Characteristics Of Vedic Religion
Chief features of the vedic text re as follows:Vedas and Upanishads are the major source of
information of Vedic Religion. A good knowledge of vedic religion can be gained from the Vedas.
The term Vedas is derived from the term 'Vid' meaning knowledge. There are four types of Vedas:
– Rig Veda
– Atharva Veda
– Sama Veda
– Yajur Veda
Vedic Religion is totally based on the teachings of the vedic text. It shows us the path to live a sin
free life. The main characteristics of the Vedic religion weredeification of the forces of nature,
animism, and primitive magic.
Some of the main features of Vedic religion are as follows:
1) Sin free life: Vedas teaching was to lead the people live a sin free life. According to Vedas we
should help the people and do not show any kind of disrespect to the elders or the gurus.
2) Worship of the force of nature: The people of the vedic time was very much amazed by the forces
of nature like sun, rain, storm, etc. Sun gave them light and energy, rain ... Show more content on

According to Rigveda , there are 33 Gods that are divided into 3 groups of 11 further distributing
into Earth, Air, Water and three divisions of the universe. God were believed to have had a
beginning but it was quite unexpected that they all came into being at the same time. There are four
types of Vedas that explains different aspects of religions, condition of Brahmins and other priests.
Rigveda contains 1028 hymns in total. Rigveda mostly praises male group of deities like Indra,
Varuna and Soma. Indra was depicted as the storm god, Soma, as the sacred plant that cured the
people and Varuna as heaven. Rigveda focused more on symbolism rather than the mythology. The
hymns are mostly based on the symbolism but we can come across some hymns of mythical themes.

Vedic And The Vedic Period
The Vedic period lasted from c. 1750 to 500 BCE. The Vedic texts were arranged when the Indo–
Aryans started to inhabit the Ganges–plain. With this new settlement, it transitioned to an
agricultural society, and in the need for organization the society created a hierarchical government.
The society had to include older habitants of the Ganges–plain, and incorporated them under the
Aryan varnas. They also had to appoint political and religious authority to the Brahmins and
Kshatriyas. The Vedas, also called Śruti, center on the worship of the elements like fire and rivers,
worship of heroic gods like Indra, Varuna and Agni, chanting of hymns and performance of
sacrifices. God Indra became the central deity of the developing Old Indic culture. The philosophy
of Vedanta transformed the Vedic worldview to monistic one. This led to the development of tantric
metaphysics and gave rise to new forms of yoga, such as jnana yoga and bhankti yoga. People
prayed for abundance of children, rain, cattle (wealth), long life and an afterlife in the heavenly
world of the ancestors. This mode of worship has been preserved since then in Hinduism. However,
the primacy of Vedic deities has been seconded to the deities of Puranic literature. According to
Muesse, some of the fundamental concepts like karma, reincarnation and "personal enlightenment
and transformation" did not exist in the Vedic religion. Brahman is a very specific conception of the
Absolute in Vedas. Brahman is neither

INTRODUCTION
The Vedic period also referred to as the vedic age was that period in the Indian History during which
the Vedas, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism were composed. The Indo–Aryans, settled in North
India were very closely related to the Vedic Age and its inception. They played a key role in
bringing in specific religious traditions and customs which is commonly referred to as the Vedic
Civilization. In the civilizations early days, it was a tribal and pastoral society based in the
northwestern parts of the Indian Subcontinent. It spread to the Ganges Plain after 1200 BCE shaped
by the increasing settled agriculture, a hierarchy of four social classes and the unfolding of
monarchial, state–level polities.

Western Influence on Japan Essay
Western Influence on Japan
Japan, as a nation, is a continually changing society. Ever since western nations became involved
with Japan, its changes over recent times have increased at a substantial rate. Japan now faces
cultural, economical and social differences as a result of the western involvement. The involvement
was initiated by the Japanese themselves, beginning during the
Meiji Period1 through current times. As time increases, Japan is slowly becoming more
'westernized' because of western involvement. Western involvement is greatly affecting Japan.
Western involvement began in Japan during the late 1800's. The Meiji dynasty helped to carry it
through, seeing the importance of western ideas.

Genji: A Lover Who Transcends the Boundary of the Heian Court One thousand years ago, when
art, poetry, and literature were flourishing at the height of the Heian court, a noble Japanese lady–
in–waiting named Murasaki Shikibu wrote a story that was not entirely fiction but also not non–
fiction. The Tale of Genji, a story about an impressively handsome "shining" young man named
Genji, was intended to be read by a small elite group of aristocrats, those whom the story itself
depicts. Consumed by their rank that separated them from the common people considered inferior
and subhuman, the high–ranking class was keenly aware of the beauty of nature, music, poetry,
calligraphy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is read, interpreted, and taught in various forms of analytical literature and serves as a model for
literary production for adaptations and translations and re–creation in such media as painting,
drama, books, fashion, food, design, musicals, films, animation, and comics (Shirane 9). Written for
the high–ranking class of the Heian court, The Tale of Genji has extended itself to be a masterpiece
of world literature because the theme of Genji seeking comfort and ultimately true love in the place
of his passed mother transcends the boundaries of the insular world of the Heian court.
Genji is such a relatable character to the contemporary world through his consideration of how
people aesthetically present themselves as a main factor in finding a potential lover. Reading The
Tale of Genji with a historical lens, one can deduct that Genji's considerations of the physical
appearance of women he pursues are not so far off from those considerations of today. The
importance of beauty to Genji's pursuit of love is a notion that holds true in the contemporary world.
Beauty in the Heian period can be characterized by the length and thickness of a woman's hair and
the presence of overlapping sleeves from multiple layers of matching colorful clothing extending
from beyond the screens or draping from the sides of a carriage. "...Carriages were hastily and
unostentatiously decked out, and the sun was already high when

In Dennis Covington’S Book Salvation On Sand Mountain And
In Dennis Covington's book Salvation on Sand Mountain and David Haberman's Journey Through
the Twelve Forests: An Encounter with Krishna, we get two very different experiences of researches
stepping into a world of different religion and perspectives than their own. While both Haberman
and Covington focus on a certain religion and the traditions of its followers, Haberman does a better
job with presenting an accurate representation of Hinduism and the Braj pilgrimage. This is because
Covington's book delves too deeply into his personal journey and opinion without explaining any
details or history of Christianity and the snake–handling, while Haberman gives the reader history of
Hinduism and the significance of the Braj pilgrimage. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While both attempt to take an ethnographic approach, Covington's writing truly does show the
journalistic background he came from, since it came off as almost more story–telling than an actual
research piece. Haberman, on the other hand, provided the reader with a large amount of
background and history on Hinduism, essentially assuming the reader didn't know anything about
Hinduism going into the book. This made it so that while the reader was going on the journey of the
pilgrimage with Haberman, they were also getting the informational and historical background of
Hinduism and why the pilgrimage was performed, something that Covington cannot grasp so well.
This could partly be because Covington assumes his audience is coming from a Christian and
Western perspective, meaning a background and history of Christianity isn't necessary. While
Haberman, on the other hand, makes the same assumption, so a history and background of Hinduism
would be necessary to accurately tell and portray the whole story. It is more appropriate for
researchers to assume that their audience lacks the background knowledge than that they have it,
because there could be missed information or unclear points made by the researchers otherwise.
When explaining the traditions and beliefs of those in the snake–handling church, Covington
presents in the information within the framework of his life and his experiences,

Essay about The Conflicted Japan of Yukio Mishima’s...
The Conflicted Japan of Yukio Mishima's Spring Snow
Yukio Mishima was a revolutionary author. His dramatic public suicide is the perfect capstone to a
life full of turmoil and unrest. Mishima himself was as conflicted as his many stories and plays,
which tend to play out the problem of which direction is Japan heading, and should the nation be
developing that way. Mishima romanticized the samurai and nurtured a lifelong affair with
traditional Japanese theater. At the same time, he admired the West and studied Western art and
literature avidly. The influence is evident, from the decidedly 19th Century British feel of his novel,
Spring Snow, to the many references therein to Western art, literature, film, and philosophy.

