Character Analysis Of Scrooge In A Christmas Carol
Jim Rohn a famous author, motivational speaker once said "Your life does not get better by chance, but by chance." Not once was someone ever
brought up perfect and no not one person changed to die perfect. But you can always change to be a better person and have a good impact on the
people around you. Scrooge who was a character in the play, AChristmas Carol, Scrooge didn't take upon himself to see how himself and others suffer,
and was a grouchey, mean, dark souled man. But as the quote in the beginning the meaning it puts through describes Scrooge, and how he changes to
be the good person it changed to be.
In the beginning of the play, A Christmas Carol, Scrooge was grouchey, mean, dark soaled. For example a direct quote from Scrooge to Fred states
"Bah! Humbug!". Scrooge continues to show this behavior when talking to the Gentleman Visitor he says, "Liberty? No doubt of it? Alright, Alright,
I can read..What do you want?". Scrooge continues to show bad character traits when he says " Be here all earler next morning." This shows me how
Scrooge is dark soled and grouchy as I mentioned. Scrooge tends to show little care factor about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Going through his transformation he is visited by ghosts thought his past. These ghosts helped him change because you can tell he is starting feel
solem when the Ghost of Christmas Past journeys him though his past. On his journey to change for the better the Ghost of Christmas Past takes
him on a journey through his past life. This helps Scrooge transform into a better person because he is witnessing his sister Fan and how much he
loved her and how he wishes he could get her back. That has a huge impact on Scrooge because he begins to realize what he had lost, and begins to
toughen up and let the light shine, and starts being nicer to people as he would have been to his sister, and how he sister would of wanted him to

Examples Of Good And Evil In The Scarlet Letter

Whose the Sinner and Whose the Saint? Why do these characters in the Scarlet Letter have a "good and evil" side to them? This question is what
most readers ask themselves when reading the Scarlet Letter. While I read this book, I felt that you could pick out whom Hawthorne was trying to
depict as sinner and a saint. This book is a perfect example of the argument that people have now a day that everyone has a good and a bad side. All
of these characters have good and evil in them and there perfect examples in this book. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict between
good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Pearl, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This quote talks about how important Pearl is to Hester after her birth. Pearl is kind of the only warmth Hester truly receives until the end of the book.
As I, stated early people were offended that Hester was keeping the identity of the man; she had an affair with more than the sin itself. Pearl is Hester's
one true treasure, hence the name Pearl. "Or some of such half–fledged angel of judgment, – whose mission was to punish the sins of the rising
generation." (Hawthorne 94). This quote is my favorite quote describing anyone character in this whole book. This quote truly makes you feel that
Pearl was there to punish Hester for her sins. Throughout the book, you see Pearl kind of harassing Hester and I believe that this is a perfect quote
to describe those actions. Pearl not knowing who her father was is another reason why she was so scared of Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth
seemed to be the character that was put in the book to not like, but had so many phenominal quotes that state why he is good and evil. Hawthorne
writes, "He bequeathed a very considerable amount of property, both here and in England" (237). This quote shows how much he cared for Pearl.
Even though he knew from the beginning that Pearl was not his, he still treated her as his own child, which was about the only nice characteristic
about him. Why would he do for anyone besides himself? It seemed to me that he was worried about what people would think of

Anselm Kiefer Was A German Artist Who Was Born Directly...
Anselm Kiefer was a German artist who was born directly after World War II. The art that Kiefer created focused on a reconciliation with the shame
and horror surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed to redefine what it meant to be German in a "post–Nazi World (Smith)." The piece I studied is
located at the MoMa in San Francisco and is entitled "Shulamite". "Shulamite" is a historical painting of a Nazi Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it
in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed the architecture of a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for their victims. Kiefer
uses some very interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage, grief, and shame that Germans felt in
response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with the country's dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country
as no longer representative of it's dark past.
The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede towards some flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the
hall resemble a sort of dungeon or a sort of oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades of black, and brown. White paint is used to outline
the crevices and edges of the bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched black. The dimly lit piece seems to be an interior space
solely lit by the series of small flames, and these flames are placed at a

The Girl With Cobwebs Analysis
The past four papers that we, as class, read and discussed have all focused on people with a dark and gloomy past. The story about the girl with a
zipper in her throat conveys a lot of meaning through the figurative language the author included in her writing. A girl with cobwebs in her throat has
a hard time communicating her past and feelings due to the cobwebs blocking sounds from exiting her vocal cords. The conception of having
cobwebs in a person's throat is fictitious, but the author used cobwebs in her writing to symbolize her dark past. The cobwebs in her throat were
unreachable, but the doctor "placed a zipper in her throat" for ease of accessibility to manage them. He gave her control over her problem through an
evaluation session as doctors don't conventionally add zippers to peoples' throats.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cobwebs form in corners that are too far to clean regularly and only get worse over time until you personally clean them. She "cleans" the
cobwebs from her throat by regularly visiting the psychologist's office, but this time, he tells her there is a permanent solution to her problem, he
tells her to find love. I also believe the zipper is a symbol for medicine as the only realistic option that can "clean" stress and sadness due to past
emotional trauma is drugs. Drugs, although they make a person temporarily feel better, only cause worse trauma when the "high" goes down. Most
prescriptions written by psychiatrists are drugs that trigger high levels of endorphin and leave a person with lower levels of endorphin then before
after the "high" is down, and this causes the girl to seek love as a permanent solution. The girl's past is dark and shadowy because her problems often
prevent her from living her life. If her problems didn't affect her daily activities, she would never seek out help from a

The Dark Night Of The Soul And Heath Ledger
Various individuals seek answers through literate arts. While books can't always give us answers about how to live our lives or how society works, we
can still learn a lot. The truth of the matter is that nobody can determine your future, but yourself. The literate arts can teach individuals different skills
or knowledge about society, but what you retain from the books will drastically affect your point of view and actions. Through Millers essay, "The
Dark Night of the Soul" and Heath Ledger, well known for his role as the joker in the movie, Dark knight, is a good representation of how the literate
arts can be perceived in many different ways. Literate arts can open your mind to many different thoughts, but the way you interpret them ... Show more

He couldn't separate his work and home life. His message to the viewers is that being a supervillain is bad, while he does it himself. This led him to
overdosing on drugs and later on killing himself through his disruptive behavior. How are the literate arts positive? The literate arts are our source to
gaining different information on society. Through many scenarios in life, we learn different things about ourselves. Heath's death was all his fault and
not the literate arts because the joker was living within him. The joker was born in Heath, when his parents split, and the movie allowed him to express
all his emotions though the psychopathic joker.
In Millers essay, he provides a scenario where one's past experience could have impacted one's life. For example, in the Liar's Club, Mary Karr tries
to make sense of her family's past. Her curiosity drove her to find more information about her family and with that she found that her father
participated in the war. "She discovered that he was wounded twice, one time stuck with a bayonet through his forearm, leaving a scar" (454).
Without knowing her father's past, Mary would have never known the experiences her father went through. This led to her father, Pete to be more
violent towards his family, which led to a "...memoir allows one to plunge into the darkness of the past" (451). Pete had a very tough childhood that
allowed him to keep secrets

idea as well. The protagonist Mari also realizes her self–value through helping Dongli. Dongli's appreciation further gives her confidence and promotes
her courage to reinvolve into society with a mature self. All the three steps for the successful pursuit of identity rely not on the passive environment but
on the active interaction between the self and the others. Abe and Murakami strengthen this point through irony. In The Woman in the

This is the other part of the story, the one no one asks about or knows about. It's the part of the story my parents never wanted to hear about. The

