Editor's Notes
Teddy Roosevelt won it in 1906. Albert Schweitzer received it in 1952. It has been awarded to the international Red Cross multiple times. Other recipients have included Martin Luther King, Jr., Henry Kissinger, Andrei Sakharov, Mother Theresa, and Nelson Mandela. It was created from a trust left in a will back in November of 1895. It is a prize awarded to the person or organization that does the most to promote peace in the world. Back in the later part of the 19th century a man made millions of dollars from the invention and manufacture of dynamite and other explosives. His name was Alfred Bernhard Nobel – the originator of the now world famous Nobel Peace Prize.
For many years people have been praying for world peace.
Just as the exiled Jews returned to Jerusalem in the days of Nehemiah
Christians today anticipate a return of the Jews to Jerusalem
Every United States president has peace in the Middle East on his agenda
Political and religious leaders have teamed up in the pursuit of world peace
Many people believed that the year 2000 would usher in the 1,000 year period of peace prophesied by John in Revelation. (fly in question) Will there ever be a time of peace in this world? (fly in next question) If there is a time of peace, will there be anyone here to enjoy it?
Our subject tonight is -- Millennium: One Thousand Years of Peace
The term “millennium” has been given to this 1,000-year period. It comes from two Latin words; mille, meaning thousand, and annum, meaning years
(Note to the presenter – Webster’s dictionary says the Latin word is “annus,” not “annum.” The study guide uses Webster’s word, the slide shows “annum.”)
Read the entire chapter of Revelation 20 before beginning the study.

Much of Revelation is symbolic, including this reference to Satan being bound with a chain. Satan is a spiritual being and could not be literally bound with a chain. The meaning of him being “bound” will be explained further in # 13.

Notice that millennium means 1,000 years and Satan is bound for 1,000 years.

The term “bottomless pit” comes from the Greek word “abussos,” from which we get our English word “abyss.” This is the same word used in the Bible to describe the earth at creation, being “without form and void.” This earth is the bottomless pit where Satan is bound.

At first reading it may seem that the first resurrection refers to the dead who are resurrected after the 1,000-year period.
But the first resurrection is referring to those in verse 4 who “lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”
Read question then use the Bible to fill in the answer in the study guide.
The first resurrection occurs when Jesus comes back to earth in His glory. The Scriptures are clear that those who are raised to life at that time will be taken to heaven with Jesus.

The wicked cannot live in the presence of God. They try to hide themselves, but they cannot.
They are killed, and there is no one to bury them.

It has always been Satan’s work to deceive. He started in heaven when he convinced 1/3 of the angels to side with him against Michael and His angels.

During the millennium God will open His books to the saints. Satan’s insinuation is that God is not fair. In heaven, the saved will be able to see the evidence of God’s mercy, justice, and impartiality. Even the angels’ lives will be open for review.

At the beginning of the millennium the righteous are taken to heaven, and the wicked are slain. For 1,000 years the earth is empty — there is no living thing.
At the end of the millennium the wicked dead are raised to life. Satan is “bound” at the same time the wicked are slain, and he is “released” when they “live again.” The “binding of Satan” means that he will have no one to deceive. When he is bound (verse 3), it is so he cannot deceive the nations. When he is released (verses 7,8), he immediately begins to deceive once again.

Satan’s character is the same as it has been since his apostasy in heaven. He still seeks to place himself above God, and as he did with the angels in heaven, he attempts to get as many followers as he can.

This indicates that the home of the saints, Holy City, New Jerusalem, is on earth at the end of the 1,000 years. John saw it “coming down out of heaven from God.” (Revelation 21:2)

It is God’s desire for everyone to be saved. “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
But He cannot save sinners.
Those who choose to worship the beast cannot have their names retained in the Book of Life.
But those who overcome Satan’s temptations by “the blood of the Lamb,” will keep their place in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Will you determine, by God’s grace, to overcome sin and have your name written in the Book of Life?