Kiyoaki is he son of the Marquis Matsugae, a sort of nouveau–riche during the reign of the Meiji
Emperor. Kiyoaki, a beautiful young man on the path to success in the new Japan, is in love with his
childhood friend, Satoko, the beautiful daughter of the Ayakura family. The Ayakuras are very
prominent, of higher aristocratic class than even Kiyoaki's family, and the Matsugaes view the
closeness of the families as a fortune. Kiyoaki is a moody, pensive boy who gets a thrill out of
alternately rejecting and accepting Satoko's demure advances. Eventually the Ayakuras will wait no
more for Kiyoaki to make his approach for Satoko's hand in marriage, and, faced with another offer
from an impressive suitor, Satoko becomes engaged to be married. Kiyoaki realizes only as the
situation escalates beyond any reparation that he truly loves Satoko. With the help of his friend,
Honda, the son of a judge in the Japanese court system, Kiyoaki begins an affair with her. The two
meet cladestinely for sex, and Satoko eventually becomes pregnant. Having violated multiple social
barriers, and after the realization of Satoko's pregnancy, the couple are found out. Satoko is sent to a
nunnery, and Kiyoaki dies, presumably of heartache and the flu, at the age of 20.
The tragic story follows an arc not at all unlike British literature of the 19th Century. It makes since
that Mishima would use that style to write this novel; after all, given

Ideal Man and Woman in The Tale of Genji Essay
Based on Murasaki Shikibu's "The Tale of Genji" the ideal man and the ideal woman of the Heian
Court can easily be discerned as not truly existing, with the main character, Genji, being the nearly
satirical example of what was the ideal man, and descriptions of the many women in the story as
prescription of the ideal woman with the young Murasaki playing a similar role to that of Genji in
the story.
It is made clear from the beginning of the story that Genji is the example of the ideal man. In
chapter one, "The Paulownia Pavilion (Kiritsubo)", Genji is born to the emperor and a woman of
middle birth as a "wonderfully handsome son" (5) who was with "such marvels of beauty and
character that no one could resent him" (6). From this point ... Show more content on

Although Murasaki Shikibu parodies the idealness of Genji's character by showing even though he
is ideal he is still not perfect, by having Genji admired by the majority of the other characters in the
story she is acknowledging that Genji is an ideal man (or at least as close as one can get in the Heian
Court). "His [Genji's] many flaws are balanced by his charm, taste, generosity, humor, and
sensitivity."
There are both concrete and abstract things that make up the character of the ideal Heian man that
Genji represents. In the realm of the tangible, Genji is able to play all instruments beautifully, paint
with excellence, and compose poetry that is perfect as well as his incomparable beauty (among
many other thing)s, and in the realm of the intangible, Genji was charming and smart and emotional.
Reference to his excellence in everything is made in almost every chapter. "In fact, if I were to list
all the things at which he excelled, I would only succeed in making him sound absurd." (10). With
this particular line Murasaki Shikibu is recognizing that Genji was indeed amazing, but she does not
want to make him sound 'absurd' by listing all the qualities that become him because the list is
inexhaustible. By saying this however she is commenting on the fact that if one were to hear all of
which Genji excelled in people would realize the absurdity of Genji as a character.

Underestimated Due With An Inadequate Surveillance System
underestimated due to an inadequate surveillance system. Though this was partially a result of basic
failures of the surveillance system (such as a lack of timely reporting and a lack of laboratory
confirmation or serotyping), it was also due to a lack of economic interest. In the 1990s, increases in
tourism (driven by cruise ship lines, etc.) stimulated interest in identifying and preventing outbreaks,
which could be bad publicity and thus economically devastating. Likewise, although Ebola
hemorrhagic fever (EHF) has ravaged communities in West Africa since the 1970s, only recently has
the disease captured the attention of Western mass media (CDC, "Outbreaks," 2014). A lack of
mobility in the impoverished rural areas typically affected by ... Show more content on

As a result of this, American economic stimulation in the Caribbean demanded surveillance
increases; the possibility of travel by EHF victims/contacts from West Africa caused hysteria in the
Western world and stimulated intervention from world and American health care authorities.
2. A case study outline for salmonellosis involves the identification of the source and the
surveillance of the disease. Then, a study method is chosen (here, a retrospective case–control study)
to determine risk factor and more. Data is collected and assessed to aid officials in introducing
measures to prevent the spread and correct the behavior that causes it (ranging from improper egg
handling to improper farming techniques). A case study outline for EHF would begin similarly. EHF
has its origins in the jungle, but it is still key to identify a source. After a source is found, all contacts
must be identified. Thus, we see that the case study for EHF is more human–centric. A case–control
study would be the practical study design, as it is less intensive and less expensive. Treating EHF
requires a large amount of money and resources (medical personnel, PPE, etc.). In contrast,
individuals with salmonellosis require adequate fluids to heal and little else. A salmonellosis
outbreak would have a case study outline very similar to that of a norovirus outbreak. One major
difference is person–to–person transmission is possible with norovirus but not

In 1159, Kiyomori of the Taira clan was victorious over the Minamoto clan. Kiyomori murdered all
the adults of the Monamoto clan and forced the children into exile. The emperor rewarded Kiyomori
victory by giving him an advisor position in the government. This event was significant because
Kiyomori was the first warrior in Japan's government. Like the Fujiwara family, Kiyomori desired a
royal bloodline within the Taira clan. So the Taira clan consorted with the imperial family in efforts
to secure an imperial bloodline. Later, Kiyomori obtain a higher government position and more

the exiled Minamoto to overthrow the Taria clan. In 1180, Yoritomo of the Minamoto clan formed

Summary Of ' The Tale Of Genji '

Text Analysis
The Tale of Genji In early eleventh century Japan, circa the year 1021, noblewoman and lady–in–
waiting Murasaki Shikibu published The Tale of Genji, widely renowned as the world's first novel.
The work is set in Shikibu's contemporary Heian period of Japan, in which political and social ranks
dictated society's functioning and heavy prejudices were placed on those deemed unsuitable for the
affairs of public court life. Women fell under this umbrella of outsiders, meant to live primarily
behind screens and closed doors only to be seen by their father and husband. It is believed that
Shikibu wrote such a tale of forbidden romance and whimsical court affairs to bring life to her
fellow women who shared in such a limited existence. This single piece of literature manages to
wholly represent the Heian age of Japanese history, embodying the period's culture and seamlessly
incorporating a broad spectrum of themes of civilization. The Tale of Genji revolves around the
illegitimate son of Japan's emperor and his favorite concubine Kiritsubo. Kiritsubo is easily
influenced by the critics and judgments of the court, falls ill, and dies of jealously. With her having
no concrete political standing, the emperor removes their son from court and assigns him to the
commoner Genji clan (thus giving the boy his name) and names Suzaku, the son he had with Lady
Kokiden as the royal prince. Genji matures to be notoriously

