Helping Gifted Learners Soar by VanTassel-Baska
Question 1
Based on the information you have read in the text and any experiences you have had as a teacher, what do you think are the issues gifted students face
as they go through school?
Based from the information provided by VanTassel
–Baska, et. Al. (2009), gifted and talented students face the same issues as their regular peers but
they have different way of viewing these issues and it affects them differently as well. The book discussed different issues that gifted learners face
and recommendations on how to address these issues were also available for teachers, administrators and other school personnel. Also, Carol Strip
Whitney (2011) in her book entitle Helping Gifted Learners Soar discussed stress as a factor that can distract ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Question 2
What are your responsibilities as a teacher in helping students deal with these issues?
Gifted learners face different issues that affect their social, emotional, and cognitive abilities. These students spend one–third of their time with us,
teachers, from Monday to Friday, thus we have lots of responsibility to help them develop and hone their skills and discover new skills and at the
same time help them face all the issues in their lives. Before we can even help these children, we need to know our responsibilities as educators. In the
book Social and Emotional Curriculum With Gifted and Talented Students, authors Day–Vines, Patton, Quek and Wood (2009) pointed out an
important role that school personnels need to employ. They said that all school personnel need to demonstrate cultural competence. Why is there a
need for all school personnel to demonstrate culture of competence? School personnel must have the knowledge and awareness of the different cultural
characteristics in order to avoid race–based biases and stereotypes. Whether we are truthful or not, reality is, we have preconcive notions about people
/children of a specific race, skin color, etc. have a specfic ability/capability. An example would be,

Who Is Dr. Carson A Hero
"Gifted Hands" Dr. Carson is a hero to many people. He is loved and appreciated due to his success in saving the lives of many. To become the great
man he is now, he had came across many obstacles on the way. Some of the obstacles which had come across were bad temper, bullying, and
having a hard time in education. Dr. Carson had learned to overcome his obstacles. When Dr. Carson was young he had a really bad temper. He
would get mad really easily and attack whomever was arguing with. For example he almost hit his mother with a hammer because she didn't buy him
the right kind of clothes for school. He also almost killed someone with a pocket knife but luckily the person who he had attacked was wearing a
leather belt and when the knife hit

Self-efficacy and Factors Influencing Motivation of Students
Self–efficacy is the belief that someone has the inherent ability to achieve a goal. A student who has a high self–efficacy allows himself to believe that
he can be successfully academically.(Bozo & Flint, 2008) He believes that a challenging problem is a task that can be mastered This student is more
committed to work in the classroom. (Schunk,1991). On the other hand, a student who has a low level of self–efficacy is likely to be academically
motivated. He is more likely to avoid a task that is difficult, give up, make excuses, or lose confidence in his abilities (Margolis & McCabe, 2006).
This failure becomes a self–fulfilling prophecy. Teachers need to find ways to motivate these students by increasing their self–efficacy. A... Show more

Also, I should be sure to engage the student in conversation about why he was successful in an attempt to relate effort to success. This results in a
higher self–efficacy as the student is able to complete more tasks and, therefore, believe in his abilities. Goal setting is another useful strategy. The
student identifies short term academic goals. An assignment is broken up into smaller tasks and immediate rewards and/or feedback are given as
the child reaches each short term goal. Goal setting can be used with any of the strategies mentioned above. For example, in the writing assignment
he could say, I will follow all my writing steps as I complete a personal narrative." A goal for the ABC chart could be "I will fill in 16 out of 26 letters
in my ABC chart." As the student identifies that he has reached his goal, he realizes that he can be successful and his self–efficacy slowly increases.
The student begins to make positive judgements that he can be academically successful. It is vital for all teachers to determine how to foster the
development of each child's self–efficacy to support increase motivation. There are many activities that can be created in the classroom to help a
student have a higher self–efficacy. Regardless of the strategy, eachactivity helps the student feel that he or she can be academically successful.
Many arguments have been made regarding the fairness and discrimination of standardized

Benefits Of Gifted And Gifted Students
Introduction
According to the National Association for Gifted Children, "The term 'gifted and talented," when used with respect to students, children, or youth,
means students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in such areas as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership
capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those
capabilities" (Definitions of Giftedness, 2017, pg. 1). Gifted and talented students require learning that challenges them but also allows them to explore
their creativity and come up with their own conceptions on what they are learning about and how it relates to their lives. While gifted and talented
students are on a higher learning level and need to be challenged you still have to understand that they are also still children. Gifted and talented
students can struggle just like other students and also might have behavioral problems like other students as well.

The Challenges In The Novel 'Gifted Hands'
In the novel, "Gifted Hands", the character Ben, the author, faced many challenges. One of them being the leaving of his father when he was 8 years
old. The other one, his horrible temper, the ending of the first semester at Yale final exams, where he just wanted to give up and didn't believe in
himself, and the final and hardest one, the separation of the twins. There were many other challenges Ben went through all of his life, but I believe
these were some of the main ones that changed him, made him think differently, and gave him more knowledge. Even though he went through all these
challenges and tough times, he managed to overcome them. Ben never gave up no matter what he was facing. The first challenge that Ben faced was the
leaving of his father when he was 8. Ben was really close to him, many afternoons he will look at the clock and wait to see his father, "I'd rush outside
to wait for him. I'd watch until I saw him walking down our alley, "Daddy!" "Daddy!" I'd yell", Pg 10 –Carson. When his mother told him that his
father wasn't coming back, "Those words broke my heart", –Carson. Ben was really sad and questioning. Even though he was broken, he figured out
that it was better without his father, "No more silence, no more fear why my parents wouldn't talk" Pg 12 –Carson. He later on learned how to handle
deep hurt by forgetting, "And not knowing the recollection beyond his mitial leaving", Pg 12 –Carson. Ben's father's leaving was one of the first

How Faith Created Gifted Hands
Thesis Statement: Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, is an exceptionally well written, book and movie that inspires and tells a story of a pediatric
neurosurgeon who overcame adversity with faith and determinism.
I.Introduction: An imagination combined with faith is the birth of a beautiful creation, Ben Carson is a great example of this combination. Ben Carson's
autobiography was assigned to me by Professor Harkins–Pierre. I chose to evaluate this book as well as the inspirational movie because I believe it
serves extremely important lessons to others. My points of focus will be based on Carson's faith, his commitment to excellence, his family and his

intelligent man and his SAT scores were great for Yale, there were other students who had better. He started to realize that the classwork at Yale was
not so easy and Carson began to doubt himself. Carson explained this moment in his life where he began to ask himself if Yale was the right choice
for him. (Carson) In the movie Cuba Gooding, played Carson where he showed how much Carson doubted himself to his girlfriend was whom was

Gifted Hands Movie And Book Comparison
Many people have read the book Gifted Hands. In this book Ben's mom and dad both have similarities and differences. Even though Ben's parents are
separated, they are both still a part in Ben's life. With this being said, they both love Ben in their own different ways. Let us now consider a few
examples of this.
To begin with, Ben's mom has always stayed with her family that she is with now her whole life. On the contrary, Ben's dad had what I call a "side
family". What I mean by this is that, in the book Gifted Hands it stated that Ben's dad was cheating on his mom with another woman, and family. Also
Ben's mom was always there for Ben and supports him with all of the decisions. On the other hand, his father is never there to even be there

Carson's Character Changes
In Gifted Hands, a couple incidents took place that differed from the actual event. For example, in the film, they show Ben as a kid who is constantly
struggling throughout life. However, in reality, "Became an outstanding student and is one that always knows the answers"("Zondervan"). Additionally,
the reason why Ben became successful was altered in the movie. Carson's Character was shown as a struggling person who had nothing in life.
According to Carson, during the actual event, "Ghetto youngster to one of the most respected neurosurgeons in the world" Even though the director did
not completely have everything align with the actual event in his film, Carter's movie still proved to be a very informing moving. Carter's dramatic

