Conversations that Matter
2012 STUDY BY ROBERT HICKEY
QUEENāS UNIVERSITY
Involved 1,570 front-line staff from 16 agencies
in Ontario (including both large and small agencies,
union and non-union, urban and rural, and
soliciting regional representation).
FINDINGS:
āBehavioural competencies which focus on values-based work practices and
support pro-social motivation among direct support workers reduce feelings of
de-personalization in the sector.
Human Resources strategies which provide training opportunities beyond
mandated health and safety requirements to include values-based
reflections on the nature of the work also mitigate de-personalization in the
sector.ā
In addition, this study showed that dissatisfaction regarding advancement was
more about the desire for more meaningful and complex direct support roles
requiring more advanced skills and recognition than promotion.

David talks about how he was changed by his relationship with
Roland. Have you been changed by your relationship with someone
you support, and if so, how?
Iāve learned to be less reliant on talking as the only form of
communication. Iāve also learned that a person can be very skilled in an
area even though theyāre very limited in other areas.
Are there ways in which we can re-think the way support is
provided based on what you have heard in this video?
I like the distinction that David makes between coverage and
relationship. I think we continuously need to ask ourselves, āAre we
respectful of the relationship we have with the person or are we just
doing coverage.
Lynne notes that we can be good and kind all day long, and still be
doing the wrong thing. What does she mean by this?
We usually really want to be nice to people and help people but if we
donāt listen to them, we may be helping them in the wrong way.

David talks about how he was changed by his relationship with

Iāve learned to be less reliant on talking as the only form of Dec 20,

an area even though theyāre very limited in other areas.
I used to really underestimate peopleās ability before. Now, I realize if I Dec 28,
slow down a bit and break a task into small parts and give the odd 2013,
prompt, people can do some really complex tasks.
Iām more curious and patient now. I know my work here has made me a Jan 4,
better parent for my own kids. 2014