As time went by, some small populations seemed to have migrated north and settle in the Bud Site
or perhaps migrated back and forth to Gasville as evidence suggests that humans lived in both places
in the same period. This site was divided into two time periods. The lower level represents the oldest
period whereas the upper level represents that most recent period. In comparing the amount of
killing that took place between the periods, we can see, based on the evidence found, that a larger
number of killings took place in the oldest period but I find no correlation to any cultural distinction

Great Northern Bunk Beds, Inc.
Introduction
Deciding whether to invest or not is a complicated task for today's companies. Managers need to
make thorough studies, analysing additional costs and revenues, in order to be able to make the most

company does not consider thoroughly the requirements and the outcomes of a particular

difference is that we have two workers instead of one, which will allow GNBB to increase the

Regarding the new location Jessup, the factory will now be able to have a process with multiple

considering that the group decided to assume that the additional worker will imply a decrease in

The following presents the studies examined on the momentum effect in several markets. The
markets have been divided into the United States market, European market, Asian market, and
emerging market.
2.1 Portfolio formation
The most commonly used method in the literature to investigate the existence of momentum effect
was from the study by Jegadeesh and Titman (1993). In this method, the strategy was selecting
stocks based on returns in the past J months and holding them for K months (J month/K month
strategy). It was constructed as follows: At the beginning of each month t during the sample period,
stocks were ranked in ascending order based on their returns in the past J months. J was the
formation period set at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. The portfolio with the highest past returns was called
the winners decile and it contained the best 10% of the sample firms, whereas the portfolio with the
lowest pasts return was called the losers decile and it contained the worst 10% of the sample firms.
In each month t, the momentum strategy bought the winners decile and sold the losers decile, and
then held for K months. K was the holding period set at 3,6,9 and 12 months. Lastly, the strategy
closed out the position started from t–K. To increase the robustness of the test, the strategy usually
included portfolios with overlapping holding periods, where in any given month t, the strategy held
a group of portfolios that were selected in the current month,

Acient and Medieval Western Civilization
Ancient & Medieval Western Civilization At the point when Alexander the Great died in Babylon on
June 11 323 BC, few could have known the prospects for the Macedonians and the Greeks. In the
last twelve years they had fulfilled wonderful victories that brought under their influence more than
ten times the domain Alexander had started with in Greece. It was to be the start of the Hellenistic
Age, a period of one of a kind social and political advancements, that achieved an amalgamation of
old and new. After Phillip of Macedon died the next successor to the throne was his son Alexander
III of Macedon. At the point when Alexander went to the throne, he was just twenty years of age,
despite the fact that he had incredible preparing and experience for somebody so junior. He had

Greek savant, Aristotle, who prepared Alexander's keenness as seriously as Leonidas had prepared

strength and educated virtuoso. Those qualities, consolidated with right on time battles against
northern tribes and at the skirmish of Chaeronea, made the youthful ruler more than primed to

Hinduism, Buddhism, And Classical Hinduism
Hinduism is a very broad term that encompasses a multitude of different backgrounds, traditions,
beliefs, and practices. Hinduism, as we know it today, has gone through many changes. To fully
understand how Hinduism became as it is currently, knowledge of its development over the course
of history is essential. This paper will demonstrate the primary shifts of its central beliefs, practices,
and goals between periods of Early Vedic, Late Vedic, and Classical Hinduism.
Many of the core beliefs of Hinduism have evolved over time, with some becoming increasingly
clearer, and others going from merely an idea into full–fledged beliefs. Karma, Dharma, and the
theory of Samsara and moksha are the core beliefs that almost all who define themselves as a
practicer of Hinduism would accept. The belief of karma started out in the Early Vedic period
merely as "ritualistic action or labor". It transformed into a "moral law" that incorporated the idea
that all actions have fruits, whether good or bad. "Action, which springs from the mind, from
speech, and from the body, produces either good or evil results". This concept of a "law of karma"
where good actions yield good results, and bad in bad, extends from the Vedic idea of consequential
action from the confines of the ritual to everyday life.
Dharma has been, and continues to be, closely related to karma and samsara. In early Vedic religion,
dharma was considered to be the performance, or obligation of Vedic ritual action. Dharma was

Soma and its Effects Essay
Soma and its Effects Throughout India's long and colorful history, there have been a considerable
variety of groups who have left their mark on the land and its people. One of the most influential,
however, were the Aryans. In fact, some of the Aryan customs still remain in modern–day India,
such as cattle demanding great respect, which stems from the Aryan tradition of using such animals
as currency (Chamberlain). The Aryans were mainly pastoral, relying on agriculture to survive
(Bentley and Ziegler 94). They did not have any sort of writing system; instead, what is known
about them is rooted in oral traditions.. This raises the question of religion. The Aryans believed in
various gods and, accordingly, had songs, praises, hymns, and ... Show more content on

(The Rig Veda).
This demonstrates the helpful benefits of Soma. According to this passage, among others contained
in the Rig Veda, Soma gives its users feelings of great freedom and a general sense of
expansiveness. After ingesting the drug, the user is also said to "know no limits" (Rig 238). This can
help promote a healthy mindset as it relieves feelings of stress. Additionally, even gods are depicted
in the Rig Veda as having been helped by the effects of Soma. One of the traditional stories about
Soma concerns Indra, the "Aryan war god and military hero...who ravaged citadels, smashed dams,
and destroyed forts..." (Bentley and Ziegler 94). One significant feat, however, deals with Indra's
defeat of a dragon who "lived in the sky and hoarded water in the clouds" (Bentley and Ziegler 87).
Prior to the defeat, Indra satisfies his thirst by ingesting copious amounts of Soma. According to the
story, after doing this, Indra goes into battle with the dragon and defeats it by throwing thunderbolts
at it. The dragon, then, releases its storage of rain, which "fill seven rivers that flow through
northern India and [bring] life–giving waters to the inhabitants of the region" (Bentley and Ziegler
87). As a pastoral people, the Aryans most likely tell this oral story to

Siddhartha, By Hermann Hesse
Siddhartha Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse was a very interesting book to read. I found it to be a very
interesting way for people, like myself, who are not Hindus, and who do not live in India to learn
about the Indian and Hindu culture and religion without being there physically to experience it. This
book is about a boy, Siddhartha, who is probably somewhere in his teenage years. He lives with his
father, who is a Brahmin, they live together in ancient India. As in many cases, there is an
expectation that Siddhartha is going to follow in his father's footsteps. If this were to take place then
Siddhartha would become a Brahmin and do the same types of things in his life that his father has
done in his. I particularly liked this book because I felt as though it was something that many people
can relate to. While a lot of people, at least not in the United States, do not have the expectation of
becoming a Brahmin, there are a lot of children and young adults who are expected to follow what
their parents have done in their life, or what if not following their exact path then they are expected
to follow the path that their parents have chosen for them. Going back to the book, Siddhartha
continues to struggle after he and his friend hang out together, and everything is perfect, but then, all
of a sudden he doesn't feel anything, he isn't happy, which concerned him because it was something
that would normally make him and other people very happy. Siddhartha, the book, is about

Hinduism, Islam, And Hinduism Essay
Introduction
Religious activities have diversified across the world in the recent past. These activities are often
based on the beliefs of particular groups of people that are often geared toward upholding the social
graces that make a society prosper. Each religion has its unique features that differentiate it from
other religions across the world. The beliefs and practices of various religions often follow a set of
principles laid by the founders of that religion. In most cases, these principles often have a primary
theme that they tend to support. The major religions that are practiced b many people across the
world are Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. The three religions are practiced in different parts of
the world depending on the beliefs of the population in a particular part of the world. Hinduism is a