The Success Of A Circle Time
Successful Circle Time Circle time is one of the most fun and creative times of the school day. Preschool children, typically ages three to around six,
are very hands one and mobile. They want to move about and explore things around them. For any teacher struggling with circle time and keeping the
attention of their students I would suggest multiple tips on how to keep students engaged. One is to make circle time interactive and get the students
involved in the circle time. An example would be giving each student a part in a song or a story to act out. Another suggestion would be to start
each circle time with a song and dance so that students can release some of the energy that they have and be ready to focus during circle time. It is
also a great idea to have students move around during circle time so they are not getting restless and moving in anyway they want (). Two very key
things for circle time to be a success is to be consistent with circle time and have it daily so that students know what to expect. I have observed
activities like reviewing the calendar, weather, and reading a short book. Finally, one must be aware and patient of the disturbances that will pop up
during circle time. Know that students are all developing in different ways and not one is like the other. While one student may sit attentively for a
prolonged period of time, another may not be at that point yet. Plan circle time around your students needs and it will be a very happy experience for

Gifted Hands Ben Carson Character Traits
In the novel, Gifted Hands by Ben Carson, it slowly unravels a story of a young delinquent, as he becomes the awe inspiring surgeon; who gave
children a second chance. The main character of this autobiography is Ben Carson, who withholds many good character traits. One main character trait
that Mr. Carson has been his determination. Frequent times throughout the novel, Mr.Carson is struggling with trying to help other patients. In the
novel, it states that. " One my way to the operating room I ran into another neurosurgeon senior to me and a man I highly respect because of his work
with trauma accidents... 'Don't do it,' he said, as he walked away from me. 'Your wasting your time.' His attitude amazed me, but I didn't dwell on it.

Mr. Carson has determination. Even though a highly respectable surgeon told him not to waste his time on it; Mr. Carson still when ahead with the
surgery, and saved Bo–Bo's life. Another character trait that Mr.Carson has is that he has been a very caring person. He cares a lot for all of his
patients, working the hardest to save their lives. In the novels it shows that, " Momentarily I forgot about Craig and myself and I felt sorry for
him, I kept saying to myself, I feel so sorry for him." I ran down the hall the hall and caught up with him. I hugged him and said, "Don't feel so
bad,Ben." I went back to the room. A patient had gone home that day, and the nurses let me spend the night in the unused room. As I lay on the bed, I
stared at the ceiling. I was angry, so angry." This quotation proves the fact that Mr.Carson cared a lot for all of his

Gifted Hands Reflection
The portrayal of Dr. Ben Carson's life in 'Gifted Hands' was truly inspirational and motivational. Through the depiction of his life, we realize that a
person can still thrive despite encountering numerous adversaries. In the first part of the film, the audience saw a younger Ben, a kid who was
hot–tempered and quite gullible, so far from who he is now. As a child, Ben was easily influenced and pressured by his friends– he succumbed to peer
pressure as any adolescents would. Those specific attributes were manifested when Ben had had enough of his classmates' bullying and it became more
evident when he became friends with a reckless and corrupt boy from his new school. Although Ben possesses the aforementioned negative traits, we
also discovered some outstanding traits of his. 'Gifted Hands' depicted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ben Carson was truly an exceptional and an accomplished person; however, the audience came to know that he hasn't always been like that. Ben came
from a broken family since his father broke all contact and left him when he was still young; thus, he lived with his mother and his older brother.
Besides the fact that he comes from a broken family, he is also a man of color. At that certain part of history, it is common to belittle and discriminate
people belonging to the black ethnicity, which makes Ben's life tougher and more arduous. In addition to the aforementioned issues Ben faced, we
learned that he was having a difficult time reading which explains his unsatisfactory grades and a little later it was also revealed that his mother also
has a learning disability since she also can't read. Since the said obstacles greatly affected his view of himself and his personality, he had a fairly low
self–concept. Due to the incessant bullying and teasing of his classmates, he was quite ashamed of himself and he believed that he was not enough –
that he was not destined to be someone outstanding and

Gifted Programs In Schools
Gifted programs are generally present in many of today's schools; however, many of these programs do very little to improve and increase the
productivity of the students that are in these programs. These programs, in theory, should keep the gifted student engaged in their school work as well
as challenged to learn more. By encouraging creativity and lifetime achievement and learning, gifted programs helps these twice–exceptional students
to be successful in their education and in the world around them by instilling the love of learning in them at a young age. By "put[ting] in the right

Gifted Hands is an inspirational novel based around the life of Ben Carson, from his rugged upbringing in inner–city Detroit to his position as director
of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital at age 33. The novel foregrounds Carson's struggle to defy all odds – aided by his iron will,
tremendous faith, respect, meekness and an unconditional devotion to God.
Carson displayed great determination and dedication from a young age. He thrived to be ahead of his studies and went the extra mile for the
well–being of his education. After I started pulling ahead in school, the desire to be smarter grew stronger and stronger. Carson focused more on being

Throughout the auto–biography Carson demonstrates an extraordinary amount of trust and faith in the Lord. A pristine example of Carson's faith is
portrayed before a major chemistry final. Although Carson was unprepared, he laid the situation before God and was able to miraculously score well
in the exam. Carson lived a Christ–oriented life and the blessings were endless. His faithfulness demonstrated the power in living in such a way.
Carson was no ordinary man. His intricate way of thinking was like no other. One of the most obvious and well–known achievement is his concept of
incorporating lasers in neurosurgery to nullify complexities faced whilst operating. He knew there was an easier way and took the initiative to act upon
his ideas. Comparing Carson's accomplishments and initial circumstances serves as living proof that anyone can be an influential figure in our society.
Carson's radiant demeanor shone throughout the course of his life. His pleasant behavior and respect for others produced a very likable individual.
Although there were countless incidents where Carson could bad–mouth white folk, he never resorted to racial prejudice and whole–heartedly believed
in equality amongst everyone.
The problem with many of the intellectually talented is the mentality they withhold which automatically grants them bragging rights. Carson on the
other hand was a silent achiever, very humble about his success

Character Analysis Of Will Hunting
Analysis of Will Hunting Advice for the Foster Parents The fictional character Will Hunting is an orphan so I will address his foster care parents
in my paper. Will Hunting is a brilliant underachieving gifted student. As his foster care parents you need to realize he has learned to underachieve
early in his academic because he has already mastered the material easily and he has not had to push himself to succeed academically (Ruff,
Deborah, 2011). Will has never been placed in a nurturing environment so you will need to realize he uses his humor as a defense mechanism. If
you learn to appreciate his humor you realize it is an extremely enjoyable part of his personality (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). He will need tons of
emotional support because as a gifted child he experiences the world around him in a heightened state (Cross, Tracy, et al. 2018). You should be
upfront with Will about his IQ and abilities this will lead him to better deal with his abilities (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). You will need to help him
learn to prioritize to better help his gifts flourish and on the same hand you will also have to help him learn how to let go of things that are out of
his control (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). Try to help Will pursue his math abilities and other things he finds extremely interesting (Ruff, Deborah, 2011).
The stress of raising a gifted child can be more unique then raising other children. It has been compared to raising a special needs child (Renati,
Robert, et al., 2016, p.6). One study found gifted students long term happiness is directly related to whether they thought their parents were warm and
supportive (Renati, Robert, et al., 2016, p.6). The main sources of stress for parents raising gifted children have been identified as: lack of parenting
alliance, stress that stems from finding helpful educational strategies, lack of persistence, and lack of management of family routines (Renati, Robert,
et al, 2016, 13–14). So if you can come up with a plan between the two of you to try to combat these issues ahead of time they may save you stress in
the long run. The relationship between the parents or care takers of the gifted child must be strong in order to aid in the success of raising the

