took me to a field were girls (Caucasian) were playing softball after talking with the
coach my father left me there to practice with the team. I guess being in the neighborhood for a
while now I was comfortable with him leaving.
The school atmosphere was different I was hanging with Caucasian girls and the African
American children did not understand what I was doing being so close to children opposite of
my own culture. At that point, I was unsure of what their problem was but realized they were
sheltered from other cultures and raised differently. This caused several fights as a child because
other children would call me a "little white girl" and I had no idea of what that meant and was
offended. I was raised around majority boys in the neighborhood, until I started playing softball,
some would consider me as a tomboy. So

Background & Statement of Problem in Writing Cohesion

  • 1. Background And Statement Of The Problem CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION 1.1. Introduction This chapter includes background and statement of the problem, the significance of the study, the purpose of the study, the research questions, the research hypotheses, the research variables, the conceptual and operational definitions of cohesion, and the definition of basic terms. After Bain (1867) classified prose discourse into four discourse modes, he postulated that quality in each mode comprised the elements of unity, mass (later known as emphasis), and coherence. Conners (1981) stipulated that Bain 's ideas greatly influenced composition instruction. This status went on until 1950 when it started to diminish gradually, "giving way to conceptualizations of written discourse that place increased emphasis on the contexts for writing (e.g., Kinneavy, 1971) and the processes that writers use to produce writing within varying contexts (e.g., Flower & Hayes, 1980). Clearly, these emphases now permeate all levels of practice and theory" (McCulley, 1985, p. 269). As El–Gazzar (2006) states, "the ability to write well is not a naturally acquired skill. It is usually learned and culturally transferred as a set of practices in formal instructional contexts" (p. 1). Skill in writing is an acquired art learned through practice and experience. The ability to compose is essential for writing. This entails telling or retelling information narratively or a descriptively (Carson, 2001). • 2. Background And Identity What differentiates me from the thousands of other hopeful students applying to colleges across the nation. Why am I any different than the average high school student writing the same college essay that ultimately determines our future? The answer being my background and identity that originate from those around me. Family and friends have personally affected me in constructive ways through learned experiences and lessons as well as my taught beliefs. I am the physical and ideological embodiment of those who've been a part of my life. Furthermore, the meaning of my life derives itself from family and the durability of our relationship. The biggest influence and factor in my ideologies, morals, interests, and actions is my background. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Background And Identity Sometimes it is best to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Life can carry you away like a river with commitments and responsibilities and in a blink of an eye, the river will end. It is imperative that one fights the current and takes a step back to realize what life is actually about and who one truly is. High school is like that river, and it takes you away with all the time in clubs, sports, and hours of studying you invest. Defining who the real "me" is difficult because there is barely any time to explore myself. Nonetheless, my background and identity allow me to realize who I really am and ignites a fire in me to succeed in life. My identity reveals how my background forged me into the person I am today. Have you ever heard about a classic story where an immigrant comes to America with nothing and pursues the American dream? My father portrays that classic story. Both of my parents were born in Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in South America. They...show more content... Growing up in a Hispanic household, family is everything and spending time with family is crucial, explaining why we visit our family in Bolivia every year. My parents demonstrate that no matter what happens in life, family will always be there to support me. I care about my family more than anything, and I care about people and how they feel. The value of family teaches me to be empathetic to others and inspires me to become a doctor in order to help people in the future. As life continues to sweep time away from me, it is crucial to step back and look at the bigger picture of my identity. My background and identity speak more than just my test scores and grades because it showcases the real "me" and how my identity pushes me to earn those good grades. As the commitments and responsibilities of high school come to an end, I am thrilled to jump back in the river and succeed in the journey of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. My Educational Background Of School My educational background began with me attending public school for about three years, then I went to catholic school. Middle school was the best part of my education. In middle school I was given the opportunity to express myself creatively through dance, drama, writing, and with my voice. I attended a school of arts for one year; I noticed some