Conversations that Matter
2012 STUDY BY ROBERT HICKEY
QUEENā€™S UNIVERSITY
Involved 1,570 front-line staff from 16 agencies
in Ontario (including both large and small agencies,
union and non-union, urban and rural, and
soliciting regional representation).
FINDINGS:
ā€œBehavioural competencies which focus on values-based work practices and
support pro-social motivation among direct support workers reduce feelings of
de-personalization in the sector.
Human Resources strategies which provide training opportunities beyond
mandated health and safety requirements to include values-based
reflections on the nature of the work also mitigate de-personalization in the
sector.ā€
In addition, this study showed that dissatisfaction regarding advancement was
more about the desire for more meaningful and complex direct support roles
requiring more advanced skills and recognition than promotion.

David talks about how he was changed by his relationship with
Roland. Have you been changed by your relationship with someone
you support, and if so, how?
Iā€™ve learned to be less reliant on talking as the only form of
communication. Iā€™ve also learned that a person can be very skilled in an
area even though theyā€™re very limited in other areas.
Are there ways in which we can re-think the way support is
provided based on what you have heard in this video?
I like the distinction that David makes between coverage and
relationship. I think we continuously need to ask ourselves, ā€œAre we
respectful of the relationship we have with the person or are we just
doing coverage.
Lynne notes that we can be good and kind all day long, and still be
doing the wrong thing. What does she mean by this?
We usually really want to be nice to people and help people but if we
donā€™t listen to them, we may be helping them in the wrong way.

Iā€™ve learned to be less reliant on talking as the only form of Dec 20,

I used to really underestimate peopleā€™s ability before. Now, I realize if I Dec 28,
slow down a bit and break a task into small parts and give the odd 2013,
prompt, people can do some really complex tasks.
Iā€™m more curious and patient now. I know my work here has made me a Jan 4,
better parent for my own kids. 2014

HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE?!
4. SCOPE OF USE:
a. Public presentation of videos
The subscriber has the right to show individual videos from the
Conversations that Matter website to non-subscribers at public presentations
and meetings. These include:
ā€¢community presentations
ā€¢agency meetings
ā€¢during pre-screening and probationary period of a new employee
ā€¢individual presentations at public schools, colleges, and universities
(as in being an invited speaker to a class or course).
ā€¢meetings with another person or small groups
The subscriber is prohibited from showing a series of videos from the
Conversations that Matter website to non-subscribers as a part of ongoing staff
in-service or as a part of a post-secondary course. Prohibited presentations
include but are not limited to:
ā€¢college and university courses where you are the instructor
ā€¢agency in-service and training
ā€¢facilitated discussions with agency staff
In these instances, students and staff are required to subscribe to
Conversations that Matter
If you're interested, here's how it works:
OPTION 1:
For those agencies who would like to participate in a pilot project with us:
ā€¢ PDD will subsidize a portion of the subscriptions
ā€¢ There are a limited number of subscriptions so it will be on a first come,
first serve basis
ā€¢ We will work with/mentor you in rolling out and implementing the program
across your organization
ā€¢ In the spring of 2015, we will ask you for some detailed feedback about how
conversations that matter has impacted your agency - this would include
several online surveys, conference calls and/or face to face meetings
ā€¢ Our hope is that what we learn from you and your staff will help us to build
on and improve the site to best support your staff training going forward
If you're interested, here's how it works:
OPTION 2:
ā€¢ You simply log onto the site and subscribe!
ā€¢ We will be happy to help you think about how to implement the program in
your organization in a less formal way
ā€¢ Of course we would still welcome your feedback, but surveys and calls
would remain optional

  • 20. broadreach training Conversations that Matter 2012 STUDY BY ROBERT HICKEY QUEENā€™S UNIVERSITY Involved 1,570 front-line staff from 16 agencies in Ontario (including both large and small agencies, union and non-union, urban and rural, and soliciting regional representation). FINDINGS: ā€œBehavioural competencies which focus on values-based work practices and support pro-social motivation among direct support workers reduce feelings of de-personalization in the sector. Human Resources strategies which provide training opportunities beyond mandated health and safety requirements to include values-based reflections on the nature of the work also mitigate de-personalization in the sector.ā€ In addition, this study showed that dissatisfaction regarding advancement was more about the desire for more meaningful and complex direct support roles requiring more advanced skills and recognition than promotion.

Have you been changed by your relationship with someone you support, and if so, how? Iā€™ve learned to be less reliant on talking as the only form of communication. Iā€™ve also learned that a person can be very skilled in an area even though theyā€™re very limited in other areas. Are there ways in which we can re-think the way support is provided based on what you have heard in this video? I like the distinction that David makes between coverage and relationship. I think we continuously need to ask ourselves, ā€œAre we respectful of the relationship we have with the person or are we just doing coverage. Lynne notes that we can be good and kind all day long, and still be doing the wrong thing. What does she mean by this? We usually really want to be nice to people and help people but if we donā€™t listen to them, we may be helping them in the wrong way. ResetReset Doing the Wrong Thing Kindly Doesn't Make It Right!