Theoretical Frameworks Of Learning, Discipleship And...
Discuss how children learn with a focus on one area from a selection of current priorities drawing on relevant literature, research and practice from a
critical perspective
This essay will discuss two theoretical frameworks of learning, Behaviourism and Constructivism. Then examine the orginin, need and importance for
ability grouping specifically to aid the gifted student. It will then analyse evidence of a child from block School Experience (BSE) 1 and relate theory
to practice.
Learning can sometimes appear to be a very simple thing, understanding how we learn is not as straightforward as it may seem. Numerous definitions
and theories of learning indicate the complexity of the process.
David Fontana (1985) considered learning as a relatively persistent change in an individual's behaviour due to experience, associating the outcome of
learning as the behaviour. In contrast Norah Morgan and Juliana Saxton (1991) argue "effective teaching depends upon recognizing that effective
learning takes place when the students are active participants in 'what's going on'" demonstrating a more constructivist approach to learning where
more attention is paid to what is going on inside the child's head and the mental processes taking place.
Behaviourism ignored the need to consider internal mental states or consciousness, describing all behaviour as being caused by external stimuli. The
works of behaviourists Ian Pavlov (1849–1936) and Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904–1990) explored

Gifted Students and Social Stigma Essay
Gifted Students and Social Stigma
Philosopher Benedict Spinoza said, "Man is a social animal" (Kaplan 278). The desire for social acceptance, whether recognized or denied, is part of
human culture. People yearn for it, obsess over it, and alter themselves to obtain it. Humans can spend their entire lives unsuccessfully attempting to
achieve a level of social status they believe will validate them. Acceptance is denied for superficial reasons varying from clothing to cliques. However,
it is also denied due to innate elements of personality. Stigmatizing others for a natural characteristic not only seems unwarranted but also unfair. Yet, a
stigma is imposed daily on gifted adolescents who neither deserve, nor know how to deal with, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They want to know what something is but also why it is that way. Teachers can take this curiosity to be offensive and oftentimes the student is viewed
negatively by their peers due to an adoption of the teacher's negative attitude, thus beginning the social stigma (Johnson 27).
Another standard, "educational" treatment of gifted students is to separate them from the class. Because the gifted student has surpassed the majority
the teacher isolates the child with a separate advanced activity and returns to the majority. In these situations the gifted student and his/her peers
become accustomed to this "different" status. The gifted student becomes an outsider in relation to the group by default, due to his/her above average
abilities. Educational treatment of the gift denies the student the opportunity to learn to socially interact at a young age. Gifted students never become
accustomed to peer interaction because this system is perpetuated upward throughout the grade levels. And unfortunately, in an educational atmosphere
where grades are a primary focus, poor interpersonal skills are more likely to be tolerated than poor work–related skills (Wolfle 3). It becomes a norm
for the student to work alone and his/her social and psychological needs are ignored.
The students themselves report that one prevailing stigmatism of being gifted is being neglected, not

These characteristics can also cause the already identified students to not achieve to their fullest due to stress and lack of motivation.
It is very hard to understand why students don't perform to their full potential when you know they are capable. This is known as underachievement.
"Both early researchers and more recent authors have defined underachievement in Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted 3 terms of a
discrepancy between a child's school performance and some ability index such as an IQ score." (Delisle & Galbraith, 2002). "Gifted children who do
not succeed in school are often successful in outside activities such as sports, social events, after–school jobs, talent or hobby interests." (Delisle &
Galbraith, 2002). So we wonder what causes the underachievement.
Bainbridge (2014), believes these problems result from gifted children being able to intellectually understand abstract concepts but are then unable to
deal with those concepts emotionally. Ones physical development may also lead to an inability to complete a task that they are capable of
intellectually envisioning. "Perfectionism can lead to fear of failure, in turn causing a gifted child to avoid failure by refusing to even try something."
(Bainbridge, 2014). This often leads to a lack of motivation among students.

Ward, 2005); President Obama's defunding of the Javits Act, as part of the federal budget in 2012 (Equity) (Stephens, 2011), and the passing of the
TALENT Act under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 (NAGC, n.d.). In short, the federal government's support for gifted education has
been inconsistent at best, and when compared to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which "guarantees all children between the
ages of three and twenty–one with specifically identified disabilities a 'free appropriate public education' in the least restrictive environment in
conformance with an Individualized Education Program" (Ward, 2005, p. 58) funding and support by federal government is severely lacking (Brown,
2008; Ward, 2005). Nevertheless, the TALENT Act (2015) is encouraging forgifted education as it promotes professional development to support
high–ability students, seeks to recognize and respond to excellence gaps, makes student achievement data publicly available, and advocates for research
and the distribution of research that supports best practices in gifted education (NAGC, n.d.). Likewise, the Javits Act continues to give hope to those
who have been historically underrepresented in gifted education through the first of its two priorities, which is to support "Initiatives [that] develop and
scale up models serving students who are underrepresented in gifted and talented programs" (USDOE, 2017).
Nomination and Confirmatory Practices
In Comparing Apples and Oranges: Fifteen years of definitions of giftedness in research, Carman (2013) identified nine gifted identification methods
she found through reviewing 103 articles. These methods were intelligence tests (IQ), achievement tests, academic achievement (Grades), teacher,
parent, counselor, and committee recommendation, extracurricular activities, and additional sources of evidence (i.e. Performance–Based
Assessments). Carman (2013) also wrote, in her article, that there appears to be some confusion between giftedness and intelligence since definitions of
giftedness often align more with the latter than the former. The fact that there are blurred lines between these terms might explain why there has been
an overreliance on IQ

Differentiation: What is it? Essay
Differentiation: What is it?
Today in education different abilities are being acknowledged on a regular basis. So a common description being used for the "perfect" classroom
which accounts for the variety of instruction and activities is a differentiated classroom. This phrase is thrown around and many teachers may not
understand how a differentiated classroom works. "In a differentiated classroom, the teacher assumes that learners have differing needs.
Therefore the teacher proactively plans a variety of ways to 'get at' and express learning" (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 3). Planning for a variety of teaching
strategies does not mean giving more work to the smart children. Instead the teacher must assess who understands the material, ... Show more content

For example, if a third grade student can read at a fifth grade level then when it comes time for children to read books independently, the student
should not be restricted to books which are considered to be appropriate for third grade students. Interest differentiation allows teachers to create an
assignment which will involve an area that really interests students (Tomlinson, 2001). So if a science project is assigned to students and one child has
aspirations of becoming a veterinarian then the teacher may encourage the student to research an animal for the project. The learning profile approach
"ensures that a student has a way of 'coming at' materials and ideas that match his preferred way of learning" (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 73). An example
may be that a teacher lectures on a topic, shows examples of the idea, and has children use materials to illustrate the topic. By creating numerous
approaches to the information, the teacher allows for more students to comprehend the material.
Any approach to differentiating classrooms may take more time and planning than a traditional lesson of straight lectures. Yet teachers should notice
that increased lessons which challenge students at the level which they are performing will allow all students to grow (Tomlinson, 2001). Making sure
every student is growing is a job of the teacher. Ways in which lessons can be differentiated is endless (Tomlinson, 2001).

