Whilst hate crime has been represented in the media and legislation for many years, particularly in
the US, definitions of the term have been transient and changing. The Home Office issued a report
in 2013 which demonstrated to both the public and law enforcement officials the most recent formal
definition of 'hate crime' in the United Kingdom: "any criminal offence which is perceived, by the
victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice towards someone based on a
personal characteristic" (Home Office, 2013). Reviewing statistics on hate crime in the United
Kingdom, it becomes clear that there are two main official sources for data; the Crime Survey for
England and Wales, and crime recorded by the police. Based on combined data from the CSEW
2011/12 and 2012/13, there was an estimated 278,000 hate crimes taken place on average each year
(Home Office, 2013). However, when compared with the data shown by police recorded crime,
there are huge disparities. Between 2012/13, only 42,236 incidents of hate crime were recorded by
police, which accounts for approximately 1% of all recorded crime (Home Office, 2013).
It can be argued that hate crime is an 'umbrella term' (Johnson, 2013: 317), such crimes are now also
classified by five specific strands, which are annually monitored by police forces in the UK in order

outstanding 91%. The average increase in all forms of hate crimes rose by 41% between 2016–2017

10 Things I Hate About You directed by Gil Junger has enriched my understanding of feminism in
the American society. The Taming of The Shrew, written in 1593, challenges cultural expectations of
women's rights at that time. 10 Things I Hate About You however, was produced to fit the context of
1990's America. A period when a great deal of anxiety was focused on adolescent girls, following
publication of reports which found that the education of adolescent girls was marginalized.
In the 16th century, it may have been a historical fact that Eve was created from Adam's rib, thus the
socially accepted system of patriarchy. The Taming of The Shrew promotes typical 16th century
attitudes towards matrimony and relations between fathers and daughters. Baptista, Katherine's

Freedom of speech and expression are a set of valued rights that allow citizens to openly debate,

flowing reality that has no end. Nothing is ever independent and always has an opposite. To fully
understand the chapters, it is good to know the meaning of the title itself; Dao De Jing translates to

When comparing storylines, Hate and Tea in the Harem each possess a clear theme of despair. While
both formed around this theme, their takes on despair, more specifically the challenges faced
because of despair, are different. The greatest difference between Hate and Tea in the Harem is the
impact of time on despair's challenges and how it influences the concept of survival.
The amount that time is emphasized determines the effect each encounter with despair has on a
story. In Hate, time is emphasized greatly, most evident when the exact hour is pasted in bold white
numbers against a black screen throughout the film. This use mixed with the overall storyline being
within the frame of a day creates the feeling that time is "counting down." The sense of time
counting down reflects the short span characters Saïd, Vinz, and Hubert have before meeting their
ultimate bout with despair. Opposite is seen in Tea in the Harem, where time is not explicitly stated
nor a time frame given. Without a true sense of time, the despair is strung out and not as potent as it
is in Hate. For Tea in the Harem, time does not feel like it is counting down or running out; time