Man’yōshū vs. Kokinshū and Their Significance
The Man'yōshū and the Kokinshū are perhaps among the most revered and earliest collections of
Japanese poetry. The Man'yōshū, meaning "Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves (or Generations)," is
believed to be compiled by the poet Ōtomo no Yakamochi sometime after AD 759 during the Nara
Period. It contains over 4,000 poems, mostly tanka, that date before the end of the eighth century,
and the writings are somewhat divided chronologically into four periods. Almost two centuries later,
the Kokin waka shū or Kokinshū, meaning "Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern," was
compiled under the imperial command of Emperor Daigo in AD 905 during the Heian Period by
several well–known poets like Ki no Tsurayuki. Unlike the Man'yōshū, the Kokinshū's ... Show

statement to China about the recognition of Japanese poetry as its own. The Man'yōshū, on the other
hand, though it had many concluding envoys for its poetry, did not have a preface written by its
compilers or poets. The Man'yōshū and the Kokinshū also had different poetic forms, styles, and
themes. While the majority of waka in both collections were tanka (short poems), the Man'yōshū
contained much more chōka (long poems) and sedōka (head–repeated poems) than the Kokinshū,
which only contained about ten of these altogether (Miner, 161, 163). By the time of the Kokinshū's
compilation in the Heian Period, both chōka and sedōka had greatly decreased in popularity. In
terms of style, the Man'yōshū portrayed makoto (sincerity) while the Kokinshū displayed miyabi
(courtly refinement) (Varley, 60–61). For instance, in dealing with love, the

One of Howard Gardner 's eight multiple intelligences , bodily kinesthetic intelligence involves the
ability to hold objects, body control and coordination. Possession of bodily kinesthetic intelligence
means an individual can initiate body movements in concert with thoughts, feelings, and ideas.
Sports activities (for example baseball, basketball, football, soccer, etc.) as well as dance, mime,
drama, and martial arts require this ability. Bodily kinesthetic intelligence needs to be developed and
must not be sacrificed in favor of verbal linguistic intelligence and logical mathematical
intelligence, which most schools today heavily emphasize in their curriculum and assessments.

Essay on The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu
Being a student interested in the field of biology, one knows that studying life in the past plays an
important role in the history of organisms that lived on this earth. Similarly, being Japanese,
studying the past of how Japanese were plays an important role in Japanese history. Despite all the
general aspects of life that have changed from the Heian period, the one idea that has definitely not
changed is the romantic relationships between a man and woman. Though the general concept is the
same, from reading The Tale of Genji, it is what was considered the ideal woman and ideal man that

However, as To no Chujo pointed out (Shikibu 21), women that are high rank, have a lot of people
that serve them and make them look better than they are so that a man cannot really know what kind
of personality she may have. Middle rank women on the other hand, have less hidden about her, and
so one can tell what kind of woman she is. This is probably because middle rank women do not have
as much pressure to look good as high rank women have and because they are not expected to be as
great. Thus in this way they are not pampered as much and in a sense show their true colors. From
this it can be concluded that the ideal woman if it were possible, would be someone that was high
rank, but also had a good personality that was not just made to seem good but her servants. For a
woman to have a good personality is definitely an understandable character, but what constituted
'good' personality and character? The Chief Equerry, an older man with more experience in matters
with women in comparison to To no Chujo and Genji, explained that the woman's main duty is to
look after her husband and the household (Shikibu 23). Thus the ideal woman would be one who
was educated and smart enough to take care of the household including preparing a fresh set of
clothes after her husband returns from journey, and keeping the house tidy and clean. She should not
have to ask her husband for every little thing that needs to be done because that would just waste

Women 's Status Of Women
Status of Women in India
To understand the actual status of women It is very essential to study the historical background
thoroughly. The status of women has gone through the different stages from liberation to
subjugation and from subjugation to empowerment. It is not easy to find answers to questions like
when did women start losing their status or who was responsible for this situation. To understand the
status we need to divide the pre independence period in different segments Ancient, Medieval,
British and Contemporary Period. Ancient Period––It cannot be clearly stated whether men and
women got equal rights during the Vedic period. But available sources show that liberal attitudes
and practices towards women did exist. Women were actively involved in religious and social
activities. They had freedom to choose their partner in marriage and a widow was permitted to
remarry.
In ancient India, respect was given to women as mother 's image, a symbol of life, strength and
purity, with immense capacity for patience, sacrifice and sufferings. In the Vedic and Upanishad
period women enjoyed significant freedom so far as political, social and educational activities were
concerned and consequently enjoyed a status and prestige in society. In homes, women were given a
greater position to that of men. As they were treated as the personification of the goddess of wealth,

from the 5th century BCE shows how some women were remembered for good deeds done – and
not just their duties as homemakers. It also recognized the humane side of the Classical Greek
woman. Philosophers and philosophies were developed in the Hellenistic period that allowed
women to join schools of thought that expanded their freedom. Education became available for an
array of Greek women in this time. A little before the Hellenistic age came to be, the ideas of the
loosening of social constructs for women were taking place that led to the foundation of other
schools of thought such as that of Epicureanism and Cynicism. But these ideas came from a couple
of the Classical philosophers. One example of this is a discussion between Plato and Glaucon. The
topic of interest to these men was that of the education of women. The point that was made was that
since there are only a couple of distinctions between men and women, i.e. physical attributes and
things like pot making and bread making – although really only social constructs that forced women

Women Of An Amorous Woman
In his The Life of An Amorous Woman, Ihara Saikaku traces the demise of a woman whose thoughts
and actions were controlled by insatiable lust and sexual desire. She begins as a wife and then
progresses to a court lady–in–waiting, a concubine to a feudal lord, courtesan, priest's mistress,
brothel prostitute, and, finally a streetwalker. Though courtesans did not play a major role in ancient
Japan, by the seventeenth century, the courtesan class was sanctioned by the government to the
extent that official decrees created a separate district to enclose them and put up physical boundaries
that mirrored the division between them and traditional prostitutes. According to Chesemore in her
essay, Women of the Floating World, "as in all areas of Japanese life, attention was paid to the
distinctions in the rank of the various inhabitants of this world, and clearly the courtesan reigned
supreme" (Chesemore, 1990). Saikaku writes that, because of her beauty and talent, she had her
choice of men, and "in the streets she walks with her head held high and does not step aside for
anyone." Far from the traditional Confucian gender roles, the amorous woman can afford to be
haughty, as she was showered with gifts and other luxuries. In Japanese society, at the time when
these works were created, the feminine sexuality of a wife and of a courtesan were seen as two
dichotomous roles that could not possibly be carried out by a single woman, at least in an ideal
world. While it is true many

Sensitive Periods in Early Development Essay examples
Sensitive Periods in Early Development From the moment of conception to the moment we are born
and grow into adulthood, the timing of even the first beginning of our life journey is crucial. Even
the timing of fertilization can be too soon or too late in which will cause the organism to be
destroyed. (The Development of Children, 2nd ed). The mother carrying a baby has a responsibility
to ensure enough nutrition is supplied for the rapid growth of the organism. However it is also
crucial that the fetus also plays a part to survive, by being active and moving to develop.