Sonya Carson's husband left her to raise the boys on her own. With little education, Sonya struggled to provide for her boys. She worked two or three
jobs at a time as a domestic servant. As a family, they would pick vegetables for local farmers in exchange for a part of the crop. Ben's mother's
diligence and creativity to provide for her boys had a tremendous influence on, Ben and Curtis. (Ben Carson, biography) Gregg and Deborah Lewis
state (2002) "Sonya Carson also provided a strong support system for the boys with their church family by attending church regularly. One Sunday as
the pastor gave the message, Ben felt God call him to become a missionary doctor." (p. 16) After

Labeling And The Rights Of All Students
Labeling and the rights of all students to access education Rights baseds and needs based Selecting a school for your child can be based on
various reasons depending on what you are looking for whether it is scholarships they offer, location even public perception (Hobsons, 2015).
Ideally every parent wants the utter most best for their child. Unfortunately some parents get lost and focus mainly towards a specific achievement
or offer which may not always be within the best interest of the child. For example Bryson goes to South High School as they supply the best
football opportunities. While he is doing well in physical education in class work is suffering, falling behind as they don't offer Bryson the one on
one attention he needs to succeed. "Labeling is a process of creating descriptors to identify persons who differ from the norm" (White, 2014).
"Labeling is required to be included in special education (Government, 2005). Under current law, to receive special education services, a child must
be identified as having a disability and, in most cases, must be further classified into one of that state's categories, such as mental retardation or
learning disabilities" (Heward, 2010). Some parents struggle with the idea of placing their beloved child in a special school unwilling to accept the
'Label' (Heward, 2010). This 'Label' can stop parents from allowing their child to receive the best possible treatment in developing their Childs
knowledge and physical/personal

The Importance of Maintaining Gifted Programs: Schools...
Many people are of the opinion that special education programs for gifted children are an unnecessary burden on tightly–budgeted and under–funded
school systems, but this is actually far from the truth. The gifted are perhaps the most neglected group of special needs children in almost every school
district. Because many people assume that the gifted do not need extra attention, gifted programs are often the first program to be cut when budgets are
reduced, but I suggest that they be the last to go. These children have profound talents and are just as deserving of extra attention as children who are
physically or mentally handicapped.
Gifted children experience many difficulties, including loneliness and ridicule. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gifted children have a different learning style that allows them to absorb vast amounts of material much faster than the average child. The current
trend in education of introducing a new idea and then building upon it is simply too slow for them. It has been likened to "feeding an elephant one
blade of grass at a time – he will starve before he realizes someone is trying to feed him" (Tolan 3). These children may demonstrate what appear to
be poor academic skills, causing them to appear to be less capable (Oettinger 11). Sloppy handwriting can signify that a child's hands cannot keep
pace with his quick mind; some are poor spellers because they do not see words as collections of single letters and some may even have trouble with
memorization (Tolan 3). Gifted programs allow them to use their skills in ways that are better suited to their learning style.
Many parents and educators are intrigued to note that gifted children often function on several different levels of intelligence and development at the
same time. It is not unusual to find a six year old that can read at a seventh grade level, but has the comprehension of a fourth grader with the
temperament of a three year old. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that adults who work closely with the gifted realize that this discrepancy is
common and to be

A barrier that has sparked concern in a Career and Technical education (CTE) program with students with disabilities is appropriate and reasonable
accessibility from class to class. These physical barriers to academic services may include lack proper elevator or ramps within a multiple–storied
structure as well as heavy doors and unreachable washroom essentials. Additionally, transportation to and from a CTE school may cause barriers.
Students at the post–secondary level also experience difficulty in securing accessible students housing. Some schools are still inaccessible to students

At my school, a magnet school with three (s) area of concentration might provide a rigorous curriculum that may not allow for trial and error or have
little time for experimentation with student learning. It may have limited room for the use of different teaching style and methods, which can be an
immense barrier to inclusion. The requirement for entry into the magnet school is according to the district policy. Students must be considered that
have a minimum of 2.0 GPA; however, students must then maintain the required GPA for the magnet school which is 2.5 upon acceptance. For a
special need student who have met the minimum district GPA requirement and is accepted, sometimes struggle with the high demand and rigorous
learning environment. The resources available for a special needs child are provided, especially if they have an Individualized Education Learning Plan

Common Core State Standards Curriculum Essay
According to the Common Core website, Common Core State Standards Curriculum is a set of high quality academic standards for kindergarten
through twelfth grade in math, English language, and literature ("About the Standards"). Through the Common Core State Standards, the public
education system has over–stepped its bounds. One way the education system has done this is through entering the homeschool and private school
systems. Another way the public education system has overstepped its bounds is by placing the Common Core Curriculum in the Advance Placement
and college placement exams. Also, the Common Core State Standards reduce education for gifted students. One way the program does this is by not
providing the intellectual challenges that these students need. An additional way is that the Common Core Curriculum is so expensive that schools
cannot afford to have supplementary learning for gifted students. Finally, the Common Core State Standard leaves students unprepared for college. One
way Common Core Standards leaves students unprepared is that the Common Core aligned college placement tests hurt students in the college
admittance process. Additionally, Common Core curriculum does not prepare students for college–level classes. Common Core State Standard
Curriculum should be rejected from the public school system because the public education system has over–reached its boundaries, it reduces the
education for gifted students, and it leaves students unprepared for

Persuasive Essay On Gifted Education
There are many debates going around about gifted education. Should we fund it? Should we not? Should we support it, or shouldn't we? Many
articles that I've read are on both sides. Everyone has their own opinion to whether or not we should support it. But in my opinion I think we should
support both sides of the education system, the low–achieving and the higher–achieving students. Gifted education classes can help students challenge
themselves and their peers around them. In article one, America's Future Depends on Gifted Students, they believe that we should support gifted
education programs. I highly agree with the statement, 'Insisting that gifted children will 'be fine' if we cut these programs is a disservice to these

I believe that segregation and gifted education are complete polar opposites and should not be compared at all. Although, it states that there is an
abundance of case–study evidence across geography, grade–level and demography demonstrating that low achieving students perform better and high
achieving students perform no worse when all students are exposed to a high level curriculum. High achieving students perform no worse because they
are still not being challenged by higher curriculum like the low achieving students. If they were placed in a higher, separate class than low achieving
students, they would be able to be challenged in ways that they never have been before. In article three, Tracking Students By Ability Produces Results,
they discovered that high–ability students benefit the most from high–ability peers. Also, an experiment in Kenya proved that grouping students into
classrooms based on prior achievement benefits all students. I do believe that placing students in classrooms with peers of similar ability is all around
better. It is better because they can all challenge each other and they are all exposed to a much higher education than students with lower achieving
capabilities. I believe if students know that they are "gifted" they will try and not pursue and challenge themselves. On the other hand, students who are
chosen by lottery into gifted education programs will challenge themselves to be like their other higher

"Educaching can allow students the opportunity to explore multiple subject areas in depth while traveling to different places within the world

had only heard of geocaching and I had not ever thought about using it in my classroom to differentiate for gifted students. I learned that
geocaching can be an excellent tool for sparking interest in new topics in unmotivated gifted students. One of the ways the article suggested
differentiating when working with gifted students during the geocaching experience was to assign students different roles during the process
(Brown B., K., et al., 2015). I thought this was an excellent idea for gifted students in middle school. My favorite idea from the article that I
thought I might be able to apply to my classroom was performing an educaching experience then teaching students to use "Microsoft Excel to
organize and graph data" (Brown B., K., et al., 2015, p. 99). The article did not provide information on how to fund the educaching experience. It did

Essay on The Power of Education in a Young Mens Life
Throughout life young adults and adolescents tend to be faced with many challenges that alter the out come of their adult years by either benefiting
or harming it. This is evident in "The Pact," by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt, and "Gifted Hands: A Ben Carson Story," by
Ben Carson. These two books are similar in multiple aspects such as: the influences, and environment the characters are exposed to; the characters
goals and struggles; and the purpose for writing the books and the lesson learned from reading the books. All of these aspects together develop an
underlying theme that both stories have in common. The theme is that education is the key to a tranquil life, meaning life will be easier if you