How by Abraham Sutzkever Essay
How by Abraham Sutzkever
When Abraham Sutzkever wrote "How?" in February 1943, he was only seven months from his own freedom, yet the ghetto itself was still one year
and five months from emancipation. Yet his portrayal of "the day of Liberation" appears very similar to a day in the Nazi ghettos, where time is
extended through pain, devastation, and fear. The only difference felt is the frustration of their memories and their powerlessness to proceed past the
hatred and pain that were connected to the deaths of thousands, both literally and figuratively. These dark memories are not forgotten by time, and his
imagined survival of the Jews appears bleak and tedious; the pain and gloom of their experiences overshadowing their ... Show more content on

Because these dead are congealed into a bottomless pit within one's dark scream from their past, then they too, are dead. Since the murdered from
their past are now a part of the living, loss of identity and despair stay embedded in their memories for life. For those who lived through the ghettos
and camps, reaching Sutzkever's imagined liberation, were faced with "jammed locks," blocking them from their once normal lives. Behind locked
door lies their true selves, or individuality, which was locked by the repression and dehumanization of their culture. Once free, the memories time
won't forget continue to block the entrance. "And your memory will be like/ An old buried city. / Your eternal gaze will crawl/ Like a mole, like a
mole." These lines reflects a darkness that never allows the hidden memories to escape. A buried city is full, intact but stagnant and unmoved with no
where to go. By comparing one's memory to this, Sutzkever is making a powerful statement regarding the ramifications of the Holocaust's terror. Since
the memories are buried, they can hardly be removed, causing one to eternally acknowledge them. This acknowledgement crawls slowly like the dark
mole due to the severity and depth of the Nazi's immorality; the clichГ© "time flies when you're having fun" works both ways. Consequently, "buried"
and "mole" both reflect the theme of being hidden, either in one's memory, or from the regularity of life after the Holocaust. Through

Theme Of Light In A Streetcar Named Desire
Light vs dark is a recurring theme in the play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. This play circles around the main character Blanche
and how she is trying to start a new life leaving her past sins behind her. Slowly her past starts to catch up with her and eventually she has a downfall in
mental health and is sent away. Throughout this play there are many instances where thelight and the absence of light affects the character Blanche. She
finds comfort in the darkness and it greatly influences her connection with reality, the relationship she has with Mitch, and her slow mental decline.
The motif light vs dark is prominent because it affects relationships in the story greatly, most noticeably Blanches relationships. When Blanche... Show

In the beginning of the play she is nonchalant about covering up light because she feels more put together. She tells Mitch to put a "little colored
paper lantern... over the lightbulb" because she "can't stand a naked lightbulb" (Williams 60). This shows that she still cares about not being seen in
the light but not as much as later in the play. In scene 5 she refers to the lantern covering the light but she says "soft people have got to... put a paper
lantern over the light... you've got to be soft and attractive. And I––I'm fading now," she's rambling about how she is not how she was in her youth
(Williams 92). She's stating that she needs that covering of the light to be the new , more pure and innocent, person she is trying to be. Soon this
darkness that she finds comfort in turns into "shadows of grotesque and menacing form," (Williams 159) haunting her thoughts as she is slowly grown
more insane from her past catching up to her. The darkness, which was once her safety net, has turned into her nightmare. Light vs dark accentuates
every aspect of Blanche's life and, in turn, affects the people around her. The straining of Blanche's relationship with Mitch, her crumbling mental state,
and her detachment from reality are all seen through the motif light vs dark. Without this recurring image there would be no lies and destruction of
characters. The downfall of this character is brought by her use of darkness

The Community In The Giver
Is the community of the giver a dystopia, or a utopia? In the far future a "perfect" community exists in the middle of nowhere where the people have
no memory of the past and no one sees color.A dystopia is a dark, dysfunctional place, while a utopia is a perfect place, which one should we use to

from death, they kill anyone who wishes to leave and the residents have no memories of the past.
One dark, hidden secret of the community is that they have not been able to erase death, they simply hide it behind a new name, called "release".

Humanity is Destined to be Maple
I.Introduction
A.First paragraph of introduction
1."Young Goodman Brown" is a dark romantic short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne originally published in 1835.
2.Set in 17th century New England, Hawthorne utilizes this short story to convey his distaste for the Salem Witch Trials and his great–grandfather,
John Hathorne's participation as a judge. In addition, he demonstrates the Puritan idea that all humans are in a state of corruption until you have
experienced a conversion, only sanctioned by God to become part of "the elite".
3.It begins in Salem, Massachusetts when young Goodman Brown leaves his wife, Faith, for an errand in the forest. It is later revealed that this
errand is an attempt to seek a conversion in the forest with the Devil. While on the journey, he learns some disturbing things about his ancestors that
they too have walked the same walk in the forest with the Devil and not only his ancestors but people of authority and people in the town. Realizing
that Faith and himself are the only two not yet initiated, he looks to heaven and the hell he was in vanishes, leaving him back in the forest not
knowing whether it was a dream or reality. He returns to Salem the next day with a belief that his Christian village and all of humanity is perverted
and so he died a bitter and distrustful man with no hope.

The Beating Heart Of The Seven Gables
The Beating Heart of The House of the Seven Gables Nathaniel Hawthorne extensively weaves symbolism into the pages of The House of the Seven
Gables to bring the house and the items within it to life. The use of gothic elements within the house directly reflects upon the decaying of the
Pyncheon family. Their once lively home stands as a constant reminder of the family's legacy. The Pyncheon mansion strongly represents the decaying
of the Pyncheon family over time. In the early 1800's, when the house was first built, the Pyncheons were a thriving, wealthy, and influential family.
However, as time goes on, the house starts to become an eerie residence in the same way the Pyncheon's glory fades. The author describes the darkness

young and rosy, and cannot help letting a smile break out whether or no. He always liked bright faces! And mine is old now, the tears are hardly dry
on it" (page 70). In the yard outside the house stands an overgrown elm tree symbolizing the growth of the darkness in the Pyncheon family. The great
tree blocks the sun from shining into the home. Hawthorne symbolizes this as the burden and secrets that cast a dark shadow over the family. When the
tree first sprouts upon the lawn and grows, beauty radiates from it in the same way the Pyncheons first radiate their glory. Inside the house remains the
memory of Alice Pyncheon found within her coffin–like harpsichord. The harpsichord plays beautiful melodies that still echo through the house. They
serve as a constant reminder of Alice's spirit. However, the instrument representing a coffin reminds those who wonder about Alice 's legacy of her
tragic ending. By using a coffin–like harpsichord, Hawthorne employs a dual symbol to an item. Much like how the house causes unease to those who
dare glance in its direction, the painting of Colonel Pyncheon lets off the same threatening vibe. The glare the old Pyncheon holds in the portrait keeps
people who observe the artwork from attempting to remove it from the wall. Hawthorne writes, "there

Light And Dark In The Great Gatsby
"I don't tell the truth, I tell what ought to be truth. And if that is sinful, then let me be damned for it!" (Williams 145). The common theme of light and
dark is used by American authors to help reveal truth. Characters hiding from the truth also hide from the light. These characters' hide because they are
scared of revealing the truth to others and to themselves. When Blanche describes her view on the truth, she doesn't know that she almost predicts the
tragic end to her life, which can be blamed on her lies. Hiding from the light illustrates instability and an apprehensive life. In an attempt to appear a
certain way, characters create these lies about their past. Their lies eventually become the most important thing in their lives, and leads to their demise.

