Surf Music History
Surf music is a subgenre of rock music associated with surf culture. It was most popular between 1962 and 1964 and was found particularly in
Southern California. Surf rock began in the early 1960s as instrumental dance music. The sound was largely attributed to electric guitars which were
particularly characterized by the extensive use of a "wet" spring reverb which was thought to sound like waves. Guitarists also began to make use of
the vibrato arm on their guitar to bend the pitch of notes downward which they used to create electronic tremolo effects with their rapid, alternating
tremolo picking style. The electric bass was also very prominent in the sound of surf music. Surf rock existed in two major forms.
The first form is instrumental surf rock. This style was first launched into popularity by Dick Dale and the Del–Tones with their song, "Let's Go
Trippin'." Dick Dale brought Middle Eastern and Mexican influences to the typical rock and roll style. In addition, he used a reverb–drenched electric

By the second generation, in the early 1920s radio had become the most important and popular source of entertainment. As America was pitched
into the great depression in the early 1930s radio managed to sustain the still fairly young genre. The 40s had provided to be very pivotal era in

Luis Milan lived from 1500 to 1561 in Valencia, Spain. He was a Spanish renaissance composer who was the first composer to write and publish music
for the vihuela.
In 1536, Milan published a book entitled Libro de MГєsica de Vihuela de Mano Intitulado de Maestro. This book is his most famous, and is the first
book in history that consisted of vihuela music. It included many villancicos, pavanas, and over 40 fantasias. It also included vocal pieces with
accompaniment provided by the vihuela. It was organized so that the harder pieces were towards the end of the book and the easier ones were first. It
also contained alternate passages in some of the pieces for more advanced players.
Milan wrote various other books besides the one mentioned before. The first book that he wrote was called El Juego de Mandar. It was published in

During the study of 20th–century Western music history in this class, I found out there are may same movements of art and music. I took 20th century
Art history as well so there is always the comparison of them in my mind. Music and art appear to be two different art forms. Music is both auditory
art, but also an art of time and movement. Music express musicians' feelings through sound, it will create images in the mind of the viewer for them to
have a variety of feelings, and to elicit in the viewer emotional resonance. Painting is a visual art, space art. It is static. Painters use lines, shades and

Music and technology aid one another. In a way a person can capture music they love through technology and then the electronic companies
flourish due to the sale and popularity of these electronic devices. If a person wants to listen to music they can turn on a stereo or TV, choose a CD
or DVD to play, or listen to a songs downloaded in ITunes. All of these devices are proof to show how technology is used to record, play, and change

This paper will trace the history of rap music (also known as hip–hop). The origins of this music are found in the experiences of urban African
Americans during the 1970s. One of the most unique elements of rap music is its vocal style. In 1979, the record "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar
Hill Gang defined this style with its use of "speedy staccato word play and verbal dexterity" (Perkins 11). However, as pointed out by one of rap's
early leaders, Afrika Bambaataa, the true roots of this vocal style are found in the previous developments of African American culture. These
developments include not only the traditional musical and storytelling styles brought over from Africa, but also such things as the style of speech
used by the civil rights leader Malcolm X. Summing up Bambaataa's views on the roots of rap, Perkins says: "The rap tradition has been nurtured on

One of the first major changes that Gordy made was the adaptation to change the sound to match the psychedelia era that was going on. The
psychedelia era began with the gathering of people around the new California law to outlaw the use of LSD. Gordy would take advantage of this
by changing the Motown sound to reflect this sound by using guitar distortion, made the lyrics more serious, and invested in having more
elaborate productions. Another change that Gordy would make to keep the Motown sound relevant was by moving the main office out of Detroit

immigrant from Germany had finally come up with an idea that would change everything. Chichester Bell (Alexander Graham Bell's cousin) and
Thomas Edison's idea to record sounds on round cylinders was a good idea except for the sound quality and general effort that was required to make
and replicate sound. The Phonograph was one of the earliest attempts at recording devices. Thomas A. Edison wanted to create this device in order to
assist with business interactions. He originally used foil to record sounds, but this wasn't the best medium. You could only play sounds once and the
quality wasn't the greatest. This is when wax cylinders came into play. It was eventually decided that the wax cylinder wasn't strong enough to record
something permanently. Next followed the graphophone. This invention by Bell fixed the replay problem, but mass production of music would've been

In the 1840's Pittsburgh's growing working class wanted more entertainment. To meet this demand there was an increase in construction of new
music halls over the next two decades. The new theaters included the Melodeon Theatre, Lafayette Hall, Foster's Gaieties, Trimble's Variety,
Vierheller's Concert Garden, Wilkens Hall, Sefton's Opera House, The Pittsburgh Opera House, the Academy of Music, the new Masonic Hall, and
the Eagle Ice Cream Saloon that launched the career of Stephen Foster. It all began with Stephen Foster. His songs "Oh! Susanna" and "Camptown
Races" remain fairly popular today. Foster is acknowledged as "father of American music." He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in
1970, and he was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010. Following him in the first signs of "pop" music was Adam
Wade, Vaughn Monroe, Josie Carrie, and even Chris Kirkpatrick from N'Sync. All these pop stars plus many, many more were Pittsburgh natives.
A baby boomer generation of rock artists emerged from Pittsburgh during the 1960's and 1980's. Wild Cherry had their smash hit "Play that Funky
Music." Other small bands included Diamond Reo, The Granati Brothers, the Iron City Houserockers, and the Silencers. These along with other bands
released recordings on the major labels and received airplay across the nation. The