Likewise they had alike attitudes because at one moment of all of the men's lives they realized that education was the key to accomplishing their goal,
and made it their main priority. The authors from "The Pact" implemented their "education centered" attitudes, primarily after they decided they would
become doctors, when they began to threat their academics as a healthy completion to motivate and help each other (Davis et.al). However, Ben Carson
possessed this goal and attitude earlier than the other men, but he still had the same ones. Ben Carson's mother is who gave him the educational
mindset because she would never let Carson settle for less (Carson 30). Carson has also had the goal of becoming a doctor since he was a little boy due
to being exposed to missionary doctors in the Bible (Carson 24–25).
Moreover, the four men were also composed of several differences, primarily in their struggles and triumphs. The three men from "The Pact" were
forced to deal with the conflicts that came with living in a rough neighborhood. While, Ben Carson had to face racism from people in his school
environment. Davis et.al cites that the roughness of their neighborhoods were so bad to where it became the norm and how many just accept the fact
that they will never make it out and end up dying there (66–67). Ben Carson mentions one key moment

Three Most Important Ideas For Success In Dr. Ben Carson's...
Dr. Ben Carson has had many successes in his life, and in his biography, Gifted Hands, he explains his formula for being successful in life. The
formula given for success in life is explained in his THINK BIG acronym. The three most important ideas for success in life from THINK BIG is
having major honesty, books, and God. Honesty plays a major role in accomplishing goals. Not only is it necessary in life, but can determine the
outcome between a good or bad future. As stated in the text, "And honesty was an important principle he'd learned from his mother at church. Ben
immediately turned around and walked back to the store, where he returned the ten–dollar bill to the clerk and explained what had happened. She gave

According to the text, "Ben also realized that he had known the answer because he'd been reading books. As that sank in, he began to wonder,
What if I read books about all my subject? Maybe I would know more than anyone in the class, more than the kids who tease me and call me
names." If it wasn't for reading Ben may not have gotten where he is today. Not only did books change his life, he saw things from a new
perspective. Ben used reading as an advantage to comprehend and learn more, and like Ben, we should use reading as an advantage to getting
farther in life. Furthermore, success also lies in the hands of God. For example, "'Thank you God," he prayed. "You gave me a miracle today!" In
Ben's moment of struggle, he reached for God's help, and no doubt God created a miracle. Ben life was a hassle, but not only did he have God with
him, he had faith that God's plans were for a reason. Likewise, we should reach out to god and in moments of doubt ask him for help. In conclusion,
some of the most important ideas for success in life are honesty, books, and God. Although many other ideas may be just as good, the importance of
the three had a major impact in Ben's life, and like so, these also had an impact on many

The Development Of Gifted Education
Historical roots School students' involvement in research projects is a new demand of 21st century due to some factors: globalization trend,
development of human capital, implementation of the reform on the support and development of schools for gifted students and the poor results of
Kazakhstani students in PISA. Since this paper is focused on research projects in the framework of gifted education, it is essential to determine the
concepts of "children as researchers" and "gifted education" by answering the question "What" and then, discuss the reasons of "Why". The
historical roots of the concept of children as researchers started being popular because of the change of children's status in society ( Hallet and Prout
2003; Alderson and Morrow, 2004). The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989) designated children as social actors
in their own rights. Specifically, children should be enlightened and engaged about all solutions that influence their lives (as cited in Kellett, 2005,
p.4). According to some scholars (Kirby and Bryson, 2002; Johnson et al., 1998), since that time the growth of children as participants as well as
co–researchers is apparently seen. Initially, children were involved in some data collections, thus most of research projects are still being manipulated
by adults and children are not considered as potential partners (Kellett, 2005, p.5). Nevertheless, the definition of

How Did Ben Carson Impact Personal Life
1. How did Ben Carson's story impact your personal life? Give 2–3 examples.
Ben Carson's story impacted my personal life in many ways. Ben Carson is an inspiration for numerous aspiring doctors or other careers in the
medical field. He is also an inspiration to people of color and financially unstable people. He has surpassed multiple hardships and is a very successful
person today. Everyone who is active in currents events know who he is because he is running for the Republican Presidential Election and/or his
astounding and notable surgeries.
One major aspect in his life that inspired me that I have the potential of fulfilling my dreams is his humble beginnings. Carson was not as
privileged as he is today; he was an inner city kid born and raised in Detroit by only his mother. His mother made sure her children had morals and
an education because she herself did not go to school past the third grade and was not able to read well. In the beginning of his school years, he was
at the back of his class and made fun of by the other children because he did not excel in his classes. He turned this around and became top of his class
due to his mother enforcement of studious habits. Despite his past, he was accepted into one of the most elite universities in the world, Yale University.

Mindfulness, Super Brain Yoga And Square Breathing
Mindfulness, Super Brain Yoga and Square Breathing
Mindfulness is a yoga practiced used to self–assess for awareness in the present moment (Leland, 2015) When practiced in the moment, mindfulness
has been shown to reduce the negative effects of excessive worry, in the moment, and self–doubt (Jennings & Jennings, 2013). Mindfulness is an
important component of Eastern religions but has been used in schools to help students increase their awareness of their focus and anxieties in an
attempt to overcome them. In the classroom, the purpose of mindfulness is not an attempt to permanently move mountains, but rather to find a way
around the stumbling block in the mental path.
Yoga has been shown, throughresearch, to reduce anxiety (Kirkwood, Rampes, Tuffrey, Richardson, & Pilkington, 2005). Yoga is widely practiced
by groups of people for various reasons and with ranging levels of devotion. Some seek out yoga and other Eastern religions to seek a higher plane
of knowledge and inner peace. Others simply want the benefits of the calming exercises. Some parents may even become upset with the idea of
teaching religion in school, but in this aspect, yoga and its benefits are easily taught and can be easily practiced and mastered in a classroom for
amazing benefits for students who need to learn to assess their anxiety levels and address them in a way to help alleviate some of the anxiety that is
negatively impacting their focus and learning.

Argumentative Essay On Gifted Children
Arbitrary, too narrow in scope, and biased are just a few of the things that come up when psychologists, teachers and parents discuss how to
determine if children are gifted and talented. In the United States, 6 to 10 percent of school age children are labeled "gifted" and are placed into
classes that cater to their advanced abilities (National Association of Gifted Children, 2014). School age children, in some states, can be as young as
four years old. A lot of the controversy starts right there: how can four year olds be expected to take a challenging IQ assessment and then have their
score on that test determine their classroom placement for the next 13 years? Lewis Terman, an American psychologist and professor at Stanford
University, was a pioneer in the understanding of gifted children and their place in the American education system. He was majorly influenced by
Alfred Binet and eventually revised the Binet–Stanford scale so that it could be used in the United States, where it is now known as the Stanford–Binet
Intelligence Scale (Human Intelligence, 2013). A major contribution of his was the definition of what makes a child gifted. According to Terman, an
Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of at least 130 marks giftedness, he even believed that any child who scored a 132 or higher was a genius (Steinberg,
Bornstein, Vandell, & Rook, 2011). To measure intelligence, he expanded on William Sterns' equation stating that IQ is a person's mental age and
chronological age