The lies characters create are often to cover up a past they are not proud of. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche is a mysterious who has a strong
distaste for being in direct light. She relies on the dark to hide her insincerity. When she first arrives at her sister's home, she describes how she "can't
stand a naked light bulb, any more than I can a rude remark or a vulgar action" (Williams 60). This strong disfavor towards light reveals Blanche's lies
throughout the novel. Blanche's main lie is her age. She hides from the light to make her appear younger. Blanche also hides from her desolate past.
Blanche married young and shortly after, the young man "stuck [a] revolver into his mouth, and fired" (115). Blaming the suicide on herself, Blanche
tries to hide from the past away from the starkness of light that would reveal everything. In The Great Gatsby, characters also use the dark to hide
from realities in their life. Gatsby's goals in life are represented by a green light on the end of the dock. This light overshadows Gatsby, leaving him in
the dark. Although this light is something he always reaches

Warner Bros. has chosen to present these stories in much dark way than has ever been done before. This strategy proved to be extremely successful

Lauren Banowsky The Hold Dance Analysis
In "the hold" by Lauren Banowsky, a contemporary dance incorporated with ballet techniques is performed in a dark and spacious stage. The dance
demonstrates the constant hold from one living its life to the fullest potential due to dragging the past, with the urge to obtain freedom or a sense of
relief. The choreography being displayed by two female dancers consisted of a negative, intense energy, constant moving towards the ground, and a
dragging type of movement due to the stretchy dress. Most of the dance moves are considered characteristics of modern dance due to the movements
towards the ground and dancing barefooted. Doris Humphrey's technique of "fall and recovery" is a perfect example to the coming of the ground

There was a repetition of the lyric, "I been caught in fire" which is meaningful to the dance because the word fire in this dance can mean death, hell, or
sadness. Based on the choreography and costumes the lyrics helped understood the story line for the dance. The style of music chosen complimented
the choreographic intent of a melancholy type of movement upon the performance. The music affected the dynamics of the dancer's movements
because it allowed a more realistic connection within the dancer. The music choice benefited the dance because the mini pauses throughout the song
allowed the dancer to structure the performance in a more impacting way. The music style can be related to the Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey
style of music for dancing due to the pace of the music and the type of movements. In addition, the music would have been more touching if it was sang
by a female rather than a male to have more association with the female dancers feelings. The music is a key element throughout the performance
because it allowed the dancers to dance to the rhythm of the melody and perform with confidence because of the guidance from the music. Given these
points, the rhythm, melody, and pauses the music brought to the performance was prosperous for the choreographer, which brought a gloomy mood to
the audience with a unique type of music and

German History Essay
Most would agree that it is valuable to acknowledge history, whether it be through documentation, education, or architectural preservation. However,
history can be complex and ugly, stained by war, genocide, and destruction. Therein lies a philosophical controversy: should these historical "stains" be
acknowledged or buried? What role do these ugly histories have in the development of a society? Within the last century, no nation has been forced to
confront these questions on the same scale that Germany has (Levinger 118). With a twentieth–century history marked by hatred and the abuse of
power, National Socialism and Soviet communism, Germany's dark history lies only decades in the past. For this reason, these histories remain freshly

In essence, historic preservation roots collective memory in a physical, tangible space. To many scholars, memory in this context is not simply
information that is recalled and retold (qtd. in Till 11). Instead, it is the act of continuously finding and contextualizing history by means of physical
space. Preservation of historical architecture is therefore unique, as it juxtaposes this history and memory with the surrounding modern world. This
highlights the importance of preserving history through architecture, rather than museums, textbooks, and archives alone. By preserving the physical
remnants of a city's dark history, residents and passersby are forced to confront this history nondeliberately. Moreover, according to Rudy J. Koshar, a
preserved site must maintain some present value or purpose. This is particularly relevant when considering the preservation of buildings or sites which
represent a history that is controversial or shameful, as it is important to balance the shame evoked by this space with the benefits of its preservation.
The task of historic preservation is especially challenging in nations such as Germany which have pasts that many are reluctant to remember. Germany
is a particularly interesting case, as it is now recognized as one of the most progressive, economically powerful, and politically liberal countries in the
world. Yet, no comparably modern country is

What Does The Light Symbolize In The Black Cat
Authors who write literature often put their feelings into their work which can cause us to connect with how the authors feel sometimes. Authors as
well have some sort of past so that often without thinking write something that can be a symbolize something from their past, so if they had a bad past
then their literature may be tragic or gothic. For example The Black Cat written by Edgar Allan Poe uses a light and dark theme which can go along
with the gothic theme. Light and Dark symbolize how dark Poe's childhood was since he writes about death, murder, and other gory storylines. Poe
uses light and dark to show the different aspects of the narrators and how guilt can consume a person. One example of the thesis is the black cat who
was in the wall with the corpse the whole time. The quote for this found on page eight goes like this "I had walled the monster up within the wall" so

Technology And The Dark Web
As technology has propelled forward in our exploration of knowledge relating to computers and their science it is understandable that there are still
areas of this field which may yet remain unexplored. One particular field being the Dark Web, which has been defined as an area of the deep web
which has, "been intentionally hidden and is therefore inaccessible through standard [web] browsers." (Brightplanet.) Although this web has evolved
over the course of many years, possibly dating back to the 1990s and the development of onion routing, it has advanced itself into an industry which
no one could have ever predicted. Further as well delve deeper into this developmental occurrence known as the Dark Web, I feel that we must ask
ourselves how this has evolved into what we know it as today and whether or not it represents our future or past in dealing with the internet activities.
As with many events and activities being related to the creation of technology, a few different aspects of it can be tied back to the government. In this
case, the Dark Web may be directly related to the, "creation of 'Onion Routing' by the United States Naval Research Laboratory, which was the first

Analysis Of The Writings Of Washington Irving, Nathaniel...
Review of writings of Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.
By Mantegbosh Letyibelu
Irving, Poe, and Hawthorne were arguably some of the most popular writers of the 19th century (Dincer 223; Lauter 2505). All three of them are
known for their short essays and their advocacy to make writing a full–fledged and legitimate profession. Their writings show that they were hugely
influenced by the Romantic Movement (romanticism); 'a movement in art, literature, music, philosophy, politics and culture towards focusing on the
individual, the subjective, and the spontaneous' (Dincer 218). Romanticist writing "encouraged contemplation and self–awareness, direct contact with
nature, and a focus on and an exploration of inner feelings" (Dincer 223). Yet, they had distinct writing style, focus, and theme. While Irving was
more of a light romantic writer, a writing style characterized by optimism, Poe and Hawthorne are widely considered dark romantic Authors whose

on satire and humor, Poe & Hawthorne's writing was more about evil, crime, sin, and mystery. Moreover, Irving seem to be nostalgic aristocrat with
huge 'interest in the landscape, folklore, and the past' (2506), whereas Poe and Hawthorne had a contrary view of the past (Liptak).

Dark Matter And Dark Energy
Dark matter and dark energy are some of the most mysterious forces in our universe. They encompass around 95 percent of our universe, however, the
human race is blinds to the truth of their existence. What we truly know about the mystery that is a majority of our universe is near insignificant
compared to the possibilities that exist. We know that they exist and that they do something. Their discovery wasn't even a sign of humanities dawning
intellect, it was a mere accident.
The scientific community had no inkling that the universe was made up of more than what we can see until the 1930's. A Swiss astronomer–Fritz
Zwicky–was measuring the speed of the orbits of galaxies in the Coma Cluster (Ferris). His calculations indicated that the ... Show more content on

As the search for the true identity of dark matter goes nowhere, scientists call the dark matter WIMPs–weakly interacting massive particles (Ferris). The
scientist don't know exactly what they are looking for, so they named it after one of the confounding properties possessed by this hidden substance.
Scientists have a slightly greater idea of the properties of dark matter than they do its identity. The name WIMPS–weakly interacting particles–comes
from then fact that dark matter barely interacts with "normal" matter or itself (Ferris). Evidence of this is found in the Bullet cluster, where two
clusters are colliding (Ferris). Astronomers found clumps of has gas at the center–ascribed to the collision of normal matter (Ferris). However, they also
found a large concentration of mass for each cluster far from the center of the collision (Ferris). They believe that the more massive parts of the
clusters that are made up of dark matter are continuing on (Ferris). The dark matter is seemingly unaffected by the massive collision of multiple
galaxies, indicating that it is neither pulled along by the normal matter surrounding it nor attracted to its dark counterpart. Other investigations indicate
that the formation of galaxies is due to the gravity of dark matter pulling materials together early in the formation of the universe (Ferris). If this is
true, than the presence of dark matter is responsible for every cohesive body of mass in the universe. Our lives

