The magazine replicates the style of Kerrang and NME magazines through its font choices, layout, and content. Photos were taken in a studio to look professional like music magazines. Models wear casual clothes like denim jackets and piercings to appeal to the target audience. The main cover model, Sam, has an indie style that represents the rock genre. Interviews use humor similarly to Kerrang. The layout balances variety with some organization to intrigue readers without overwhelming them.

Q1
1. QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. The title of the
magazine.
• To replicate the style of Kerrang or NME magazine, I
used a more textured and bold font. This effect makes
my magazine more suitable for the “rock” genre and
the name “Vertigo” is quite abstract mirroring the
effect that “Kerrang” has on its audience. The black
font is more eye catching and again is influenced by
the font and colour that Kerrang magazine uses.
Kerrang has also influenced the placement of the
name and is placed across the top of the magazine
cover.
3. Mise-en-scene of the
images.
• The images that I took, I took in a well-lit photography
studio as I had wanted to illustrate NME’s influence
with the images. I took inspiration from Kerrang’s
quirky photos and wanted the audience to believe that
the models are having fun. Additionally, many music
magazines do take their images at concerts or even
photography studios, this is why I took mine in a
studio as I wanted to make the magazine look as
authentic as possible, this meant replicating this
process.
4. Costumes & Props.
• Regarding costumes, I used casual attire as I wanted to portray
that the models are just regular people and also that they are
having fun. On the cover of my magazine, Sam is wearing a denim
jacket which also subtly hints that the magazine is going to be a
“rock” magazine as denim jackets are seen as “grunge” attire, she
is also seen wearing the same denim jacket on the double page
spread but she is also wearing a dress to add a feminine quality
to the magazine. Furthermore Daniel and Megan are again
wearing casual comfy clothes, they are also seen wearing
piercings to reflect the audience’s appearance and image. Lastly,
David is wearing a plain t-shirt with a quirky image of a cartoon
character, this can be represented as David’s personality and
shown to the audience that this model is fun and outgoing.
5. People.
• Sam was an obvious choice for being on the front cover as her
looks and her overall image made the cover look more authentic
and believable to be a rock magazine. Her style of being typically
“indie” and/or “grunge” made the decision easier to make her the
main topic for my double page and cover. The partnership
between her and David also shows them as a typical “band
romance” and I believe the two show a close relationship on
camera, the answers given in the double page spread further help
to imply this. Similarly to this, Daniel and Megan show the same
and perhaps more in depth chemistry. The image on the contents
page suggests a closeness between the two and can further imply
that they have some form of chemistry. Megan’s piercings made
her the obvious choice for the magazine as she represents and
looks like the target audience for Vertigo.
6. Title font & Style.
• I used many different fonts on my front cover compared to my
contents page and double page spread, the reason for doing so is
so that I could create variety and to further imitate the work of
Kerrang and NME.
• For my front cover, I used several different fonts, many were
completely different but others were near enough exactly the
same with subtle differences. I believe that the variety was key in
making the magazine look authentic. Whereas for my double
page spread, I kept to two basic fonts. The main reason for doing
so was to show and suggest that the article was to be read and
not to portray any kind of creativity. The audience is suppose to
be focussed on the text rather than the exciting headlines
featured on the cover page and contents page.
7. Written Content.
• My double page spread shows a really distinctive
humour that is frequent through interviews in music
magazines especially that of Kerrang. The contents
page has a small section that talks directly to the
audience, this is so that they feel included from the
start also the use of the prizes and competitions show
that Vertigo is orientated around the audience. The
cover page sums up each story rather simply and is
focussed less on the written content but more on
making the audience want to read the written content
inside.
8. Music genre and how your
magazine suggests it.
• Using the storylines and images, I feel I have implied
that the genre of the magazine is in fact
rock/alternative. Also I believe that the cover page has
helped with the use of effects on photoshop, the
outlining of the cover story makes the cover have a
more “rock” genre to it. Furthermore I believe that the
magazine suggests the alternative genre through the
image of Sam located on the front cover and also the
attire of clothing she is wearing.
9. Layout.
• My magazine is to purposely look quite hectic and
busy but also to have some sort of organisation to it. I
feel as though I have succeeded in doing so, but also
the layout isn’t too cluttered and is well spread out,
this implies to the audience that there is a variety of
articles inside the magazine.