The unwanted children born weighed less at birth and needed more medical care even though the
mothers were judged to be in good health. Fewer of the children were breast fed, they had more
difficulties in school, and they were referred for psychiatric help more often as teenagers. Also that
by the time they had reached adulthood, many were more likely to have antisocial behavior

first few years of life have crucial effects upon later development and adult characteristics and that
the significance of early infantile experience for later life development has been repeated so

Constributions of Greek Culture
Kings of the Hellenistic era built temples, staffed with priest, for old gods. This way they spread
Greek religious beliefs throughout the Near East. This broadened peoples span of knowledge of
religions, science and philosophy and shaped the world. When people got tired of it and found
rituals unsatisfying, they turned to mystery religions. Civic religions were primarily concerned with
rituals and did not embrace such matters as morality and redemption. People did not inspire deep
religious feelings or satisfy spiritual yearning. Hellenistic culture in general were not tied to a
particular place, instead they were spread throughout the Hellenistic world. People didn't have to
travel to become members. The mystery religions, which incorporated aspects of both Greek and
Eastern religions, all claimed to save their adherents from the worst that fate could do and promised
life for the soul after death. OF the mystery religions the Egyptian Cult of Iris took the Hellenistic
world by storm. In Egyptian mythology, Iris brought her husband Oisris back to life. She promised
to save any mortal that came to her, and her priests asserted that she had bestowed on humanity the
gift of civilization and founded law and literature. Iris became the goddess of marriage, conception,
and childbirth. Philosophical schools fought that people could be truly happy only when they had

Role of Poetry in Narrative Prose of the Heian Period Essay
Japanese literature in the Heian period was most popular for its domination of women's culture
(Hooker, Richard). During this time, a new writing technique was implemented called hiragana.
This was especially accepted as a woman's way of writing since a woman knowing Chinese
characters was considered unladylike. For many years Chinese characters was the only accepted
way of writing, thus the birth of a new writing technique was like a revelation. This incorporation
made a huge impact on Japanese literature, since long before it existed, most techniques were
adopted from the Chinese. The most popular works during this time included various monogatari
such as Ise monogatari and Taketori monogatari, and most popular, Genji monogatari. ... Show more

The earliest full fledge narrative is Taketori monogatari, also known as The Bamboo Cutter. The
author is unknown, but said to be a woman since written in kana, since only men knew kanji and
Chinese characters. It is a story of Kaguya Hime, a moon princess, who is also immortal, and who
was sent to earth as punishment. Her founder finds her in bamboo, when she is only inches tall, and
he takes her in as his own daughter and raises her, loves her as his own, and is devastated when she
has to go back. The imagery in this tale is so strong. You can see and imagine all of the places where
the suitors lie about or actually do go to. The imagination needed to create such an in–depth story is
truly amazing. The most popular and lasting piece is Genji monogatari written by Murasaki Shikibu.
Genji monogatari is most well known for being one of the greatest novels in world literature. The
story is not accepted by all women since it reveals the type of man Genji was. He was known to rape

The Importance Of The Vedic Ritual
On one hand, Brian Smith provides the definition that 'Vedic rituals' refer to the rituals of the Vedic
religion and later Hinduism surrounding the concept of 'Veda', which is defined as 'thought by some
to merely signify a Hindu notion of absolute truth or truth in a general sense' (Smith, 1989, p. 2). On
the other hand, later in his book he refers to Marcel Mauss' definition of magic ('Magic gives every
outward appearance of being a gigantic variation of on the theme of causality...it's exclusive aim is
to produce results' (Smith, 1989, p. 36)), and from this he claims that from the definition the 'Vedic
ritual can alternatively be called magic or a kind of science' (Smith, 1989, p. 36).
Jamison and Witzel argue that 'The central importance of elaborate ritual activity throughout the
Vedic period cannot be overemphasized. However, it is also important to remember that our views
of Vedic ritual are somewhat distorted by the chronology of the text–types that concern the ritual. It
is only at the very end of the Vedic period, in the Śrauta Sūtras, that we have straightforward,
detailed descriptions of ritual' (Jamison & Witzel, 1992, p. 29). In consequence, the meanings
concerned in the practice of Vedic rituals may be overexaggerated by researchers due to the lack of
understanding of the texts written about Vedic rituals.
Interestingly though, throughout hundreds of years, the Vedic rites became more complicated and
had developed countless rules that were entwined with the

Ebola Outbreak Of Ebola Virus
Quisheana Rembert Professor Pearce English 1301 November 23, 2014 Ebola Discovered in 1976
near the Ebola River, Ebola's first two outbreaks in Sudan and Zaire killed the majority, over half, of
the people infected with the disease. Although the natural host reservoir of Ebola has yet to be
found, the virus is believed to be animal–borne. A person gets Ebola from a wild animal and then is
spread throughout the human population through person–to–person transmission. Healthcare
workers providing aide for Ebola victims know that they have a high possibility of contracting the
disease because they are exposed to infected blood and body fluids. It could take from two to
twenty–one days for the Ebola Virus to show symptoms in humans, and ... Show more content on

(National Geographic)" Also, healthcare workers could potentially not want to go to Africa to help if
they are going to be quarantined on arrival back in their home country. Frieden says, "health care
workers might be unwilling to help out in West Africa, making it more likely the disease will keep
landing on American shores. (National Geographic)" Over the short term, some cases of Ebola in the
united states could be prevented, CNN states, but for the long term, it could back fire if highly
trained personnel have more incentive not to go to west Africa to help with the disease. Dr. John
Carlson spent four weeks working with Ebola patients and says that, "healthcare workers already
sacrifice their time to those who need it, and that quarantining them might seem like a punishment,
discouraging people like him to do it again. (CNN)" Some individuals also claim that Ebola is no
worse than other illnesses, such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, or bacterial infections.
They claim that at one point in time these illnesses had once sparked a fire of fear in hearts of people
around the world and that today are looked at as not as serious when people are still also affected by
these diseases daily and also die from them daily. Quarantining people coming from African
countries with Ebola is not only for the health and wellness of the individuals trying to enter back
into the United States but

  • 3. Vedic And The Vedic Period The Vedic period lasted from c. 1750 to 500 BCE. The Vedic texts were arranged when the Indo– Aryans started to inhabit the Ganges–plain. With this new settlement, it transitioned to an agricultural society, and in the need for organization the society created a hierarchical government. The society had to include older habitants of the Ganges–plain, and incorporated them under the Aryan varnas. They also had to appoint political and religious authority to the Brahmins and Kshatriyas. The Vedas, also called Śruti, center on the worship of the elements like fire and rivers, worship of heroic gods like Indra, Varuna and Agni, chanting of hymns and performance of sacrifices. God Indra became the central deity of the developing Old Indic culture. The philosophy of Vedanta transformed the Vedic worldview to monistic one. This led to the development of tantric metaphysics and gave rise to new forms of yoga, such as jnana yoga and bhankti yoga. People prayed for abundance of children, rain, cattle (wealth), long life and an afterlife in the heavenly world of the ancestors. This mode of worship has been preserved since then in Hinduism. However, the primacy of Vedic deities has been seconded to the deities of Puranic literature. According to Muesse, some of the fundamental concepts like karma, reincarnation and "personal enlightenment and transformation" did not exist in the Vedic religion. Brahman is a very specific conception of the Absolute in Vedas. Brahman is neither ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