Why Do We Lose Creativity In Latin America?
As children grow up they lose creativity as they become more immersed in the real world. Just as children growing up mourn losing creativity, Latin
American people mourn losing happiness in their country. Many nations in Latin America were controlled by totalitarian governments, by subjecting
citizens to the loss of their basic human rights. The loss of their former, culture and lifestyle gave rise to social realism in literature, by Latin American
writers. Social realism was described through dark tones, atmosphere and allegories to help readers understand the devastation authors felt during this
horrific time in their country.
Authors used dark tones to evoke sympathy from readers for their situations using hauntingly dark statements. Clarice Lispector uses atmosphere and

Jorge Borges used a dark tone to explain the state of Argentina through his poem, "In Praise of Darkness." "This growing dark is slow and brings no
pain; it flows along an easy slope and is a kin to eternity" (Borges 340). The situation of Argentina is a growing poison and will always keep flowing,
to the extent of no end in sight to the peoples' misery. Octavio Paz also used dramatic language to help readers understand Mexico's situation, "I walk
in blackness and I stumble and fall and rise and I walk blind, my feet stepping on silent stories and dry leaves" (342). His imagery shows how the
despotic government in Mexico is surrounded in darkness and for freedom loving people like him, life under such a regime keeps him down,

James Baldwin 's Sonny 's Blues
James Baldwin brings you on an emotional ride through Harlem in the 1950's with his short story, "Sonny's Blues." From the beginning, we are in
media res when the unnamed narrator is informed of bad news concerning his younger, troubled brother, Sonny. Throughout the story we witness the
ocean of emotions between these two brothers battling hardships from their past, through flashbacks, and present time. The setting plays an important
role in "Sonny's Blues" to an extent where it is practically a character in the story. The city of Harlem is a reminder of their troubles and the suffering
it ignites is exactly what Sonny tries to run away from when he turns to drugs and jazz music. Through the setting of "Sonny's Blues," and the example
of the relationship between the narrator and his younger brother, Sonny, James Baldwin presents how a dark past full of suffering can influence present
lives and relationships.
The sequence of events is not in chronological order since the narrator goes from present, to past, and back to present in order to illustrate the
suffering experienced by both brothers and to emphasize the impact the past has on the present. During present time, Sonny is sentenced to prison for
heroine abuse. The narrator and Sonny are not close at this time because he doesn't try to understand Sonny until his little girl dies and he has some of
his own suffering to deal with. "I was sitting in the living room in the dark, by myself, and I suddenly thought of Sonny. My

The Use Of Light In White Mirror
Light is often used in films and television to show underlying thematic tensions in the narrative. In the episode "White Mirror" from the Netflix series
Black Mirror, the juxtaposition between light and dark is used to show how Joe is struggling to accept the truth that he killed two people. In the first
scene and in the confession scene light from the outside world represents truth, the darkness of the cabin represents avoidance of the truth, and the shift
between light to dark shows Joe's transformation from avoidance to acceptance of his past.
Light is often associated with many ideas, so when the white light of the windows shine into the cabin, it is necessary to consider the association light
has within this narrative. The light in this

The Theme Of Balance In Ursula Leguin's A Wizard Of Earthsea
The balance of light and dark has been off–kilter forever and the balance has never been obtained! In the fantasy novel A Wizard of Earthsea by
Ursula LeGuin, the battle of light and dark has subsided, balance has been restored, and shows the journey of discovering one's identity. At the end
of the novel, when the shadow and Ged conjoin it can be seen as the realization of one's identity, as well the discovering of balance. LeGuin uses
symbols in the novel to convey what is happening on a deeper level. At the beginning of the end, the sea turned into sand as Ged approached his
shadow, which can be seen as a balance, when two opposites, such as sea and sand, become one. It shows when two opposites find a middle point and
are at peace as opposed to constantly battering against one another. This instance can also be seen... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Light and dark have been unbalanced, waging on since the beginning of time, until they find a balance where each has met its match. When Ged,
with his flaming white staff merges with the pitch black shadow, and emerging as one may be seen as if they have made peace at a set point and
created equilibrium, as previously discussed by Yarrow and Ged. When this occurs, Ged finally becomes a whole self by recognizing who he is,
and his balance of positive and negative decisions .Also, in the interaction between Ged and the shadow on the "yin and yang" island, Ged spoke
his own name and embraced the shadow. Ying and Yang are seen as a "duality forming a whole" so when Ged and the shadow unite, it can
symbolize discovering his whole identity. Since often times darkness represents evil, it can be seen as when Ged embraced the shadow, he is
accepting his past decisions and dark side that can overcome him at any time. It is a part of growing up and finding who you really are, to realize
your past faults, and accept what you did and move

The Black Walnut Tree By Mary Oliver
The Past is Rooted
Change is inevitable; as the years go on, everything is always either improving or weakening, but still changing. Nothing can prevent change, but there
are still those who ignore it and refuse it. Individuals refused to accept their past because they do not want to change, they want to focus on the present.
In Mary Oliver's free verse poem, The Black Walnut Tree, the daughter discusses the argument with her mother regarding the selling of their Black
Walnut Tree, commenting on it's personal history with her ancestors. In the poem, Oliver contrasts the daughter's disagreeing perception of the
mother's consumeristic urges to sell their tree with her need to preserve it and its memories through the use of dark, gloomy word choice and varying
concepts of time, illustrating the everlasting effect and importance of one's past and ancestry on the present. The shift from a literal to figurative tone
contrasts the mother's views with those of the daughter's, commenting on the difficulty of preserving history. Oliver introduces the mother and
daughters argument in the introduction, "My mother and I debate:," including a semicolon at the end of the first stanza. The semicolon is used as a
layout for the rest of the poem, to show the words following are in fact the debate between the speaker, the daughter, and her mother. The point of view
in the daughter shifts the argument in favor of the daughter, who has yet to deal with the issues of money. She regards her

Within his literature, he develops the thought of regret through displaying his memories of the past. Octavio Paz tries to remember his past life in
his poem, "Poet's Epitaph." "And to remember his lying life of truths."(Paz 342) Through the use of the word "lying", we are shown that he has
lived a regretful life where he had to lie. Another way the author displays his regret in life, is through the waste of his time. In his poem, "Small
Variation," he speaks about how time is passing by him and he is not doing anything. "A sound of sand sifting away"(Paz 343). This quote
describes the sounds of an hourglass, and the author is simply letting time pass by. The author also develops the idea of regret through the thought
of the future. In his poem, "The Street," the street is represented as his life and he is walking towards his future blindly. "I walk blind"(Paz 342).
Octavio Paz uses the word blind to express how he is going towards the future. He regrets how he is going towards the future without a path to
follow. These regrets created in one's life are often not resolved and they bring these regrets to the grave. The idea of death is another dark aspect