changes that I was not familiar with when I was at student at catholic school. While in catholic school we studied a curriculum that included science, math, language, and social studies, but religion was dominant over all the material. At the school of the arts, I studied the same materials but the religion was absent, instead we were offered creative classes such as dance, drama, band, and vocal chorus. In addition to the curriculum there were the projects, for example, the science fair and social studies fair projects. I have always liked to be unique and creative and I would use these projects to show that. I was even fortunate enough to be accepted to attend Martin Luther King Magnet High School, neither myself nor my parents had considered this as an opportunity. As a student at MLK, I learned I would have to push myself and give extra effort in order to make the grade. The educators believed in high quality learning objectives, as students we were required to analyze information and compare and contrast, instead of completing simple assignments where we would recall information. I studied seven or eight subjects per day and I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My Background Identity Prompt: "Some students have a background, identity, interest or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you please share your story." You rarely meet a person who is truly incredible. This person changes the world because they care so deeply about what they are doing. I was lucky enough to call this person mom. My mom was a speech pathologist whose sole purpose in life was to help others. She worked with everyone: the physically disabled, mentally ill and elderly. Not many people have the kindness, patience and dedication to make a difference in the lives of people with special needs. Her genuine love for people extended to her unconditional love for her family. She was always there for us, even teaching at our elementary school to be closer to us. When we moved...show more content... My favorite group sings songs from the 1950's at nursing homes. It's such a rewarding experience when a 90 year old lady sings "Hound Dog" and later tells you she had the biggest crush on Elvis. Due to my mom's love of serving others I understand the importance of community service. I've volunteered over 200 hours in the past four years, and was recognized by my school with both the IB Caring Award, and two prestigious Keystone awards. Furthermore, this summer I was selected by the Department of State to be one of sixteen Youth Ambassadors from across the nation to go to Cyprus. While there I studied numerous environmental issues and felt empowered to improve my community upon my return. Currently, I'm leading two recycling programs assisted by Duke Energy, one in my school and one on the islands of my local lake. While working on these projects I hear my mom's favorite saying "always leave a place better than how you found it." I hope these projects I can improve my community and the environment and leave it better than how I found Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Academic Background And Career Interest Essay Academic background and career interest Ever since my later adolescence years, I have always been intrigued by the diverse complexity of the human brain. Numerous days I have sat down obtrusively observing my surroundings just to satisfy my curiosity on how individuals think, reason and problem solve everyday life happenings. As such, when it was time to attend university, I decided to study psychology as a means of gaining knowledge and understanding about individuals' cognitive processes and their behavior. During my undergraduate studies, for a particular reason, I was struck by Abnormal Psychology and spent hours thinking about the various disorders captured by the then Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM IV). I spent an awful lot of time trying to understand the differing disorders and how their impact on the behavior and thinking processes of individuals that are diagnosed with them. I recently completed a Master's degree in Counseling psychology through a mentored low residency program at the American International College in Springfield, MA. As such, I was able to improve my academic skills and obtained practical experience from my clinical internship. My inherent enthusiasm to help others and be a positive difference maker in their lives predisposes me to seek doctoral pursuit as I aim is to develop a more robust understanding of the nuances and complexities surrounding behavior and cognition of human beings. Everything that has to do with life that is. I started my education there and I will continue it where ever I go. My educational background was just as normal and fun like any other kids. But I was the unique child that made my education different and more enjoyable. My learning process has five processes: elementary, middle, high school, college, and the future. Then once again graduation rolled around and I had to leave all of the good things behind. But I was ready to embark on an education that was more geared towards my future. High school was an easy transaction. I felt like I had the education and maturity level of a young adult. I knew I could handle all of the work and stress that was going to be dealt out in my classes. I noticed that high school was a lot like middle school and that I could handle the schedule. I did not really have any close personal relationships with any of my teachers like I had had in the past at my other schools. I only really liked two of my teachers