INTRODUCTION The Vedic period also referred to as the vedic age was that period in the Indian History during which the Vedas, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism were composed. The Indo–Aryans, settled in North India were very closely related to the Vedic Age and its inception. They played a key role in bringing in specific religious traditions and customs which is commonly referred to as the Vedic Civilization. In the civilizations early days, it was a tribal and pastoral society based in the northwestern parts of the Indian Subcontinent. It spread to the Ganges Plain after 1200 BCE shaped by the increasing settled agriculture, a hierarchy of four social classes and the unfolding of monarchial, state–level polities. ORIGIN AND HOME OF THE ARYANS The first rays of the sun pierced through and the Sun of Vedic Culture rose on the horizon of Indian History. Ever since western nations became involved with Japan, its changes over recent times have increased at a substantial rate. Japan now faces cultural, economical and social differences as a result of the western involvement. The involvement was initiated by the Japanese themselves, beginning during the Meiji Period1 through current times. As time increases, Japan is slowly becoming more 'westernized' because of western involvement. Western involvement is greatly affecting Japan. Western involvement began in Japan during the late 1800's. The Meiji dynasty helped to carry it through, seeing the importance of western ideas. "Learn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 12. Summary Of Genji : A Lover Who Transcends The Boundary Of... Eric Sands Professor David T. Bialock EALC 342 September 30th 2014 Genji: A Lover Who Transcends the Boundary of the Heian Court One thousand years ago, when art, poetry, and literature were flourishing at the height of the Heian court, a noble Japanese lady– in–waiting named Murasaki Shikibu wrote a story that was not entirely fiction but also not non– fiction. The Tale of Genji, a story about an impressively handsome "shining" young man named Genji, was intended to be read by a small elite group of aristocrats, those whom the story itself depicts. Consumed by their rank that separated them from the common people considered inferior and subhuman, the high–ranking class was keenly aware of the beauty of nature, music, poetry, calligraphy, ... It is read, interpreted, and taught in various forms of analytical literature and serves as a model for literary production for adaptations and translations and re–creation in such media as painting, drama, books, fashion, food, design, musicals, films, animation, and comics (Shirane 9). Written for the high–ranking class of the Heian court, The Tale of Genji has extended itself to be a masterpiece of world literature because the theme of Genji seeking comfort and ultimately true love in the place of his passed mother transcends the boundaries of the insular world of the Heian court. Genji is such a relatable character to the contemporary world through his consideration of how people aesthetically present themselves as a main factor in finding a potential lover. Reading The Tale of Genji with a historical lens, one can deduct that Genji's considerations of the physical appearance of women he pursues are not so far off from those considerations of today. The importance of beauty to Genji's pursuit of love is a notion that holds true in the contemporary world. Beauty in the Heian period can be characterized by the length and thickness of a woman's hair and the presence of overlapping sleeves from multiple layers of matching colorful clothing extending from beyond the screens or draping from the sides of a carriage. In Dennis Covington’S Book Salvation On Sand Mountain And In Dennis Covington's book Salvation on Sand Mountain and David Haberman's Journey Through the Twelve Forests: An Encounter with Krishna, we get two very different experiences of researches stepping into a world of different religion and perspectives than their own. While both Haberman and Covington focus on a certain religion and the traditions of its followers, Haberman does a better job with presenting an accurate representation of Hinduism and the Braj pilgrimage. This is because Covington's book delves too deeply into his personal journey and opinion without explaining any details or history of Christianity and the snake–handling, while Haberman gives the reader history of Hinduism and the significance of the Braj pilgrimage. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While both attempt to take an ethnographic approach, Covington's writing truly does show the journalistic background he came from, since it came off as almost more story–telling than an actual research piece. Haberman, on the other hand, provided the reader with a large amount of background and history on Hinduism, essentially assuming the reader didn't know anything about Hinduism going into the book. This made it so that while the reader was going on the journey of the pilgrimage with Haberman, they were also getting the informational and historical background of Hinduism and why the pilgrimage was performed, something that Covington cannot grasp so well. This could partly be because Covington assumes his audience is coming from a Christian and Western perspective, meaning a background and history of Christianity isn't necessary. While Haberman, on the other hand, makes the same assumption, so a history and background of Hinduism would be necessary to accurately tell and portray the whole story. It is more appropriate for researchers to assume that their audience lacks the background knowledge than that they have it, because there could be missed information or unclear points made by the researchers otherwise. When explaining the traditions and beliefs of those in the snake–handling church, Covington presents in the information within the framework of his life and his experiences, ... His dramatic public suicide is the perfect capstone to a life full of turmoil and unrest. Mishima himself was as conflicted as his many stories and plays, which tend to play out the problem of which direction is Japan heading, and should the nation be developing that way. Mishima romanticized the samurai and nurtured a lifelong affair with traditional Japanese theater. At the same time, he admired the West and studied Western art and literature avidly. The influence is evident, from the decidedly 19th Century British feel of his novel, Spring Snow, to the many references therein to Western art, literature, film, and philosophy. Mishima was ... Kiyoaki, a beautiful young man on the path to success in the new Japan, is in love with his childhood friend, Satoko, the beautiful daughter of the Ayakura family. The Ayakuras are very prominent, of higher aristocratic class than even Kiyoaki's family, and the Matsugaes view the closeness of the families as a fortune. Kiyoaki is a moody, pensive boy who gets a thrill out of alternately rejecting and accepting Satoko's demure advances. Eventually the Ayakuras will wait no more for Kiyoaki to make his approach for Satoko's hand in marriage, and, faced with another offer from an impressive suitor, Satoko becomes engaged to be married. Kiyoaki realizes only as the situation escalates beyond any reparation that he truly loves Satoko. With the help of his friend, Honda, the son of a judge in the Japanese court system, Kiyoaki begins an affair with her. The two meet cladestinely for sex, and Satoko eventually becomes pregnant. Having violated multiple social barriers, and after the realization of Satoko's pregnancy, the couple are