American History : The Dark Past
American History: The Dark Past
Unique characters, stimulating story plot and surprising endings are some reasons people in literature believe the two novels To Kill a Mockingbird
by Harper Lee and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck have maintained their long standing positions in American literature. Readers and critics alike
spend much time searching for what distinguishes these novels from others. As plain and old these books may seem, their messages are not. To some,
the messages of these novels are about the inspiring, exhilarating, and uplifting history of this country. But in this case, it is the polar opposite.
Throughout these novels, racism, sexism, and many other themes are exhibited as the norm for the characters. Readers often forget that these dark
aspects of the past are a part of America's history. Spanning from the start of early civilization, humans have made many mistakes and to stop this
vicious cycle, they have to learn from the past by keeping classics like these part of school curriculums.
After the required novels in their English classes, students unanimously agree that classics are overrated and outdated. They claim that the themes
exhibited throughout the book create a monotonous tone and plot. However, these are what gives the novels their energy and unique depth. In both Of
Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme of racism is focused on. Racism is a controversial issue for all skin colors and is still prominent
in the 21st century.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Essay
Humans in today's society are very interested in the supernatural. The supernatural can consist of ghosts, vampires, and even the devil. No one
really knows if these supernatural things are real, but by reading Edgar Allan Poe's work, he might just convince you to believe in them. To be
specific, in "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Poe many people debate about the presence of supernatural beings. There are five sides to this
debate, natural causes, the house and family have a bond, the house is haunted, the Usher family are vampires, and a chance that there is a
physiological reason for all of the happenings in the Usher house. The Usher family are vampires because Madeline is eating normal food and not
gaining any weight, the family is ancient, all of the rooms in the Usher house are dark and have no light, the house looks old and haunted, and

she has not fed on any humans in the past. By not eating what she needs to survive, which is blood she is becoming very ill and is slowly dying.
The Usher family, in the book is mentioned to be ancient "that his very ancient family had been noted" (Poe 22). Ancient means belonging to a very

Themes Of Dark Romanticism
Many people think the natural world is a dark place. What makes human beings think this? Is it that they were brought up as a child to think this way,
or was it that as they got old they thought their lives had become worthless, therefore, they continued to not care? Similar themes are shown in the
writings of Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, andNathaniel Hawthorne in their individual works "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Devil and Tom
Walker," and "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment." Unlike the Transcendentalists who saw the purity of an individual, Dark Romantics saw people as
unrighteous and damnable and their writings reflect that people suffer, they see nature as something mysterious, and people have guilt from sinning. In
Dark Romantic literary works the characters are often suffering. For instance, in "The Pit and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, in "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he explains how the characters each have something they want to change in
their lives because they feel guilty. Widow Wycherly at one time was a woman who was loved in the town, but then people learned more about her
past. She lost her reputation and has guilt for it: "As for the Widow Wycherly, tradition tells us that she was once a great beauty. But shocking stories
about her past had led the people of the town to reject her. So, she lived very much alone." (Hawthorne 252). Similarly, the characters, who wanted to
be young again, drank the youth water. As they are guilty for their past mistakes, and they look miserable, "They seemed as though they had never
known youth or pleasure. They looked like they had always been the weak, unhappy creatures who were bent over the doctor's table" (Hawthorne 254).
Overall, the characters of the story wish they were young again, so they can change the sins they did when they were younger, and this demonstrates
that Hawthorne focuses on his characters' sins and