out of the four years I was at school. Both of them were my math teachers for my junior and senior year. The last two years of math I learned so much that now I enjoy doing math because I actually understand it. The only other teacher that made an impression on me was my junior year English teacher. She was the only English teacher I had that actually taught me how to write and read great books. She took the time out to work with me individually. She gave me the tools I needed to write papers. I have curly hair like a "good Irish girl" or often hear, "Susannah O'Connor sounds like a "good Irish name." Silver Spring was a diverse community, our neighbors were Yugoslavian, Korean, Italian, and included many others. There were many ethnic–specific markets and restaurants near our house where we tried many different foods. Our community pool was located in a conservative orthodox Jewish section of Silver Spring. Outside of swim season, our family was included in many Passover seders, sukkoh parties and Bar/Bat Mitzvah's through relationships developed on our swim team. I felt comfortable in our culturally dynamic neighborhood and felt fewer pressures to be classified into a specific ethnic category. When I was in middle school my father inherited his parent's house and our family made an uncomfortable transition to Chevy Chase, Md. In contrast to the Silver Spring community, Chevy Chase is a White, upper–class, wealthy suburb of Washington, DC. My siblings and I are all first generation in America on my mom's side and second generation on my dad's side. Life was very hard for my parents to raise all seven of us and depended on my grandparents for most of their help. Being that my grandparents brought all nine of their kids to America from Belize it was also very hard for them so survive and find stability. Grief left my family and I in a place where we did not know what to do, but we eventually got out of it, and continued on with our life. We always remembered the hard working parents we had, and the hard working mother we still had. I am resilient and got back on my feet and continued to attend school, graduated elementary school, and will soon graduate from high school. Although, I have gone through many difficulties it has made me work harder as an individual and choose my career choice at an early age. Being that I was very into the heart at a young age, and my father passing from a heart disease, I always knew I wanted to study cardiology, and will someday soon become a cardiologist. Being that my mother has attended medical school several times, I first handedly have seen how difficult it can be. I have been told by many people to pick a different profession because of that; But because of how passionate I am about cardiology and the amount of times I have experienced people deal with heart problems has assured me that I have chose the right profession. As a clinician, I have practiced in acute and primary care settings. My professional interests include nursing genomics, nursing leadership, and new program development. Summarize how informatics has impacted or changed nursing practice. Provide an example from your professional experience. According to Dr. Ken Majowski (Laureate, 2011) health care informatics has been in existence for at least the past two to three decades. Ozbolt & Saba (2008) state that "in the second half of the 20th century" the focus of nursing informatics was on the development of "a standardized language" (p. 199). In the 1970's, informatics included "nursing care planning and documentation" (Ozbolt & Saba, 2008, p. 200). In the 1980's, nursing informatics research and education led to the "establishment of data standards ... unleashing the potential of nursing informatics to improve practice" thus giving nursing the opportunity to "translate knowledge to practice via decision support, and to create new knowledge from the data generated in nursing practice" (Ozbolt & Saba, 2008, p 201). In the 1990's the "Nursing Terminology Summit Conferences" met "to develop concept–oriented reference terminology models for nursing" (Ozbolt & Saba, 2008, p. 203). • 14. The three things that have made the biggest impact on and have influenced my life that shaped me into the person I am today are family background, experiences from my school year, and religious beliefs. Our culture provides a lens through which we view the world and interpret our everyday experiences. In order to know who I am today, I must look at who you've been. Many educators around the country are interested in developing a multicultural approach in their teaching. They find themselves in classrooms with 25 children of varying racial and cultural backgrounds, and are looking for ways to connect what they do in the classroom to the cultures represented by their students. Before we can begin to understand others, however, we need to understand ourselves and what we bring to our interactions with others. Every time we engage with our surroundings we create an experience both consciously and unconsciously. Our live experiences whether traumatic or joyful shape who we are over time. An experience that has defined the person I am today is my journey I went through as a child traveling back and forth from the United States to Mexico as an undocumented. If a child has an impact when moving into a new house and neighborhood imagine countries. I was brought to the United States when I was two years old. After two years, I sold my business and looked for another opportunity to invest my money. I always had a dream to study abroad and get a degree in business.