found out. Satoko is sent to a nunnery, and Kiyoaki dies, presumably of heartache and the flu, at the age of 20. The tragic story follows an arc not at all unlike British literature of the 19th Century. • 18. Ideal Man and Woman in The Tale of Genji Essay Based on Murasaki Shikibu's "The Tale of Genji" the ideal man and the ideal woman of the Heian Court can easily be discerned as not truly existing, with the main character, Genji, being the nearly satirical example of what was the ideal man, and descriptions of the many women in the story as prescription of the ideal woman with the young Murasaki playing a similar role to that of Genji in the story. It is made clear from the beginning of the story that Genji is the example of the ideal man. In chapter one, "The Paulownia Pavilion (Kiritsubo)", Genji is born to the emperor and a woman of middle birth as a "wonderfully handsome son" (5) who was with "such marvels of beauty and character that no one could resent him" (6). From this point ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Murasaki Shikibu parodies the idealness of Genji's character by showing even though he is ideal he is still not perfect, by having Genji admired by the majority of the other characters in the story she is acknowledging that Genji is an ideal man (or at least as close as one can get in the Heian Court). "His [Genji's] many flaws are balanced by his charm, taste, generosity, humor, and sensitivity." There are both concrete and abstract things that make up the character of the ideal Heian man that Genji represents. In the realm of the tangible, Genji is able to play all instruments beautifully, paint with excellence, and compose poetry that is perfect as well as his incomparable beauty (among many other thing)s, and in the realm of the intangible, Genji was charming and smart and emotional. Reference to his excellence in everything is made in almost every chapter. "In fact, if I were to list all the things at which he excelled, I would only succeed in making him sound absurd." (10). With this particular line Murasaki Shikibu is recognizing that Genji was indeed amazing, but she does not want to make him sound 'absurd' by listing all the qualities that become him because the list is inexhaustible. By saying this however she is commenting on the fact that if one were to hear all of which Genji excelled in people would realize the absurdity of Genji as a character. • 20. Underestimated Due With An Inadequate Surveillance System underestimated due to an inadequate surveillance system. Though this was partially a result of basic failures of the surveillance system (such as a lack of timely reporting and a lack of laboratory confirmation or serotyping), it was also due to a lack of economic interest. In the 1990s, increases in tourism (driven by cruise ship lines, etc.) stimulated interest in identifying and preventing outbreaks, which could be bad publicity and thus economically devastating. Likewise, although Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) has ravaged communities in West Africa since the 1970s, only recently has the disease captured the attention of Western mass media (CDC, "Outbreaks," 2014). A lack of mobility in the impoverished rural areas typically affected by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result of this, American economic stimulation in the Caribbean demanded surveillance increases; the possibility of travel by EHF victims/contacts from West Africa caused hysteria in the Western world and stimulated intervention from world and American health care authorities. 2. A case study outline for salmonellosis involves the identification of the source and the surveillance of the disease. Then, a study method is chosen (here, a retrospective case–control study) to determine risk factor and more. Data is collected and assessed to aid officials in introducing measures to prevent the spread and correct the behavior that causes it (ranging from improper egg handling to improper farming techniques). A case study outline for EHF would begin similarly. EHF has its origins in the jungle, but it is still key to identify a source. After a source is found, all contacts must be identified. Thus, we see that the case study for EHF is more human–centric. A case–control study would be the practical study design, as it is less intensive and less expensive. Treating EHF requires a large amount of money and resources (medical personnel, PPE, etc.). In contrast, individuals with salmonellosis require adequate fluids to heal and little else. A salmonellosis outbreak would have a case study outline very similar to that of a norovirus outbreak. One major difference is person–to–person transmission is possible with norovirus but not ... The emperor rewarded Kiyomori victory by giving him an advisor position in the government. This event was significant because Kiyomori was the first warrior in Japan's government. Like the Fujiwara family, Kiyomori desired a royal bloodline within the Taira clan. So the Taira clan consorted with the imperial family in efforts to secure an imperial bloodline. Later, Kiyomori obtain a higher government position and more importantly a grandson was born and is heir to the throne. • 26. Summary Of ' The Tale Of Genji ' Jordan Adams 11/25/14 World Civilization I MacKinnon Text Analysis The Tale of Genji In early eleventh century Japan, circa the year 1021, noblewoman and lady–in– waiting Murasaki Shikibu published The Tale of Genji, widely renowned as the world's first novel. The work is set in Shikibu's contemporary Heian period of Japan, in which political and social ranks dictated society's functioning and heavy prejudices were placed on those deemed unsuitable for the affairs of public court life. Women fell under this umbrella of outsiders, meant to live primarily behind screens and closed doors only to be seen by their father and husband. It is believed that Shikibu wrote such a tale of forbidden romance and whimsical court affairs to bring life to her fellow women who shared in such a limited existence. This single piece of literature manages to wholly represent the Heian age of Japanese history, embodying the period's culture and seamlessly incorporating a broad spectrum of themes of civilization. The Tale of Genji revolves around the illegitimate son of Japan's emperor and his favorite concubine Kiritsubo. Kiritsubo is easily influenced by the critics and judgments of the court, falls ill, and dies of jealously. With her having no concrete political standing, the emperor removes their son from court and assigns him to the commoner Genji clan (thus giving the boy his name) and names Suzaku, the son he had with Lady Kokiden as the royal prince. This was a favorite weapon to hunt and perhaps used to hunt larger preys found in the area. The use of end scraper also prevailed for many years and it was probably used to tear up the skin to cover themselves in the cold winter time. Other tools were also found, but a significant lower number. As time went by, some small populations seemed to have migrated north and settle in the Bud Site or perhaps migrated back and forth to Gasville as evidence suggests that humans lived in both places in the same period. This site was divided into two time periods. The lower level represents the oldest period whereas the upper level represents that most recent period. In comparing the amount of killing that took place between the periods, we can see, based on the evidence found, that a larger number of killings took place in the oldest period but I find no correlation to any cultural distinction or diet habit based on this evidence.