Character Analysis Of Scrooge In A Christmas Carol

  • 1. Character Analysis Of Scrooge In A Christmas Carol Jim Rohn a famous author, motivational speaker once said "Your life does not get better by chance, but by chance." Not once was someone ever brought up perfect and no not one person changed to die perfect. But you can always change to be a better person and have a good impact on the people around you. Scrooge who was a character in the play, AChristmas Carol, Scrooge didn't take upon himself to see how himself and others suffer, and was a grouchey, mean, dark souled man. But as the quote in the beginning the meaning it puts through describes Scrooge, and how he changes to be the good person it changed to be. In the beginning of the play, A Christmas Carol, Scrooge was grouchey, mean, dark soaled. For example a direct quote from Scrooge to Fred states "Bah! Humbug!". Scrooge continues to show this behavior when talking to the Gentleman Visitor he says, "Liberty? No doubt of it? Alright, Alright, I can read..What do you want?". Scrooge continues to show bad character traits when he says " Be here all earler next morning." This shows me how Scrooge is dark soled and grouchy as I mentioned. Scrooge tends to show little care factor about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Going through his transformation he is visited by ghosts thought his past. These ghosts helped him change because you can tell he is starting feel solem when the Ghost of Christmas Past journeys him though his past. On his journey to change for the better the Ghost of Christmas Past takes him on a journey through his past life. This helps Scrooge transform into a better person because he is witnessing his sister Fan and how much he loved her and how he wishes he could get her back. That has a huge impact on Scrooge because he begins to realize what he had lost, and begins to toughen up and let the light shine, and starts being nicer to people as he would have been to his sister, and how he sister would of wanted him to ... • 2. Examples Of Good And Evil In The Scarlet Letter Casey Stickland SLEssay English 11 Period 2 16 November 2017 Whose the Sinner and Whose the Saint? Why do these characters in the Scarlet Letter have a "good and evil" side to them? This question is what most readers ask themselves when reading the Scarlet Letter. While I read this book, I felt that you could pick out whom Hawthorne was trying to depict as sinner and a saint. This book is a perfect example of the argument that people have now a day that everyone has a good and a bad side. All of these characters have good and evil in them and there perfect examples in this book. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict between good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Pearl, and ... Pearl is Hester's one true treasure, hence the name Pearl. "Or some of such half–fledged angel of judgment, – whose mission was to punish the sins of the rising generation." (Hawthorne 94). This quote is my favorite quote describing anyone character in this whole book. This quote truly makes you feel that Pearl was there to punish Hester for her sins. Throughout the book, you see Pearl kind of harassing Hester and I believe that this is a perfect quote to describe those actions. Pearl not knowing who her father was is another reason why she was so scared of Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth seemed to be the character that was put in the book to not like, but had so many phenominal quotes that state why he is good and evil. Hawthorne writes, "He bequeathed a very considerable amount of property, both here and in England" (237). This quote shows how much he cared for Pearl. Even though he knew from the beginning that Pearl was not his, he still treated her as his own child, which was about the only nice characteristic about him. Why would he do for anyone besides himself? It seemed to me that he was worried about what people would think of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Anselm Kiefer Was A German Artist Who Was Born Directly... Anselm Kiefer was a German artist who was born directly after World War II. The art that Kiefer created focused on a reconciliation with the shame and horror surrounding the holocaust, aimed aimed to redefine what it meant to be German in a "post–Nazi World (Smith)." The piece I studied is located at the MoMa in San Francisco and is entitled "Shulamite". "Shulamite" is a historical painting of a Nazi Memorial Site, which Kiefer created it in 1983. In this painting, Kiefer transformed the architecture of a site which was meant to honor Nazi heroes into a memorial for their victims. Kiefer uses some very interesting aesthetic techniques to reflect the intense emotions of that time and to reflect the rage, grief, and shame that Germans felt in response to the Holocaust. His intention was to reconcile with the country's dark past through memorializing the persecuted while painting the country as no longer representative of it's dark past. The piece displays a cavernous interior with a series of dark arches that recede towards some flickering flames. These huge bricks and arches make the hall resemble a sort of dungeon or a sort of oven. The palette he used is limited to solely to shades of black, and brown. White paint is used to outline the crevices and edges of the bricks. The windows are dark black, and the ceiling is pitched black. The dimly lit piece seems to be an interior space solely lit by the series of small flames, and these flames are placed at a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Girl With Cobwebs Analysis The past four papers that we, as class, read and discussed have all focused on people with a dark and gloomy past. The story about the girl with a zipper in her throat conveys a lot of meaning through the figurative language the author included in her writing. A girl with cobwebs in her throat has a hard time communicating her past and feelings due to the cobwebs blocking sounds from exiting her vocal cords. The conception of having cobwebs in a person's throat is fictitious, but the author used cobwebs in her writing to symbolize her dark past. The cobwebs in her throat were unreachable, but the doctor "placed a zipper in her throat" for ease of accessibility to manage them. He gave her control over her problem through an evaluation session as doctors don't conventionally add zippers to peoples' throats.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cobwebs form in corners that are too far to clean regularly and only get worse over time until you personally clean them. She "cleans" the cobwebs from her throat by regularly visiting the psychologist's office, but this time, he tells her there is a permanent solution to her problem, he tells her to find love. I also believe the zipper is a symbol for medicine as the only realistic option that can "clean" stress and sadness due to past emotional trauma is drugs. Drugs, although they make a person temporarily feel better, only cause worse trauma when the "high" goes down. Most prescriptions written by psychiatrists are drugs that trigger high levels of endorphin and leave a person with lower levels of endorphin then before after the "high" is down, and this causes the girl to seek love as a permanent solution. The girl's past is dark and shadowy because her problems often prevent her from living her life. If her problems didn't affect her daily activities, she would never seek out help from a ... • 5. The Dark Night Of The Soul And Heath Ledger Various individuals seek answers through literate arts. While books can't always give us answers about how to live our lives or how society works, we can still learn a lot. The truth of the matter is that nobody can determine your future, but yourself. The literate arts can teach individuals different skills or knowledge about society, but what you retain from the books will drastically affect your point of view and actions. Through Millers essay, "The Dark Night of the Soul" and Heath Ledger, well known for his role as the joker in the movie, Dark knight, is a good representation of how the literate arts can be perceived in many different ways. Literate arts can open your mind to many different thoughts, but the way you interpret them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He couldn't separate his work and home life. His message to the viewers is that being a supervillain is bad, while he does it himself. This led him to overdosing on drugs and later on killing himself through his disruptive behavior. How are the literate arts positive? The literate arts are our source to gaining different information on society. Through many scenarios in life, we learn different things about ourselves. Heath's death was all his fault and not the literate arts because the joker was living within him. The joker was born in Heath, when his parents split, and the movie allowed him to express all his emotions though the psychopathic joker. In Millers essay, he provides a scenario where one's past experience could have impacted one's life. For example, in the Liar's Club, Mary Karr tries to make sense of her family's past. Her curiosity drove her to find more information about her family and with that she found that her father participated in the war. "She discovered that he was wounded twice, one time stuck with a bayonet through his forearm, leaving a scar" (454). Without knowing her father's past, Mary would have never known the experiences her father went through. This led to her father, Pete to be more violent towards his family, which led to a "...memoir allows one to plunge into the darkness of the past" (451). Pete had a very tough childhood that allowed him to keep secrets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Woman In The Dunes By Murakami as ever had not changed, but he felt quite as if he had climbed to the top of a high tower... He was still in the hole, but it seemed as if he were already outside." Although the idea of self–value is more central and directly implied in The Woman in the Dunes, Murakami's After Dark investigates this idea as well. The protagonist Mari also realizes her self–value through helping Dongli. Dongli's appreciation further gives her confidence and promotes her courage to reinvolve into society with a mature self. All the three steps for the successful pursuit of identity rely not on the passive environment but on the active interaction between the self and the others. Abe and Murakami strengthen this point through irony. In The Woman in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Jennifer’s Dark Past This is the other part of the story, the one no one asks about or knows about. It's the part of the story my parents never wanted to hear about. The part of the story that turned me into what I became. I was one of those girls who developed at a faster rate than the others. By the time I was a freshman my bra size was a 36C. As I stepped through the doors of school that year, I noticed the stares I got from all the guys. Warnings my mother had told me rang in my ears, "all the want is one thing." "Don't let them lure you in it's a trap don't listen to there phony pick up lines." That was when my problems started; boys were always asking me out. That's when everything got worse, my father sent me away to college, and I knew they were glad that I was gone. I stopped going to school and moved in with a guy named Royce. He was a drug dealer and he kept me in good supply. My life meant nothing to me anymore I was a void. I needed a way to get money so I turned to prostitution, but nobody wanted a messed up ugly girl like me. I was skin and bones and I could see it I just didn't have the strength to stop myself. Life was bad and if I wanted any help I had only one choice my parents. Going to them was a thing I was not proud of. When I showed up at their door step I could tell they were dumbfounded. I could imagine what was going through their minds when they first saw me. "Who is this?" "This cant be our daughter." I swallowed my pride and asked for their help. • 8. How by Abraham Sutzkever Essay How by Abraham Sutzkever When Abraham Sutzkever wrote "How?" in February 1943, he was only seven months from his own freedom, yet the ghetto itself was still one year and five months from emancipation. Yet his portrayal of "the day of Liberation" appears very similar to a day in the Nazi ghettos, where time is extended through pain, devastation, and