Helping Gifted Learners Soar By VanTassel-Baska

  • 1. Helping Gifted Learners Soar by VanTassel-Baska Question 1 Based on the information you have read in the text and any experiences you have had as a teacher, what do you think are the issues gifted students face as they go through school? Based from the information provided by VanTassel –Baska, et. Al. (2009), gifted and talented students face the same issues as their regular peers but they have different way of viewing these issues and it affects them differently as well. The book discussed different issues that gifted learners face and recommendations on how to address these issues were also available for teachers, administrators and other school personnel. Also, Carol Strip Whitney (2011) in her book entitle Helping Gifted Learners Soar discussed stress as a factor that can distract ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ed. Waco, Texas. Question 2 What are your responsibilities as a teacher in helping students deal with these issues? Gifted learners face different issues that affect their social, emotional, and cognitive abilities. These students spend one–third of their time with us, teachers, from Monday to Friday, thus we have lots of responsibility to help them develop and hone their skills and discover new skills and at the same time help them face all the issues in their lives. Before we can even help these children, we need to know our responsibilities as educators. In the book Social and Emotional Curriculum With Gifted and Talented Students, authors Day–Vines, Patton, Quek and Wood (2009) pointed out an important role that school personnels need to employ. They said that all school personnel need to demonstrate cultural competence. Why is there a need for all school personnel to demonstrate culture of competence? School personnel must have the knowledge and awareness of the different cultural characteristics in order to avoid race–based biases and stereotypes. Whether we are truthful or not, reality is, we have preconcive notions about people /children of a specific race, skin color, etc. have a specfic ability/capability. An example would be,