  • 42. Hinduism, Buddhism, And Classical Hinduism Hinduism is a very broad term that encompasses a multitude of different backgrounds, traditions, beliefs, and practices. Hinduism, as we know it today, has gone through many changes. To fully understand how Hinduism became as it is currently, knowledge of its development over the course of history is essential. This paper will demonstrate the primary shifts of its central beliefs, practices, and goals between periods of Early Vedic, Late Vedic, and Classical Hinduism. Many of the core beliefs of Hinduism have evolved over time, with some becoming increasingly clearer, and others going from merely an idea into full–fledged beliefs. Karma, Dharma, and the theory of Samsara and moksha are the core beliefs that almost all who define themselves as a practicer of Hinduism would accept. The belief of karma started out in the Early Vedic period merely as "ritualistic action or labor". It transformed into a "moral law" that incorporated the idea that all actions have fruits, whether good or bad. "Action, which springs from the mind, from speech, and from the body, produces either good or evil results". This concept of a "law of karma" where good actions yield good results, and bad in bad, extends from the Vedic idea of consequential action from the confines of the ritual to everyday life. Dharma has been, and continues to be, closely related to karma and samsara. In early Vedic religion, dharma was considered to be the performance, or obligation of Vedic ritual action. Dharma was ... I found it to be a very interesting way for people, like myself, who are not Hindus, and who do not live in India to learn about the Indian and Hindu culture and religion without being there physically to experience it. This book is about a boy, Siddhartha, who is probably somewhere in his teenage years. He lives with his father, who is a Brahmin, they live together in ancient India. As in many cases, there is an expectation that Siddhartha is going to follow in his father's footsteps. If this were to take place then Siddhartha would become a Brahmin and do the same types of things in his life that his father has done in his. I particularly liked this book because I felt as though it was something that many people can relate to. Almost two centuries later, the Kokin waka shū or Kokinshū, meaning "Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern," was compiled under the imperial command of Emperor Daigo in AD 905 during the Heian Period by several well–known poets like Ki no Tsurayuki. Similarly, being Japanese, studying the past of how Japanese were plays an important role in Japanese history. Despite all the general aspects of life that have changed from the Heian period, the one idea that has definitely not changed is the romantic relationships between a man and woman. Though the general concept is the same, from reading The Tale of Genji, it is what was considered the ideal woman and ideal man that were both surprising and thus worth discussing. However, as To no Chujo pointed out (Shikibu 21), women that are high rank, have a lot of people that serve them and make them look better than they are so that a man cannot really know what kind of personality she may have. Middle rank women on the other hand, have less hidden about her, and so one can tell what kind of woman she is. This is probably because middle rank women do not have as much pressure to look good as high rank women have and because they are not expected to be as great. Thus in this way they are not pampered as much and in a sense show their true colors. From this it can be concluded that the ideal woman if it were possible, would be someone that was high rank, but also had a good personality that was not just made to seem good but her servants. For a woman to have a good personality is definitely an understandable character, but what constituted 'good' personality and character? The Chief Equerry, an older man with more experience in matters with women in comparison to To no Chujo and Genji, explained that the woman's main duty is to look after her husband and the household (Shikibu 23). Thus the ideal woman would be one who was educated and smart enough to take care of the household including preparing a fresh set of clothes after her husband returns from journey, and keeping the house tidy and clean. She should not have to ask her husband for every little thing that needs to be done because that would just waste ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But though her father, husband, brothers, and children were tyrants, her mind was never carried away into arrogance." (Lefkowitz and Fant, 16) This inscription from the 5th century BCE shows how some women were remembered for good deeds done – and not just their duties as homemakers. It also recognized the humane side of the Classical Greek woman. Philosophers and philosophies were developed in the Hellenistic period that allowed women to join schools of thought that expanded their freedom. Education became available for an array of Greek women in this time. A little before the Hellenistic age came to be, the ideas of the loosening of social constructs for women were taking place that led to the foundation of other schools of thought such as that of Epicureanism and Cynicism. But these ideas came from a couple of the Classical philosophers. One example of this is a discussion between Plato and Glaucon. The topic of interest to these men was that of the education of women. The point that was made was that since there are only a couple of distinctions between men and women, i.e. physical attributes and things like pot making and bread making – although really only social constructs that forced women to be engaged in these services day in and day out that would have made them better then men at those ... • 66. Women Of An Amorous Woman In his The Life of An Amorous Woman, Ihara Saikaku traces the demise of a woman whose thoughts and actions were controlled by insatiable lust and sexual desire. She begins as a wife and then progresses to a court lady–in–waiting, a concubine to a feudal lord, courtesan, priest's mistress, brothel prostitute, and, finally a streetwalker. Though courtesans did not play a major role in ancient Japan, by the seventeenth century, the courtesan class was sanctioned by the government to the extent that official decrees created a separate district to enclose them and put up physical boundaries that mirrored the division between them and traditional prostitutes. According to Chesemore in her essay, Women of the Floating World, "as in all areas of Japanese life, attention was paid to the distinctions in the rank of the various inhabitants of this world, and clearly the courtesan reigned supreme" (Chesemore, 1990). Saikaku writes that, because of her beauty and talent, she had her choice of men, and "in the streets she walks with her head held high and does not step aside for anyone." Far from the traditional Confucian gender roles, the amorous woman can afford to be haughty, as she was showered with gifts and other luxuries. In Japanese society, at the time when these works were created, the feminine sexuality of a wife and of a courtesan were seen as two dichotomous roles that could not possibly be carried out by a single woman, at least in an ideal world. Even the timing of fertilization can be too soon or too late in which will cause the organism to be destroyed. (The Development of Children, 2nd ed). Also that by the time they had reached adulthood, many were more likely to have antisocial behavior problems. So here we can see from this research that stress also plays a vital role of a healthy developing baby. Some fact (Yarrow, 1961, as cited in Early Experience, 1967) states that also the first few years of life have crucial effects upon later development and adult characteristics and that the significance of early infantile experience for later life development has been repeated so frequently and so seriously that the general effectiveness of this declaration is now almost unchallenged. Bowlby, 1951, (as cited in Early Experience, 1967) quotes that "the prolonged deprivation of the young child of maternal care may have grave and far–reaching effects in his character and so on the whole of his future life." In comparison to this J.B. Watson (1928) also felt passionately about the first two years of a Childs life. He believed they were the most important and that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Constributions of Greek Culture Kings of the Hellenistic era built temples, staffed with priest, for old gods. This way they spread Greek religious beliefs throughout the Near East. This broadened peoples span of knowledge of religions, science and philosophy and shaped the world. When people got tired of it and found rituals unsatisfying, they turned to mystery religions. Civic religions were primarily concerned with rituals and did not embrace such matters as morality and redemption. People did not inspire deep religious feelings or satisfy spiritual yearning. Hellenistic culture in general were not tied to a particular place, instead they were spread throughout the Hellenistic world. People didn't have to travel to become members. The mystery religions, which incorporated aspects of both Greek and Eastern religions, all claimed to save their adherents from the worst that fate could do and promised life for the soul after death. OF the mystery religions the Egyptian Cult of Iris took the Hellenistic world by storm. In Egyptian mythology, Iris brought her husband Oisris back to life. She promised to save any mortal that came to her, and her priests asserted that she had bestowed on humanity the gift of civilization and founded law and literature. Iris became the goddess of marriage, conception, and childbirth. Philosophical schools fought that people could be truly happy only when they had turned their backs on the world and focused full attention on one enduring thing. Depending on the school they ... • 74. Role of Poetry in Narrative Prose of the Heian Period Essay Japanese literature in the Heian period was most popular for its domination of women's culture (Hooker, Richard). During this time, a new writing technique was implemented called hiragana. This was especially accepted as a woman's way of writing since a woman knowing Chinese characters was considered unladylike. For many years Chinese characters was the only accepted way of writing, thus the birth of a new writing technique was like a revelation. This incorporation made a huge impact on Japanese literature, since long before it existed, most techniques were adopted from the Chinese. The most popular works during this time included various monogatari such as Ise monogatari and Taketori monogatari, and most popular, Genji monogatari. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The earliest full fledge narrative is Taketori monogatari, also known as The Bamboo Cutter. The author is unknown, but said to be a woman since written in kana, since only men knew kanji and Chinese characters. Her founder finds her in bamboo, when she is only inches tall, and he takes her in as his own daughter and raises her, loves her as his own, and is devastated when she has to go back. The imagery in this tale is so strong. You can see and imagine all of the places where the suitors lie about or actually do go to. The imagination needed to create such an in–depth story is truly amazing. The most popular and lasting piece is Genji monogatari written by Murasaki Shikibu. Genji monogatari is most well known for being one of the greatest novels in world literature. The story is not accepted by all women since it reveals the type of man Genji was. He was known to rape and kidnap women and a lot of women still get angry with this. Still today, women do not like Genji. • 76. The Importance Of The Vedic Ritual On one hand, Brian Smith provides the definition that 'Vedic rituals' refer to the rituals of the Vedic religion and later Hinduism surrounding the concept of 'Veda', which is defined as 'thought by some to merely signify a Hindu notion of absolute truth or truth in a general sense' (Smith, 1989, p. 2). On the other hand, later in his book he refers to Marcel Mauss' definition of magic ('Magic gives every outward appearance of being a gigantic variation of on the theme of causality...it's exclusive aim is to produce results' (Smith, 1989, p. 36)), and from this he claims that from the definition the 'Vedic ritual can alternatively be called magic or a kind of science' (Smith, 1989, p. 36). Jamison and Witzel argue that 'The central importance of elaborate ritual activity throughout the Vedic period cannot be overemphasized. However, it is also important to remember that our views of Vedic ritual are somewhat distorted by the chronology of the text–types that concern the ritual. It is only at the very end of the Vedic period, in the Śrauta Sūtras, that we have straightforward, detailed descriptions of ritual' (Jamison & Witzel, 1992, p. 29). In consequence, the meanings concerned in the practice of Vedic rituals may be overexaggerated by researchers due to the lack of understanding of the texts written about Vedic rituals. Interestingly though, throughout hundreds of years, the Vedic rites became more complicated and had developed countless rules that were entwined with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(National Geographic)" Over the short term, some cases of Ebola in the united states could be prevented, CNN states, but for the long term, it could back fire if highly trained personnel have more incentive not to go to west Africa to help with the disease. Dr. John Carlson spent four weeks working with Ebola patients and says that, "healthcare workers already sacrifice their time to those who need it, and that quarantining them might seem like a punishment, discouraging people like him to do it again.