fear. The only difference felt is the frustration of their memories and their powerlessness to proceed past the hatred and pain that were connected to the deaths of thousands, both literally and figuratively. These dark memories are not forgotten by time, and his imagined survival of the Jews appears bleak and tedious; the pain and gloom of their experiences overshadowing their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because these dead are congealed into a bottomless pit within one's dark scream from their past, then they too, are dead. Since the murdered from their past are now a part of the living, loss of identity and despair stay embedded in their memories for life. For those who lived through the ghettos and camps, reaching Sutzkever's imagined liberation, were faced with "jammed locks," blocking them from their once normal lives. Behind locked door lies their true selves, or individuality, which was locked by the repression and dehumanization of their culture. Once free, the memories time won't forget continue to block the entrance. "And your memory will be like/ An old buried city. / Your eternal gaze will crawl/ Like a mole, like a mole." These lines reflects a darkness that never allows the hidden memories to escape. A buried city is full, intact but stagnant and unmoved with no where to go. By comparing one's memory to this, Sutzkever is making a powerful statement regarding the ramifications of the Holocaust's terror. Since the memories are buried, they can hardly be removed, causing one to eternally acknowledge them. This acknowledgement crawls slowly like the dark mole due to the severity and depth of the Nazi's immorality; the clichГ© "time flies when you're having fun" works both ways. Consequently, "buried" and "mole" both reflect the theme of being hidden, either in one's memory, or from the regularity of life after the Holocaust. Through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Theme Of Light In A Streetcar Named Desire Light vs dark is a recurring theme in the play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. This play circles around the main character Blanche and how she is trying to start a new life leaving her past sins behind her. Slowly her past starts to catch up with her and eventually she has a downfall in mental health and is sent away. Throughout this play there are many instances where thelight and the absence of light affects the character Blanche. She finds comfort in the darkness and it greatly influences her connection with reality, the relationship she has with Mitch, and her slow mental decline. The motif light vs dark is prominent because it affects relationships in the story greatly, most noticeably Blanches relationships. When Blanche... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the play she is nonchalant about covering up light because she feels more put together. She tells Mitch to put a "little colored paper lantern... over the lightbulb" because she "can't stand a naked lightbulb" (Williams 60). This shows that she still cares about not being seen in the light but not as much as later in the play. In scene 5 she refers to the lantern covering the light but she says "soft people have got to... put a paper lantern over the light... you've got to be soft and attractive. And I––I'm fading now," she's rambling about how she is not how she was in her youth (Williams 92). She's stating that she needs that covering of the light to be the new , more pure and innocent, person she is trying to be. Soon this darkness that she finds comfort in turns into "shadows of grotesque and menacing form," (Williams 159) haunting her thoughts as she is slowly grown more insane from her past catching up to her. The darkness, which was once her safety net, has turned into her nightmare. Light vs dark accentuates every aspect of Blanche's life and, in turn, affects the people around her. In the far future a "perfect" community exists in the middle of nowhere where the people have no memory of the past and no one sees color.A dystopia is a dark, dysfunctional place, while a utopia is a perfect place, which one should we use to describe the community in the book, "The GIver". We believe that the community has proven to be adystopia, because they have not saved people from death, they kill anyone who wishes to leave and the residents have no memories of the past. One dark, hidden secret of the community is that they have not been able to erase death, they simply hide it behind a new name, called "release". • 11. Analysis Of The Book ' Young Goodman Brown ' Essay Michael Sprute AP English Mrs. Berry 4 October 2016 Humanity is Destined to be Maple I.Introduction A.First paragraph of introduction 1."Young Goodman Brown" is a dark romantic short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne originally published in 1835. 2.Set in 17th century New England, Hawthorne utilizes this short story to convey his distaste for the Salem Witch Trials and his great–grandfather, John Hathorne's participation as a judge. In addition, he demonstrates the Puritan idea that all humans are in a state of corruption until you have experienced a conversion, only sanctioned by God to become part of "the elite". 3.It begins in Salem, Massachusetts when young Goodman Brown leaves his wife, Faith, for an errand in the forest. It is later revealed that this errand is an attempt to seek a conversion in the forest with the Devil. While on the journey, he learns some disturbing things about his ancestors that they too have walked the same walk in the forest with the Devil and not only his ancestors but people of authority and people in the town. Realizing that Faith and himself are the only two not yet initiated, he looks to heaven and the hell he was in vanishes, leaving him back in the forest not knowing whether it was a dream or reality. He returns to Salem the next day with a belief that his Christian village and all of humanity is perverted and so he died a bitter and distrustful man with no hope. The Beating Heart Of The Seven Gables The Beating Heart of The House of the Seven Gables Nathaniel Hawthorne extensively weaves symbolism into the pages of The House of the Seven Gables to bring the house and the items within it to life. The use of gothic elements within the house directly reflects upon the decaying of the Pyncheon family. Their once lively home stands as a constant reminder of the family's legacy. The Pyncheon mansion strongly represents the decaying of the Pyncheon family over time. In the early 1800's, when the house was first built, the Pyncheons were a thriving, wealthy, and influential family. However, as time goes on, the house starts to become an eerie residence in the same way the Pyncheon's glory fades. The author describes the darkness of the... In the yard outside the house stands an overgrown elm tree symbolizing the growth of the darkness in the Pyncheon family. The great tree blocks the sun from shining into the home. Hawthorne symbolizes this as the burden and secrets that cast a dark shadow over the family. When the tree first sprouts upon the lawn and grows, beauty radiates from it in the same way the Pyncheons first radiate their glory. Inside the house remains the memory of Alice Pyncheon found within her coffin–like harpsichord. The harpsichord plays beautiful melodies that still echo through the house. They serve as a constant reminder of Alice's spirit. However, the instrument representing a coffin reminds those who wonder about Alice 's legacy of her tragic ending. By using a coffin–like harpsichord, Hawthorne employs a dual symbol to an item. Much like how the house causes unease to those who dare glance in its direction, the painting of Colonel Pyncheon lets off the same threatening vibe. The glare the old Pyncheon holds in the portrait keeps people who observe the artwork from attempting to remove it from the wall. Hawthorne writes, "there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The common theme of light and dark is used by American authors to help reveal truth. Characters hiding from the truth also hide from the light. These characters' hide because they are scared of revealing the truth to others and to themselves. When Blanche describes her view on the truth, she doesn't know that she almost predicts the tragic end to her life, which can be blamed on her lies. The dance demonstrates the constant hold from one living its life to the fullest potential due to dragging the past, with the urge to obtain freedom or a sense of relief. The choreography being displayed by two female dancers consisted of a negative, intense energy, constant moving towards the ground, and a dragging type of movement due to the stretchy dress. Most of the dance moves are considered characteristics of modern dance due to the movements towards the ground and dancing barefooted. Doris Humphrey's technique of "fall and recovery" is a perfect example to the coming of the ground intensively being presented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was a repetition of the lyric, "I been caught in fire" which is meaningful to the dance because the word fire in this dance can mean death, hell, or sadness. Based on the choreography and costumes the lyrics helped understood the story line for the dance. The style of music chosen complimented the choreographic intent of a melancholy type of movement upon the performance. The music affected the dynamics of the dancer's movements because it allowed a more realistic connection within the dancer. The music choice benefited the dance because the mini pauses throughout the song allowed the dancer to structure the performance in a more impacting way. The music style can be related to the Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey style of music for dancing due to the pace of the music and the type of movements. In addition, the music would have been more touching if it was sang by a female rather than a male to have more association with the female dancers feelings. The music is a key element throughout the performance because it allowed the dancers to dance to the rhythm of the melody and perform with confidence because of the guidance from the music. Given these points, the rhythm, melody, and pauses the music brought to the performance was prosperous for the choreographer, which brought a gloomy mood to the audience with a unique type of music and ... However, history can be complex and ugly, stained by war, genocide, and destruction. Therein lies a philosophical controversy: should these historical "stains" be acknowledged or buried? What role do these ugly histories have in the development of a society? Within the last century, no nation has been forced to confront these questions on the same scale that Germany has (Levinger 118). To many scholars, memory in this context is not simply information that is recalled and retold (qtd. in Till 11). Instead, it is the act of continuously finding and contextualizing history by means of physical space. Preservation of historical architecture is therefore unique, as it juxtaposes this history and memory with the surrounding modern world. This highlights the importance of preserving history through architecture, rather than museums, textbooks, and archives alone. By preserving the physical remnants of a city's dark history, residents and passersby are forced to confront this history nondeliberately. Moreover, according to Rudy J. Koshar, a preserved site must maintain some present value or purpose. This is particularly relevant when considering the preservation of buildings or sites which represent a history that is controversial or shameful, as it is important to balance the shame evoked by this space with the benefits of its preservation. The task of historic preservation is especially challenging in nations such as Germany which have pasts that many are reluctant to remember. Light and Dark symbolize how dark Poe's childhood was since he writes about death, murder, and other gory storylines. • 20. Analysis Of The Writings Of Washington Irving, Nathaniel... Review of writings of Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe. By Mantegbosh Letyibelu Irving, Poe, and Hawthorne were arguably some of the most popular writers of the 19th century (Dincer 223; Lauter 2505). All three of them are known for their short essays and their advocacy to make writing a full–fledged and legitimate profession. Their writings show that they were hugely influenced by the