Nobel kitchen case study

Nobel has installed its K-Series kitchen fire suppression system in the new Oblix restaurant
kitchen on the 32nd floor ofWestern Europe’s tallest building, TheShard. Described as the
capital’s most dynamic building, TheShard provides 360 views of up to 40 miles distance.
Opened earlier in the year, Oblix consists
of a 100-seat restaurant and a 100
cover lounge and bar. Its professional
kitchen is designed around a high
performance concept where providing
safe, comfortable and efficient working
conditions are of paramount importance.
Leading up to the opening, and as part
of the overall process, Nobel FireSystems
was commissioned by Halton UK to
design and install a fire suppression
system to meet the demanding fire safety
criteria and at the same time maintain the
aesthetics provided by the rest of the high
quality kitchen equipment.
Given that the stylish show kitchen
is constantly open to view by guests,
kitchen designers Humble Arnold
specified that all equipment needed
to be as minimalist as possible. This
included the fire suppression system
and Nobel’s K-Series was the only system
on the market able to exactly match the
specification with the installed system
now being indiscernible to the restaurant
guests.
All K-Series fire protection systems are
engineered to meet the specific individual
requirements of the kitchen being
protected. The systems are electronically
controlled with no mechanical moving
parts.
Ben Parker, Commercial Director of Nobel
FireSystems commented,
“The combination of proven technology
and great looking design features played
an integral role in Nobel winning this
highly prestigious project. It’s a powerful
combination that has already been put
into practice by discerning restaurant
kitchens throughout Europe”.

Famed fortheirstyle and elegance, restaurants within Caprice Holdings include Le Caprice,
The Ivy, JSheekey and 34 GrosvenorSquare.
No surprise then that when it comes to
kitchen design, only one fire suppression
system is able to satisfy the incredibly
demanding specification made by these
internationally renowned establishments.
Nobel’s K-Series has been fitted in the
kitchens of the restaurants after being
recommended by Allianz Insurance and
then proving its ability to meet the most
stringent fire protection requirements
while also providing the kitchens with a
‘no show’ minimalist system that satisfies
the aesthetic qualities seen throughout
the rest of the décor of each individual
restaurant.
Nobel’s K-Series fire protection
systems are engineered to meet the
specific individual requirements of the
kitchen being protected. The systems
are electronically controlled with no
mechanical moving parts and are
installed in stainless steel to enhance
the working life and endurance of the
product.
Ben Parker, Commercial Director of Nobel
FireSystems commented,
“Caprice Holdings is one of the most
prestigious restaurant groups in world
catering. We’re delighted to have worked
with them on this project and once again
it’s a recognition of our ability to provide
a blend of award winning technology and
superb minimalist design features”.

Nobel FireSystems has fitted its K-Series fire suppression system in Rick & Jill Stein’s new 130 seat
restaurant on Discovery Quay in Falmouth. The system was commissioned by Florigo Frying
Solutions who have been producing frying ranges for over 50 years.
The new restaurant is Rick & Jill Stein’s
first venture away from the Padstow area
and the building has been completely
overhauled to create a fabulous open
plan kitchen and restaurant. The existing
mezzanine floor has been transformed
into an oyster bar serving fresh River Fal
oysters and carefully selected wines.
The open aspect of the kitchen area
required that any fire suppression
system met the aesthetic qualities of the
newly refurbished kitchen meeting the
demanding appearance, functionality
and hygiene criteria set out by the design
team. Not surprisingly, they didn’t then
want to compromise the look of the
kitchen by fitting a fire suppression
system that was at odds with the
aesthetics. Systems that required ugly
pipework to be boxed in or hidden,
or those with nozzles protrude and
manufactured in cheap looking copper
or brass plating were immediately
discounted.
Research showed that Nobel FireSystems
K-Series would meet all the aesthetic
qualities required, and that the Company
already had an enviable reputation for
product efficiency and levels of service
within the catering industry. Another
positive as far as the commissioning team
were concerned was the fact that the
chosen fire suppression system could be
fitted quickly and efficiently.
The Nobel FireSystems K-Series is
now fitted in many of the UK’s and
European leading commercial kitchens,
underlining its ability to provide the
right fire suppression answers to the
most challenging situations. As in
the case of RickStein’s Fish & Chips
restaurant, the K-Series fire protection
systems are engineered to meet the
specific individual requirements of the
kitchen being protected. Every system
is designed following a comprehensive
risk assessment taking into account the
requirement of successful fire suppression
and a client’s interruption potential.
Commercial Director of Nobel Fire
Systems, Ben Parker commented.
“The flexibility of our K-Series system
in terms of meeting the demanding
appearance, functionality and hygiene
criteria posed by the catering specialists
really came through in this project. Not
only that, the new restaurant kitchen
is now protected by a system that has
proved its effectiveness in commercial
kitchen environments throughout Europe.
We are delighted to have been a part of
this exciting development”.