  • 3. Who Is Dr. Carson A Hero "Gifted Hands" Dr. Carson is a hero to many people. He is loved and appreciated due to his success in saving the lives of many. To become the great man he is now, he had came across many obstacles on the way. Some of the obstacles which had come across were bad temper, bullying, and having a hard time in education. Dr. Carson had learned to overcome his obstacles. When Dr. Carson was young he had a really bad temper. He would get mad really easily and attack whomever was arguing with. For example he almost hit his mother with a hammer because she didn't buy him the right kind of clothes for school. He also almost killed someone with a pocket knife but luckily the person who he had attacked was wearing a leather belt and when the knife hit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Self-efficacy and Factors Influencing Motivation of Students Self–efficacy is the belief that someone has the inherent ability to achieve a goal. A student who has a high self–efficacy allows himself to believe that he can be successfully academically.(Bozo & Flint, 2008) He believes that a challenging problem is a task that can be mastered This student is more committed to work in the classroom. (Schunk,1991). On the other hand, a student who has a low level of self–efficacy is likely to be academically motivated. He is more likely to avoid a task that is difficult, give up, make excuses, or lose confidence in his abilities (Margolis & McCabe, 2006). This failure becomes a self–fulfilling prophecy. Teachers need to find ways to motivate these students by increasing their self–efficacy. A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, I should be sure to engage the student in conversation about why he was successful in an attempt to relate effort to success. This results in a higher self–efficacy as the student is able to complete more tasks and, therefore, believe in his abilities. Goal setting is another useful strategy. The student identifies short term academic goals. An assignment is broken up into smaller tasks and immediate rewards and/or feedback are given as the child reaches each short term goal. Goal setting can be used with any of the strategies mentioned above. For example, in the writing assignment he could say, I will follow all my writing steps as I complete a personal narrative." A goal for the ABC chart could be "I will fill in 16 out of 26 letters in my ABC chart." As the student identifies that he has reached his goal, he realizes that he can be successful and his self–efficacy slowly increases. The student begins to make positive judgements that he can be academically successful. It is vital for all teachers to determine how to foster the development of each child's self–efficacy to support increase motivation. There are many activities that can be created in the classroom to help a student have a higher self–efficacy. Regardless of the strategy, eachactivity helps the student feel that he or she can be academically successful. Many arguments have been made regarding the fairness and discrimination of standardized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Benefits Of Gifted And Gifted Students Introduction According to the National Association for Gifted Children, "The term 'gifted and talented," when used with respect to students, children, or youth, means students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in such areas as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities" (Definitions of Giftedness, 2017, pg. 1). Gifted and talented students require learning that challenges them but also allows them to explore their creativity and come up with their own conceptions on what they are learning about and how it relates to their lives. While gifted and talented students are on a higher learning level and need to be challenged you still have to understand that they are also still children. Gifted and talented students can struggle just like other students and also might have behavioral problems like other students as well. Camp Appalachia For my observations and field experience I got to volunteer with a program called Camp Appalachia. Camp Appalachia is located at the Vickory House at University of North Georgia's Dahlonega campus and is put on by Dr. Donna Governor who is a UNG professor who runs part of UNG's Appalachian studies center along side Dr. Rosann Kent. • 6. The Challenges In The Novel 'Gifted Hands' In the novel, "Gifted Hands", the character Ben, the author, faced many challenges. One of them being the leaving of his father when he was 8 years old. The other one, his horrible temper, the ending of the first semester at Yale final exams, where he just wanted to give up and didn't believe in himself, and the final and hardest one, the separation of the twins. There were many other challenges Ben went through all of his life, but I believe these were some of the main ones that changed him, made him think differently, and gave him more knowledge. Even though he went through all these challenges and tough times, he managed to overcome them. Ben never gave up no matter what he was facing. The first challenge that Ben faced was the leaving of his father when he was 8. Ben was really close to him, many afternoons he will look at the clock and wait to see his father, "I'd rush outside to wait for him. I'd watch until I saw him walking down our alley, "Daddy!" "Daddy!" I'd yell", Pg 10 –Carson. When his mother told him that his father wasn't coming back, "Those words broke my heart", –Carson. Ben was really sad and questioning. Even though he was broken, he figured out that it was better without his father, "No more silence, no more fear why my parents wouldn't talk" Pg 12 –Carson. He later on learned how to handle deep hurt by forgetting, "And not knowing the recollection beyond his mitial leaving", Pg 12 –Carson. Thesis Statement Of The Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story How Faith Created Gifted Hands Thesis Statement: Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, is an exceptionally well written, book and movie that inspires and tells a story of a pediatric neurosurgeon who overcame adversity with faith and determinism. I.Introduction: An imagination combined with faith is the birth of a beautiful creation, Ben Carson is a great example of this combination. Ben Carson's autobiography was assigned to me by Professor Harkins–Pierre. • 8. Gifted Hands Movie And Book Comparison Many people have read the book Gifted Hands. In this book Ben's mom and dad both have similarities and differences. Even though Ben's parents are separated, they are both still a part in Ben's life. With this being said, they both love Ben in their own different ways. Let us now consider a few examples of this. To begin with, Ben's mom has always stayed with her family that she is with now her whole life. On the contrary, Ben's dad had what I call a "side family". What I mean by this is that, in the book Gifted Hands it stated that Ben's dad was cheating on his mom with another woman, and family. Also Ben's mom was always there for Ben and supports him with all of the decisions. On the other hand, his father is never there to even be there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, in the film, they show Ben as a kid who is constantly struggling throughout life. However, in reality, "Became an outstanding student and is one that always knows the answers"("Zondervan"). Additionally, the reason why Ben became successful was altered in the movie. Carson's Character was shown as a struggling person who had nothing in life. According to Carson, during the actual event, "Ghetto youngster to one of the most respected neurosurgeons in the world" Even though the director did not completely have everything align with the actual event in his film, Carter's movie still proved to be a very informing moving. • 10. The Success Of A Circle Time Successful Circle Time Circle time is one of the most fun and creative times of the school day. Preschool children, typically ages three to around six, are very hands one and mobile. They want to move about and explore things around them. For any teacher struggling with circle time and keeping the attention of their students I would suggest multiple tips on how to keep students engaged. One is to make circle time interactive and get the students involved in the circle time. An example would be giving each student a part in a song or a story to act out. Another suggestion would be to start each circle time with a song and dance so that students can release some of the energy that they have and be ready to focus during circle time. It is also a great idea to have students move around during circle time so they are not getting restless and moving in anyway they want (). Two very key things for circle time to be a success is to be consistent with circle time and have it daily so that students know what to expect. I have observed activities like reviewing the calendar, weather, and reading a short book. Finally, one must be aware and patient of the disturbances that will pop up during circle time. Know that students are all developing in different ways and not one is like the other. While one student may sit attentively for a prolonged period of time, another may not be at that point yet. Plan circle time around your students needs and it will be a very happy experience for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gifted Hands Ben Carson Character Traits In the novel, Gifted Hands by Ben Carson, it slowly unravels a story of a young delinquent, as he becomes the awe inspiring surgeon; who gave children a second chance. The main character of this autobiography is Ben Carson, who withholds many good character traits. One main character trait that Mr. Carson has been his determination. Frequent times throughout the novel, Mr.Carson is struggling with trying to help other patients. In the novel, it states that. " One my way to the operating room I ran into another neurosurgeon senior to me and a man I highly respect because of his work with trauma accidents... • 12. Gifted Hands Reflection The portrayal of Dr. Ben Carson's life in 'Gifted Hands' was truly inspirational and motivational. Through the depiction of his life, we realize that a person can still thrive despite encountering numerous adversaries. In the first part of the film, the audience saw a younger Ben, a kid who was hot–tempered and quite gullible, so far from who he is now. As a child, Ben was easily influenced and pressured by his friends– he succumbed to peer pressure as any adolescents would. Those specific attributes were manifested when Ben had had enough of his classmates' bullying and it became more evident when he became friends with a reckless and corrupt boy from his new school. Although Ben possesses the aforementioned negative traits, we also discovered some outstanding traits of his. 'Gifted Hands' depicted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ben came from a broken family since his father broke all contact and left him when he was still young; thus, he lived with his mother and his older brother. Besides the fact that he comes from a broken family, he is also a man of color. At that certain part of history, it is common to belittle and discriminate people belonging to the black ethnicity, which makes Ben's life tougher and more arduous. In addition to the aforementioned issues Ben faced, we learned that he was having a difficult time reading which explains his unsatisfactory grades and a little later it was also revealed that his mother also has a learning disability since she also can't read. Since the said obstacles greatly affected his view of himself and his personality, he had a fairly low self–concept. Character Analysis Of Will Hunting Analysis of Will Hunting Advice for the Foster Parents The fictional character Will Hunting is an orphan so I will address his foster care parents in my paper. Will Hunting is a brilliant underachieving gifted student. As his foster care parents you need to realize he has learned to underachieve early in his academic because he has already mastered the material easily and he has not had to push himself to succeed academically (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). Will has never been placed in a nurturing environment so you will need to realize he uses his humor as a defense mechanism. If you learn to appreciate his humor you realize it is an extremely enjoyable part of his personality (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). He will need tons of emotional support because as a gifted child he experiences the world around him in a heightened state (Cross, Tracy, et al. 2018). You should be upfront with Will about his IQ and abilities this will lead him to better deal with his abilities (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). You will need to help him learn to prioritize to better help his gifts flourish and on the same hand you will also have to help him learn how to let go of things that are out of his control (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). Try to help Will pursue his math abilities and other things he finds extremely interesting (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). The stress of raising a gifted child can be more unique then raising other children. It has been compared to raising a special needs child (Renati, Robert, et al., 2016, p.6). One study found gifted students long term happiness is directly related to whether they thought their parents were warm and supportive (Renati, Robert, et al., 2016, p.6). The main sources of stress for parents raising gifted children have been identified as: lack of parenting alliance, stress that stems from finding helpful educational strategies, lack of persistence, and lack of management of family routines (Renati, Robert, et al, 2016, 13–14). So if you can come up with a plan between the two of you to try to combat these issues ahead of time they may save you stress in the long run. Discuss how children learn with a focus on one area from a selection of current priorities drawing on relevant literature, research and practice from a critical perspective This essay will discuss two theoretical frameworks of learning, Behaviourism and Constructivism. Then examine the orginin, need and importance for ability grouping specifically to aid the gifted student. It will then analyse evidence of a child from block School Experience (BSE) 1 and relate theory to practice. Learning can sometimes appear to be a very simple thing, understanding how we learn is not as straightforward as it may seem. Numerous definitions and theories of learning indicate the complexity of the process. David Fontana (1985) considered learning as a relatively persistent change in an individual's behaviour due to experience, associating the outcome of learning as the behaviour. In contrast Norah Morgan and Juliana Saxton (1991) argue "effective teaching depends upon recognizing that effective learning takes place when the students are active participants in 'what's going on'" demonstrating a more constructivist approach to learning where more attention is paid to what is going on inside the child's head and the mental processes taking place. Behaviourism ignored the need to consider internal mental states or consciousness, describing all behaviour as being caused by external stimuli. The works of behaviourists Ian Pavlov (1849–1936) and Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904–1990) explored ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Gifted Students and Social Stigma Essay Gifted Students and Social Stigma Philosopher Benedict Spinoza said, "Man is a social animal" (Kaplan 278). The desire for social acceptance, whether recognized or denied, is part of human culture. People yearn for it, obsess over it, and alter themselves to obtain it. Humans can spend their entire lives unsuccessfully attempting to achieve a level of social status they believe will validate them. Acceptance is denied for superficial reasons varying from clothing to cliques. However, it is also denied due to innate elements of personality. Stigmatizing others for a natural characteristic not only seems unwarranted but also unfair. Yet, a stigma is imposed daily on gifted adolescents who neither deserve, nor know how to deal with, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They want to know what something is but also why it is that way. Teachers can take this curiosity to be offensive and oftentimes the student is viewed negatively by their peers due to an adoption of the teacher's negative attitude, thus beginning the social stigma (Johnson 27). Another standard, "educational" treatment of gifted students is to separate them from the class. Because the gifted student has surpassed the majority the teacher isolates the child with a separate advanced activity and returns to the majority. In these situations the gifted student and his/her peers become accustomed to this "different" status. The gifted student becomes an outsider in relation to the group by default, due to his/her above average abilities. Educational treatment of the gift denies the student the opportunity to learn to socially interact at a young age. Gifted students never become accustomed to peer interaction because this system is perpetuated upward throughout the grade levels. And unfortunately, in an educational atmosphere where grades are a primary focus, poor interpersonal skills are more likely to be tolerated than poor work–related skills (Wolfle 3). It becomes a norm for the student to work alone and his/her social and psychological needs are ignored. It is very hard to understand why students don't perform to their full potential when you know they are capable. This is known as underachievement. "Both early researchers and more recent authors have defined underachievement in Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted 3 terms of a discrepancy between a child's school performance and some ability index such as an IQ score." (Delisle & Galbraith, 2002). "Gifted children who do not succeed in school are often successful in outside activities such as sports, social events, after–school jobs, talent or hobby interests." (Delisle & Galbraith, 2002). So we wonder what causes the underachievement. Bainbridge (2014), believes these problems result from gifted children being able to intellectually understand abstract concepts but are then unable to deal with those concepts emotionally. Ones physical development may also lead to an inability to complete a task that they are capable of intellectually envisioning. "Perfectionism can lead to fear of failure, in turn causing a gifted child to avoid failure by refusing to even try something." (Bainbridge, 2014). This often leads to a lack of motivation among students. McCoach & Siegle (2005), believe that motivated students appear to