Romantic Movement (romanticism); 'a movement in art, literature, music, philosophy, politics and culture towards focusing on the individual, the subjective, and the spontaneous' (Dincer 218). Romanticist writing "encouraged contemplation and self–awareness, direct contact with nature, and a focus on and an exploration of inner feelings" (Dincer 223). Yet, they had distinct writing style, focus, and theme. While Irving was more of a light romantic writer, a writing style characterized by optimism, Poe and Hawthorne are widely considered dark romantic Authors whose writings were characterized by pessimism that sees the world as full of dark, evil, suffering, horror, and mystery. While Irving's writing focused more on satire and humor, Poe & Hawthorne's writing was more about evil, crime, sin, and mystery. Moreover, Irving seem to be nostalgic aristocrat with huge 'interest in the landscape, folklore, and the past' (2506), whereas Poe and Hawthorne had a contrary view of the past (Liptak). Scientists have a slightly greater idea of the properties of dark matter than they do its identity. The name WIMPS–weakly interacting particles–comes from then fact that dark matter barely interacts with "normal" matter or itself (Ferris). Evidence of this is found in the Bullet cluster, where two clusters are colliding (Ferris). Astronomers found clumps of has gas at the center–ascribed to the collision of normal matter (Ferris). However, they also found a large concentration of mass for each cluster far from the center of the collision (Ferris). They believe that the more massive parts of the clusters that are made up of dark matter are continuing on (Ferris). The dark matter is seemingly unaffected by the massive collision of multiple galaxies, indicating that it is neither pulled along by the normal matter surrounding it nor attracted to its dark counterpart. Other investigations indicate that the formation of galaxies is due to the gravity of dark matter pulling materials together early in the formation of the universe (Ferris). In the end, Williams uses light vs. dark to symbolize many relative thing between the characters and the object. Also she use the concept to set the mood of a scene. • 31. The Theme Of Balance In Ursula Leguin's A Wizard Of Earthsea The balance of light and dark has been off–kilter forever and the balance has never been obtained! In the fantasy novel A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula LeGuin, the battle of light and dark has subsided, balance has been restored, and shows the journey of discovering one's identity. At the end of the novel, when the shadow and Ged conjoin it can be seen as the realization of one's identity, as well the discovering of balance. LeGuin uses symbols in the novel to convey what is happening on a deeper level. At the beginning of the end, the sea turned into sand as Ged approached his shadow, which can be seen as a balance, when two opposites, such as sea and sand, become one. It shows when two opposites find a middle point and are at peace as opposed to constantly battering against one another. This instance can also be seen... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Light and dark have been unbalanced, waging on since the beginning of time, until they find a balance where each has met its match. When Ged, with his flaming white staff merges with the pitch black shadow, and emerging as one may be seen as if they have made peace at a set point and created equilibrium, as previously discussed by Yarrow and Ged. When this occurs, Ged finally becomes a whole self by recognizing who he is, and his balance of positive and negative decisions .Also, in the interaction between Ged and the shadow on the "yin and yang" island, Ged spoke his own name and embraced the shadow. Ying and Yang are seen as a "duality forming a whole" so when Ged and the shadow unite, it can symbolize discovering his whole identity. Since often times darkness represents evil, it can be seen as when Ged embraced the shadow, he is accepting his past decisions and dark side that can overcome him at any time. It is a part of growing up and finding who you really are, to realize your past faults, and accept what you did and move ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Black Walnut Tree By Mary Oliver The Past is Rooted Change is inevitable; as the years go on, everything is always either improving or weakening, but still changing. Nothing can prevent change, but there are still those who ignore it and refuse it. Individuals refused to accept their past because they do not want to change, they want to focus on the present. In Mary Oliver's free verse poem, The Black Walnut Tree, the daughter discusses the argument with her mother regarding the selling of their Black Walnut Tree, commenting on it's personal history with her ancestors. In the poem, Oliver contrasts the daughter's disagreeing perception of the mother's consumeristic urges to sell their tree with her need to preserve it and its memories through the use of dark, gloomy word choice and varying concepts of time, illustrating the everlasting effect and importance of one's past and ancestry on the present. The shift from a literal to figurative tone contrasts the mother's views with those of the daughter's, commenting on the difficulty of preserving history. Oliver introduces the mother and daughters argument in the introduction, "My mother and I debate:," including a semicolon at the end of the first stanza. The semicolon is used as a layout for the rest of the poem, to show the words following are in fact the debate between the speaker, the daughter, and her mother. The point of view in the daughter shifts the argument in favor of the daughter, who has yet to deal with the issues of money. She regards her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Octavio Paz tries to remember his past life in his poem, "Poet's Epitaph." "And to remember his lying life of truths."(Paz 342) Through the use of the word "lying", we are shown that he has lived a regretful life where he had to lie. Another way the author displays his regret in life, is through the waste of his time. In his poem, "Small Variation," he speaks about how time is passing by him and he is not doing anything. "A sound of sand sifting away"(Paz 343). This quote describes the sounds of an hourglass, and the author is simply letting time pass by. The author also develops the idea of regret through the thought of the future. In his poem, "The Street," the street is represented as his life and he is walking towards his future blindly. "I walk blind"(Paz 342). Octavio Paz uses the word blind to express how he is going towards the future. He regrets how he is going towards the future without a path to follow. • 35. American History : The Dark Past American History: The Dark Past Unique characters, stimulating story plot and surprising endings are some reasons people in literature believe the two novels To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck have maintained their long standing positions in American literature. Readers and critics alike spend much time searching for what distinguishes these novels from others. As plain and old these books may seem, their messages are not. To some, the messages of these novels are about the inspiring, exhilarating, and uplifting history of this country. But in this case, it is the polar opposite. Throughout these novels, racism, sexism, and many other themes are exhibited as the norm for the characters. Readers often forget that these dark aspects of the past are a part of America's history. Spanning from the start of early civilization, humans have made many mistakes and to stop this vicious cycle, they have to learn from the past by keeping classics like these part of school curriculums. After the required novels in their English classes, students unanimously agree that classics are overrated and outdated. They claim that the themes exhibited throughout the book create a monotonous tone and plot. However, these are what gives the novels their energy and unique depth. Miller, the author of The Dark Night of the Soul, is an English professor/executive director of the Plan–genre Writing Center at Rutgers University. He studies the English curriculum in the U.S and questions if it is successful or a dying art. This is evident in The Dark night of the Soul, It can be quite a shock to confront the possibility that reading, writing, and talking exercise almost none of the powers we regularly attribute to them in our favorite stories. The dark night of the soul for literacy workers comes with the realization that training students to read, write, and talk in more critical and self– reflective ways cannot protect them from the violent changes our culture is undergoing. "To write by virtue of their deep insights into the human spirit; that a world filled with artistic creations is superior to one filled with the cast offs of the consumer culture; that writing provides access to immortality." Joining the Liars Club is a perfect example of someone using writing to face their past, their darkest part of their soul. "Writing, as she uses it, is a hermeneutic practice that involves witnessing the mundane horrors of the past in order to make peace with that past", states Miller. The Dark night of one's soul is a personal fear, past, journey that in the end you reach a sense of peace. The book A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer is an exquisite book. It is Mr. Pelzers' way of dealing with the dark night of his soul. He tells his journey through extreme child abuse, and how he overcame his past and now uses it for good. • 38. The Fall Of The House Of Usher Essay Humans in today's society are very interested in the supernatural. The supernatural can consist of ghosts, vampires, and even the devil. No one really knows if these supernatural things are real, but by reading Edgar Allan Poe's work, he might just convince you to believe in them. To be specific, in "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Poe many people debate about the presence of supernatural beings. There are five sides to this debate, natural causes, the house and family have a bond, the house is haunted, the Usher family are vampires, and a chance that there is a physiological reason for all of the happenings in the Usher house. The Usher family are vampires because Madeline is eating normal food and not gaining any weight, the family is ancient, all of the rooms in the Usher house are dark and have no light, the house looks old and haunted, and Madeline couldn't have rose from the dead without being a vampire and or being... • 39. Themes Of Dark Romanticism Many people think the natural world is a dark place. What makes human beings think this? Is it that they were brought up as a child to think this way, or was it that as they got old they thought their lives had become worthless, therefore, they continued to not care? Similar themes are shown in the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, andNathaniel Hawthorne in their individual works "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Devil and Tom Walker," and "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment." Unlike the Transcendentalists who saw the purity of an individual, Dark Romantics saw people as unrighteous and damnable and their writings reflect that people suffer, they see nature as something mysterious, and people have guilt from sinning. In Dark Romantic literary works the characters are often suffering. For instance, in "The Pit and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, in "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he explains how the characters each have something they want to change in their lives because they feel guilty. Widow Wycherly at one time was a woman who was loved in the town, but then people learned more about her past. She lost her reputation and has guilt for it: "As for the Widow Wycherly, tradition tells us that she was once a great beauty. But shocking stories about her past had led the people of the town to reject her. So, she lived very much alone." (Hawthorne 252). Similarly, the characters, who wanted to be young again, drank the youth water. As they are guilty for their past mistakes, and they look miserable, "They seemed as though they had never known youth or pleasure. They looked like they had always been the weak, unhappy creatures who were bent over the doctor's table" (Hawthorne 254).