Television chef Jamie Oliver’s new restaurant based in Kingston-upon-Thames is very special.
Based in a former office block, it will serve traditional Italian food at affordable prices with a
range of pasta dishes, a selection of fresh breads, antipasti, salads, grills and Italian desserts.
Doesn’t sound that special you might
be thinking, other than the fact that this
Italian bistro bases its dishes on recipes
from his popular cookbooks.
However, it’s behind front of house that
makes this restaurant so special. Like all
commercial restaurants, a critical success
factor is the design and the look of the
kitchen. In this case the stainless steel
environment was designed to provide
both functionality and good looks – giving
the restaurant staff a kitchen to be proud
of. Not surprisingly, having designed the
kitchen, the catering specialists didn’t then
want to compromise the look of it by fitting
a fire suppression system that jarred with
the aesthetics. Some systems require
pipework to be more obvious and design
requirements mean they cannot be hidden
away while nozzles protrude and much of
the system is manufactured in copper or
brass plating, not stainless steel.
Research showed that Nobel FireSystems
K-Series would meet all the aesthetic
qualities required, and that the Company
already had an enviable reputation for
product efficiency and levels of service
within the catering industry. Another

5. Nobel FireSystems has now commissioned its K-Series fire suppression system in the kitchens of
five restaurants in Manchester’s Trafford Centre. Lastyear, this incredibly busy shopping centre
welcomed over 30 million visitors onto its site, so it’s easy to see why special care and attention
to this particular health and safety issue was carefully considered.
There’s no doubt that all commercial
kitchens pose unique fire risks, gathering
large numbers of people at one time while
also engaging in cooking activities that
inherently pose the risk of fire.
Nobel worked both direct with end users
and through close relationships with
forward thinking companies such as
Technic Air and Dawnvale Bar & Catering
Solutions and now have fire suppression
systems in Shere Khan, Zizzis, Pesto,
Nandos and Chaobaby. They all now have
the assurance that the Nobel K-Series
will continue to give full protection to all
cooking equipment and duct work in their
kitchens.
Working closely with Allianz insurance,
Nobel’s market leading K-Series systems
were designed to ensure maximum
protection to the sites themselves and
theTrafford Centre as a whole and as
such offered both canopy protection and
extended ductwork protection to roof
level. Another important factor for the
commissioning team was that the K-Series
met all the important aesthetic qualities
required by the restaurants and could be
fitted quickly and efficiently by one of Nobel
FireSystems installation teams resulting in
minimum disruption and downtime.
The K-Series fire protection systems are
engineered to meet the specific individual
requirements of the kitchen being
protected and are only designed following
a comprehensive risk assessment taking
into account the requirement of successful
fire suppression and a client’s interruption
potential.
’K-Series’ is one of the UK’s premier
wet chemicals kitchen fire suppression
systems and provides full protection to all
cooking appliances, extract canopy and
the extended duct work. The system is
electronically controlled with no mechanical
moving parts.
Installation comprises of a stainless steel
cylinder containing a highly effective F class
wet chemical liquid designed specifically for
fast flame knock down and fire suppression.
The low, near neutral pH value of the
liquid ensures that there is no damage
to the kitchen appliances, and as a direct
consequence of the efficiency of K-Series
in limiting thevolume of liquid required to
control the situation, there is minimal clean-
up requirements following discharge.
Commercial Director of Nobel FireSystems,
Ben Parker commented.
“The ability of our K-Series system in terms
of meeting all the needs of theTrafford
Centre restaurants has really shown
through. TheTrafford Centre and restaurant
management, as well as their insurers have
the security of knowing that their kitchens
are now protected by a system that has
proved its effectiveness in commercial
kitchen environments throughout Europe”.
Nobel FireSystems is a “Preferred Supplier”
of Allianz Insurance.