Persuasive Essay On Gifted Education Ward, 2005); President Obama's defunding of the Javits Act, as part of the federal budget in 2012 (Equity) (Stephens, 2011), and the passing of the TALENT Act under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 (NAGC, n.d.). In short, the federal government's support for gifted education has been inconsistent at best, and when compared to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which "guarantees all children between the ages of three and twenty–one with specifically identified disabilities a 'free appropriate public education' in the least restrictive environment in conformance with an Individualized Education Program" (Ward, 2005, p. 58) funding and support by federal government is severely lacking (Brown, 2008; Ward, 2005). Nevertheless, the TALENT Act (2015) is encouraging forgifted education as it promotes professional development to support high–ability students, seeks to recognize and respond to excellence gaps, makes student achievement data publicly available, and advocates for research and the distribution of research that supports best practices in gifted education (NAGC, n.d.). Likewise, the Javits Act continues to give hope to those who have been historically underrepresented in gifted education through the first of its two priorities, which is to support "Initiatives [that] develop and scale up models serving students who are underrepresented in gifted and talented programs" (USDOE, 2017). Nomination and Confirmatory Practices In Comparing Apples and Oranges: Fifteen years of definitions of giftedness in research, Carman (2013) identified nine gifted identification methods she found through reviewing 103 articles. These methods were intelligence tests (IQ), achievement tests, academic achievement (Grades), teacher, parent, counselor, and committee recommendation, extracurricular activities, and additional sources of evidence (i.e. Performance–Based Assessments). Carman (2013) also wrote, in her article, that there appears to be some confusion between giftedness and intelligence since definitions of giftedness often align more with the latter than the former. • 22. Differentiation: What is it? Essay Differentiation: What is it? Today in education different abilities are being acknowledged on a regular basis. So a common description being used for the "perfect" classroom which accounts for the variety of instruction and activities is a differentiated classroom. This phrase is thrown around and many teachers may not understand how a differentiated classroom works. "In a differentiated classroom, the teacher assumes that learners have differing needs. Therefore the teacher proactively plans a variety of ways to 'get at' and express learning" (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 3). Planning for a variety of teaching strategies does not mean giving more work to the smart children. Instead the teacher must assess who understands the material, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, if a third grade student can read at a fifth grade level then when it comes time for children to read books independently, the student should not be restricted to books which are considered to be appropriate for third grade students. Interest differentiation allows teachers to create an assignment which will involve an area that really interests students (Tomlinson, 2001). So if a science project is assigned to students and one child has aspirations of becoming a veterinarian then the teacher may encourage the student to research an animal for the project. The learning profile approach "ensures that a student has a way of 'coming at' materials and ideas that match his preferred way of learning" (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 73). An example may be that a teacher lectures on a topic, shows examples of the idea, and has children use materials to illustrate the topic. By creating numerous approaches to the information, the teacher allows for more students to comprehend the material. Any approach to differentiating classrooms may take more time and planning than a traditional lesson of straight lectures. Yet teachers should notice that increased lessons which challenge students at the level which they are performing will allow all students to grow (Tomlinson, 2001). Making sure every student is growing is a job of the teacher. Ways in which lessons can be differentiated is endless (Tomlinson, 2001). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many people are of the opinion that special education programs for gifted children are an unnecessary burden on tightly–budgeted and under–funded school systems, but this is actually far from the truth. Because many people assume that the gifted do not need extra attention, gifted programs are often the first program to be cut when budgets are reduced, but I suggest that they be the last to go. The current trend in education of introducing a new idea and then building upon it is simply too slow for them. It has been likened to "feeding an elephant one blade of grass at a time – he will starve before he realizes someone is trying to feed him" (Tolan 3). These children may demonstrate what appear to be poor academic skills, causing them to appear to be less capable (Oettinger 11). Sloppy handwriting can signify that a child's hands cannot keep pace with his quick mind; some are poor spellers because they do not see words as collections of single letters and some may even have trouble with memorization (Tolan 3). Gifted programs allow them to use their skills in ways that are better suited to their learning style. Many parents and educators are intrigued to note that gifted children often function on several different levels of intelligence and development at the same time. It is not unusual to find a six year old that can read at a seventh grade level, but has the comprehension of a fourth grader with the temperament of a three year old. Ben used reading as an advantage to comprehend and learn more, and like Ben, we should use reading as an advantage to getting farther in life. Furthermore, success also lies in the hands of God. For example, "'Thank you God," he prayed. "You gave me a miracle today!" In Ben's moment of struggle, he reached for God's help, and no doubt God created a miracle. Ben life was a hassle, but not only did he have God with him, he had faith that God's plans were for a reason. Likewise, we should reach out to god and in moments of doubt ask him for help. In conclusion, some of the most important ideas for success in life are honesty, books, and God. Although many other ideas may be just as good, the importance of the three had a major impact in Ben's life, and like so, these also had an impact on many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. The Development Of Gifted Education Historical roots School students' involvement in research projects is a new demand of 21st century due to some factors: globalization trend, development of human capital, implementation of the reform on the support and development of schools for gifted students and the poor results of Kazakhstani students in PISA. Since this paper is focused on research projects in the framework of gifted education, it is essential to determine the concepts of "children as researchers" and "gifted education" by answering the question "What" and then, discuss the reasons of "Why". The historical roots of the concept of children as researchers started being popular because of the change of children's status in society ( Hallet and Prout 2003; Alderson and Morrow, 2004). The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989) designated children as social actors in their own rights. Specifically, children should be enlightened and engaged about all solutions that influence their lives (as cited in Kellett, 2005, p.4). According to some scholars (Kirby and Bryson, 2002; Johnson et al., 1998), since that time the growth of children as participants as well as co–researchers is apparently seen. Initially, children were involved in some data collections, thus most of research projects are still being manipulated by adults and children are not considered as potential partners (Kellett, 2005, p.5). Nevertheless, the definition of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Alchemist And Gifted Hands Essay Christopher Orobinsky The quote "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." In my opinion this quote is true because you do need experience to do or know something. Although reading can give you a lot of knowledge it's not enough for you in the real world. To become a doctor you actually need experience but knowledge is just as important. I believe that this quote can be applied to "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" by Ben Carson with Cecil Murphey and "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho, because in these books the author portrays the challenges and hardships the people faced which is their experience and the ... Mindfulness is an important component of Eastern religions but has been used in schools to help students increase their awareness of their focus and anxieties in an attempt to overcome them. In the classroom, the purpose of mindfulness is not an attempt to permanently move mountains, but rather to find a way around the stumbling block in the mental path. Yoga has been shown, throughresearch, to reduce anxiety (Kirkwood, Rampes, Tuffrey, Richardson, & Pilkington, 2005). Yoga is widely practiced by groups of people for various reasons and with ranging levels of devotion. • 41. Argumentative Essay On Gifted Children Arbitrary, too narrow in scope, and biased are just a few of the things that come up when psychologists, teachers and parents discuss how to determine if children are gifted and talented. In the United States, 6 to 10 percent of school age children are labeled "gifted" and are placed into classes that cater to their advanced abilities (National Association of Gifted Children, 2014). School age children, in some states, can be as young as four years old. A lot of the controversy starts right there: how can four year olds be expected to take a challenging IQ assessment and then have their score on that test determine their classroom placement for the next 13 years? Lewis Terman, an American psychologist and professor at Stanford University, was a pioneer in the understanding of gifted children and their place in the American education system. He was majorly influenced by Alfred Binet and eventually revised the Binet–Stanford scale so that it could be used in the United States, where it is now known as the Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scale (Human Intelligence, 2013). A major contribution of his was the definition of what makes a child gifted. According to Terman, an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of at least 130 marks giftedness, he even believed that any child who scored a 132 or higher was a genius (Steinberg, Bornstein, Vandell, & Rook, 2011). To measure intelligence, he expanded on William Sterns' equation stating that IQ is a person's mental age and chronological age ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
